As a big time Rush fan, I think you need to listen to Rush a little more
closely. For example, listen to the beginning of The Enemy Within
followed by Spirits in the Material World. Practically the same
bass and guitar riffs. Or listen to the beginning of Everyday
Glory. Definitely sounds like something The Edge might do.

Obviously not everything sounds like U2 or The Police but there are
numerous places where the influence can be heard. Rush themselves have
even admitted being influenced by U2 and The Police at one point or
    another during their careers.

Yikes. It looks like it's decision time. Time to decide if you
want to become Dream Theater's definition of a "real" band (ie, don't
have day jobs =). Of course, I'm the least qualified person to comment
on this. I've never been in a band, nor ever will be, and I don't even
own Superior's disc (hmmm, I think I'll email Noise Records again =).
But damn that must be a tough choice; I'm not sure I could leave the
security(?) of my job and career for something like a rock band.

On the other hand, I have yet to hear ONE negative comment about
Superior, and I've heard alot. On the Internet, that's no small feat,
and I would hate to see a band that's making such waves be sidelined
because of conflicting "real world" schedules. Whatever happens, just
make sure that no serious rifts occur due to different band members'
priorities in life. Please, keep the faith. =)

Sorry this is off-topic (what isn't these days? =), but this situation
just struck me as one of those deep, "Hmmm, what would I do?" questions.
What do other jammers think? Anyone here ever taken the plunge and dropped
everything in their life to try and fulfill their fantasy of being a
rock star? There's gotta be some good stories somewhere out there...

What pictures are those? My CD has none of those pictures! Actually, I've seen this release, and the pictures are the same that you can see in the booklet. Is that one of those new releases of WDADU? Is there any difference from the others?

Ah, but it is! His version has a different jacket; in addition. it also has the little-known DT instrumental "NM2112". Yes, indeed, this is the rarest of all DT tracks. It also might explain the content on this list the past month.

I don't bash Nirvana because they're trendy. I bash them because I don't like them. And I happen to like NIN. When it comes to bashing things because they're trendy, I like to bash the poeple that LIKE NIN and Nirvana because they're trendy. Speaking of trendy, I thought this might ne of interest to you guys. On the last page of Request (a real bad magazine IMHO, but I have a free subscription for being a Sam Goody club member.) is a feature that is called Indie or Outie. It's all about trends in the pop indie world (i.e. Taco Bell, short candy colored hair), and it says prog rock is in and low-fi is out, and it also says being able to play your instrument is in and making the most of three chords is out. Is this true? Are we actually going to be noticed for a change? I hope prog doesn't become too trendy. Its been said a million times, but I don't want to see people wearing Green Day or Offspring hats with DT or Rush shirts.

    >I'm sorry about this Ben, but the Best ending is Only a Matter of Time, >and >that happens to be permanent. Not even DT can outdo that one! >Just feel the crecendoHell's yeah!!!! That is definately the best ending. It's just so powerful.

well, i think you're looking too much on the talent side then. granted, talented music is fun, i'm a guitarrist, i study theory, i think john petrucci is one of the finest, its a rush to figure out and play, and a rush to hear the masterpieces they create, as well as your own. but that doesnt mean nirvana sucks... sure, kurt cant play a solo to save his life, but the music is real adrenaline flowing, or dark and skangly. (i just made that word up, dont hold it against me :) as far as being mad because he's famous and you're not, thats not something you should be mad at... you have the choice to play three chords and puke onstage, you just choose to fight the other way and immerse yourself in the style of music you find the most fun. thats pretty much the same way kurt felt about what he did.. just in the other direction :) dont compare an apple to an orange, or something... its like saying youre mad because you've been studying guitar for 7 years and the guy across the street made some lemonade everybody likes... i'm not trying to flame you or anything, i'm just trying to hopefully open your mind the way mine was a while ago, cuz i used to think the exact same way, and i find i enjoy things a hell of a lot better now that i'm not comparing them to something irrelevant... if you bite into an apple expecting to taste an orange, or simply WANTING to taste an orange, you're not gonna like that apple much ;)

    >I do agree with the idea to stop putting music into genres, though :).

keep on rockin' in the musically free to be how you wanna be world :)

That's ok... I just hope you've learnt something from this ;-) I'm really genuinely sorry for my lengthy outbursts too... I should *never* have said (some of) the things I said... Please don't think I'm an asshole... I'm just a dorq with an attitude :-> (a bad one)

It's just that narrow-minded comments really piss me off, especially when they're just like "This sux" and "That sux", without any further explanation... Those are just void comments... Empty statements...

Some people base half their lives on the music they listen to... When someone comes along and says it's CRAP, then that hurts ! Don't ask me *why*... It just *does*...

To me, it's kinda like guys, who are obviously insecure about their own sexuality, telling jokes about gay people... I admit I used to laugh at those jokes, about 10 years ago... *Then* I realized someone in the room might actually *be* gay... That person might be *really* hurt by those jokes... Now, I don't even wanna hear those jokes.

That's why I try to be sensitive to other people's feelings when stating an opinion... You do *that* by saying it's *your* opinion, and making sure you actually have a reason to back it up. For instance, *don't* say *this band* sucks, when you've never actually heard their music... And *don't* call someone an asshole before you've met them in person :-) That's the lesson *I* got out of all this :-> I'll probably make the same mistake again :-[

Hey Jammers.... I called up Ray Daniels today...Identified myself as Adam Rehobeth of Rolling Stone... I Asked him about Gary Cherone being the New Singer of Van Halen:

    he replied : " No Comment "

I then asked him if David Lee Roth was still singing for Van Halen :

    he replied : " No Comment "

I then asked him if he was managing Nuno Betancourt's new solo group: he replied : " It's no solo group...it's his new band"

I then asked him what Gary Charone was doing :

he replied : "He is in California, working on material with a new group"

I then skrewed the pooch and asked him if I could guess the street, would he tell me and immediately asked if he was working on Cold Water Canyon Ave (EVH's street address) :

he then asked : "Who IS THIS AGAIN!!!"

So I realized that the phone call was a dead issue...so I proceeded to ask him if he thought that Rush fan's were going to arrive at concerts with snipper rifles, due to SRO managements choice on banning the Working Man CD in Canada:

    He hung up on me!

    Oh Well...

I can't wait til I'm 18 and get credit cards...I'll spend all my cash on Ibanez USA Customs. I played an awesome one at the great House of Guitars. It had curly maple top, mahogany back, Dimarzio pickups, kicked serious ass. Did you really have to spend another $1500 for the same guitar with a different color scheme? :)

    >Jacksons are still better :) . >

<gasp> Hell no! :) Top of the line Jacksons are cool, but I like Ibanez better. Mostly for stupid reasons like cooler finishes and no annoying pointy headstock, but I like the neck's and pickups on stock Ibanez much better anyways, especially the one's with Dimarzios.

Carvin makes pretty good stuff. Vai only uses it as a power amp though. The majority of his sound comes from Bogner and Marshall heads, I'm not sure what his exact setup is though. I might get one, but I don't like the idea of not trying before buying.

I think the live version of Learning to Live is the best. Too bad it just fades out on the album version, even though it's cool. I love how all the riff's just fit together there...

By the way, anybody who doesn't own the new Eric Johnson or Steve Vai go buy it now, or I'll come after you. Even if you're not a guitar player, this is what musicianship is all about. Cheers.
