Yeah, I've seen sticks before (you know, those keen 12-string instruments Marcel mentioned last jam). Nick Beggs played one with the neo-celtic/progressive-type band Iona, and Chris something (can't remember his last name at the moment) also played one on occasion with the heavy industrial band Circle of Dust (he uses one in the video for "Telltale Crime" - that's where I first saw one used and wondered what the heck it was). I have heard that they are rather difficult to play, and only a small number of people can really play them. And they do look pretty cool, too.

There are many times when I listen to groups like Kansas, Rush, and Yes where I hear bits where I am like "this sounds a little like DT". Rush's La Villa St. (sp) sounds a lot like something DT would do. My fiance's older sister thought DT sounds like Kansas. So there really are a lot of bands that have influenced DT and it is very noticeable, unlike Tori Amos who's major influence was Jimmy Paige and Zeppelin...
On a side note: If anyone wants tickets to the Oct 6 soldout KISS concert in DC, I have 4 that I need to sell at cost. $40.50 a ticket if anyone is interested email me.

I know DT has a diverse fan base.... from all parts of the world...of all races...both sexes.......wide age range....etc. I never knew how large the age range was until I searched the fan network. I did a search in the central time zone to see if there were any DT fans in my area. Now comes the shock. A gentlemen by the name of Douglas H. Porter was listed in Mobile, AL. Mr. Porter (I say Mr. out of respect for my elders) age......192 years old!!!! Check it out!!!! hehehehe!!!!!!

Well, being desperate to get my hands on a copy of Lie (just to get TLF, of course) I tried Apocalypse Music's site on the net. No dice. The only DT stuff they have are the Live at the Marquee discs (both german and Japanese). Bummer. But on a higher note, I did order Lemur Voice from a music store down the street. A big city like Boston, and not a copy to be found anywhere. *sigh* 24 hours til I get my mitts on a copy of Shadow Gallery!! WOO HOO!!!

Neil, I must dispute this.
firstly, I will agree on the first two album ratings. Although Time and a Word deserves a 2. I bought them last, but they still have good points. The Yes album was your starting point, yet you only give it a 3. I would give it at least a 4 if not a 5. I aggree with Fragile, but maybe a 5 is in order there. Close to the Edge is fine, but Tales? That album is overload. granted, it's great prog rock music, but it's still overload. Four songs ranging in at 20 minutes each? And it's very complex both lyrically and musically. I'd give that a 3. Going for the one you slag, but you overlook Awaken, which is a classic piece in its own rite. And Relayer? Definitely a 3 as well. Patrick Moraz is different from Wakeman, yes, but the music is still great. I sometimes wish he could've stayed with Yes longer. Tormato is not as good as going for the one, which I would've given a 2, but it doesn't deserve a 1 And you totally overlook Drama, which I give a 4. I know you stopped buying Yes, but I would give this album a listen anyway. yes, it doesn't have John Anderson on vocals or Wakeman on keys, but there is great prog rock here, such as Machine Messiah, and Tempus Fuget, among others. Yes, you can say 90125 onward is bad, but 90125 in itself is a great album, imho. Not as progressive, but the key tracks are Changes, Our Song, Cinema, and Hearts. Of course that is the album that produced Owner of a lonely Heart, Yes's big hit. Big Generator is good, but not as good, and Union is good, but overproduced, and talk is all right. You also forgot to mention YesShows. and ABWH. Not first buys, though. i still stand by The Yes Album, Fragile and Close to the Edge as firsts for Yes, and 90125 as well. If you want an all-encompassing view of Yes, try YesStory or YesYears box set if you have the cash. The box set is expensive but much better because you get a good summary of the band. Neil, everyone has his opinions, but remember that the question was for a good starting point to get into yes. Fragile Close to the Edge, 90125 and the Yes album are the albums to buy if you can't afford the compilations.

I may agree with the guittar sounding relatively the same sonically through DT's albums, and maybe the bass sounding the same, if low on the albums, I must take an argument with the drums and keyboard reference to sounding the same. On WDADU, the drums sounded ... well ... bad, due to poor production. Even the bass sound on WDADU was overcompressed, which sounded cool in some ways, but bad in others. On IW, we don't know what the drums sound like minus the toms because of the triggers. Awake sounds good drumwise, and ACOS has the can of a snare, whcih I like and the drums don't echo like they do on Awwake.
You can never ever say that keyboards sound the same. There are so many different sounds, and when Derek joined up, he used different keyboards and different sounds. Kevin never used the same sound throught a song. He may have used some of the same sounds throughout an album, but it never got old, at least with me. Even JP whips out an acousitic now and then. What do you want him to do? Use a pedal steel like Steve Howe? Mess with different effects? How can DT experiment and sound different and better?

Syrinx, many many people will disagree strongly with you, even going so far as to say tat Drama isn't a Yes album. I mentioned it, so don't be pissed with me. I don't think it's a good starting point, though. I love the album, but it's not Yes as most people see it.

I can disprove the Yes theroy:
Steve Howe _OWNS_ the Yes logo. Chris Squire _OWNS_ the Yes name. Keeping that in mind, Drama is very much a YES album. I'd go so far it's in the top 3 that YES has ever done.

Well, I finally got my account at Webster U. and finally re-subscribed to the Jam. I missed out on alot, but I had a friend keep me updated. Even though I was temporarily off the list, I never stopped listening to DT.
Last night I logged on Skadz's page and it was playing Ytsejam. I right clicked on it and downloaded the MIDI file. Then I went into Encore and converted the sequence to measures. I then printed out the "74" pages. It took about a half hour even w/ Laser Printer. I would like to take my hat off to the person who put that sequence together. That must have took hours. The keyboard and drums esp. Well, it's great to be back.

Just curious about other jammers interests...
Anybody out there besides me like the album by the group GTR (circa mid 80's)? The two big songs from it (for those who may not know) were 'When the Heart Rules the Mind' and 'The Hunter'. My favorite tracks are 'Sketches in the Sun' and 'Tow the Line'.
I would highly recommend it to anyone!
I'm trying to think of who was in GTR - I'm in CA and my CD is in Georgia - Steve Howe and Steve Hackett were 2 members of the band. I can't think of who else.
Just curious if anyone else has heard it and if so their thoughts.

I'll second that. I don't own the album, but you can get their CD in BMG or Columbia House (I think). Overall, the JOC are pretty good. They don't have a drummer and some songs have a repetitive drum beat. But musically there is a little bit of cello, some piano, and a lot of good acoustic rhythms. If you are expecting DT musically, forget it. I describe them as a water-down, stripped down, version of echolyn. Some of the music is minally progressive, but they rely more on pop melodies. They are christians, but don't fret, no preachy lyrics.
They are gaining respect from many people like Sting, Adrian Belew, and King Crimson. Now, what do those bands have in common? hum!?

You should of seen them in concert at ProgDay '96! Alberto Piras (vocalist) is a clown on stage. He makes fun of being pretentious. I thought his facial expressions were hilarious...he sings in Latin and reads off a lyrics sheet. His vocal gymnastics are amazing...he does grunts, sings high and maintains control, sings passionately, and has great diction. At one point, the guitarist got on Piras sholders and played! I highly recommend the live album _Diacronie Metronomiche_ as starters. This is only for people who are looking for an adventurous listen. The music is very complex, and there are lots of time changes.
And if you are looking for a contemporary band in the vein of KC, check out Anekdoten _Vemod_. Crisp production and heavy riffs.
Walter. PS. I had a great time at ProgDay '96 and I wish more people knew about it. It wasn't publicized that well, but there were many bands from different countries and different styles. It was held at a farm in Chapel Hill, NC and it was kind of like a clean-version of Woodstock. Last year, Peter Renfro tried contacting DT to play, and I never asked him how it went, but I ask Peter if he could get them in next year. Just wanted to let you know that there are other great bands out there other than DT. You just have to do some careful reading and searching because there are thousands bands out there that you may like. rec.music.progressive is good place to start.

Hmmm. I guess I must be a lot wierder than I thought. Am I the only one that doesn't really give a hoot about lyrics? I buy CD's because there are musicians on them. Not because there are authors on them. Like I've said before, only the greatest music can express emotion withOUT words (not necissarily without vocals). An interesting idea for a band/group...in Las Vegas, there's a show called "Mystere". It's the Cirque de Soleil people. In the show, they have a lot of music, and singers...but no words. They're just singing gibberish syllables. Now, since there were wierd clowns and assorted strange things prancing around on stage (really cool show), I wasn't paying much attention to the music, if it was amazingly good or anything, but it did complement the performance very well. Anywho (yes, there is a point), does anyone know if there are any bands/groups that use this idea at all, either all the time or just for a few songs.
>Some of you know that I have a friend named Debbie that listens >to country music. I hate it, but what can I do. Country music got >to her before I could save her.
I don't see how we have the right to bash country fans..country is definately not MTV mainstream, but there are a helluva lot more country fans than prog fans. Also, I kinda like it. :)
