Sorry for all the useless jibber, but I have three days of jams to catch up
on (and boy are my eyes tired!)
First, a warm hearted sympathy goes out to Rick and his wife. may she recover
quickly.
Now on with the useless jibber
>Anybody else out there catch Bela and co. on PBS tonight? They jammed
>along with the Boston Pops! Wow. Talk about phenomenol bass... I
>don't own any of their albums at present. Recommendations, anyone?
WHAT!?!?!?!? Bela Fleck was on PBS! Shit! I can't believe i missed it

_I_ never met Charlie. A friend of mine did. Didn't I make that clear enough?
I'll ask him for you guys that if he sees him again, to at least do 2 or 3.

I disliked her from the first time I heard YOK. I put her off as one of those
"annoying chick band" type of music (ex.-No Doubt is on the radio that girls
voice really annoys me so I'm gonna put Anthrax back on.), but since my life
started to suck, I've been paying attention to lyrics a lot closer and I have
a lot of respect for Alanis as a songwriter. She can write some good songs,
plus the music itself has a whole "Fuck-you, fuck-the-world" type of feeling
to it, and that's how I feel right now.
> I can tell you right now, wouldn't work... I don't know if you were here

About this time last year. I remember cuz that was the first thing I remember
ever seeing on the jam, and I was introduced to the jam by reading the thank
you in ACOS. Gee, can't believe I've been on the jam for a year now. Seems
like only yesterday I was posting 20 times a day!

I hate people like that. I wish they would open their mind a little. Speaking
of Metallica, I was running on very little sleep yesterday and started dosing
off in theory. My teacher noticed this and got my attention by saying, "You
can't compare two different styles of music in the same light. For example,
you can't say a Beethoven sonata is no good compared to Load by Metallica,
You can't say Beethoven sucks because he doesn't use two fuzztone guitars..."
I thought this was funny. Then he talked about people that listen to music to
fit in and I wanted to talk about the alternative thing (Something I feel
very strongly on) but I realized the kid next to me loves the Offspring and
Green Day. Oh well.
>Dale's gonna have some serious competition for next month's #1 slot.

Oh, come now. You all know that I've been condensing all of my posts into
one. But if Dale wants a little competition...

anyone have an opinion on G//Z/R? It is Geezer Butler on bass, Deen on drums

>The unfortunate truth is that not many people like Dream Theater. What do we
>really have to complain about, though? Why do we need them to get played on
>the radio?
Yeah, but it really is more of a thrill to hear a song on the radio that you
aren't expecting. It's like a surprise. I listened WSOU in NJ all summer and
they play DT every so often. One day I heard PS in my friend's car and even
though I don't normally listen to that song, I cranked it just because it's
cool to hear DT unexpectedly. If you put the CD on, you know it's coming on.
Get my point? As far as DT going mainstream, I believe that if DT got some
rotation on MTV, they would get popular because of this fucking brainwashed
"Alternative Nation" that we're living in. If they believed DT to be
alternative, they would get interested. They don't pay attention to what time
signature a song is in or how talented the guys are. I played DT for this
girl in my school. She wanted to know if they were alternative. I told her
yeah, and she said she liked it. In turn, she got her friend into it, who in
turn bought ACOS, who was comparing who was hotter out of the 4 of them. So
it goes to show you people don't know what they like. End of story.

Scott,
You missed the point of the exchange on Cairo. The person who told the
jam not to buy it HADN"T LISTENED TO IT! No one is forcing anyone to
like a band on this digest (I think). I was the one who responded to the
"Don't buy Cairo" because the recommendation was being made with no clue
to the music. If someone listens and then doesn't like it, cool. Your
opinion on Shadow Gallery is fine given you at least formed your opinion
AFTER listening.

from what i gather after late nite discussion on irc, most people
that don't like his voice don't like it due to his screaming. i, for
one, like his voice tremendously. (btw, check out Vai, "Sex and
Religion" if you like Townsend). he's got one of the more original
voices i've heard. but hey, to each their own, i think it's just a love it/hate it
kinda thing.

Yes! And, that's the kind of stuff that I think should be put on the actual
studio albums. When people hear things like that, they'll realize his talent
and how well he fits with the band, and might help sales.

I don't mind Devon's singing and in fact Rescue Me or Bury Me has always
been my favorite vocal performance of the whole disc but....
I always thought that was Vai himself who sang that track!
if so then I hope he keeps singing.
James Labrie can be a bit cheesy sometimes but hey, he still blows away
anyone else I've heard. I also wish that he would stay towards the clean
side just because it pains me to hear him scream knowing that those
wonderful vocal chords are flapping like a flag in a hurricane. I want to

I agree. I think that his screams are irritating live, and he tends to slur
his words together. I understand that there may be a situation where he is
tired, hot, whatever, but I like to say I have a pretty large collection of
DT bootlegs, and I haven't heard many shows where James can -really-hit those
notes the way he does on the album. That's all IMHO. Flame away!!!!
