Argh, so I made ANOTHER mistake in an address, when will I ever stop.
Thank you very much for replying to it and sorry for me leaving out
a number, and thanks for all the trouble I've caused you! :)
Ah!! Just went to Music Zone, and I was just browsing to see if they
finally had anything prog besides DT, Marillion and Rush, and shit! I
found Shadow Gallery's Carved in Stone! I couldn't believe it! and I
had no money on me! The point is I asked the guy how many more copies
they had and he said they had about 5 more and that a friend of his
showed him a Magna Carta catalog or something like it and he ordered
lots of stuff. Including Magellan, Lemur Voice (gasp!), Enchant and
Altura, couldn't believe it. One more week till those cd's get here.
So if any of you guys can recommend me one of them (besides Lemur Voice
and SG that is :)) well you're welcome to. Gotta go, wasting too much
bandwidth.....

All jammers: Just got this off of the queensryche newsgroup. Yep, the infamous mindcrimer is at it again. This time he really rips on Mike P. I know that most of us could care less, but there have been people on here complaining of the lack of Dream Theater content, and since they don't have anything new out yet, here is something to laugh, or shake your head about....Opinions Welcome....Dusty
**************************************************** from MINDCRIMER
OK, I just finished listening to Images and Words and I have a few things to say. I listened to it so I could be fresh with what the problem is.
First of all, Petrucci is a great guitarist, and if the band would look to him as a leader and let the songs be based on his own rythms, they would be better off. The keyboard player doesn't need to be sharing leads with the guy. The guitar should lead. The problem with this band is (and this is a big problem) the drummer. If you listen to 'Pull Me Under', 'Take the Time', 'Metropolis I', and 'Under a Glass Moon', you can clearly hear the overexcessive, hot dog, showboat, annoying, machine gun drumming. If you can't hear what I'm talking about, please see the ear doctor. Those four songs are completely ruined by Portnoy's selfish attitude towards demanding that he be upfront and doing all that unnecessary crap. I even feel like Petrucci was forced to follow the drums in some of his writing. I feels like the drums were written before anything else because they seem to be the most prevalent thing you hear in those songs. I can truly say that I like most of the melodies and I was doing my own drumbeat in my head and thinking what the song would sound like without the machine gun boy. I also cannot call him Peartnoy anymore because his style is nothing like Peart's. Not at all. Peart knows how to show his skills without killing the song, Portnoy doesn't. Here is a list of the songs and their problems(in my opinion of course, for you sensitive ones.)
1. Pull Me Under- Great guitar work, some of which is drownded out by the keyboards in the intro of the song. Would be very good if it wasn't for the drums during the second time Labrie sings "This world is spinning around me......" Listen to that constant pounding. Labrie and Petrucci sound great together and they really are the strengths of the band.
2. Another Day- Proof that they all sound great when Portnoy doesn't have the chance to be the hot dog. He shows restraint in the song, and the song benefits from it. Keyboards and piano are very nicely done. Guitar solo fits nicely. Probably the best song on the CD.
3. Take the Time- Another song ruined by the drummer. Good melody and lyrics. Song is sunk during each chorus where the machine gun kills off the rest of the band and dominates the song. A real shame in this one. It has tons of potential.
4. Surrounded- A tolerable song. Machine gun is not included in song, although drums are still too prevalent, doing things that annoy the hell out of the listener. Great melody and guitar once again. A pretty good song. One of the 3 best on the album.
5. Metropolis I- Over 9 minutes long, filled with solos from each member and very annoying machine gun drumming. Could have been great if kept shorter and drummer showed some restraint. Again, good melody and guitar(given).
6. Under a Glass Moon- Good lyrics, good melody, destroyed by drummer again.
7. Wait for Sleep- The most beautiful song on the album. So simple with good melody. THE DRUMMER DOES NOT EVEN PLAY.(hint) Top 3 songs on album.
8. Learning to Live- 11 minutes of long boring solos and the melody is poor. The reintroduction of the Wait for Sleep piano lead is not needed.
So there you have it. Examples given. Anyone who wants to try to disprove the fact that those four songs are destroyed by Portnoy and his showoff attitude can go ahead, but please provide some quality stuff. I don't want to hear, "Oh, you jerk" blah blah blah. What this band should do is get the drummer to tone it down bigtime or get a new drummer, period. The rest is tolerable. If you let Petrucci write the songs and work the rest of the lyrics and music around his guitar leads combined with normal drumming, you have a winner. Now, go get your CD and listen to those four tracks. I dare you to tell me that you can't hear that machine gun. This album could have been great, instead, "Rambo" messed up. The three songs that he is most restrained on, are the best 3 on the CD. So you see, less is more.

Steve Perry Joined the band in 1977...(hardly when 'they got big') and cut his teeth along with the rest of them until the release of Escape in 1981....and thats when they 'got big'!
> Tell him that it's the same > lineup as the Escape/Frontiers era of journey. But they are not the original > members.
No....they are not.....but put it this way.....if a Journey reunion happened...and they advertised a lineup of: Greg Rolie, Neal Schon, George Tinker, Prarie Prince, and Ross Valorie (which happens to be the original lineup)
The only person some people would recognize is Schon.....When they mean original....It really means the lineup that you remember them as.....

Hmmmm.....yes.....but again...If you remember John Curelowski instead of Tommy Shaw....then you are in a VERY, VERY small percentage.... plus...I thnk John is dead....

Yes, Joe DID pick sextuplets at least at 210 and maybe even faster. I can't recall exactly how fast but it was unreal. He was my private teacher for 5 whole weeks and he never ceased to amaze me with his speed. People may say what they want about his lack of feel or unoriginality but he is an awesome technician that any guitarist could learn a lesson from. Corey Bell

Guess we'll have to search out the import version...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
On other topics:
The GTR album is no longer available as a domestic, but it is available as an import
The Max Bacon CD "The Higher You Climb" has two unreleased songs from GTR (after Steve Hackett left/pushedout as well as two live tracks with him on it.
The Working Man CD is not out of print.
I got a copy of the new Rush used (which means I held to my word and didn't buy it when released). The musicianship is great, the lyrics fairly poor. On a whole, I like it better than anything since Moving Pictures, but I was really disappointed with the lyrical quality.
The new Steve Vai completes the transformation from Zappa to Satriani. Many of the songs had a very Satch-like quality to them, very melodic. Great record.
The Lemur Voice and Altura release are pretty good. The Altura is a little over produced (thank you Robert Berry) but the LV is a great sounding record. Have only been though each one, so further listens need to be completed. I special ordered mine through a local Record Town store. Since the releases are newer, it helps to have the label codes (A is MA-9014, FV is MA-9015).
Queensryche's Promised Land was a disappointment to me. I loved O:M, though Empire was a good record, but PL sounded unfinished and a little punchless at times. The Someone Else? track though is amazing. This track made it worthwhile.
Oh yeah, DTC...
Keep in mind that just because the band has 2 discs worth of music ideas, doesn't mean they have enough quality material for two discs. Case in point, before U2's Achtung baby came out, I got the boot with three discs worth of material on it. While a few songs did appear on the album, a couple as b-sides, most were never officially released. Of the ones that didn't officially make it, some were very good, some were somewhat good, and some were pretty bad. Conclusion? Quality, not quantity is the important thing.

ASU beats Nebraska!! 19-ZIP! Most exciting game I ever did go see. All you folks in Nebraska who were lovin' your #1 ranking and big old winning streak, I have this to say: IN YOUR FACE! :) Arizona State was, is now, and always will be the #1 party school in the nation!
Ok, well, then, in other news.
It looks like I'm not moving after all. Ignore all that change of address shit, I'm still at: Mike Bahr, 3175 N. Price Rd. #1066, Chandler, AZ 85224 and should be there for the foreseeable future. I can't move until my current lease lapses in April 1997, because I don't care to pay the penalty for the lease-length discount. So I'll be stuck at the ol' homestead for just a little while longer.
Things are awful quiet on the investigation prairie. I think they're listening, waiting for me to slip up. It won't happen. :)
In other news, I've begun the arduous task of manually creating the Tori discs, and I've been at it for the better part of a week. So those of you who have waited will get your goods soon enough! :)
Take it easy, all!

I was watching LiT yesterday and some wanted to know...Who is the woman talking to the singer in line? The scene went like this... ~~ Singer: James is amazing! Camera Person: He would like to hear that. S: Really? CP: Yeah. S: Could he give me lessons? ~~ It stops there. Just curious as to who that was.
Also is there something with Vai's new CD coming out. I know it came out on Sept. 17 but I couldn't find it anywhere. I found it finally about 25 miles from my home :P Is there some legal thing against it? Like with a certain tribute to a certain band? Or is it that there are a lot of Vai fans in the NYC area?
And one quick thing, I meant someone from my town who listens to DT!! What's really cool about this is, he is the band captain for my HS's rock band(the Boptones)! So, all I have to do to join the band is learn one song(hehe, I'm going to do something really simple like Silverchair :) ! But I want to know what kind amp could I get for about $400-$500 range? I play bass and I sold my amp, a crappy Peavey combo amp from the Stone Age, off in the beginning of the summer. It doesn't have to have a bunch of features.

I forget who it was at Ytsecon II who was asking where I got my leather duster (big black full-length coat) -- I do remember more tan one person asked about it, and all I could answer was "I got it mail-order from Sportsman's Guide, but it's not in their catalog any more"....
Well, it has returned to the catalog. :) I paid $149.95 for it, which is half (at most) what you might pay at a store or elsewhere. Also, they're again offering a regular leather trench coat for $129, which is a steal considering I've never seen one for less than $250-300. I've had nothing but quick service from these folks and I recommend them. Their number is 800-888-3006. (I'd get a trench at that price, but with the duster I have no need of a trench. :))
Oh, for those of you who follow my involvement with Dragon*Con here (hi, Mike Bahr :)) -- it's a large SF/fantasy/comics/gaming convention in Atlanta every summer -- it looks as if the Misfits are a lock for playing a show at the convention Saturday night. We're in touch with Scott Ian from Anthrax about them playing a show, too (both bands dropped by the con last year just to visit and chat with GWAR, and enjoyed themselves immensely). It's becoming almost a music festival as well as a SF/fantasy con. :)

Hey fellow jammerz!
I'm thinking about buying some CD's in some store in the net, and to do that I need to buy, like, 5 or 6 CD's, so the Shipping and Handling prices to Brazil don't make it better to buy them around here. :) The bands I want to buy (they're not ALL I want, but I can't buy everything at a time, right?) are the following: Fates Warning, Mercyful Fate, King Diamond, Helloween. (also, I want the last Vinnie Moore's, which I can't remeber the name) As I don't have even one album of any of these bandas, I'm accepting your opinion about which album to buy: I was thinking about, respectively: Parallels, Melissa, <don't know the name of any KD album>, The Time of the Oath (I heard Keepers 1 is better, but I listened to TTOTO in a store and it rox).
Ah, and feel free to send comments about any other cool bands (such as Stratovarius, Shadow Gallery and others I'm reading about in the jams).

been a while since i made my presence felt here........but just in case you forgot a kobayashi lurks around you all........
let's see, let's see........so much shit to talk of...
first of all, let's not get started about the new rush album..........still not sure what to think of it. could've sworn that i heard some bass drumming that almost smelled like mike portnoy in there (wow- a blasphmeous statement- porntoy the innovator?). but anyways, i'll see y'all in albany (that means you, digital wonder wedge face or whatever it is they call you- chris).
but one album i can say i really like is that new one by that weird guy, you know, neon yellow guitar, looks like ron darling of the oakland a's, 7 string guitar.........that vai guy! and even better, poor ol' devon townshit was relegated to singing "whookam" and a whole bunch of other backwards phrases, only.......whew!
"fire garden" to me has that flavor of extremist-era satch, and maybe (esp. in some of the vocal pieces, which i think vai did excellently), almost like alice in chains.....too bad i immersed myself with 27 credits this semester and won't be able to go home and see g3.
but at least i have rush. and at least tori amos is coming to my school. seems like a good time for 5th row seats....but i'm missing medeski, martin and wood (also at my school) because i'm a fucking moron.
can someone fill me in on what's up with mr. soon-to-be-married (congrats in case i missed it before) mike bahr? investigations? a scandal? was he caught with anna nicole smith this week? wassupwith that?
to bring up more relevant topics, i was wondering if anyone can fill me in on any info as to where i can obtain the following?
-queensryche, promised land-era gig -dt (my dtc for the jam, so fuck you!), w/ an original acos -dt, ronnie scott's
now, i know some or all of those requests are insane, and i'm fucked in the head, but i figured SOMEONE has to know....so if you are he or she, tell me- thanks.
i guess this is it til the next time. peace.
