I don't think you can generalize this. First of all, IMO, a lot of people
don't really care about music (not meant in a negative way however, it's the
same as me not caring about football). They have the radio playing while
working, playing cards, anything really... Or they go to parties, or are
exposed to music in the supermarket. Anyway, they are PASSIVELY exposed to
music. (I do know I've made some huge generalisations here, but it's just to
make my point clear) That kind of people is the audience that more
"commercial" music reaches (hate the word "commercial" though). These people
will say that they like what's on the radio, they know the tunes they hear
because they are played over and over again. They don't choose the music
they like, their music is chosen for them, just because they don't really
care. (generalizing again, sorry) .Now, in my opinion, if normal, mainstream
radiostations would start to concentrate on another style of music, say,
progressive metal for instance, it will soon be accepted by the masses. Of
course it would not influence people who care about music, listeners who are
ACTIVELY listening to music, searching for new interesting stuff, or perhaps
playing an instrument. Just compare it to what rock and roll went through in
the fifties. In the beginning, it was considered rebbelious, provocative and
sometimes even shocking by the masses. If it hadn't been accepted then ,
where would popular music be now ? To conclude I'd say that taste of music
can certainly be influenced. Music heard on mainstream radio-stations will
be the taste of music of a big part of the audience, and not vice-versa.
Sorry if this message comes through twice, but I think something went wrong
with my first posting.

More paranoia for everyone... the investigation is underway.
I can pretty easily pin this on any former Italian CD company, but
I would need hard info to give them. Does anyone know all the goods on
Kiss the Stone, Metal Crash, or so on and so forth? Any help I could be
given in e-mail is most appreciated.
The status at this point is that they think I'm just a poor,
humble bassist, who took on projects he didn't understand in order to make
a few bucks.
I have friends prepared to finish out all orders if I am
unfortunate enough to leave the net.
METALLICA: THE WRATH OF GOD IS ALSO NOW SOLD OUT. At 100 copies, I
will go to press immediately on them and it will be yet another
way-the-hell-rare CD as a result. So far, this stuff shouldn't affect
Dream Theater discs at all. I'm also likely to be in the clear on Cowboys,
Echolyn, Fates, and similar low-key material. Brian Cox was very right...
some risks simply aren't worth taking.
If you see obsequious posts from people who you've never heard of,
on the newsgroups, asking about me or what I do, you all know it's time to
play dumb. :)

(inside joke)
anyways...... just some quick thoughts on cds and other stuff.
~Altura - "Mercy"~
i picked this up after hearing a bit about it here. i like it. as
someone said, they do sound like they're inspired by DT. and that,
IMO, is the only negative (not really all that negative actually)
thing i can say about it. there's times in their songs where they
get the syncopated/groove/instrumental breaks ala Metropolis,
whatever. sometimes they sound a tad out of place, almost like
these guys simply wrote them in there to show their DT influence.
but don't get me wrong, it's not bad. the band, as a whole, is
impressive. they use a bit more keys then DT. they're a bit mellower
then DT, yet still have the balls and chunk that someone famous once
talked about.... i think this is a hell of a good album for (what i
believe anyway) a debut album from a young band. definitely worth the buy.
~Test For Echo~
after hearing mixed reviews of this disc, i finally decided to pick
it up for myself. to be perfectly honest, i don't love it, yet i
don't vomit while listening to it. i kinda get the "hmm, this isn't
bad, yet... i dunno, this isn't exceptional either" feeling while
listening to it. my only gripe at this point (i've only listened to
it twice) is that the songs tend to be too similar... like there's
not enough musical variety on the disc... but hey, that's just me.
and dammit, where the hell are the keys?!?!?!?!? :-) i think it may
wear on me.
i also wanted to add my thoughts on some recent happenings around
here without mentioning any names... i realize that there are some
people who have to reply to messages individually due to restrictions
for whatever reasons, that's cool. but i _know_ that's not the case
for everyone. for whatever reason, some people seem to think that
they need to respond to *every* single thing that is said here.
sometimes we'll even see a digest in which half of the posts are from the
same person. well, it's painfully obvious that this is IMO, but hey-
i simply don't think that is necessary, and i think it's a tad
self-indulgent. alot of times a response to a post may just be that-
a response, often times not offering anything informative to the jam
whatsoever. i think it would be nice if we could all think before we
post, remind ourselves that we're *not* the only person on the list,
and save everyone else from having to skip through messages often
times relating to topics that (IMO) should've even be on the jam.
and if ya DO want to respond to alot of messages within a single jam,
for christ's sake *please* consolidate them into a single message.
this isn't a competition to see who can post the most, or at least it
shouldn't be.
anyway, sorry if i pissed anyone off. well actually, i don't care if
i pissed anyone off. i'm just expressing my opinions and if you
disagree with me, feel free to respond to the address below.

Jeff decreed the following in Ytsejam #1832:
>Did anyone out there besides me not really like Awake when they first
>heard it? (Please don't flame me for that!)
No, you're not alone in that. When we brought "Awake" home, we were so
excited...then "6:00" came on and my response was something like, "YUCK!"
I didn't know which I disliked more, the raggedness of James' voice or
the new edge to the music. But I stuck with it, and, after, three or so
listens, it began to grow on me. Since then, I've spoken with people in
other forums and found that the initial dislike is not really that
unusual. What's sad, though, is that some people never listen quite long
enough to get into it.
>Another question: Does Space-Dye Vest sound better on a cold, gray day
>or is it me? It just fits the mood so well.
Normally, my opinion of music is pretty based on the music itself, and
not what I know about the creator. Since the whole Jen/Susan/Kev thing,
I've been especially critical of Kevin's lyrics. Keith said it makes him
think of some guy surrounded by dozens of empty beer cans and pizza boxes
and in yesterday's clothes... I just picture black - black clothes,
drapes pulled in a room...but also contradictions. "I don't need you
(but please come back)."

You know, I really have to ask this. Is Mike really doing a bad thing? I
mean, look at what Mike does. He provides die-hard fans with live material
and rarities from their favorite bands. Is this so wrong? Oh, wait, the band
doesn't exactly make any money, but Mike isn't living in a penthouse
somewhere and driving around in cars too expensive to spell the names of. So,
what's the crime? The bootleg thing usually puts people where they are making
money off the band and the fan by severely overcharging for their CDs. How
many times have you spent $50 on a double CD boot to bring it home and have
it sound like total shit. Mike is honest. If he can't find good source
material for boots, he will at least tell us. His prices aren't totally
unreasonable, and he isn't taking advantage of us. how many others can we say
that about? So, it's illegal because the bands don't see the money, the
record companies can't collect on it. He's doing a great service for the fan,
and I think he's got a lot of support. I wonder, if things were to go to
court, if a jury or judge would really be that hard on him. Let's hope it
never comes to that, though. Mike, I think I speak on behalf of the Jam when
I say that we all wish you continued success and we hope that the law never
rides you way.

ALL; Sorry there is no DTC content, but since there are some very wise
people on this list, maybe someone can help me. I belong on several
mailing lists, and it gets to be a pain for filing the ones that don't have
digest mode... I was told that Eudora(registered version) has a feature that
will automatically file messages in folders you create. This depends on
certain words that it looks for in the message itself... Does anyone have
Eudora registered and if so, does this work??? Another words, I would tell
it to search for the words, "ytsejam@ax.com" in the top of the
message(header) and when it found it, it would file it automatically in the
folder... The places that sell it around here don't let ya return it when
it's opened, so I thought there just HAS to be someone on here that uses
that feature or can at least tell me if it works, or if there is another one
that will work......Take care and thanx very much in advance....Dusty

If anyone wants to know, I'll probably be in Yngwie's video for

when they were filming. I was right up front pretty close to center

I liked Awake right away, but when I first heard Images and
Words, I didn't know what the hell I was listening to. I still remember
the first time I heard it. I thought I was listening to more of a
keyboard oriented band. For some reason "Another Day," "Wait for Sleep"
and the slower parts of "Surrounded" stuck with me. Afterwords,I thought
I had listened to an adult contemporary cd (like Michael Bolton). Of
course, I like the softer music much better now, and I notice the heavier
parts more. The longer songs were so complex that I didn't understand
them at first, but by the time Awake came out, I was used to Dream
Theater, and I latched onto Awake immediately.
Finally, does anybody think Neil Peart's view of internet
technology(the "World Wide Gossip Net") in "Virtuality" contradicts his
previous glowing appraisals of technology (see "Countdown")?

if not, it was still fuckin' cool to be immersed in "Love Lies Bleeding"

ok, first Raitz, to what nation does your .ee domain refer to, forgive me
for my ignorance........
second, about the topic, it's about something Ben said a couple days ago
that made a lot of sense to me.....the post about how a lot of people
don't even buy albums, and as a result all they have to go on is the radio
and/or MTV.....I can relate, because that was me, until my 1st year of
college, even into my sophomore year....
Before that, my list of favorites somewhat resemble my current list of
fave bands, but there were also other bands that might not make a top 40
list of fave bands now, and that is because what I liked, I heard (only)
on the radio....a 1990 list of fave bands included Rush, Heart, U2, Queen
Genesis and Def Leppard, out of which DL and Heart have dropped out
completely.....maybe I had enough sense to key in on the stuff *we* like,
i dunno, but I'm glad I'm here......
I'm not sure exactly what my point is anymore, but i think it lies along
the lines of don't condemn others for buying into only what the radio or
MTV sells them, because a) that's all they have and b) there are some out
there who can pick up on the goood stuff, even as rarely as it is played
and besides, the radio isn't totally hopeless: a year
or two after the release of O:M, I'd never heard of Queensryche, and only
got into them as a result of Silent Lucidity on the radio.....and the
reason I'm here is because somebody took a chance and played TTT a few
times......

p.s. In a couple of days, if I can find it, I am gonna post a really
weird post......expecting flames, but I hope some can figure out the
reason I'm gonna post it

No, but he's doing an illegal thing. Trust me, if I've learned anything in

happen to own any of Mike's discs (I don't do boots in general, there's too
much other stuff and too little cash!), but I know a lot of people on the

Hiya guys. Basically Tower Records has TfE and WM at THE SAME listening station! Isn't that great?! And WM is $15.99, whereas TfE is only $11.98. As MP says, "I fuckin' love it." Since Tower has SEVERAL copies of WM, and Tower is a pretty large store/chain, I'm doubting that WM was actually recalled. Some people have been complaining (or just commenting, whatever) that James' vocals are hard to understand and whatnot. Well, you know that Lemur Voice disc that I've been raving about? Well, I can't understand a single word by their singer. And it really doesn't bother me.
