Well, I saved $50 by NOT buying the Tyson/Seldon "fight" and bought some new
CD's. Cairo and Magellan were...well...horrible. I thought they might be a
bit like Shadow Gallery (which I love), but they were both very weak.
Threshold on the other hand was pretty good. Sounds a bit like the newer
Metal Church at times, but overall, they rock.

    Hello-

To the person who asked about The Inner Game of Music:
This is a book written by Barry Green. It was published by Anchor Press,
    Garden City, N.Y., 1986.
The book deals with the problems of performing publicly and how to
overcome them. It is based on another book called The Inner Game of Tennis
by Timothy Gallwey, which I just began reading. Don't let the title mislead
you, TIGo Tennis does not only benefit tennis players. The principles which
are taught can have an impact on many aspects of your life, including self-
esteem and unlocking the abilities present in us which we often supress.
I have heard that so many musicians, classical musicians mostly,
because of the psychological rigors of performing, were reading TIGo Tennis
that Barry Green decided to write a similar book specifically about music,
    thus TIGo Music.
If anyone wants to read either one I got TIGoT from my college book
store. You may have more luck finding TIGoM at your local college Music
library instead of the book store.

    Hope this helped,

    Scott Daugherty

    Ben said:

    >I think I figured it out. James shows off in the wrong ways (and showing off
    >ain't a bad thing). Take Mariah Carey for instance....she's got a fucking
    >huge range....but when she sings, she adds tons of embellishments and
    >schtuff. James doesn't really so much. Moreso live, but I like to hear that
    >kind of improvisational stuff on studio recordings too. Now, I don't mean
    >that James should sing like Mariah Carey....but if your instrument is going
    >to be out in the front of the band, and vocals almost always are, then make
    >it a little wacky. :)

I just wanted to offer a dissenting opinion and say that I prefer the
opposite: James' embellishments just get a bit too annoying for my
taste, and in my opinion is one of the reasons he has a rather poor
reputation for a live performer (not that I agree with this sentiment,
but I've heard it said alot). I much prefer the clean, pure voice that
is prevalent on the studio albums (particularly I&W), and wish he would
stay under control like this in a live setting (this isn't to say he
doesn't come up with some nice surprises live; that note on UaGM that
he sings an octave higher is pretty cool...)

So I think it's just a matter of opinion and taste, Ben. Of course, I
hope this doesn't come across as criticism (as I don't think your posts
have been). I still think he's the best vocal performer out there today
(yes, even better than Geoff Tate, who IMHO has been hurt by cigarettes
    and age).

Yeah I'm responding to my own post....bad form I know, but hey... So..I typed that post this morning, sent it and left the computer lab.....wearing my Home For the Holidays shirt. I cross the street and to my surprise..someone says "Hey!!! Dream Theater! I haven't seen any Dream Theater fans here before..." Whoah...I post re: lack of DT fans at UMCP and run right into one....Then: A few hours later I am going to the computer lab to check my mail (and as it turns out post this note..) and *someone else* says "Don't see too many Dream Theater fans on campus here...everyone I ask says 'never heard of them' but I'm like 'they're the best band in the world!' " Yow. Now. perhaps posting this will bring more out of the woodwork, I'll post about that, bringing more into existence and pretty soon we'll have another 10,000 or so fans here in UMCP. Then we'll change the name to UMDT and....

As I said in an earlier post, the Baltimore Awake show was in October 27, 1994 (Iknow the date from memory, and still have the ticket stub for reference...) and I thought they DID play it. I remember thinking that the only songs from Awake that they didn't play were SDV and Scarred. Not that my setlist memory is magnificient.....;-)

Well, I hate to say, but I >think it sucks. I could be wrong, maybe it will grow on me or something.

Well, As everybody knows, I'm a Fates Warning nut (Parallels on IRC = me). First of all, Chasing Time is a compilation. No offense or anything, but if you didn't know that then I don't think you really listened to it enough to give it a chance, considering there are two different singers and each album has a different style. The thing about Fates is that they're like DT. Except for their first album, nobody sounds like them. Some songs are very DT like however. At Fates Fingers even has Kevin Moore on keys!

Something a lot of people do is just surface listen. They listen to the riff and the melody. But the great thing about bands like DT and Fates is that there's much more than that. There are harmonized parts between guitars, keys, and bass. You might an odd meter thrown in to spice things up. Different grooves between the bass and guitar riff. Fates Warning I believe is one of only a couple bands I've heard that TRULY takes advantage of having two guitars. They almost never play the same thing. My favorite examples are Monument and the 11th hour.

That's all I have to offer for now. Ciao.

SHOWS BEING TREED: The shows being treed are the 12/27/95 and 12/30/95 New London Dream Theater shows. The 12/27 show is about 105 minutes and the 12/30 show is about 115 minutes. Here is the set list for both shows:

12/27 Wake Up! (intro) -> Under a Glass Moon -> The Mirror/Lie -> Lifting Shadows Off a Dream -> Mini Medley (The Rover, Killers, Damage Inc., In the Flesh, and Hear of the Sunrise) -> Innocence Faded -> ACOS -> Surrounded -> Voices -> Silent Man (Electrical) and Pull Me Under

12/30 Wake Up! (intro) -> 6:00 -> Caught in a Web -> Lie -> Lifting Shadows off a Dream -> Guitar Solo -> Scarred -> Surrouded -> Keys Solo -> Erotomanis (w/drum solo) -> Voices -> Silent Man -> Pull Me Under -> Encore Perfect Strangers.

TREE INFORMATION: Here are the following type of people I am looking for. A dubber should be able to do dubs for a maximum of 4 people .

    - D>D: I will make digital clones of this show for n people.

    - D>A: I will make analog tapes, from DAT, of this show for n people.

    - A>A: I will make analog copies, from an analog copy, of this show for n people. - AL I do not have any dubbin capabilities.

    HOW DO I APPLY?

The ONLY way to apply is to send an email message to me: darwin@bcl.net.

Your subject MUST BE one of the following three. 'n' is where you put how many people you can spin for, and if left blank, defaults to 4. 1 person = 3 analog tapes, or 2 60m DATs since we are doing 2 shows. If you only want one of shows, I may be able to work something out.

DT D>nD DT D>nA DT A>nA DT AL

For example, if you have analog dubbing capabilities and you honestly have time to spin tapes for 5 people, your subject would be: DT A>5A.

Please fill out this form as your application. Send just it, not this entire message, or your application dies. If your address (both street and email) will be changing within 2 months, PROVIDE AN ALTERNATIVE ADDRESS AS WELL. If you don't know it yet, neither do I, so don't apply. Closing date for applications is 9/16/96.

If for some reason you do not fulfill your dubbing obligtions within a reasonable period of time, you will NEVER be allowed in a tree that I administer.

(i.e., clones are 00 regardless of input) : One more time, for how many PEOPLE can you spin this show? -or If D>A: : What brand/model is your analog deck? : Is your analog deck 2 or 3 heads? : One more time, for how many PEOPLE can you spin this show? -or If A>A: : Do you have a single, dual-well dubbing deck? I know what you mean, I was in Germany, the Netherlands and France in April and totally fell in love with these countries, I especially enjoyed Paris. All the history in that city was amazing! To see Notre Dame and realize that this place is over 800 years old. If that would've been built in this Decase it would have been considered a masterpiece.

How is this DT related? DT has played in Paris, so there you are! ;)

Scarred was played live during the x-mas shows; but SDV has never been done live, probably because it's Kevin's song and they don't want to pay him for covering it.

Why does everyone seem to hate devon townsend? He is one of my favorite singers, and Sex and Religion is one of my favorite albums. Devon has a grrreat range; he can screech like his nuts were put in a blender (Survive, Down Deep into the Pain) and sing with a great, solid voice (Rescue Me or Bury Me). He is really versatile, and I think some of you guys give him too much shit. By the way, a G3 tour date was announced for San Antonio Tuesday. The date is October 18 at Sunken Garden Theater. I can't wait! I gotta go, the Simpsons are coming on in a few! 'Lates!
