No math requirement at your school... Attention to detail is what they always told me! 2. Iron Maiden Someone asked about the new "best of" album. I wouldn't buy it unless you don't own any Maiden records, because there really isn't much of interest on it, just one new song and one or so demo-type songs. Out of like thirty tunes, that's not much. Get the re-issues with the b-sides instead. 3. Lighthouse for the Blind, etc. Damon, why can't you drive? There seem to be quite a few drivers around here, in and around Wash- ington, who couldn't possibly drive more poorly than one "without full use of vision." 4. MNF Tonight the Packers should win. >What about for a Guitar Player?
i'd take (or have choosen so far) "voices" and "scarred". some professional guitarists i know have been "floored" (as you say) by those and as far as i know, are definite fans by now.
>Or a Bass Player?
bass is pretty well hidden on "awake", thus i've picked "metropolis" (it's very common as i've read). *BUT* one of the bassists heard a mistake in the end of the finger-tapping section. it may be that he tried to find an excuse for himself, but the guy is very well educated and knows the instrument well.
>Or a KeyBoard Player?
in the beginning it was "space-dye vest", but "wait for sleep" is tighter and easier to grab ahold of. i've heard some amazing stories about people's feelings while listening to "wait for sleep", but that's another fairy-tale.
>Or a Singer?
definitely "innocence faded" for some people. again, "voices" and "scarred" (especially the latter) work for most of them best. some live interpretations on "live at the marquee" are very interesting too.
drummer... i give them "awake" and they come back numb. "6:00" and "caught in a web" work wonders. let alone everything else.
there can be no definite pick. i kinda like it. :-)

it looks as if another facet to the almighty "DTC" has arisen. "alanis morissette sucks" is just another way of saying "when will the next album be out".
it pains me.
first off, she does sing about going down on somebody in a theater. does that definitely mean that she *sucks* in the metaphorical sense of the word?
secondly, if somebody openly states that (s)he likes something you don't, there's no point assuming they're an idiot. i happen to like alanis too. i also like king crimson, dream theater, ludwig van beethoven and pepsi cola. which part of me is that of an imbecile and which isn't?
by the way, i am far from being the only one into dream theater and alanis morissette at the same time. email fazz@spin.ee and ask him for the list.
currently planning to play: "parallels", fates warning (just got the cd, along with savatage's "handful of rain"... i can't wait.)
ps. if anybody wants to flame, i can arrange a special address for myself so you could send all flames there. i won't read them, i promise. :-))

how did i get into dream theater? i borrowed a tape from a friend of mine, just to hear what queensryche's "promised land" sounded like. i heard it sounds good. then i let the tape roll on, but having this funny auto-reverse thing going on, i didn't quite realize it wasn't queensryche anymore. it was "awake", and i didn't know it. i was thinking, "wow, queensryche is so *amazingly* good on this album, and geoff's voice is better than it was on "operation: mindcrime", and this instrumental is something new about their music" and so on and so forth, but basically, i enjoyed james' singing from the first second i heard it.

OK, I knew they haven't played SDV...I should have said "IF is the only song they have played Live that i have not heard..."
> well at least i havent seen any ..i think that song is not played live.. > right along there with SDV.. and scarred i think ..if im wrong > corrections are welcome..
Scarred has been played Twice in concert....The Malibu & Birch Hill shows from Christmas
I remember reading the FAQ, but don't remember it saying that they haven't played IF... So now my question is: "Have they Played IF?"

"Innocence Faded" was indeed played live. Mike noted it in his '95 European tour diary (published in one of the Images and Words fanzines). It might not have been played frequently on the tour. (I think I have heard that it was played it least once in the fall of '94 in the U.S.) "Scarred" was definitely played live (I'm an eyewitness: Birch Hill Night Club, Old Bridge, NJ, 12-29-95). It was also played the night before and the night after according to the set lists printed in Images and Words. (You can hear it on the circulating tape of the Birch Hill show.) I don't think it was played on the Waking Up the World tour. Unlike most "ytsejammers," I would have preferred to see "Innocence Faded" than "Scarred" live. Jeff Falk jefffalk@bu.edu

Hi this is my first time writing, I always thought it would be totally about DT, but I gues it does have something to do with them. Anyway, I've noticed that there have been some statements saying that Cairo has too much keys, is that bad? How could you dare say that, when the band we all LOVE & WORSHIP (DT), is filled with great keyboard parts. We all know what an important part the keyboards play in all music, especialy DT, so let's not be ignorant and close our selves out. I now I'm only 17 a yr old keyboardist, and I sometimes think I know everything, but I am damn sure we would be crying our ass off if there were no keys in bands like Deep Purple, Rush, Cairo, and most of all DREAM THEATER.
So remember all you DT fans out there, if you criticize something, you better be damn sure you can do a better job.
Your Pal, Hector Crisantes A.K.A. dt freak, Snapple Boy

Hey, Babs.
yes, it is definitely not the Rush of old, but TFE sounds more energetic, and less stiff than counterparts. It sounds like they were creatively drained on CP, and I like a lot of it. This album is more progressive, and yes, the keys are lacking, which is upsetting but hey, what can you do? I love the album, much better than cP, in fact it's the best album I've heard from Rush in a while. And I love all things Rush, but this album sounds more ... uh what's the word ... fun, creative, like the band has been reborn. LIke coming out of hibernation.

lo ye Jammers,
I had to comment on this, as I group of friends and I came to a rather interesting point about the change in Metallica
>Yes.. but if DT goes COmmercial..their music IS gonna suffer through >some sad changes.. much as Metallica's did..when One got rotation on >mTv.. they said "Whoa we could get used to this" then they made the >Black album..which is still a good one,but has no comparison with And >justice or Puppets,. and now they made Load..which is completely within >the norm of music right now.. simple riffs,no solo's
Metallica changed when Cliff departed and Jason arrived. don't get me wrong, I am not knocking Jason, as a fellow bass player I think he's not too bad. But as most Metallica fans know Jason's first real musical input was on the Black album, I think he only contributed very little to AJFA. I believe that the line-up change also brought about a change in style etc. Oh well, just some ramblings.

This is sure to draw a flame or two, but I can't take it anymore and I have to get it off my chest! Here goes....:
James' voice is fucking great, and it makes me sick that there are people who consider themselves fans and then speak of him like they can do any better. He fits DT like a puzzle piece, and I can't think of anyone I'd rather see with them. Like the rest of the band, he's unique, a professional, and has great timing (yes, good singers need timing too)...try remembering all those un-repetetive lyrics, then try to keep your place in a song with DT while on stage in a noisy concert hall. People that buy DT albums and sit their and whine and critique James to death remind me of people that are offended by nudity but still visit porn web sites. Don't like it? Don't go there!
OK, I said it, and I'm sure someone will want to sling me some shit now. Please send any dirogetory comments directed at me to this email address:

Since our very own Rick Terry has come upon a hardship lately, I feel I should do my part and have my very own "Rick Terry Quotes" post. If you've ever visited #ytsejam and you saw Rick there, you know what a funny guy he is. Rick is the "King Of One-Liners" in my book. Without further adeu, here is some of Rick's best quotes.
"If you can't use compund W on sensitive areas, how do you get rid of penile warts?" -Rick (Rick Terry) "Couldn't I just masturbate with a handful of salt and vinegar chips?" -Rick (Rick Terry) "Rick has a crunchy monkey." -Rick (Rick Terry) "I'm so big they call me Tripod." -Rick (Rick Terry) "The penis - Nature's kickstand for the well endowed." -Rick (Rick Terry) "Men spend the first nine months of there existence trying to get out of the womb and the rest of their lives trying to get right back in!" -Rick (Rick Terry) "You should wear Depends if you flood yourself regularly." -Rick (Rick Terry) "Cows - nature's only dung producing beverage dispenser." -Rick (Rick Terry) "The problem with me is that my thoughts begin rationally and they become demented on the way to the keyboard." -Rick (Rick Terry)
And with that, I leave you, but not without my weekly quote in my sig. This week, the spot is held by Mike Estok. He is 3 week champion. Damn can this boy be quoted well. :)

Well, I did it. On a casing of the music stores in and around Kenmore Square, I went out and ordered Shadow Gallery's CD that has been very much lauded and reviled here on the Jam. I was trying to find a copy of it so I wouldn't have to order it, but no dice. I did happen to find one of the newer American WDADU CD's. (Red Title on the side.) I own a European Import that I found deep in the heart of Minnesota. I also found another gem that I liked, even though I do not own a vinyl player: a picture disc copy of Operation: Mindcrime on vinyl. I think I'll hide that somewhere. It looks very nice. Just waiting for Rush's new one like most of the rest of yall.

PS Dr Teeth! Nice to see you get back on the jam! Long time no see!
PS I'm looking to get into Marillion also, what of Marillion is best (talking both lyrically and musically)? I bought Afraid of Sunlight, and thought it is so-so. It is very laid back, (which is not a bad thing) except for the 2nd song. The jurys still out on a final verdict, tho. I am savin for a CD walkman so I can listen all these discs I own at school, since that's where it seems I'll be livin nowadays.
