This is becoming a trend. First, response@ipmail, then that whole thing about
the guy on vacation and his mail bouncing back to us, or his internet
answering machine, now this delayed mail thing. This list is cursed or
    spooked or something.

everybody else is doing it so...

Here's the story: I was on the second floor of prosound having my guitar
lesson, when i asked my teacher what was the most talented band out there.
(i asked this thinking that there was no way he could come up with a band
more talented than metallica. I know i know. people can change. don't
shoot me. i had been living a musically sheltered life). anyway, in
response to that he said "ever heard of dream theater?" and i'm like "uh,
no." so he takes me down stairs and puts i&w on the humungous stereo
system that all guitar shops have and ff's to the middle section of met.
He told me that this was his favorite part of the album cause everybody
shows off and stuff. so anyway he cranks it and i'm like whoa that rocks.
then when the middle section is over and kj sings "before the leaves..." i
was like aaaaah! high voice! and he goes whatever this guy rocks etc...
(now i know what he musta felt like cause everybody tells me ack! high
voice! when they hear dt) anyway i bought the album despite the high voice
and the rest is history. i have since decided that kjlb has by far the
coolest voice i've ever heard. ya know that awesome post about jaimz in
1821? that was my brother. My first and only convert. i'm so proud
<sniff>. Anybody else have relatives on the jam or are me and mark that
    cool? probably both.

    Craig Wuthrich

    (that's total, not per jam)

Who is this idiot? Obviously somebody needs to educate him on the workings of
progressive music. I wonder what he'd think of MP. Don't get me wrong, he at
least had a more informed opinion, but he doesn't understand progressive
rock. I mean, I like VH and Alex's drumming, but Neil peart will piss all
over Alex. I know that Alex does some of that crazy syncopation in his
drumming. And Geddy's singing? Let's think here. David Lee roth is no
virtuoso oon vocals. And I like Sammy Hagar's lyrics, but not as much as
Peart's. So, he has his opinion, that's fine. But VH and Rush are producing
two different styles of music. Rush is more progressive. I wonder what album
this guy heard from Rush. And as far as Geddy sounding like a girl, ... well
the first time I heard Rush I knew he was a guy, and I thought his voice was
cool. And the first album I ever heard was Presto. so there. And if this guy
has heard Test for Echo yet, he will realize that NP has calmed down in his
drumming, much to my disappointment. I love his crazy drumming.

One final point befoere I go. If he hates Rush because of flashy playing,
what would he say about the middle section of Metropolis? :)

    Also, Skadz said :

I dunno if this applies to *my* list too, but I'd better be safe
    than sorry, I guess ;-)

Anyway, Scott and all other (?) MFP-list haters will be happy to
know that I *won't* be posting it to the Ytsejam anymore...

Instead, I'm going to put it up on my homepage... in it's entirety !!!
Not just the ones 'at the top', but *everyone* who has posted the
    month before !!!

Because of the fact that it's automated, there won't be names/nicks on
that list... You didn't think I counted those post by hand did ya ? ;-)
It just has the e-mail addresses of all the posters, for now...
Before, I just put the real names and nicks in that list *by hand*...
Of course I'm not going to do that with a list of 250-300 Jammers :-)
The cool thing about my MFP-page is that you can mail any Jammer (who is
on it) from there :-) All the addresses are there as 'mailto:' links !

Right now, the HTML-code for my MFP-page is generated automatically,
by my program... If you guys want to see your real name, (irc)nick or
*whatever* up on that list, just put it at the very beginning of any
line in your post with a ^ in front of it... But try to keep it short.
Once a month will be enough for me to get your name on the list...
    I'll see what I can do about writing the code for it :-}
So, mention the name you want published, like this :

    ^Mark 'Itchy' Bredius

Ps. I *know* some people will try and fuck things up. Time will tell :-)

I found Neil Peart's "Test For Echo Guidebook" on the www a few weeks
ago (http://www.syrinx.umd.edu/ I think) and judging from what I read
in it, Neil wrote all the lyrics (as usual). Here's part of the
    guidebook :

    > All of those activities kept us off the streets and out of trouble
    > until October of '95, when we assembled at Chalet Studio, a country
    > retreat just outside Toronto. From my little writing-room at one end
    > of the house, I looked out over the fields and autumn-tinged treetops

    > computers screen, I began sending a stream of lyrics to the small
    > studio at the other end of the house, where Geddy and Alex hunched
    > over guitars and computers.

I just put the "Guidebook" up on my homepage, so if anyone's
interested in reading it, jump in the Cyber Sea and swim to :

                  http://www.globalxs.nl/home/b/bredius/

Dunno about you guys though, but I think "Test For Echo" has some of
the worst lyrics Neil has written in a long time ! "Half The World"
is VERY repetitive. Half of it is just "Half the [noun] [verb]"...
Then there's "Virtuality"... I love the music, but the lyrics... Gheez !

However, it's still the best album I've bought this year... Except for
Tori Amos' "Boys For Pele" and Marillion's "Made Again" of course :-)
    (Get those !!!)

Obviously, most of the Jammers loves Rush :-) This is definately an
off-topic thread... Yet, no one seems to mind it a bit ! :-)
I've been on "The National Midnight Star" for a couple of months,
earlier this year... Unsubbed 'cause it turned to crap (imo)...
Can't we just turn *this* into the Rush mailinglist and use "Voices"
as the official DT mailinglist, from now on ? :-) That would RULE !

We could all come up with some resolutions that could help keep "Voices"
    a cool, spam- & flame-free place ! Who's with me ??? Just kidding ;-)

Mark, who puts his message in a modem and throws it in the Cyber Sea !!!

Coming from a Yes fanatic, buy Close to the Edge. It is called the Definitive
Yes album. You may also want to pick up The Yes Album. Different keyboardist
on that one, not as flashy on the keys, but still solid songwriting. After
that, if you don't have Fragile, pick that up too. It has my favorite track
from yes, Heart of the Sunrise. In fact buy that and Close to the Edge before
you buy anything else, then buy the Yes album. Hmmmm. After that, the choice
isn't that obvious. I would recommend Relayer, but that one is very unpopular
among some Yes fans. Steer clear of Tales from Topographic Oceans for now. It
is a double CD with four songs on it. I have owned the CD for several months
and still can't digest it all. There's a lot to it and you may find yourself
overwhelmed. The first two Yes albums, Yes and Time and a Word to me are all
right but now the first things I'd buy. Going for the One and Tormato are
decent but again not my favorite. After this, you have the 80s Yes, which
isn't very progressive at all, but still somewhat good, especially Union
which has more progressive tracks than the other albums. Talk, their last
release has only two or three worthy tracks. Big Generator and 90125, the
first two 80s Yes releases are good, but if you wante dthat buy 90125 first.
What did I miss? Drama. A good Yes album, but not with the original singer.
I'd recommend it though. live albums? Go with Yes songs first. If you want an
all-encompassing disc, buy either YesStory or if you really want to go
overboard, YesYears, the four disc box set. The other compilation albums
suffer from a lack of tracks, you don't get enough in my opinion. I hope this
helps. Any more questions, email me at s0067977@hawkmail.monmouth.edu.

I will admit to being a Pearl Jam fan, but only up through Vitalogy. To me
anything after Vitalogy got old and their last single I heard on the radio
just plain sucks. I don't know what they're trying to do, it just sounds so
monotonal, and Eddy Vedder just sounds like he doesn't want to be there
anymore. No energy, in my mind. You may interpret this differently, and
that's fine. And what's up with the Lion King sounding rhythm?

As someone who likes both albums, I think I would have to say
that Promised Land is a more consistent album. It's not neccesarily
better, but I think it is more effective as a unified whole. Also,
Promised Land contains some of the band's best songwriting. While I don't
really like "Disconnected," the last three songs of the album are not
only among their best, but they are some of the best anyone's released in
years (in my opinion). It is true that Dream Theater's recorded
performances are superior to Queensryche's, but Queensryche is comprised
of very good instrumentalists, also. (If instrumental ability was all
that counted, there would be no reason to like the Beatles.)
With that said, you shouldn't take any of that Mindcrime
individual's comments too seriously. Most of you probably know how good
    Dream
Theater's songs are. However, just because he or she makes unsupportable
assertions about Dream Theater does not mean that Queensryche bashing is
    necessary.
Something's not right; at this rate I may become one of the most
    frequent posters.

            Hey Jammers....

My life has been really hectic recently...I've been so busy with work and
other stuff that I haven't read any jam since D-man's birthday.....sept
7th......or if you wanna get freaky....the day Keith Moon bit the dust
    (right Wedge?)

Anyway....heres some stuff...Sorry bout the bandwidth:

My band is presently trying to get ourselves out of the funk we've been
    in...we've just acquired a really good singer....but lost a bassist.....SO
    IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED..READ ON:

            * You must have fairly-good chops, songwriting ability, and most
importantly an understanding of tone....singing is a plus

            * you must live on Long Island!!!!! I can't stress this enough....it's
hard enough getting together, with the schedules we keep....so I don't want
anyone from out of town....unless you plan on moving here....

            * You must be interested in music other than Dream Theater....now I'm not
talking about shit like The cure and Depress Mode or Rap.....I just would
like whoever is interested to understand that Dream Theater does Dream
Theater pretty well, in my opinion.....I don't want to try to do something
that dream theater will kick our ass in......To give you a good idea....we
have some prog in us...but not too much (we probably will be moving a
little in that direction cause our new singer sounds a little like LaBrie
and Alder)....we are more straightforward rock with a heavy nature...If
anyone wants a description (since it's kinda hard to describe yourself)
email these people....since I know they've heard it, played it, or think
    they've heard it....

            D-Man, Rob Barker, Syrinx, Mithrandir....

            * Gear and a car....we practice at a rehearsal studio....so you have to be
able to get there...and you're gonna need at least a bass....

            * Willingness to jump into the administration...I have been involved in
the administrative aspect of this band for way too long...(doing the
mailing list, organizing gigs and rehearsals...advertisement) and I need to
pawn off some responsibilities on other people....and I would PREFER that
they stay within the band, since there is no money involved....and the
people that are or are willing to do this for free without the return of
actually being in the band will not serve well....

            * Willingness to take part as a band member....this band is an even
split...and work gets done by everybody, although that wasn't the case in
    the past....It is now...

    Way to go Rick.
More cheers than can ever be clapped by a single man to Rick. I hope
you have given les Mindcrimer the key to finally open his narrow
    mind.

hehe yeah. the 2nd time i saw DT, the infamous lightning storm show at Peir
6 in Balmer, James would run off stage and then run back and forth in front
of Mike but behind the other guys :) awesome show, btw...

and why is it every DT show i goto always turns infamous?
1st: Nov 92 Bayou, DC - snow/ice storm kept most folx away. musta been about
    50 ppl there, tops.
2nd: summer 93 Pier 6, Balmer MD - lightning/thunderstorm knocks out part of
the sound and light systems but DT says "fuck you!" to the venue and plays
    anyway :)
3rd: Birch Hill, Old Bridge NJ - nuff said ;)

    >originally thought. Is the bass he plays in the video his Tung? And does
    >anyone know anything about this brand of bass? I like what I hear of the

i haven't watched LiT in a while -shame on me. but i'm pretty sure Mr. Myung
was still using Tobias. as far as i know, he switched sometime between I&W
touring and Awake recording, maybe cuz Tobias was sold to Gibson? dunno.

Veneman's, a local music shop, used to sell Tung and i got to play one.
quite nice; excellent woods (huh huh), Bartiloni electronics. unfortunately,
i know (0) info about the manufacturer. i've looked on the web and could
find nuttin. so, somone find something out, damnit.

this thread needs to stop here. last time, it cropped up in newsgroups and
made its way to the Jam.

DT and QR are (2) different bands. DT is more techinical oriented, QR is
more song oriented. neither would be where they are if they weren't good.

    and it's all opinion.
