Just so you know, I posted about IF a while back. Olaf Bode has a few
bootlegs with IF on it (I lost Olaf's address, but I think Scott Cook has
it). The trade never went through because I didn't have anything that wasn't
on Olaf's list, so I had to send postage to Germany plus double the amount of
blanks needed.

Hello all!
It's been a long, wet summer and it is time for me to return! Ahh...its
good to see the war, strife and bitterness of the Ytsejam has not faded
away...It reminds me of the good things in life...like DTC,
Bafu-commentaries, and endless digests filling my in-box! :)
Anyway, I have discovered quite a few good things in music during my sojourn:
1) Fates Warning...easily one of my favorite bands now and forever.
This summer I got a good listen of PARALLELS and NO EXIT. The Ivory Gate
of Dreams is just...well...uhh...AWESOME!!! I love 20+ minute songs, and
this one KICKS! Parallel's is unequalled!
DTC - FOr those who don't already know (not many, I hope) James does
backing vocals on "Life in Still Water" on Parallels (Song is my PF).
Also, on Perfect Symmetry, Kevin Moore does keys on At Fates Hands.
2) SAVATAGE - Handful Of Rain has to be one of those albums that all
Prog fans must own. I picked up DWD last X-mas when I saw everyone
gabbing about it here, and I was impressed, but not too much. On a limb,
I picked up HOR anD WOW! This album is great in all aspects...guitars
(Testament's Skolnik!!!), top vocals, emotion...its got the works!
3) New RUSH!!!!!!!!
I got TFE today, and I am thoroghly impressed....like I saw mentioned
earlier, it sounds new and refreshed...along the same lines of
Counterparts, with a bit of VICTOR rolled in...hard guitars...not too
much on the synths, but its still RUSH.
Well, thats about all for now...gotta run and get kicked out of a AAS
pledge class! :)

About the lack of "emotion" in James' voice:
Here we see another example of another fallacy that has been fed to us by
eMpTyV. Virtually every pop/alternative singer today equates "emotion" with
bad and/or scratchy vocals (the best example of this is Alanis IMNSHO).
Quite frankly, I cannot remember the last time that I heard someone singing
on Mtv that had any talent. When a talented singer like James comes along
and actually _sings_, it sounds odd to most people because they are used to
hearing the grunting and groaning that usually passes for vocal performance
in typical music on the radio or Mtv. The most emotional performances that
I have ever heard are university or professional level vocal performances
that were technically flawless, yet conveyed the feeling of the music with
perfect clarity. It is such a rare occurrence for a vocalist that is as
talented as James to be performing in a more mainstream setting (as opposed
to broadway or opera or other classical forms) that we don't realize what a
fantastic performer he really is. Of course, this topic could lead into the
whole phenomenon of MTV elevating no-talent garage bands to the status of
demigods whilst talented and educated musicians live their lives in complete
anonymity, but I won't get into that. In summary, James has more vocal
talent in his left pinky toe than every alternative singer in the entire
world combined.

All right, I seem to see a trend here. Firstly, let me say that magellan and
Cairo are not metal, if you are looking for all Magna Carta bands to be metal
bands, forget it. Secondly, don't bother buying Tyson fights on
;pay-per-view, and especially don't buy tickets. Unless you like wasting
money on 90 second fights. Tip for boxing fans, if you want to see good
fighting, don't watch heavyweight boxing. The underweights actually give
better fights, from my experience.

no flame... i've got quite a few boots m'self, and granted, james dont hit
the notes live necessarily, but he puts so much more into it... the screams
would be annoying if there was nothing in them, but i think after recording
and letting the songs bring alive their meaning by the time they hit the
stage thats when the more emotional side of the preformance comes. the
albums, which tracks are done over and over, etc. etc. just lose out a bit
on the feeling after all those times... a different kind of output is done
onstage, one towards a crowd begging for it, one take at things, and really
pushing the limits... all the complications done live with just five guys is
simply amazing to hear, so i guess you could say I favor james onstage :)

i saw that someone mentioned testament and couldn't resist. james
murphy is no longer in testament because there is no more testament.
they have broken up. james murphy (who has a solo album out) and greg
christian are said to be working together. chuck billy, eric peterson
and the old drummer from death angel have formed a band called dfg (or
"dog faced gods").
as for the g//z/r album, GET IT!!! it kicks ass. i can't believe that
a 50-something guy, geezer butler, wrote something that rocks this
much. while it sounds nothing like ozzy, a good way to describe it
would be early sabbath modernized. i like burton c. bell's vocals, how
is fear factory? i heard that "demanufacture" is really good... any
opinions?

YES. You'd really like it I do believe. 8) I do, and I got it because I'm
a fanatical FF fan. Bell is SO intense especially live. The gzr thing is a
little repetetive, but overall I'd rate it around 8 out of a 10 scale.
Geezer's bass really comes through on the album of course, and it's mostly
downtuned death type metal. The last song on the end called Cycle of Sixty
even sounds like an old sabbath song I think, kind of similar in style to
Planet Caravan. Here's the band lineup:
Burton C. Bell--vocals
Geezer Butler---keyboards and that other thingy hmmm. figure it out! haha j/k
Deen Castronovo--drums
Pedro Howse--guitar
And about FNM...what the hell is this??? Please tell me they aren't breaking
up or losing Bordin, he's awesome. Oh Say it ain't so Joe!

Dammit, people are NOT THAT DUMB! I bet money that there are people smarter
than both of us that like Alanis Morrisette and Green Day. Do you work at
MTV? Maybe MTV plays things because because they're popular, and not vice
versa. Sweeping generalizations suck big one.

>sounds on the Working Man cd. Sure he does not sound like Geddy but I
>like his voice. Why does everyone hate him? Is it his voice or that he
>sounds nothing like Geddy?
Well, the reason I don't like him is not because he doesn't sound like
Geddy, heck, NONE of the singers on Working Man sound like Geddy, but I just
don't like the way he pretty much only screams.
Vocals on a cd, along with guitar, are really the 2 biggest deciding factors
for me liking a band or not. It's for that reason that I love Dream
Theater, Fates Warning, Queensryche, etc. Savatage is an exception, I
really don't like Jon Oliva's voice, but the rest of the music is
incredible. Plus, now they have Zach who I like very much.
I love "Natural Science" however, it's a great song. Actually, as much as I
hate to admit it, Devin's voice is kind of growing on me. There are still
the moments that just irritate the hell out of me, but overall I think I've
gotten used to him being on there :) It's just that his vocals (IMO) can't
compare to those of James LaBrie & Ray Alder.
Oh, and I have to agree with the comment made about Mark Slaughter (I really
can't remember who posted it)... I really can't stand his singing on Working
Man either :) Heck, I like Devin better! :) I too used to like Slaughter,
actually still like the *occasional* Slaughter song, but that "come on...
yeah!" thing he does is just plain awful!
Before I end this, I'm sorry I didn't post about this sooner, but to Rick
Terry... wanted to say that I hope Sue gets well real soon and that
everything works out for the both of you, in health and financial matters.
Good luck.
Bye all, and take care :)

Does that mean they just played the outro and not the whole

Whether or not this was ever played live, it has been documented
