Hey all,
I just finished reading Mike's thoughts. WOW. I mean I remember when I
first joined the JAM. This 'kid' (no slam intended, just an impression, bare
with me...) was putting together a DT Boot, and was keeping us all up to date
on all kinds of logistical nightmares he was dealing with. My impression,
from the posts of his I read at that time, that this was a kid who was
getting into some new realm. He was dealing with pressings, masterings, all
kinds of BS, at the same time while telling us he was moving, and his parents
house was still getting his mail; all kinds of stuff that left me with an
impression that this was a young guy who was really taking the bull by the
horns. Of course I purchased Subconscious, and was pleasantly surprised.
The exchange did take some time, and I was a little concerned as this was MY
first online exchange. Everything ended up working out (of course). I ended
up leaving the jam for over a year (due to circumstances beyond my control).
I come back and I see that Mike has achieved a much revered status. At
first I was thinking "hey, isn't this just a kid who put together a bunch of
boots and is a die hard fan??" Well, By the depth of his last post, I guess
I was wrong. It seems to me that a lot of what he says has been true for him;
and CAN be for anyone who has not yet abandoned their sense of community ( a
rare find today in the 'REAL' world). I admit that is quite an idealistic
way of looking at things; Most of us 'older' people, I am afraid have gone
through this phase, and a lot have come out the other side dissillusioned
(anyone over 30 is welcome to refute this, but remember, _WE_ are not a
typical selection of the over 30 club). Mike, if I can offer ANY advice for
the future, it is this: NEVER lose sight of the "big picture'. A lot of
shit happens. A lot of adversity exists. A LOT of forces will try to erode
away your resolve. Let NONE of it shake your belief, and hopefully, you will
be able to retain your ideals forever. Keep the faith, dude!!
To mike: Congrats on actually finding a partner to share your vision. That
is another rarity!!
Life is a test, and at the end, what are you going to look back at; What
REALLY COUNTS!??
Sorry, but HE started it!!!!!!!!!
L8R,
Brian

P.S. I really hope that I did not go too far; I am NO Mike Bahr (Is that to
be the new battle cry???:), but I just thought I could give a little
perspective that some here may not have had.

Is anyone planning on going to the Rock n Roll Cafe for Progressive Nite
tomorrow (Wed)? I missed out on the last two because of school, but I should
have no excuses tomorrow. I called and the guy didn't know who would be
playing, so any info would be greatly appreciated.

I can agree with you somewhat regarding Shadow Gallery. They are good
but not great and their songwriting seems inconsistent to me. One minute
cliche metal riffs and then suddenly some fairly good breaks with neat
time changes. I think they're still trying to find their sound. What
gets me is their vocals. The lead vocalist is ok but the production
seems a bit overdone on both him and the harmonies and he does try too
hard to sound like Tate. His overemphasis on pronunciation of the lyrics
also seems too over the top.
I expect they will get better and they certainly have the musicianship in
the band to do so. Where I disagree with you is whether to listen to
Green Day as THEY ARE PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING THEY'RE NOT: MUSICIANS!

Anyhow,
As a drummer, I must comment quickly on my opinion of the individual
drummers on this CD. I then shall be finished talking about the rush
tribute unless someone else wants to comment to me directly.
As usual, and what I was expecting, Mike Portnoy was the drumming
highlight of the CD. His best performances are in By-tor, analog kid (I
saw distict resemblences to portions of learning to live and 6:00 in
portions of this song!), the trees and la villa, although he did a bit
much in playing fancy time at the end of la villa. Further, I LOVED how
the group on la villa emulated the improv. on the MONSTERS portion of la
villa as RUSH does on Exit Stage Left - excellent!! Also, the added
touch of a portion of Anthem at the end of By-tor was a great touch.
Kaiser was more than adequate on Mission - perhaps my favorite rendition
on the CD overall. Kaiser emulates Neil Peart very well in this song.
Now, Deen Castronovo! What a surprise! I have never heard of this guy,
but REALLY would like to find out what group he plays for, b/c he is
excellent!!! He did a very good job in Anthem, although I cannot say the
same about the chipmunk vocals! Deen absolutely NAILED the drum part in
Natural Science! That was extremely impressive!! He got all the fills,
transitions, solo - nearly exact to Neil's version. I can't say that I
liked his performace in YYZ - I think he got a bit busy, and as a Neil
Peart fan, too, I missed hearing the classic ride cymbol pattern during
the "chorus" of YYZ. Oh well - he was still awesome though.
Closer to the heart was good - missed some of the expected fills of Neil,
but we cannot expect everything to be the same. I likes the 2112 to
finish off the song - quite nice indeed!
Reinert did a great job in Red Barchetta, as did everyone else.
Freewill was done well by Brockman, too. Although the song seemed a bit
choppy compared to RUSH. Didn't quite flow the way rush does.
Finally, I have to put a plug in for Billy Sheehan on bass. I really
enjoyed hearing him play bass - very good indeed.

Well no, in fact. I guess we don't wanna go through THIS again, but I'd say
the Black Album is probably the best Metallica, save "Ride The Lightning."
The new record, though, is pretty damn awesome, itself.

Just got working man, only a month late, but before i get to that.....
About the Smurfs... WHO??? Lemme guess, they have Papa Smurf as band
manager, they brought in Azarel to shred on lead guitar, kept Brainy on
bass, the girl smurf on vocals (what was her name again??) and uhhhh,
Sleepy (was he a smurf or a dwarf? i get 'em confused) laying down a
mezmerizing, trance inducing rhythm line.......
and further to the British guy who mentioned 'em (sorry, didn't catch yer
name on the quikscan), does "are you being served" qualify as good british
comedy? Because I like that show just fine........
ok, on to the other part
like it sez up top, just got working man, and to tell truth, my fave song
it is Natural Science.....NOT because it is the best, LVS, YYZ, red
barchetta, and a few more have it beat, but because maybe my expectations
were so low on the vocals.....I was dying laughing (happy laughter) at
Townsend's vocals, which i think are cool, especially those Little Richard
impersonation (one is around 5:45 or so)....sure, he coulda chopped some
of the screeches in half, but nevertheless, I ENJOYED that rendition.....
A Vocal job that bugged me, on the other hand, was Sebastian Bach's take
on Working Man....almost ruined the album for me before i'd heard the
other 12 songs...did like his stuff on Jacob's LAdder, however....Mark
Slaughter suffered from trying to do a Geddy voice, and missing a few
notes.....i have a slaughter album, and also a Vinnie Vincent album (Yes,
I admitted it!!! (then again,I picked both up for 50 cents apiece....),
and like Pat D. said, he *never* sounds so chipmunky on those......
too many damn dots ruining my day (or was that the start of school??)

Got this off the STYX list. Enjoy!
This guy wants to be a proctologist, and he wants to be a really good
proctologist, so he decides to go down to the morgue after class and
practice a little. Well, he uncovers the first guy and there is a cork
in his butt! He thinks it's a little strange, so he pulls it out and music
starts playing!
"...On the road again, just can't wait to get on the road again...".
The guy really freaks out! He runs and gets the M.A. and drags the poorguy
back to the table. "Look!" he says, and pulls the cork out again,
"...On the road again..."
The M.A. is totally unimpressed..."So what?" he says.
"Isn't that the most amazing thing you've ever seen?", the guy asked.
"Are you kidding?" says the M.A. "Any asshole can sing country music!"
BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

I would suggest that you take a look at some of the new Fender
line. I have tested several of their tube units with a strat and they
have a great clean sound, particularly if you are looking for a
Claptonesque tone. The distortion is iffy. You won't get a good heavy
crunch from one of these things, but you will get a nice present sound
that cuts through easily. The neck pickup will sound best for leads.

Some comments and a rebuttal regarding the Rush protest (my URL for which is given above)..... Sorry, Mithrandir (or was it Mojo? sometimes it's hard to tell the difference since their tone is similar), but album sales and boycotts DO make a difference. It wasn't always that way, but ever since the inception of the SoundScan system, record sales charts are based to a much-larger degree on actual store sales.
Not every store reports to SoundScan, and I kinda wish they could put a sticker on the door (like ASCAP and BMI stickers) saying which ones do and which ones don't. But in general, the mainstream chain record stores -do- report via inventory control which albums are selling; it's handled in the UPC scanning at checkout.
-I- am not boycotting T4E (I know some Jammers are, and that's cool with me). I'm just deferring my purchase for a week as a gentle protest. They might be a 400-lb gorilla, but in this case I think they're a 400-lb gorilla IN THE WRONG. --Paul, Rush fan since SIGNALS

Let's wait 'til DT has released TNE (The Next Album :)) and has something to promote. It's been said before, but please, don't waste a letter to these shows now; it'll only piss them off for later.
Getting Rush on one of those shows is a cool idea, but it's probably a bit too late -- I'll bet the bands are already booked for the next month or two, and they would likely have already been contacted.
