once you've been around long enough, you'll start to notice patterns. this
is one of them. every few months, someone reminds everyone that our Boys
are watching. the newbies get hysterical and "HEY MIKE!"'s start popping up
at the end of posts. it doesnt last long and soon most ppl forget our Boys'

OK, several things to address here.

It's entirely possible, but you're gonna have a hard time getting
anything more solid than diarrhea on the subject from those who'd know,
that several members of DT and their management read the Jam.

Now if you were them, would YOU want to read a digest of nothing
but speculation of whether or not you were there? I mean, think about
it... THEY know the answer. Let's turn the topic to something else,
before they all leave from rank BOREDOM! :)

Nate: I wish I knew you needed a LIE single, I sold my last one a few days
ago. I know it's still available in the UK. Any British Jammers able to
help Nate out on this one? He's offering US $25.00 for it...

Pam, Madelaine, and Babs: I'm so sorry I forgot you in my list of women,
It wasn't intentional, I just space on lists and usually leave out half of
all the stuff that matters. :(

Now then, I have a small announcement to make... Melissa and I
are getting married today. Officially. The church wedding is 11/7/97, but
today is when we go to the JP and get it done legally, so that we can
combine health, life, & auto insurances, plus credit, plus we can try to
start a family. Naturally, I'm a bit numb on the subject emotionally... I
don't know HOW a person is supposed to feel about getting married. I'll
let you all know when it's over. :) Shipments might be a bit slow for a
week or two while we honeymoon at Disneyland & Magic Mtn, and then go to
an Equinox training in Long Beach (back to work eh). Anyway, almost all of
you sent your kind wishes when we were engaged, we just wanted to thank
you all in advance, and hope we can meet again soon.

The downside is that my honeymoon will completely cut off any
chance of me going to the FIX for 96 shows. I can tell ya, some tapes of
those shows would make one AWESOME wedding present! :) I'd even send some
complimentary CDs in return just for the effort.

Anyway, that about covers things for today. A few final notes:
    * Don't eat too much tomorrow, folks...
    * The Cardinals are 6-6.. will they advance? Probably not, but hey!!!
    * The ASU Sun Devils will be the national champs. Think about it... it
doesn't matter who wins the Florida-FSU game, because the winner will get
flattened by Nebraska in [name a bowl] in January. I humbly predict that
ASU will beat Ohio State. I don't mean to seem cocky about this.. but
consider that I've lived in Arizona all my life, and we've never had a
championship team in any sport, EVER!!! Unless you count minor league
(Arena Rattlers and IHL Roadrunners). So I suppose you can all forgive my
relentless cheering for the locals, and if you're in an area that has
nothing to cheer for at this point, why not give the Cards and ASU a
little bit of your good karma? :)
    * Rush Friday night, in Phoenix. I can't wait. Man, this is gonna be the
most incredible winter of my life.
    * I've been losing weight like I've never believed it now that I've tried
this new all-natural stuff.. and I still eat junk food! If you'd like to
give it a try, let me know, I can connect you with the source. I feel
healthier than ever in my life. And those of you who met me at the con
know that I am [was] a pretty fat guy.
    * Almost every Tori disc, up to number 110 or 120 or so, is sent. The rest
will be within the next week or two (marraige permitting) the book will
thus close on that mysterious, rare release, and it will be consigned into
the footnotes of boot history with the relics.

            Take it easy everyone!!!

Hey Joe... go easy on Bafu, I'm sure a lot of what he said was
tongue-in-cheek, and the rest was actually kinda neat to read.

As far as the women w/prog music thing, I think the main problem
is that most women don't get to HEAR prog music. Melissa (my wife as of
later today) listened to pop, R&B, rap, whatever the hell MTV and pop
radio played, for her entire LIFE before she met me. Dream Theater is now
tied with King's X as her favourite band, and they're followed up in no
real order by Rush, Type O Negative, Tori Amos, and Galactic Cowboys. She
told me once that the music is just so much better than the repetitive,
industry-synthesized crap she always listened to before, that she would
have been into it all along if only someone she trusted had introduced her
    to it.

Revealing eh? Also, consider that, statistically, more women are
right-brained and more men are left-brained. What this means is that one
characteristic of RB people (usually women) is that they won't believe
something is true unless it "feels" true, or someone they trust or have a
connection with says it's true, etc. To get more women into good music, we
not only have to expose the material to them, but we also have to do it
from the standpoint of someone who cares about them, whether as a friend
or boyfriend/husband. Most left-brainers, generally men, will look at the
facts and declare something true if it appears so, even if their feelings
or hunch about the matter indicates the total opposite. They may check
into their hunch, but the issue is generally left pretty much alone. All
this is pretty fascinating when you look into it. Please note that there's
no "right" way to think... LB and RB thinking are equally valid, and there
ARE LB women and RB men out there... Millions of them. I bet nobody can
even tell which I am, because I'm just here to have fun. :) But I digress.

It's all marketing, folks. The cattle-music industry has targeted
women because the industry perception (which I think is skewed) is that
women are more impulsive buyers than men, and will buy anything marketed
to them, regardless of content. I am a living example of a man who buys
anything and everything on impulse, but leave it to the bean-counters to
set the pace for the trendies everywhere. Add this to the fact that women
have to put up with much more vicious peer-pressure than men do, and we
can see why women usually are into "popular" music. Let's face it guys,
our childhood was a CAKEWALK compared to theirs. All we had to put up with
were fistfights and cutdowns. With girls, there's all that innuendo,
backstabbing, gossip, appearance worry, and mistrust. It's a whole
different ballpark. I'm impressed they made it in as good shape as they
    did, overall.

I'm informed by LdyDragon on IRC that there is a TGIF restaurant right
near the Birch Hell entrance (less than a mile away on that main
road). If a local jammer wants to call them and see if they could
deal with a moderately sizeable, but hungry and wealthy group of
food-buying DT fans that Saturday evening, we could get this ball
    rolling. :)

(I lied about the wealthy part, but the restaurant needn't know that.
    hehe)

    Dan Russell screamed,

    >I personally think that Pantera sucks!!!

I used to feel that way.

    > Comparing themn to DT is like comparing apples to oranges.

Apparently, you don't hear the Pantera influence in some of John Petrucci's (say, "Pe-TRU-chee", not "Pe-TRU-kee") riff-writing. I hear it in some of the post-I&W stuff, like Pup, Lie, and A Crack In The Mirror; the latter more so displaying the ever-popular "balls and chunk".

    >They lack the talent that DT posseses.

Just because you don't like their (Pantera's) music has nothing to do with whether they are talented or not. Personally, I never cared for Pantera and that whole style of music with the roaring vocals. Then I picked up "The Great Southern Trendkill", and now I'm a changed man. That album rocks so hard it's not even funny. Balls-And-Chunk (tm) galore. I'm not saying it's better or worse than anything DT has done, but it is a very good album....to me.

    >am just so sick and tired of hearing that Pantera is way better then DT >because they are not!!!

When did someone say that? I must've missed it. Only thing I've noticed lately is how Pantera used to be "glam", or something like that.

    *&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*&*

    Regarding Mr. Portnoy "watching":

Jammers say Mike claims to read every Jam. Let's think about this for a moment. For those of us in Digest-mode, we get, I'd say, roughly 5 Jams a day. Reading every word of every Jam every day takes time.....lots of time. Look at the people bitching about getting too many and wanting to unsubscribe and all that. Then consider how busy Mike probably is. He's touring doing clinics, he's away from home a lot, he's got other stuff to deal with regarding the band, his family, and every thing else. How then, I ask, could he possibly read all the Jams? My guess is that he reads very few Jams, with long periods of time in between each reading. I'm sure he has better things to do with his time.

    >That's all for now. I'll do this again soon if no one complains about this >post. I've bought around 20-30 cds in the last 2-3 months. Lots of cool >stuff to buy still too.

No complaints here. If it weren't for post like this, I'd be much further behind in my pursuit of enjoyable sounds. Keep it up, Chris!

I agree that Maiden is not prog metal. I think they just have a sound that is very British metal, remember Judas Priest? I think the "intelligent" part of their sound comes from Mr. Dikinson. Did you all know he really did go to university? Majored in literature or something. He wrote a novel. And he was something like 3rd or 7th ranked fencer in all England (up with fencing!!!:). So he is an educated man and lends that to his music. I also agree that Seventh son and the older discs like Ancient Mariner had an edge to them that his new stuff lacks. But, the new stuff still kicks butt if your looking for straight ahead metal like it used to be in the old days before everything turned into noise!!! (IMHO) Rember Dokken, Morgoth, Sepeltura, Rainbow (whoa), Alice Cooper, and Artillery (Anybody else know about these guys? Does "By Inheritance" bring back any memories?) What about Megadeath and Older Ozzy? WHAT THE F**K'S AN ORANGE 9mm?!?!? Most modern metal sucks rabbits (DT and the genre excluded of course). Who found the LIE single??? I've been looking for that too. I need that Disc!!

"It's mine by inheritance, no one can take it away.." Artillery (Danish metal folks)

So unsubscribe. After all, not everyone who deals with opinions in the real world can present/survive them on these demanding, torturous mailing lists, so I'll understand if you just want to get the hell out of here.

    > It's times like this that I have to agree with people who have left > because the content of the Jam sometimes degrades to 90% slop.

Let's see...if I unsubscribe, then the digests would only be an easy, tolerable 70% slop.

(Flamewave II: My arrogance for assuming I'm only 20% of the slop.)

    > I guess, being female, that I'd have a difficult time liking any kind > of complex music, since it would take _so_ much effort to prevent me > from having an "untrained ear or mind."

I guess, being one person, that I'd have a difficult time replying to all of this if my equally-caustic comments regarding males had stirred up such a torrent. Where are the resounding cries of "SELLOUT!" ? Don't tell me the males on this list thought I was just fucking around?

    > Guess it's a good thing that I stopped taking music theory class...that > A that I got must have been some fluke in the grading system.

Explain to me how the complexity of a music theory class is similar in intensity or form to the complexity of "Metropolis, Part 1."

Furthermore, why do you feel music theory outweighs psychology? Are you trying to argue with me? I don't believe the converse of what you said above, so you're going to have to reverse your statements if you're trying to be perpendicular.

    > On the other hand, perhaps I have some chromosomal abnormality which > leaves me more male than female.

Any abnormality that would leave you more male than female or vice versa stems from imbalanced hormones. Chances are (unless you've had injections of some sort), that imbalance has been there since about the third week of your fetal development. I'm male because of this abnormality. Janet Jackson is female because of the same abnormality. Some people don't have this abnormality. They are called hermaphrodites. Are you a hermaphrodite?

Violence ought to be performed, not described. Intense description fills the mind with impulse, which in turn leads to action. Intense performance leads to exhaustion, and thus, inaction. Your storytelling perpetuates the needless cycle of pain and misery.

The next time you get the desire to tell someone about a beating you performed, ponder the repercussions of your recounting. You may be better off just beating the listener.

Bet you wish I was right there in the room with you, huh?

But if I were him, yes, I would tell my e-mail. Why not? If he reads almost 100K jam daily it would be nothing to read a few fanatic's e-mail... even Kevin answered a lot of my e-mails. Think how many "lunatics" e-mailed him with thousends of "why did you leave the band, why did you cut your hair, etc." stupid questions. But I don't think Portnoy has the time to read this when I can go through just a few interesting post, because the 90 percent of the posts suck hard and maybe he doesn't really care who and why like Petrucci or other guitarist or xy.. > Come on Mike, let's make this easier to everyone, and come out, before > anybody gets hurt!!! Hello ye 'jamanoids of the outer space...

Skadz said he'd be off the 'jam for a while and look what happened. It's all Cobain and Metallica again. That album entitled with that four-letter word I absolutely refuse to say aloud is still a forbidden topic on this list. But while we're at it, here goes...I just hope Skadz won't defenestrate me for this...

20 REASONS TO HATE METALLICA by Michael McCarthy of Ant Magazine ----------------------------------------------------------------- [Before you read this let me just say that this was written with HUMOR (not hatred) in mind.... I'm not actually trying to convince anyone to change their opinion about the band. Just want to give those of you with a sense of sarcasm something to laugh at!! :^)]

    1. Lars Ulrich . . . He's gotta be the worst spokesperson on earth. Talks in circles more than Mr. Brady . . . and he sounds almost as phony.

    2. Kirk Hammet has apparently developed photogenic cigar dependency and apparently cannot be photographed without a cigar in his hand or mouth. Also, he looks more like one of those Calvin Klein AD boys everyday.

    3. They said they'd never do videos, then they did one--or, actually, two--for "One." And one for every damn single they've released since.

    4. Metallica's Load contest on MTV. As if it isn't lame in itself, it's ironic that the band who won't travel in buses (because of an accident that killed their previous bassist Cliff Burton) is willing to ride in the back of a freight truck for a highly publicized contest. And who named this contest anyway? Beavis & Butthead?

    5. Speaking of Load, talk about a dumb album title. Maybe Beavis & Butthead named the album, too.

    6. Album covers. Load and the so-called "black album" have horribly lame album covers. The dozens of T-shirts drawn by artist Pushead back in the day were far superior to this crap.

    7. "Nothing Else Matters." Sure, they can knock bands like Winger that were known for their ballads but then they go ahead and write one of the lamest we've ever heard themselves . . . and even have the nerve to throw darts at a picture of Kip Winger in the video.

    8. Make up. Didn't you slag bands for wearing it back in the 80's? Sorry guys, but even Bret Michaels looked much cooler in make up than Lars ever will.

    9. "Mama Said." Last album you expanded your horizons with a lame ballad. This time, a country song. Sure you still want to be known as METAL-lica?

    10. After years of portraying a tight unit, recent interviews reveal that Lars and James were always running the show and that Kirk and Jason weren't allowed to express much input.

    11. Speaking of Lars and James... Bob Rock did a damn fine job producing the last album himself. This time you had to add your two cents and the production is only half as amazing.

    12. The chorus of "Until It Sleeps" sounds like a Megadeth rip-off and the verses sound like a cheap Eddie Vedder impersonation. Dumb video, too. Do you WANT people to start associating rock music with Satanism again??

    13. James Hetfield has apparently developed the mental condition known as CHA being that he can't sing--or even shout--simple words like "bitch" without adding the sylable "cha" to the end of the word.

    14. Lollapalooza. It would almost be cool that they're playing it if the event itself hadn't turned into an overly commercial and pseudo-political gathering of the least alternative bands and fans on the planet.

    15. Jason Newsted's stupid faces. I mean, does this guy always look like he has to take a shit or what?

    16. Do any of them ever look like they're having fun anymore for that matter? Even in the Kill =EBEm All and Ride The Lightning days when the music was filled with anger and more anger they at least smiled in pictures.

    17. No lyrics in the new CD insert...

    18. ... but, instead, dozens of pictures to assure you that they really do look like Soundgarden now.

    19. Speaking of the lyrics, are they supposed to make sense? Bad enough they're not printed and James misprounces every other word.

    20. They sound as though they don't give a damn about being cool and selling millions and millions of records, but, given the above, I think it's clear that it's their main priority. ------------------ Yup. That about says it all. And if you don't agree, tough shit. THIS IS NOT TO INITIATE THE SELLOUT DISCUSSION AGAIN, HEAR ME!? AND THIS INCLUDES THE NEWBIES AS WELL! Besides, I'm not shouting.

On a totally other note I saw Modern Music's reprint of Superior's CD yesterday here in Helsinki. Mucho cool. BTW, Bernd, you have forgotten to send you application to Le Club Dementique...remember? No? Neither do I.

Since it seems (almost) every ytsegirl has gotten out of their lurk mode, I think it's time to announce a new member in our Ytsefamily. Darlings, we have a newbie..., and it's a girl! :) Satu, reveal yourself. Post something!

    To Mr. Komonen:

    >Number one DT fan in... Oh no you're not. :)
