The CD presentation of Lemur Voice's Insights yesterday was awesome!!! What
a great band! They played most of the songs of Insights and three new songs.
On one of the new songs the bassist played on a 16 string bass!!!! Freakin'
out!
I finally had the oppertunity to buy the CD (everywhere else it was sold
out). Good for me, because my advance tape was almost worn out. Marcel was
playing great. The drummer wasn't bad either ;)
If you like songs like Metropolis, LtL, the Mirror, and Erotomania (and who
doesn't) you will (almost certainly) like Lemur Voice. Only don't expect
another James LaBrie ;)

Hey, I have to totally agree with Neil Gallop on this one.
There is no reason for us to be ripping on eachothers bands, when we all
like them anyhow. I mean, this is crazy!! I like Queensryche just as
much as most other bands (except DT), and there is no reason why I would
want to rip on their music. It's just that I haven't been able to get
accustomed to the vocals on Mindcrime. True, it has a great story line,
but I just prefer the music to lyrics, thus I like Empire and PL better.

Dear jammers,
Hey there! Here's an update for the YtseCon III! First of all, it will
take place at the La Guardia Marriot (Queens, NY), on Saturday, October
12th from 1pm to 5pm. We have spoken to Dream Theater and management, and
they say that there is a good chance that they will be there.
The cost for pre-paid tickets is $20 per person. The cost at the door
will be $25 per person. This will cover the cost of the conference room
and other miscellaneous stuff (name tags, programs, etc.). If you would
like to pay in advance, please send a check to:
YtseCon III
c/o Jeff Chew
350 Broadway, Suite 703
New York, NY 10013
When you send a check, please include a note or letter that says your
name, return address, e-mail address, and phone number. This makes things
a lot easier for us when we send the tickets back to you, plus if we ever
need to get in contact with you.
Since the Con is coming up pretty close already, and we haven't had the
chance to get our acts together to mail out the tickets/name tags, we've
decided to distribute the name tags (they will be numbered) at the door.
So, you will have to bring a form of ID so you can pick up your ticket.
Due to the lack of reservations, we have decided to return the block of 75
rooms to the Marriot. So, we have arranged it so that you can contact the
Marriot through their 800 number. If you need a room, call the La Guardia
Marriot at 1-800-882-1043. *REMEMBER TO TELL THEM THAT YOU ARE GOING TO
THE "DREAM THEATER CONVENTION"*. The deadline to reserve a room is
October 4th. If you need to find someone to split a room with, the staff
is still doing that (well, Greg is), so you can contact him at
grc8@columbia.edu.
If you plan on flying to the YtseCon III, we have arranged something with
Rich Worldwide Travel so you can reserve airline tickets through them by
calling their 800 number. Please call 1-800-431-1130, and tell them that
you are going to the 'Dream Theater Convention'.
If you can provide a ride to the YtseCon III, or if you are in need of a
ride, please contact me by either e-mailing me or calling me and I will
see what I can do.
Syrinx gave me the idea of writing up a list of paid tickets. If you sent
out a check to me and you're not on the list, let me know! IT could be
either lost in the mail or it didn't get to me yet. Well, here goes:
1N - One night reserved at the Marriot (these are only the ones that were
sent to me rather than directly to the Marriot)
2N - Two nights reserved at the MArriot
R - Providing rides
L - Providing a place to stay
Paid:
001 Ryan T. Rafaloff 002 Ryan T. Rafaloff 003 David Neff
004 Sean Haider 005 Sean Haider 006 Brian Anderson + 1N
007 Brian Anderson 008 Brian Anderson 009 Pat Gravino
010 Mike Ostrich + 1N 011 Mike Ostrich 012 Dave Pack
013 Brian Levy 014 Jason Breitweg 015 Mike Bahr + 1N
016 Josh Sager 017 Josh Sager 018 Josh Sager
019 Josh Sager 020 Jeff Chew 021 Greg Chew
022 Michael Pomerleau 023 Michael Pomerleau 024 Matthew Erwich
025 Paul Cashman 026 Brian Kirk 027 Brian Kirk
Okay, that's it so far. It's not looking very good so far, and I really
need the money to put the deposit on the conference room, so I'd prefer if
you guys sent me the money ahead of time rather than paying more at the
door. That's it for now. If there are any mistakes, e-mail me! I'll
talk to you soon!
Yours,
Jeff =)

PBS showed the Christmas episode or Mr. Bean last night. There was a
scene where he got his head stuck up a turkey's butt (well, he was
trying to stuff it - yeah, it was a dead bird - I won't go into details
right now, though). Sort of reminded me of this more than marginally
sick thread. Seems he suffered from a rare strain of this disease.
BTW, Brian, I like some of Pearl Jam's stuff, too (especially the stuff
off Ten). I wouldn't call myself a PJ fan, but I do like some fo their
stuff. Just pulling your chain.
Also, the Jars of Clay album wasn't completely produced by Adrian
Bellew. Flood and Liquid were, and I believe the rest was produced by
the band themselves (not totally sure on that, though). I do know that
the two aforementioned songs were produced by AB, though. AB also
played violin and some other instruments on the album, too. Whereas I
do like Flood, it probably is my least fave song on the album (partly
due to radio overplay). I like Liquid a lot (for those keen Gregorian
Chants). Got to see them twice (once before they were signed, once this
summer at Cornerstone fest). Good band, but not prog, metal, or
anything close to DT's style.
>Dale (or is that Monty?) Newberry:
It's Dale. I'll try and change the name thing so people don't get us
confused anymore.
Saviour Machine is also really good if you dig really deep lyrics that
make you think a lot. Both studio albums and the live album (Live in
Deutschland) are the kind of albums you really have to listen to
straight through to fully appreciate. Especially with SMII, it's like
an opera.
AHHHHHH!!!!! That friggin' delayed mail message got an EOJ!!!! Man,
life sucks sometimes. Oh well. Later all.

One of the things to do, I'd say, is just to listen. A lot. I'm guessing
you already have, but I'll fire a couple of names at you to listen to -- Joe
Pass, Wes Montgomery, Ron Eschette, George Benson, George Van Eps, Pat
Metheny. And some horn players -- Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Charlie
Parker, Fletcher Henderson, Ornette Coleman. Make sure you're reading's
so-so, at least (it probably doesn't have to be great). A couple of
magazines and a Mel Bay book may not be so bad. A good thing to do would be
to pick of a fake book (I'd suggest "The Real Book"....everyone seems to
have that one) and see if you can get through some standards -- "All The
Things You Are," "Stella By Starlight," Satin Doll," that kind of thing. If
you can do that and get a few of those down, you oughta be okay. Beyond
Step 1, at least.

I've STILL only heard "Test For Echo" ONCE on KSJO. That's it for the new
album. Heard it about 20 times in a weekend on KLOS down in LA (plus
hearing "Virtuality" once). Sacramento DOES have some good radio,
though....or did back when I was in Davis.

I'd say I agree with most of the above sentiment. Queensryche can play.
Dream Theater can play. AND both of the band's write well. I don't wanna
begrudge anyone their right to assail the virtues of another band, but I
don't see much to choose between the two. They're both among my favorites.
On the other hand, for all the talk about soulless shredders, you'd think
they're all over the damn place. A list of people lumped in there at one
time or another that I don't agree with -- Yngwie Malmstein, Steve Vai, Joe
Satriani, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Eric Johnson, Greg Howe, and, yes,
our beloved John Petrucci. ALL of those guys write good music. They aren't
just technicians. I sure don't think of their music as soulless.

Well, I've got that album...Tyson was a student of Satriani's, which I
suppose you know, but I don't think any of the other guys have any other
material that's actually been available. If so, it's on an even smaller
scale than the T-Ride record, which I'd highly recommend to anyone, should
they run into it in a discount/cutout bin.

Wow! I never thought a discussion group like this, with so many musicians
themselves, would start bashing and praising bands on talent as a criterium.
Why doesn't Scott Rockenfield play like Mike Portnoy? Because he doesn't
play like Mike Portnoy. Why doesn't Mike Portnoy play like Neil Peart,
because he doesn't play like Neil Peart. Who's better? Who cares?
You people that are trying to rank these fine percussionists on their
"talent" forget one important thing: they're playing for them, not you.
Music is such a complicated subject, but when it's said and done, what's
important is the musician's fulfillment from playing. Anything you take
from it as a bystander is incidental and inconsequential to the music
itself. For me, it means remembering specific times in my life, and on a
good day, being able to participate in the music by playing along on my
drums, or tapping my foot while reading a magazine.
If you don't care for something, great. Move on to something you do
like, because there's so much out there, you'll never have time to find
and listen to all the music out there that you would enjoy.

Hello, again!!
This weekend I picked up 2 new CDS! I got both at Tower Records in
Tempe.
SHADOW GALLERY - Carved in Stone
OK, I picked this one up on a dare because I've heard for a year now that
these guys are great. Since I'd never heard they're stuff before, I
dodn't quite know what to expect...and SURVEY SAYS...
Well, I've only listened to it once, and I like it a lot! Its got a cool
rythm throughout the whole, and I like how they merge the songs together
with intermissions! GHOST SHIP!! Yess...yet another 20+ minute song!!!
I'll put that up there with 2112, ACOS, and IGOD!
Do these guys have any older material, any live stuff out there? Anyone
got any information above and beyond whats in the liner notes? Sounds
like they went thru a lot during recording...whats the story?
The other CD I got is my sister's band, PET!
For those out there who picked up the "Crow - City of Angels" soundtrack,
you'll recognize the name from track 14 -Lil'Boots-. This song just kicks!!!
Can't say enough about it!!
Anyway, I know there's a whole bunch of TORI AMOS fans out there. PET is
the first band signed under Tori's Igloo Records CO. She's the executive
producer of PET's new CD, which came out last Tuesday.
Anyway, its not high on technical skill, but the songwriting is awesome
and powerful...the sound is unique, and they're just phenomenal live!!!
Since I gotta do this plug...PICK UP THIS CD!!
If you liked the stuff on the Crow, you'll like the rest...
Nuff said....

I also won a T-Ride T-shirt from the local radio station here....Still
have it...Everytime I wear it, I feel like I'm playing 20 questions:
Who the hell is T-Ride? What kind of music do they play, etc....
Well, gotta run.....till next time

I think "another" is I. Since I'm being dumped on (again), let
me explain what I meant.
You can compare any two things you want. It might not me useful
or worth the effort, but you can do it (actually, that might be more
of a contrast). The two different directions you speak of imply
contrast. And since they have some similarities (they are both albums by
great bands released in the same year are just a few), comparing and
contrasting them is not difficult.
In my post I was attempting to defend both bands among the
squabbling that was occuring over Mindless's (oops, Mindcrime)
assertion. I don't understand what could be wrong with that.
Since I'm sure this list is tired of my posts by now, I suggest
this be taken to private e-mail (your welcome, Skadz).

I hate to contribute to this thread, but I think that Promised Land is better
than some of their older stuff (Rage, Warning, never heard the first disk).
But you really can't compare the two. End of story. I love both bands, so the

Hey!
I just bumped into my first unknown jammers this weekend. I (of
course) forget their names, but there was a girl wearing a green
Ytsejam sweatshirt and her ( I assume ) boyfriend, whom I know is a
jammer from our short conversation. I know I scared the girl because
I saw the shirt out of the corner of my eye and I spun around and
started staring at it in a very obvious manner before asking her
"...DT fan?" Whoever it was doesn't post much anymore or at least
doesn't read much anymore because the jam has gotten so filled with
crap lately. It was wild to meet someone in person who's on the jam that
you've never met before.
I got the new Steve Vai today (Yes, pre release. I'm just lucky,
that's all) and I can tell you, if you like Passion and Warfare and
you like Satriani a la Surfing with the Alien, you will DIE when you
hear this album. I am TOTALLY pleased with it. That's rare for me.
The last two albums I've bought (Altura and Vai) are both wonderful.
I hope to be able to add Lemur Voice and Superior to that list REAL
soon.
To you people wasting your time arguing about who is better: QR
or DT, I have one thing to say: The White Sox uniforms are cooler
than the Indians uniforms.
See how that little argument means next to nothing to you?
It's all opinion. Petrucci and the gang are far more technically
advanced than Fates Warning, and yet Fates was my favorite band
before I had even heard of DT (Although DT is SOOOOO good it hurts!)
Technical ability means nothing in the long run. It's about what you
like better and what I like better, and your opinion in that matter
means nothing to me. And mine shouldn't mean anything to you.
To those of you talking about Metallica (Alternicca), Lars,
Pearl Jam, and all that crap on this PROGRESSIVE MUSIC MAILING LIST,
I have one thing to say: Cars with fiberglass bodies aren't likely
to get rust holes.
Does that make sense to say on the jam? No.
To Damon in particular, I wanted to ask a question about
posting... hey wait a minute... an idea that makes SENSE! How about
I mail him personally, and not make EVERYONE ON THE LIST have to read
a conversation that doesn't involve them in the least? Sure, it may
get witty and interesting, and the jam won't see how cool I am, but
hey... I'm not that cool anyways, and I can save EVERYONE time by not
posting my unimportant conversation to the jam. I wonder if my
radical new way of thinking will catch on... NAH... no way.
Take care, everyone. I love you too.
