What audience size will DT be playing for at the Christmas shows,
    approximately?

(No, I'm NOT asking about D-Man's bra size here, I'm asking about how
    many people will be there).

    Hi all

after a week of reading about Iron Maiden (yuk), who's got tickets for Birch Hill (not me, whooo), and Bafu's gender-bending shredding theory (very tongue in butt-cheek), it's time for me to provide some musical input. No Dream Theater content, but nonetheless three albums that some of you may find either appealing or appalling (my CD dealer has just sold his Porsche and now drives a Rolls Royce).

    Anathema - Eternity

This album sees the band evolving further in the direction that they took on 'The Silent Enigma'. Very clean vocals, mostly melancholic music, but with some very catchy riffs. If you like gothic/doom, you should treat your ears to this.

The Garden Of Delight - Scheoul

The new one by Germany's premier gothic band. The mix is very dark, with guitars floating in and out, heavy bass lines and symphonic keyboards that don't go over the top. These guys have definitely got their own special sound, but the influences of 'Fields Of The Nephilim', 'Joy Division' and 'Sisters Of Mercy' cannot be denied. This could be one for you if you like well-produced atmospheric gothic stuff. Am I the only Jammer who listens to this band?

    Sentenced - Down

Finnland strikes again. This lot used to be death metal but they now play what I can only describe as melodic metal. Very good arrangements, and deservedly album of the month (together with Anathema) in the latest German edition of Metal Hammer. I first picked the CD up because there was a sticker on it that said 'produced by Waldemar Sorychta', and what can be better than that? Perhaps Dream Theater might like to use him.

Question time: have any of you cyber kiddies heard of a band called Autumn Tears? Any info gratefully received.

Incidentally, I got the subject line from the home page of the so-called Church Of Euthanasia. If you think there are some wierdos here on the jam, then go check out this bunch.

OK, more next time. Looking forward to Cathedral/My Dying Bride on Sunday, and eagerly awaiting albums by Spocks Beard, Ulver and Heavenwood in the mail.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Sadist - Tribe

    Hi y'all,

Got the "Politics of Ecstasy" the other day. Cewl as hell. Two questions:

    1) WTF is the 5 minute silence in the last song? Does everyone have that or is it just the European pressing? Reminds me of Iron Maiden's "Phantom of the opera" or Sepultura's last song on Chaos AD. Does anyone know of any other song wtih a long silence? I know Mr Blow (or was it Cage) -postmodern classical music- had composed a "Silence in 4 mouvements". 6 minutes or so long. Hahha. That guy's crazy. He died.

    2) Notice our old chap from Sanctuary's "Into the mirror black" makes an appearance in the liner sleeve? In fact it's just a copy-paste but it was cewl to see hiom again. Does anyone know anything about him? He was also on Fates' "Perfect Symmetry", "Parallels" and also posed for Metallica, right?

Four CDs (why always five, anyway?): - Nevermore "The politics of Ecstasy" - Vicious Rumors "Word of Mouth" - Vauxdvihl "..." (damn: forgot it again) - Coroner "Grin"

    Take care,

Speaking of Iron Maiden...I used to have a lot of Maiden on cassette in the 80's and haven't been a really big fan in the 90's, however, I picked up the "Best of the Beast" double CD set a while ago...I am totally back in to Maiden again...The book that the CDs are packaged in is really cool, complete with an Iron Maiden family tree describing the complete coming and going of band members past and present...

    Great CD purchases lately:

IM - Beast of the Beast Tori Amos - Little Earthquakes (thanks to 'jammer recommendations!) Rush - TfE Steve Vai - Fire Garden.

I bought all at once and got one of those well-aren't-you-the-diverse-buyer looks from the cashier. I guess not many people but Tori and Maiden at the same time...

Hi all, Please stop bashing about Country-music. I guess no one here is really into that kind of music, so the discussion is off-topic, IMHO. More or less the same went with the Kurt Cobain-thread. I just want to say that we can't be so close-minded and condemn a complete musical category. For some people this is IT, let them have it. We've got our, right? I recently saw the Blues-Brothers-film, and I remember when the BAND came to Bob's Country Bunker and asked about what kinda music they usually have. The woman replied: "Ooh, we have both kinds! Country AND Western !" That was all musical influences she had, so stop wearing her mask! B-sides I guess quite few of us can tell the difference, I know I can't. Ok I'm finished, keep on jamming...

One of you people out there with too much time of your hands made the logical stretch that since Fates Warning was included in the River's Edge soundtrack, the movie must be good. Or something to that effect. Well, let me give a little capsule of this fairly horrible movie. Lots of big stars: Dennis Hopper, Keanu Reeves, Ione Skye, and Crispin Glover. (Yes, McFly) Hopper is a fake leg-havin' drug dealer freak. Reeves and Glover are teenage, Seattle-area-livin', headbanger/stoners. They listen to Slayer, Hallow's Eve, Fates, etc. Therefore the semi-cool soundtrack. Some guy kills his girlfriend at "the river's edge." They don't turn him in to the cops. Everyone goes and checks it out. Cool. Smoke some dope. Reeves' little brother is a pain-in-the-ass. You have never seen worse acting than that put forth by Reeves and especially Glover. That guy is really, really freaky-weird. Interesting side bit: this was the first of two movies starring Reeves and Hopper. the second? Speed. These two movies are about ten years and a million miles apart. ****Segue alert**** And over the river, in Seattle, there is a band called Queensryche....

Spiff asked about the "Bridge" single. There are at least two of these. Part1 and part2. One of them has some live tunes, "Lady Wore Black," Damaged," and "the Killing Words." The other has "Dirty Lil' Secret," "Real World," and "Someone Else - Full Band Version." I think there is yet a third version with more live tracks. I only have two. Part one is an English Import with the live songs. I don't have part two. The other one I have is a German import, with the studio tracks.

    Have an extra-crunchy Thanksgiving.

    Hey All ...

First lemme just wish everyone a happy thanksgiving :) No drunk driving now :P

This whole Bafu thing.... Well, Steve and I talked about this once. (I'm allowed to call him Steve because I am the moderator :P) I think the best explanation is that you cannot expressive emotions very clearly in email messages. I know even on the irc channel, you can't always tell when people are being sarcastic or whatnot because you can't see the expression on their face or hear the tone of their voice. I think this is the biggest reason bafu and others end up getting flamed and misunderstood.

Birch Hill gathering ... Well, as long as we know these places exist still (HI D-Man!!!), then we should definately chose a place. The only small problem I see with TGIF is that it is the kind of place that is usually real organized in seating people and whatnot, they don't want a bunch of black clothed long-hairs coming in and out and stirring up alot of trouble. So I think maybe that someone (not me PLEASE) should maybe get a list of people together who want to meet there and we can all meet outside beforehand and all head in somewhat together and just get a bunch of tables in one area or something. (anyone know if they take reservations? Heather?) Maybe we could get an estimated number together and try to reserve a whole section (MAKE SURE ITS IN SMOKING :) or something. Someone either mail me or the jam who wouldn't mind gathering names and we can set up and time and see if we can get the place reserved. Sound good???

The Subject. Anyone heard this song? Blue Skies by BT with Tori singing? Cool stuff.

Today begins a real hectic month or so for me. Between going to Vegas, 3 DT shows, Christmas and New Years, its gonna be real crazy, but hopefully should be real real fun. I'm really looking forward to seeing all you crazy people again and meeting new ones. It's real scary that the last time I saw some of the people on this list was almost a year ago, it seems like yesterday. ("We met Dream Theater" -Skadz Dec 1995 :)

Congratulations to Mike Bahr, I wish you the best :) And send me an invite to the real wedding :) I would love to come to AZ and chill for a bit (and leach some CDs ;)

The IRC Server. I know it has been dying alot lately overnight. I think I figured out (and hopefully fixed) the problem. It should stay up until I get back. If it doesn't, I will put it back up once I get back to Boston, so don't email me :P

Well, I think that's all for now. Have a Happy Thanksgiving all and I will talk to you when I return from Vegas.

    >Oh sure, pick the one and only DT tune I CANNOT stand (somebody must have >tipped you off on that - alright who on this list was the leak?).

you know I used to not like that song too well until I've been put in the situation I'm in now. I'm in a long-distance relationship and have been for over five months. As time progress it seems like it becomes harder and harder for us to see each other. We have to plan further in advance, we have to plenty of permission (both of us are still in high school). And even though we;ve lasted this long through our letters, tapes, and phone calls, it seems like there are some people who still aren't too optimistic for us. Four simple lines sums up the entire situation: "Beginnings get complicated The further we progress Opinions are calculated Immune to openness" So suddenly innoncence faded suddenly has a lot of meaning for me. I've come to the conclusion that Dream Theater is the soundtrack to my life. Somehow or other, the guys at DT know what's happening in my life, what has happened in my life, and what will happen in my life, and converted all of this into their songs. Does that sound arrogant on my part? I don't think so. I think all DT fans have experienced this feeling at one time or another, the feeling were you realize that every single song DT has ever written (or at least that you've heard) is related to you and your life. At least that's how it's been for me... -James

Well, I've got all of Maiden's and Bruce Dickinson's albums, live and studio, and I still haven't figured this one out. To me it seems to change with every album that they write. Methinks that if you want to refer to them as prog, you would have to refer to Powerslave, Seventh Son or Somewhere in Time a bit more than others. That seemed to be their experimentation period. If you ask me, though, I find more progressive tendencies in Iron Maiden songs than I do in Rush songs, but that's just my opinion.

I realized this, too, the other day. Zach is a really great singer, but he doesn't get into the songs like Jon does. I was singing along to Alone You Breathe in the car and actually got bored singing it the way Zach does. There's alot more he can do with the songs if he just plays around and throws some dops and lulls in there. I wouldn't count him out yet, though, he did bring in those madrigal harmonies. :) > Can anyone tell me what's on the 'Best I Can' and 'Bridge' singles (by > Queensryche)? Best I Can if I remember had the studio and radio mixes of the song and an acoustic (live?) remix of I Dream in Infrared. There was another song on there, too, but I can't recall. I was going to buy this, but the place wanted $35 US for it, I said screw it. Four songs for $35 is a ripoff. Bridge is the I Am I 2 single with Bridge on it instead of I Am I. the other songs are: Dirty Lil' Secret, Real World, and Someone Else? (Full Band Version). It's a great CD for the price!

Well... I'll try to hide my dissapointment over the fact that only 35 people entered my Dream Theater poll... Although, there's still a *chance* 65 people will enter before the closing date, December 1st ;-)

Just check out the temporary results on my homepage, and vote if your favourite song isn't in the top-10, or whatever... :-< _____

Anyway, you guys might remember D-Man's idea to set up a YtseBirthday calendar, a few months ago... Recently, someone brought up such a thing on the Marillion list, and I took it upon myself to maintain it...

I immediately asked D-Man for the birthdays that were already sent to him by some of you Jammers, and he mailed them to me [thanks D!].

To make this thing really interesting, I need a *lot* of people to check it out and submit their nick/name and birthday using the little form beneath the calendar. If you don't want to, you don't even have to enter your birth *year*... Just the date will be sufficient...

You can also enter your e-mail address if you want people to congratulate you with your birthday, and/or enter your homepage URL if you want people to "visit you" :->

Jammerz, especially those of you who have been spending a lot of time hammering bafu:

LAY THE HELL OFF!!! I thought this list was based on at least two things other that DT: 1 Freedom to your opinion 2 Freedom to express it.

Knocking someone else's thoughts is not considered opinion. It is considered forcing your opinion on someone else. To those who think that's cool, go piss up a rope.

One of the main reasons I've been around for these first 150 jamz (woo hoo) is Bafu's humour. I'd be willing to bet that he's into Monty Python, like me. My point is, we're all supposed to be kindred souls here (not the kind that worship LM Montgomery), united not by a cause, but an interest. I'm no bad guy, and I don't claim Papal Infallibility (the guy who used that is never gonna hear the end of it), but I do know that there are better ways for us to focus our energies than fight. debate discuss and argue are okay, but fighting is senseless between friends.

... To all, American or not. Today is gratuitous food day, one of the few holidays that isn't all screwed out of its original meaning by blantant commercialism or rampant religious overtones.

It is the only holiday I relish (pun intended), although my favorite is Halloween.

I suspect I have just contributed to the unrelated content that has been overflowing the jam. It seems that when people are confronted by a lack of noise, they babble on to fill up the silence. I think that this happens online too, judging from the lack of DT activity and the amount of totally unrelated postings. What would happen if we only got one jam a day that didn't have a lot of junk mail in it? Would people freak out? I know I depend on a certain amount of crap in my mail box, and feel bad if there isn't at least a flyer from a local church or a misdelivered letter. An empty mailbox makes me sad!

Oh well. Someone start posting lyrics from original material, let's have the critics step out of the closet and get some good technical discussions going relating to literature for a change.
