Heard on the radio today that there has been no official confirmation
about Mr. Cherone being the next singer for VanHalen. About Cherone in
Broadway type shows, he was in Jesus Christ Superstar, I believe.
Dale R. Newberry
P.S. I was looking at one of those cheesy metal mags today at a
Waldenbooks. They asked all these bands what TV shows they would want
to be on if they could. Well, one of the dudes fomr Fates or Savatage
(can't remember which) said Conan O'Brien. Hmm... (please don't let
this start that thread again). What really cracked me up was Blaze
Bailey saying that he'd like to be on a show like Supermarket Sweep or
something like that. Couldn't you see someone like him on a show like
that? It'd be friggin' hilarious.

Babs mentioned the other day something about the shirt sizes. The prices
listed there are +$1 and +$2 if you're getting a XXL or XXXL,
respectively. The sizes actually range from Medium to XXXL. If you want
a Medium shirt, please email me *NOW* because I have had *NO* orders for
that size and unless I do, I'm going to change them over to a larger
size.

I don't know if you can really speak of an influence, but I definitely know
that Eve reminds me of Angelo Badalamenti's fabulous soundtrack to the even
more fabulous TV show TWIN PEAKS! Furthermore, look at the backcover of I&W:
The carpet and the statues remind me of the Black Lodge (of TP-fame of
course...), and "the dancing dwarf, Bob & The Log Lady" are mentioned in the
credits.
I know that MP is a fan of David 'God' Lynch, so the connection is definitely
there.
Excuse me, if that topic has been already discussed on the jam, but if not, I
think it's about time...

Two more questions for the people getting to know me all too well through
posting. First, how the hell can I get on the Van Halen and Yngwie
list-servers? Second, can people tape some Yngwie for me? Specifically,
I really want a coppy of Steeler and Fire and Ice. Let me know private

friend who wants to see Green Day play Yngwie. Crash!! Know what I mean?

Actually, it IS Surrounded. :)
ON THE WHOLE ending and fade-out discussion, I think all songs that DT faded
out on work well. For Take the Time, the whole thing is about Time, and the
fade out gives it a sort of 'this will never end' feeling. For Learning to
Live....I don't have any philosophical reason...it just WORKS. I only wish
they'd played longer before they faded out. I love that outro. And for
Scarred, the outro is one of those melodies that kind of keeps you on edge
because it never really resolves back to the I chord, and when it does, it
doesn't stay there for long. Even that time they played it live, they segued
into The Electric Version of the Silent Man (c) Augie, 1995. (didn't they?)
On endings in general, I think the best ending to any DT song is The Killing
Hand. Talk about going out with a Bang.

Maybe a little....that made me think about something. Does anybody know
exactly how improvised Bombay Vindaloo was? How much of it was planned and
how much happened on the spot? I myself think that somebody said "Okay,
start small, get big, then go small again, then get HUGE, then get small and
end it." and that's all. Why? Because of the first part before the quiet
part in the middle. When they were building, they got real huge....but it
seemed like they weren't quite sure when to stop and get quiet. Listen to
the John P...it sounded like he was ready to stop for the middle section
about three different times until they did. Was anyone at that concert, or
have a video of it? It'd be interesting to see if they were nodding to
eachother during that or something. Another thing that makes me think it
wasn't real planned out is that there were no synchronized hits...meaning
that there weren't really any rhythms that they all played together. Either
way, that song rules.
>I just would like to address the visual music people. I don't mind

>Thanks a lot. Tony
There's really no rules to it. It's just people typing out rhythmic
syllables, and strategically placing them to indicate differences in pitch,
and everyone else trying to guess what DT song it is. Everybody does theirs
differently...no set way to do it, though.

Do you mean you've never heard of DAMN THE MACHINE ? Their self-titled debut
album is absolutely awesome! IMHO everybody on this list should know it. Most
of the songs on it are quite complex, but when you've listened to them for a
few times, you'll love them. "On With the Dream" was destined to be a live
anthem. Could anybody tell me what happened to this brilliant band? As far as
I know, they've split up, so what is Mr. Poland doing right now?

That's your opinion. I think we all have to understand that one's
opinion is not necessarily another's. There are people who like Green
Day (personally, I don't), people that don't, people that don't give a
shit, but listen 'cause it plays in the radio. That would prevent lots
of useless discussions here :P Just a thought.

For any of you on the list who may not have been exposed to Rush yet,
don't buy this crap. IMHO, all of the stuff pre-signals isn't as
good as post-signals stuff. Notice I'm not gonna bash the abnd and
say that their pre-signals stuff is no good, just typical 70's poor
production, and sounds of a band striving find their sense of being
(I really think that they did that on Hold Your Fire, my favorite
Rush Album).

I don't think that they had time to think much about influences until
after the show was over. That was completely improvised. (Unless
memory serves me correctly and someone said that John P. wrote it on
the back of a paper bag on the plane ride there. Or maybe that was

It's pretty catchy music indeed, but truly not my favorite kind of
stuff. I can't say much because if Longview or Basketcase are ever

Heh heh. I almost forgot that I, too, am the proud owner of an Ibanez guitar. It's a beat up "Performance" model acoustic, but it gets the job done.

Well, I'm not ashamed of myself and I am no fool at all. I love RUSH, but I have a very critical opinion about WHAT IS GOOD MUSIC. The difference between you and me is that I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT I WANT TO HEAR. It doesn't happen with you. You're so FANATIC RUSH FAN THAT EVERY RUSH RELEASE YOU SAY IT'S GOOD ONLY BECAUSE IT'S A "RUSH" ALBUM. Where is your critical sense ? Well, I think you have no brains at all...
Everybody knows that RUSH was a PROGRESSIVE BAND in the 70's, but RUSH became a COMMERCIAL BAND in the 80's. The same thing happened with YES and GENESIS in the 80's. You may think I'm radical , but it's not true. I listen to a lot of different music styles (Progressive, Metal, Blues, Jazz, ...), but one thing I really can't stand is POP MUSIC. I DON'T FORGIVE RUSH : THEY BETRAYED THE PROGRESSIVE MUSIC IDEAL. They turned on a POP MUSIC STYLE, and sold out themselves. They decided to make music to set RADIO STATIONS playlist and MTV.
You know, they did not care about music quality, they were only interested in making easy money. They wanted to become milionaire. I am not a communist (and I will never be one), but I condemm this attitude. And one reason I really love DREAM THEATER is because DT'S music IS AS GOOD AS OLD PROGRESSIVE RUSH STYLE. And I hope DREAM THEATER WILL NOT BECOME A COMMERCIAL BAND AS RUSH BECAME.
>>Well, albums from "Signals" to "Roll the Bones" are no good, >>most DREAM THEATER fans know that

They are fuckin' TRASH. I'd put them in a trash can. An excelent RUSH album is something like "2112", "Hemispheres", "Fly by Night". But I tell you what : "Conterparts" is a nice album. And I dig "Test for Echo " !!!! :)))))
>I mean just LISTEN to the keyboard backings and all around >musical composition, and any idiot can see that it was a definite >influence on DT.
Well, I think I'm talking with a idiot in some place. It seems to me you haven't read DT FAQ. DT Keyboard was inlfuenced by YES. It seems to me you never listened to YES ALBUM, FRAGILLE, TALES FROM TOPOGRAPHICS OCEANS, ...
>saying that those later RUSH albums are no good is a pretty bold, but >very uneducated statement. But to generalize that most DT fans *KNOW* that >they are no good is just plain stupid!
Well, generalizing is a very dangerous thing, I agree with you in this statement. Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE MUSIC FAN ??? Or maybe you are a POP MUSIC FAN (which is not that bad at all....). Well, SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO, and ROLL THE BONES sounds to me like a crossover between U2 and THE POLICE and I'm really not interested in those bands. I'm interested in PROGRESSIVE MUSIC.
Hey, why don't you listen to Bon Jovi or Green Day stuff ??? (Arghhh......)
