Tony, you don't have to worry about breakup rumors, just yet. After
each of Rush's more recent studio albums, the DJ's have been talking about
the band breaking up. As for slagging record sales, I haven't a clue where
this DJ was getting his information. TFE's debut was right behind REM's new
record at #5, selling over 300,000 copies in its first week. Those are not
slagging record sales. As for the side projects, they were simply that.
Victor was something to keep Alex busy while Geddy was busy with his
newborn. In some article I read, Alex stated that he gets real lazy about
playing if he's not working on anything, therefore Victor (uggh. those
lyrics). As for breaking up, sure it will eventually happen, but, one thing
that Geddy said about Rush always sticks in my mind. He said that they
approach each album with the goal of making the perfect album. He doesn't
feel that they've done that yet. Also, the band has not really displayed to
the public any of the personal problems that so commonly break up bands.
Anyway, that's enough bandwith taken up by non-DT info. I hope this clears
things up a little for ya, Tony.

I said it, and in retrospect, I think it might have been a reaction to the
mindcrimer post about how the keys should be reduced.....it is still,
however, my opinion that the future body of DT work lies in a more guitar
led direction (not dominated, but led....). The ass I'm pulling that
opinion out of consists mailnly of the progression from WDADU to I&W to
Awake, in which I perceive a lessening of the keyboard's overall role in
    the albums at every step.....

That being said, I wanna say thanks to those telling me to give Derek's
songwriting a chance, Fully intend to do so....and I want to say "what the
    hell???" to this really stupid,
    trying-way-too-hard-to-be-funny-and-failing-miserably post below.....

Not too often I get mad at a post in here, but that one was just
pathetic......but the last question was valid: what DID folks think about
the transition time between CD's firing and JL's hiring?

oh, and while i'm at it, about song titles: started this one, too.....I
NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT WHAT I THOUGHT THE SONGS MIGHT BE LIKE....I only
said some titles looked like mikey bolthead titles.....to those
extrapolating as me pre-judging songs by their titles, what's that line
    about sweeping generalizations???

I think a lot of times that has to do with the decision of the producer, not
necessarily the band. I mean, when they play live, they _can't_ really use
fade outs, thus meaning that they either have to use the ending they
originally wrote for the song, make something up, or just turn it into a jam
leading into the next song... :)

I won't say much more about this, but just to clarify...

    A) If you're receiving 4-5 jams a day, wouldn't it make sense that any
autoreply would go to all those jams? At any rate, you were probably excited
about going on vacation. 'Nuff said.
    B) Why is this "visual bullshit" any more than talk about the Rush album
"visual bullshit". At least they're DT songs. And at least they're
entertaining. If you don't want to play, that's what the scroll button on
the side of your window is for.

Personally, I don't see how any "mentally healthy" person would seriously
consider, and go through with, suicide. My best friend attempted it and
ended up going into therapy and "needing" prescription drugs. Heck, my life
has sucked at times where I get depressed and say "What is this all for?",
but I'm still sitting here, insulting others on a semi-regular basis. :) If
a person is really mentally healthy, they should recognize that having
serious suicidal thoughts is WRONG, and they should get help.

i like it for the simple fact that its wonderfully orchestrated and really
pulling on the emotions. Its no guitar wank album, i dont even look at it
as a "guitarrist" cd, i just think the tunes are really lush and reach out.
Its excellent to throw on to mellow to or just to kick back and enjoy
something you dont have to bash yer head to. i can understand how you could
find it boring i guess, if youre not looking from the right angle, but i
    really digs it.

    Jammers-

Just a few more points... Chris Poland was also on Peace Sells. Holy
shit about the Van Halen thing if it's true. I think Cherone will
make Van Halen certainly more interesting than it's been in the last
few years... On the whole fadeout thing, I agree that sometimes it
could signal a certain "unwillingness" or "inability" to write an
ending ending. Other times I think fadeouts are good for conceptual
reasons. Imagine, if you will, the end to Mirror as a fadeout rather
than sequeing into Lie. That idea might have worked. Or Space Dye
Vest would have benefitted from a fadeout due to the metaphorical
quality of the song. I think that the endings of songs are the
most important part of the song, and "to fade or not to fade"
should be just as much of a compositional decision as anything
else. It's certainly an interesting issue though.

In case any of you are interested, my web site is finally back online. It's
called Dreamstates; it's about my music; it's located at
    http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/3781.

Other note: My acoustic FINALLY got here. It's an Ibanex AE10 (same series
JP uses (or used, ::shrug). Mahogany sides, back, and neck, pine top. Sounds
GREAT, plays like only an Ibanez can. And for the person who everyone was
replying about Ibanez guitar to: I play a customized EX (the original, not
the crap ones they make now -- I call is an EXS) and a Korean Jem 555, both
with DiMarzio pickups. Acoustics, the AE10, and I've got an oscar Schmidt
    classical on the way.

    > were," or were they more open minded.

Well, I've been a fan since WDADU... Apart from the crappy production
this was pretty much one of my all-time favourite albums... until I&W
came along :-) Anyway, shortly after WDADU was released, I heard that
Chuckie D. left the band and that they also lost their recording deal...

So, I basically thought that was the end of Dream Theater... Imagine my
surprise when a friend of mine called me, back in '92, telling me there
was a NEW Dream Theater album out there ! He found it by accident at a
record store, and called me to ask if he should pick one up for me too !
Of course I said "Hell YEAH!", but was wondering what to expect...
I mean, how in the *hell* could they *ever* out-do "When Dream And Day
Unite" ? Well, obviously they did !

Of course, I think James is the better singer. But I don't like it when
people piss all over Chuckie D., simply because I fell in love with
Dream Theater's music thanks to "When Dream And Day Unite"...
And *he* was responsible for 1/5 of it !

I'd like to think I would have kept an open mind about James, if I'd
knowm about him longer than those two hours I had to wait for my copy
of I&W... If I'd known about all those auditions, I probably would have
trusted DT to pick the right one for the job...

That's what I did with Marillion, when *they* were auditioning singers,
back in '88-'89. On MTV's Headbanger's Ball they asked people to send in
demo's... They also said they weren't looking for heavy metal singers...
I really kept an open mind, even after I saw the first interview with
'the new guy' (the complete opposite of Fish) and saw the "Hooks In You"
video before they released "Seasons End"... At first I still liked the
Fish-era better, but now I'm a 'hogy'-fan all the way...

They really matured a lot (musically and lyrically), since he joined...
It took them a while to fully convince me, though... Dream Theater did
that with just one album ! Although WDADU kicked some major ass, I&W
was a much more mature and professional album...

Right now, I'd say "Images And Words" and Marillion's "Brave" are two
of my all-time favourite albums, and I'm convinced both bands will, one
day, come up with an album that will out-do *those* too !

    > I thought Kevin Moore was and still is great, but, I would like to
    > really see what Derek has to offer before I start talking about
    > reducing keys to support status. I would like to hear from any pre
    > I&W fans as to whether they had like anxieties about James LaBrie.

As for Derek... I thought of Kevin Moore as one of the best new
keyboardists out there, and was shocked when I heard the news about
him leaving DT... I was very enthousiastic when I heard about Jordan
Rudess replacing Kevin, after reading some things about him in a
    prog-magazine here in Holland...

Then I heard about Derek... All I knew was the fact that he toured
with Kiss and Alice Cooper, and frankly, I've never liked either of
them... So, I really wasn't too happy about him joining the band,
instead of Rudess... I'm still trying to keep an open mind, although
I think he's gonna have a hard time filling Kev's shoes... And I sure
as hell hope they *won't* reduce the keys to support status, on the
next album(s)... I *do*, however, trust Dream Theater's decision...
Musicians like them won't settle for less that sheer excellence :-)
So, talent isn't a problem... The only thing I'm worried about is that
I won't like his style... or not as much as I liked Kevin's...
    Time will tell, I guess...

Ahh, I gave a disclaimer. Like you haven't done similar things when
    in a bad mood!

You can't judge a book by it's cover. I hope people don't REALLY
think this stuff. I mean... Erotomania scared the hell outta me when
I saw it on the album, because I know what it means and if they wrote
lyrics to that song I had low hopes for how it would be.... and then
it turned out to be instrumental, and rocked my head off! From then
on I decided I'll never say "Lame title... must suck."

No one will say that. And further, people shouldn't get their
panties in a bunch over someone saying "_____ Sucks!" because that's
an opinion too... No one means that "Green Day Sucks and you can't
listen to them or you're a goon." So on that note, Alanis sucks. :)

Why is everybody being so bitchy these days? Steve, the VM isn't
taking up an entire jam, and further, MOST of us really LIKE the
thread. If you don't you know how to skip a message. And Maddy has
a valid point... so what if that was a mistake? It DID becaome a
huge inconvenience... and you should at LEAST give a little leniency
to things like VM... I mean, we didn't mail bomb you, and no one
yelled at you when you got back. In the good old days you would have
been flamed to hell and back. Just relax. The thread will die out
    soon enough.

The new 7 Strings (not sure if they're still officially called
Universe) are available from anywhere between $1400 and $1700 and
they're only available in the Black and Green style, if my memory
serves me. You can usually (if you REALLY REALLY try) find used 7
strings between $700 and $1200. I have a White Universe from the
earliest run, and an RG550 that I've battered and abused to musical
    perfection

Uh, not based on what I've heard...

I went to both Mike Portnoy clinics down here in Ft. Lauderdale and he
jammed along with DATs of the following songs:

    -Lines In The Sand
    -You Or Me
    -Raise The Knife
    -Just Let Me Breathe

"Lines In The Sand" opens with a friggin keyboard solo!!!!! Throughout the
4 songs, (they are still only in their demo stages) there's plenty of
keyboards - some really cool parts, I might add.

You heard it from me, and I heard it from Mike. :P
