    Hello!
I haven't read all my back Jams yet, so I don't know if this has
been answered. Did anyone ask Alex and Geddy about the Tribute when they
were on Rockline? I wonder what they had to say.
And one other thing...why are Alex and Geddy always interviewed
together, but Neil is sometimes left out? I mean, you always see "Alex &
Geddy" or "Alex, Neil, and Geddy" but never "Geddy and Neil" or "Neil and
Alex" in an interview headline. Check out the new "Guitar" magazine, it
just AL and GL. Is this just a plain moronic question?
Well, while I was at work tonight, I had Awake playing on the
tape deck. I was the only one working, and it was cranked up so loud, I
was dancing around, making subs, washing dishes, you know. The whole
"Crank DT while the boss isn't around at work" thing. Anyways, I guess I
woke up all the tennants in the apartments upstairs! Kind of
coincidental, isnt it? I AWAKENED the upstairs tennants while listening
to AWAKE! Wow! Funny place, This Island Earth!

    Frankly,
I hope that some of the songs are wimpy and un-prog-like. Why are
we pinholing our band? They have written this stuff in the past, but
they can change too y'know? I happen to like wimpy songs. I think
James' singing is at his best in songs like Wait for Sleep and the
Intro and Outro for Surrounded. James has winderful control of his
voice and I'd love to hear them write a simple(for them anyway) and expressive song
like "Seven Sundays" or "Don't Leave Me Now."

            I have a friend who thinks like that. He's a rocker (head-bangs
to Metallica and all), but he says that he thinks Dream Theater
does better with the softer stuff. His favorite song is
"Surrounded". My favorite soft DT song is SDV. Change the lyrics,
or omit them, and this is the song that I want played at my
            funeral.
    ***
OK. I'm dropping my pride and admitting my faults and asking for help in
redeaming myself. Can you guys direct me to all the DT stuff (of at least
reasonable quality) that's not Awake, IaW, or ACoS? I've only been a
dedicated phan for about a year now and need help going into depth.

Live at the Marquee is a definite, plus the Live in Tokyo
VHS tape. If you're into boot collecting, then The Dance of
Eternity is a must get: it has the _original_ version of ACOS
(I like the new one better, but the old one has its moments).
Lords of Sound is also great (has the "Puppies on Acid" intro
to Take the Time that later became the intro to The Mirror),
as is Lost in the Sky. Mind Control is an excellent boot from
the last tour that has "Another Crack in the Mirror" intro
to The Mirror, as written by Derek (I love it). And though
Grinder thinks that Tim Lodge's CDs are overpriced, I think
they are great--- I pay the same here in the Bay Area for
single-CD boots (I know, Jenniebear, I know, why am I supporting
            bootleggers? *sigh*). TafN...

How DARE you rip on the "Naked Blue Guy Motif"?!?

I just thought that would be fun to say.

Ben... is that Surrounded? The beginning piano part? Ah, well, probably
not, because the high doo's would probably be dee's, descending a major
fourth to da, down one step (to the fifth) to doo, and finally the octave
    of dee, which is duh.

As for TTT fading out, HEY! I sort of agree. I don't know why I'm
yelling though. I think it's because on LiT you can hear the long
instrumental fade out of TTT and if you pump up your stereo at the end of
TTT to stretch the fade out out (does that make sense?) you can hear a lot
of the same solos. I can't remember if you hear them on I&W, but on the
demo that's on the Silent Man single you can hear a lot of the fade out
solos. So I think they were going for the "Jam" out ending... not a lack
of ability in writing an ending to a song... and I think that's
legitamate. I prefer long songs with good solid endings, but it never
really BOTHERED me to hear a fade out. Every song ends... even Fates
Warning's new album, the 60 minute song, which I bought at Walmart today
for $7.99. (Just Kidding. I know Carlo and some of the other Fates
fanatics on the list would have a massive coronary if I left it at that!)

Take care guys. (::Looks back at his post and sees MOSTLY DT content!::)

    Whats up guys,

I just broadcast my first 2-hour progressive metal radio show as a
student DJ here at Manhattan College/College of Mount St. Vincent in
Riverdale, NY (border of Bronx/Westchester). The night before I took an
inventory of all of the different
music I listen to and was amazed to find out that I came up with 440
CD's and 115 different bands!!!! All PROGRESSIVE except for about 9 or
10! I could not believe how many great bands I couldn't fit into my
first show. I'm planning an instrumental show too so that's gonna be
    pretty sick...no alternashit in sight.
Anyway, I just thought it would be interesting to post my playlist
each week to hopefully open you guys up to some newer international
progressive metal bands and also to show that this music is alive and
well in my little corner of the universe. Its gonna be the most intense
2 hours radio has ever known!
Of course you know that I just had to open my very first show with
one of the most intense progressive epics I know..none other than "The
Ivory Gate of Dreams" by FATES WARNING (Quietus conquers all!) ....my
program manager kinda flipped when I told him my first song was over
20-minutes long...they better get used to it! Anyhow, here's the
list..I just wish I could broacast this with a more powerful
antenna..this music needs a lot more support than the ten people that
    were probably listening to me!

This is the exact order in which they were played.

FATES WARNING: "The Ivory Gate of Dreams"
    ANGRA: "Nothing to Say"
    ATTACK: "In the Gloom"
    BLIND GUARDIAN: "Somewhere Far Beyond"
    CONCEPTION: "Roll the Fire"
    CRIMSON GLORY: "Eternal World"
    DAMN THE MACHINE: "The Mission"
DREAM THEATER: "Only a Matter of time"
    ELEGY: "Spanish Inquisition"
    HELSTAR: "Abandon Ship"
IRON MAIDEN: "Phantom of the Opera"
    LEMUR VOICE: "Prime of Passion"
    MERCURY RISING: "Minute Man"
    WATCHTOWER: "The Eldritch"
    SANCTUARY: "Die for my Sins"
QUEENSRYCHE: "Queen of the Ryche" <-- This closed out the show
    PERFECTLY!!

I know I left A LOT of bands out....they'll make it on next week or the
week after. The DJ before me plays Country and the DJ after me plays
reggae...thats a pretty drastic switch in formats so I might as well
make the music as insane as possible for the three crickets that are
    picking me up.
I'll post my next list next week...hope some of you check these bands
out because they are too good to pass up.

      later,
         Carlo (aka Fates, aka YtseSatan)

You learn something new everyday... And you're right about the solo in TTT. *Right* after the last note fades out, and where the on the live version it continues, JP plays one of my favorite licks of all time - MAJOR bummer... until I remember all those "imported" CDs I have. :)

My old band could play songs that faded out live!!! What used to do was give the sound-man our set-list and we'd asterik the songs we wanted to fade out. Then he'd take the master fader on the mixing board and slowly slide it down to "zero" as we played the outtro!

    >From: RipZero <ripzero@dreamt.org> >Subject: EJ > >i like it for the simple fact that its wonderfully orchestrated and really >pulling on the emotions. Its no guitar wank album, i dont even look at it >as a "guitarrist" cd, i just think the tunes are really lush and reach out. > d00d! You said it!! It's just a CD chock-full o' great music, but it just so happens there's some wheedlee-dee guitar on it. :) And you know what? I love great music and I love wheedlee-dee guitar. Now doesn't combining two different things you really like in one place kick ass? :) Except this line of logic might not work for jalapeno peppers and Godiva chocolates...

Other times I think fadeouts are good for conceptual >reasons. > Hmm... When I'm REALLY stumped for an ending, I do plan a fade-out... :) But that's a very interesting point... And you're probably right. I guess a fade-out vs. a tight ending could imply certain things about the meaning of the song. While LTL fades out on the album, and it's perfect the way it is; but when they play it live, they obviously haven't learned the trick my old band taught the soundmen we've worked with. ;) But then again, when I was at the Birch Hill show, and they were jammin' out on that "we're gonna jam cuz it fades out on the album" part, I was standing there, wishing they could just continue playing it forever, hoping it'd never end...

Oh and BTW, can you spot the bit of creative fiction in this post? :)

This is for DrX and anyone other Savatage fans. I picked up Savatage's Live in Japan a few months ago and it is an excellent live CD. The sound quality is great and the performances are good and energetic. I don't have the exact setlist in front of me but It contains 8 or 9 songs off of HOR and EOT and a few others such as Gutter Ballet and Jesus Saves. The only bad thing is that it is an import only these days. Email me for the exact set list.

As I am a relatively new Savatage fan, I haven't been able to find the Streets CD yet. I am willing to trade either the Ghost in the Ruins or The Final Bell CDs (they are both the same) for a good Streets CD.

Tickets went on sale today at 10am. I go over to ticketbastard at 930 I am 9th in line and I endded up with section 107 row j. This is basically the middle section on the side and 10 rows off the floor. They were selling pretty good. The first 2 guys got around 10th row on the floor and after that everyone was in the side section. I decided to wait in line rather than call in and not get through and end up with crappy seats. I really need to get a cell phone so I can stand in line and call at the same time...

I guess when I was in line there were about 20 guys and 3 women... Just an observation.

I think that La Villa... influenced DT's Bombay vindaloo.

    What do you think?

    Hi guys;

I have a question, I've been thinking about for a while.

When was the first time DT made MI, and have any of you heard that version on the radio this summer.=20 Pardon me, if you already have discussed this, but I wasn't on this hemisphere the last summer, but when I got back to Sweden I heard some disco-version of the song a lot! I guess it still is un-official, but it would really have been cool, if some station did play it, at least once in a while. I don't know if this song was popular in your country, but I'm afrid it was.=20 At least it made me miss DT, even on unexpected moments, like in discos, or in caf=E9s.

Ok, that was all. Now, go back and read the following "no DTC"-messages
