OK, now I live in Vermont as you all know, so I haven't had a chance to
road test these directions. I know they're right, up to the point of
getting off the Grand Central Parkway. I got directions from the Parkway
to the Hotel over the phone, from Marriott's nationwide 800 number, from
a woman who has quite obviously never been in NYC. So, if any of you
kind souls are willing to test the directions between the GCP and the
hotel, and you can offer any insights that the kind Midwestern woman on
the phone couldn't, let me know. :)

    Here they are!

Oh, one more thing. Anyone familiar enough with mass transit to offer
any suggestions on getting there by train/bus/etc? I'm not, and we might
be able to use that info.

DIRECTIONS TO THE LA GUARDIA AIRPORT MARRIOTT HOTEL
    102-05 Ditmars Blvd.
    East Elmhurst (Queens), NY
    (718) 565-8900

    ********************

    FROM THE SOUTH:

Take the New Jersey Turnpike, Interstate 95, to Exit 10 for Route 440 and the
Outerbridge Crossing. Once over the bridge (and into New York State and New
York City), follow Route 440, the West Shore Expressway. Take the WSE to
Interstate 278, the Staten Island Expressway, towards Brooklyn and the Verrazano
Bridge. Go over the Verrazano Bridge (One-way toll $7) and continue to follow
Interstate 278, which will change names to the Gowanus Expressway and then to
the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. Take the BQE to the Grand Central Parkway
eastbound, toward La Guardia Airport and eastern Long Island. Take the 94th
Street exit off the GCP. Follow the service road straight, and you will wind up
    on Ditmars Blvd.

    FROM NEW ENGLAND:

Take Interstate 95 southbound into New York City. Take the first exit you see
for the Hutchinson River Parkway southbound towards the Whitestone Bridge.
Take the Whitestone Bridge (Interstate 678) (Toll $3.50 each way) into Queens.
Once over the bridge, follow interstate 678, the Whitestone Expressway. Take
the Whitestone Expressway to the Grand Central Parkway westbound, towards La
Guardia Airport and the Triborough Bridge. Take the Astoria Blvd. exit off the
GCP. Turn right at the first traffic light onto Ditmars Blvd.

    Alternate New England Route:

Take the Merritt Parkway instead of I-95. The Merritt becomes the Hutch once
you cross into New York State. Follow directions as above.

    FROM UPSTATE NEW YORK:

Take Interstate 87 southbound into New York City. At the end of Interstate 87,
take the Triborough Bridge (Interstate 278) (Toll $3.50 each way) into Queens.
BE CAREFUL: The Triborough goes both to Queens and to Manhattan. DO NOT go
to Manhattan. Once over the bridge, follow the Grand Central Parkway to the
94th Street exit. Take this exit. Follow the service road straight, and it
    becomes Ditmars Blvd.

FROM THE WEST AND NORTHERN NEW JERSEY:

Take Interstate 80 to the George Washington Bridge (Interstate 95) (One-way
toll $7.00). Once over the bridge, take Interstate 87, the Major Deegan
Expressway, southbound. Follow Upstate NY Directions above.

    FROM LONG ISLAND:

Take the Northern State Parkway westbound. The NSP becomes the GCP once you
cross the New York City line. Take the GCP to the Astoria Blvd. exit. Turn
right at the first traffic light onto Ditmars Blvd.

IF YOU DON'T SEE DIRECTIONS HERE THAT HELP YOU:

E-mail me at cmerlo@cs.uvm.edu, and I'll see what I can do.

HOW BAD WILL THE TRAFFIC BE?

Come on. We're talking about New York City on Columbus Day weekend. Plan
    ahead.

    Drive safely!

As much as I hate the way Sony dicked the band over, I can't help but think
that things weren't all that rosy between band members. The whole thing
started to unravel when the bass player got fed up and left. I know they
searched for a replacement for a while, but nothing really clicked. At that
point, I think that even if Sony was a really great record company, the band
was finished. Remember it says after "This Time Alone" on the new CD: "Last
song recorded together . . . the cheers at the end are there for a reason."

As another possible indication that things weren't going to work out, look
at the two projects that have come in echolyn's wake: Still (drummer,
vox/bass, guitar) is moving in a more mainstream direction (from what I've
heard), while finneus guage (keys) is going for a jazzy/fusion kind of thing
that is more like what echolyn did. That tells me that there were different
ideas about where the band was headed, and that would have broken things up,
    anyway.

Oh well, that's my take on the situation.

Apart from anything, there is *no way* that Green Day would ever be able to
pull off a DT cover. In the eyes of their fans they may be a 'good band'
in terms of writing catchy music, but this is no substitute for musical
talent. They simply would not be able to play any DT.

I finally got a hold of the Rush tribute album. I've only listened to it all the way through once, but let me tell you this thing is going to be in my player for quite a while. As I go on, remember that I'm not that big a Rush fan. As such I have only heard the original versions of 3 of the songs (Closer To The Heart, YYZ, Freewill). That being said: Overall, the disc is incredible. My favorite songs are "Analog Kid" (great performance by Jack Russell of Great White), "La Villa Strangiato" (holy shit!!! This is what an instrumental is SUPPOSED to sound like), and "Mission" (Eric Martin brought tears to my eyes, sniff, sniff). Of course, MP gets a chance to blaze through almost half the album. I've heard accusations that he overdid it, but since I haven't heard the originals, I can't give an opinion. I do know that he sounds ABSOLUTELY MOTHERFUCKIN' INCREDIBLE on every track I supposed that is the true test of how well he did. Actually, Deen Castronovoa gives MP a run for his money his songs (if MP ever quits DT, I've always thought Deen would be a suitable replacement: same attitude and energy). Of course Billy Sheehan is in top form. But the winner for best vocal performance has to go to the aforementioned Eric Martin. Unbelievable. James gets to shine on Red Barchetta (I can tell this one is going to grow on me really quick). And Sebastian Bach sounds godly, as always. I just wish he was given songs that had more of a vocal part. It's almost criminal that he reduced to "Jacob's Ladder," though he sounds amazing when he does get to chime in. Here's what I didn't like: I wasn't too found of Mark Slaughter's performance on "Anthem," though Deen more than takes up the slack. I also expecting more from Fates Warning's version of "Closer To The Heart." Not that they didn't sound good, it just seemed to lack...something. Also, I thought "Freewill" was a weak album closer and would have sounded 1,000,000 times better with James on vox. All and all, a great album. If you're not a big Rush fan, don't worry. To me, this whole album sounds more like DT than Rush, regardless of who is on what track. Get it, now. If for nothing else, get it for MP. Now here's a question: on the back of the CD booklet, it thanks all the bands that the respective musicians are a part of. But it thanks DT and Derek seperately. I was under the impression that Derek was a full member of the band. Is it possible that he's still a hired hand? Anyone got any info on this. Maybe I missed something over the summer.

Zach said thus in Ytsejam #1863:

    >Business: what is the gerneral opinion on the QR boot of the San Jose >Arena show?

If you're speaking of a "Promised Land" show, why would you pay money to a bootlegger? That kind of defeats the purpose of 'ryche allowing for a tapers' section If you're interested in getting for nearly free, I'd suggest checking trade lists. I know Brian Cox has a bunch of 'em.

    In #1865:

    >Okay, idiot alert.....can someone e-mail me the name of the QR newsgroup? I >can't find it and I'm not sure if my ISP doesn't carry it, or if I'm just >not looking in the right place.

    I believe it's rec.music.artists.queensryche

As for the Dream Theater versus Queensryche thing, I'm with the people who are thinking the debate is kind of silly. I mean, there's room enough for both in this world, at least in my music collection. ;) I think if one of them was just like the other, then it would get boring. For example, I've seen both bands live, and I loved both shows for very different reasons (Dream Theater likes to focus mainly on audio performance, aside from some light effects, whereas QR goes for the whole theatrical thing).

    Anyhoo, that's my $.02 :)

Don't worry, I'm not going to try to change your mind anymore, because I realize it's closed tight. But if you insist on posting things like this, Pat, newcomers are going to think that we, the other members of the list, think it's ok to say things suck and leave their arguments at that. Remember, we're trying to *avoid* shortsightedness, ignorance, and broad generalizations, especially when there is no argument behind them.

As for that chain email, I sent it back to a bunch of the previous recipients with a nice little note (heh). I did get two replies back, which made me realize that I should've only sent it back to the preson who sent it to us because one person told me that she has no control on what her friends send to others. She was polite, so I sent her a polite reply. Someone else replied back that the incident was two weeks old and that I "wasn't her daddy". Sheeyah! Like *I* was the one who did something wrong! I didn't reply to that. Probably some freshman. That thing was stupid anyway.

Oh man. Come on. That one's easy. has to be Under a Glass Moon. With all this talk about Yes, it was reminding me of marching band way back in high school (well, between '88 and '92 anyway - seems like a lot longer than that). I remember one year (may have been the same year, but it was at least in consecutive seasons), fo the field show in marching band, we did "Roundabout" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" (before Wayne's World revived it some). Kicked some tail. A lot of fun (but one of the more challenging shows we had. Try marching, playing (I played trombone back then (still do some)), and staying in the right form at the same time with those songs. I think I may have had a solo in "Roundabout," too, but I'm not sure.

    Hi all!

    1) Thank you all again for supporting us!

    2) It seems like it's taking effect! :) NOISE USA already seem to be thinking about the question how they should release the CD. There are 2 possible things how this could happen: a) by official release, b) by mail order companies. Naturally version a) would be better for us and for you because the CD would be sold MUCH cheaper and in a wider area. So here is my request for you: KEEP ON SENDING THEM EMAIL PLEASE! There is a good chance that they will do what we all want.
