>>Dream Theater and especially Rush and Journey (though DT is
>>my favorite band) will be remembered for a long time.
I am starting to believe this more and more. I am over 30 so I
grew up in UK when Genesis and Yes and Rush et al were in their
earlier years and were maybe considered "popular" but they never
died off. Now, as I introduce young guys (I am scout master to
16-18 yr olds) to progressive music they go out and buy old Rush,
Pink Floyd and Genesis along with newer bands like DT and Queensryche
and it all sounds great to them. I don't think any teenagers or 20's are out
there buying pop music from the 70's (Bee Gees, Three Dog Night,
Slade, Abba) and rediscovering them. However, I do believe that music styles
recycle in the popular vein and we'll see 70's and 80's pop-styles
again in the future but it will not be the same bands and there may
not even be a recognized connection. Progressive rock/metal
(as we define it) has a timelessness about it that is only seen in styles
such as folk music, opera and classical music (now those guys are old!)
About Mike Portnoy :
Since the recent criticism of MP's influence on the drums in IAW particulary,
I have been listening carefully to the DT CD's and I think MP is excellent in both
style and function and he lends to the hardness of DT that makes them stand
out from other progressive bands IMO. He also seems to be the character among
the band. When DT and Fates Warning played in Denver last year, MP interrupted
FW's set by walking onstage in a white bathrobe holding a candle-lit birthday cake
for JMatheos (his birthday that day). After leading the crowd in "Happy
Birthday" he chucked the cake into the front rows, licked his fingers and
walked off. I was amazed.

i totally agree with the fact that voice can be very effective in enhancing
atmosphere. i do it a lost in my own music. but it must be doen tastefully.
i mean, have you heard "long island expressway" on "acoustic dreams".
sorry, but james is fucking anooying on that song. i just want to tell him
to shut the hell up. i suppose he's getting off on jp's guitar playing? ;)

who the hell cares whether or not green day can play d.t. covers. will they
likely do it? no. so why argue about it. i mean, this is a stupid thing
to get riled up about.

i've noticed this too. it's sad that a lot of people take this attitude.
i mean, personally, there's a LOT of genres i like better than prog, and
a LOT of bands i like better than d.t. for various reasons.
is that bad? no. there's absolutely nothing wrong with a little diversity.
wait a minute? d.t. not my favorite bands? damn, i seem to have committed
the ytsejam cardinal sin. ;) pardon while i slip on some clothes that are

later, folks,

Ryan,
ALL keyboards that were played by Vai were sequenced on the album. This
would not necessarily degrade his status as a musician. Actually, I believe
that it would be more of a challenge to write and sequence phrases or pieces
of music on an instrument which still feels odd to play on, or in Steve's
case, an instrument which is definitely not his "mother tongue" musically
speaking. Anyway, Steve Vai has once again proved himself a musical genious.
By the way... how about those vocal chords! Not bad eh?

I can give you a brief run-down of the roster:
Clockwork - some of you have already heard the demo. We have the final
version of the song, including an outstanding new vocalist.
Happenstance - prog mixed with pop. Influenced by Kansas, Steely Dan,
Toto. They're getting great reviews everywhere, including a write-up
in Recording Magazine a few months back.
Mirror - influenced by Queensryche, Rush and Journey. can't go wrong there.
Cold Front - more traditional art-rock ala Yes, Genesis, Floyd, some
Grateful Dead.
3250 - aggressive thrash prog, like old Metallica
Psychedlic Lullabies - influenced by all eras of Rush, but with
completely different vocals. other strange influences also.
Facade - Queensryche, Fates Warning with some other obscure
influences. Brand new song for this release.
Inferno - hard to describe. the drummer is tighter than a drum machine!
The Age of Reason - ELP, Yes, Rush. can't go wrong.
Naked - less prog than the others. influenced by Zeppelin, Van Halen,
Kiss.
Natures Call - ELP, Asia. from England!
Atlantis - very prog. Heavy Dream Theater, Rush influences. This song
has a Metropolis feel to it.
Hope that helps. The sound clips are too short to give you a good
feel for the music. It's all quality stuff.

getting something from Warlock, unless you can stand mediocre
songwriting and English singing with a strong German accent.

Found the thoughts of mindcrimer most distateful. He must leave this
place at once :) I no longer have to imagine what it must be like to
hear without listening.
----------
The recent post concerning the 'final exit' reminded me of what someone
once told me that I found truly inspiring and put it all into
perspective. He said it's not about courage or bravery, it's about
SELFISHNESS. Think about all the people that love the heck out of you
and how much hurt you'd be causing them. What a selfish thing to do!
----------
I particularly enjoyed Clockwork, Happenstance and Facade. Is it just me
or does the singer on reflections remind you of another group (Damn
Yankees, perhaps)? Anyways, looking forward to the new release.

Okay here goes!
I bought SG's "CiS". I have been putting off buying this album for a little
while(about 6 months :) Here is some advise if you don't have it...GET
IT!!! I was not expecting this! The songs are just plain great! I went to
their website(I forgot the URL), and it said that their next CD is due out
sometime in '97. WOOHOO!! But I have a question, what was the lineup for
their first ablum? And is it even close to CiS musicwise?
* For whose of you, who don't know who Shadow Gallery is, well you should! ;-) *
I was also checking out the Queensryche page(forgot that URL, too :( ) They
said that the new QR ablum is coming out sometime around spring '97!!
I also got Echolyn "As The World". This was kind of a let down. Is this
ablum their worst or am I being too hard on them since I was listening to
CiS? :) No, really I want to know which album is their best. Oh yeah, and
is it easy to find/order?
Superior *might* come out in USA? Only might? Could someone give me the
address of NOISE records, so that I can explain them the error of their
ways! :) I have 2 .wav files of Superior(Truth, and Why). Truth is kind of
heavy and Why is kind of light. And someone was saying(about week ago) how
writing to NOISE and telling them to release Superior in USA was only going
to get NOISE mad. Well, I see your point but won't writing in show NOISE
that Superior is fine the way their are? I mean Bernd(burned! :) said in a
post awhile ago that NOISE was telling them what to do... So, wouldn't us
writing to NOISE keep NOISE off Superior's back? Just wondering.
Okay now on to Savatage. I have S:ARO, EOT, HOR, and DWD. Which album
should I get next? I ask this since people are kind of split between the
older albums.
Does Magna Carta have an email address? Or could someone tell me which
bands/artists
are on the label?
One other thing, since summer has ended, is it just me or is everything
little thing being turned into some sort of flame? Come on! If you don't
agree with someone's point of view don't worry! Stay calm. Relax, remember
that not everyone agrees with you.

I think it would be kind of neat to see Green Day cover Yngwie. It
would be interesting to see how a band of the 90's MTV-punk genera cover the
more neo-classical/80's rock style of Yngwie. Sure, it wouldn't be the
same, but it would certainly be more profitable, which today, unfortunately,
has become the industry's barometer for the quality of a band (that and its
appearance.) On that note, I shall sign off.
