    Hello Pat ! :)))

I agree with you. I also love (OLD) RUSH (and I love "Test for Echo" too).
I'm always comparing DREAM THEATER SONGS with RUSH SONGS.

In my humble opinion, some RUSH SONGS that could have influenced DREAM THEATER
    SONGS are exposed bellow :

    1) "Tom Sawyer" - "6:00" ???
    2) "2112" - "A Change of Seasons" ???
    3) "YYZ" - "YtseyJam" ???
    4) "Close to the Heart" - "Surrounded"

What's your opinion about it ???

But I disagree with everything you said about RUSH past stuff. You know,
DREAM THEATER wouldn't be what they are if they don't have listened to RUSH
past stuff, and learned how to play it. Most of DT songs are inspired in
RUSH songs. Did you know that ???
    --------------------------------------------------------------------
I realize that Rush paved the road for Prog Rock for band like DT, FW,
and tons of others. I believe I stated in my first post, that the one
reason I never really got into Rush was because I couldn't stand
    Geddy's voice. He sounded like a little troll/imp. I don't like his
banshee like voice. However, on TFE his singing was very
ear-friendly. I didn't hear him shriek. He sounded very good.
Anyways, just so EVERYbody knows, Rush is a great band, and they
always be. They are just not one of my favorites.

Hello, MacFly? *knock* *knock* *knock* *knock* Geddy hasn't
shreiked for, like, *eighteen (18) years*! (Hemispheres).

I just would like to address the visual music people. I don't mind
seeing, but I just can't seem to understand it. Can anyone help me out?
    Thanks a lot. Tony

The only one I've gotten so far was the Surrounded one! Seeing
what people said the songs were, I would write them differently,
            but I'm not a musician...

Well, sorry to crush your hopes of trying to sound like you know what
your talking about, but most DREAM THEATER fans (and now we know how much
of a DT fan you're NOT) know that these albums were VERY heavy influences
in DT's music. Just listen to SIGNALS, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE, HOLD YOUR
FIRE, POWER WINDOWS, PRESTO, and ROLL THE BONES!!!

Didn't JP bring Hold Your Fire into the studio during the
making of Awake to get an idea of what he might want the record
to sound like? I know I read this.

I would most closely compare this phenomenon with, for example,
Disney Land. You don't say, "I am going to *the* Disney Land."
But, conversely, in the US we don't say, "I attend University of
Maryland" but, "I attend *the* University of Maryland." So, it can
be confusing because some english-speakers say things like, "go to
    university"

Ah! But you *wouldn't* say, "I attended _the_ UMD", I think
"UMD" qualifies as a proper name, even spelled out.

    Zach on Fade Outs:

I'm suprised no one's mentioned Pull Me Under. What's up
with that? One fade-out that pisses me off is Cynic's "How
Could I?" I love that end part, I crank my [audio] system
to catch as much of it as possible.

One thing some of us maybe should remember is that there is a BIG
difference between what would be considered a favourite performer and
what might be considered a more talented performer. For example, Victor
Wooten is one of the best bassists I've heard, but Steve Harris is
probably my favourite. The same goes for JM. I think Myung is a better
bassist (i.e. more talented) than Harris, but Harris remains probably my
fave (also Les Claypool, but you can't really compare him with any of
these guys because his style's so much different). I think JL is one
of, if not the most talented singer in metal/prog today, but Bruce
Dickinson is probably my favourite (could you tell I dig Maiden?). Now,
DT is probably my favourite band (DEFINITELY my favourite prog/metal
band), and is the most talented overall, IMO. Just some thoughts.
    Later.

P.S. Anybody within earshot of K-SHE 95 and 93.7 KSD, THEY ARE STILL
GIVING AWAY RUSH TICKETS. I already have mine, but I thought some of
you planning on going to the St. Louis show who don't have tix yet (you
out there Rip? :), you might just want to sit by the phone with the
radio on one of these stations. BTW, KSD gave some away around lunch
time, if that's any help (they're probably giving them away at any given
    time). Cheers.

Ben. On the Bombay vindelu, (phoenetic pronounciation) thing, another theory
to support the improvisation theory is that there are only three chords in
the whole song. No changes, no time sig changes, no modulations of any kind.
Totally un-DT like. In addition, it was never ever recorded. let's ask that

You know, it is possible to be influenced by so,mething even in
improvisation. I mean, how many times have you improved something only to
find similarities between whatyou just played and another song. I find it all
the time in my own work. So bv may have been improvved, but it can still
share some of La Villa's influence. Am I making any sense? No. did you
    understand that? Cause I didn't.

    Hi.

I figured I'd crawl out of hiding a second time this month to comment on
a few recent threads and stuff.

Someone mentioned Masquerade. I also have their "Surface of Pain" CD and
    it rocks. Real Cool...good singer.

Chris Poland had a solo album and was in a cool band called Damn The
Machine. Haven't heard the solo but DTM was real cool with some definite
prog tendacies. Last I heard he was doing another solo thing.

Rush's TfE and Lemur Voice are two very good CDs as well. For some
oddball reason I never really got into Rush before I heard the tribute
and now I'm in the process of catching up...

Also got Varga "Oxygen" which is OK but not as cool as the first one.
One song on it really sucks big time.

Now time to mention a couple cool bands that I never hear anything about on
the jam that i feel should be mentioned:

Edwin Dare - these guys are from, umm..., somewhere(Detroit?). Fantastic
band. EXCELLENT music. They mix jazz, metal, etc. into smooth flowing
neato stuff. The singer is also very cool. The bass player,Kevin Chown,
played bass with the band Tiles and has a solo album out or coming out.
The guitarist also has a solo album. the only negative would be the
lyrics. They tend to get cheesy city.

Seventhsign - another cool band highlighted by an excellent singer. Visit
their web page at www.seventhsign.com to hear more from them.

I guess the demons are calling me back so I must leave

    >how much happened on the spot? I myself think that somebody said "Okay,
    >start small, get big, then go small again, then get HUGE, then get small and
    >end it." and that's all.

I tend to believe that for the most part the song was a cool jam based on a
specific scale, one I so fondly call the "snake charmer". If anyone knows
the actual name...? The song basically plays around the E with with a jump
up a half step back to D then they do octaves up the length until resolving
    back to the E.

    E F G+ A B C D E I believe.

What I LOVE is how JP just tears that apart!!! That song is such a showcase
for the amount of finesse that guy commands over the fretboard, he mixes
such a great range of styles and melodies that it always amazes me. hehe I
    play Ibanez.

As for the connection between BV and La villa... I always thought that it
went YYZ ----> Ytsejam, same concept, different interpretations. I've always
thought it would be cool to patch Mike P's drum solo live for ytsejam into
the YYZ (off exit stage left for example) drum solo to see if you could pass
it by the scrutinous ears of a rush fan. Just the mad see-if-tist in me I

Heh! I think I spent somewhere around $30.00 for that about two
years ago on import. ($50 for Awake w/the itty-bitty Eve CD, it
rulz! Too bad I can't play it with anything, oh, well I got The
Silent Man single) Pretty well worth the $30 excpet for the (of
course) screaming fit James has in The Killing Hand (I'M IN THE
VALLEY!!!!) Hrm. I like it, though.

Well, Frederico, I hope your wearing flame retardant clothes, but to
me it sounds like you can't find yer wiener.

    > happen with you. You're so FANATIC RUSH FAN THAT EVERY RUSH RELEASE YOU SAY
    > IT'S GOOD ONLY BECAUSE IT'S A "RUSH" ALBUM. Where is your critical sense ?
    > Well, I think you have no brains at all...

OK. Now the truth is out. I should have known that Rush only writes
songs for Freddie-wetty-the-beddy. We've all been listening to them
for nothing. Their whole concern, (as for every other band in the
world) is to cater to Senor Fred.

    > Everybody knows that RUSH was a PROGRESSIVE BAND in the 70's, but RUSH became a

Of course they were a progressive band, but I think progressive has
means alot more than time changing. (Duh!) Progressive music should
progress, change, and give the listener something new to look forward
to with each album. I think DT, Rush, and Queensryche have done that
very well the past few years.

Now let me get this straight, if the members of Rush are
Millionaires, then they must have sold quite a few albums. To sell
quite a few albums, I guess a few (million) people must like the stuff
they write. If you don't like it don't buy the damn albums and quit
whining about it. I'm sure you could have found another band to
listen to in the last 15 years Rush has been writing this *commercial*
    material.

    > They are fuckin' TRASH. I'd put them in a trash can.

I guess that's where trash goes, huh. Tomorrow we'll teach you
proper usages for collective nouns. Good boy!

    > Hey man, what do you think you are ? Are you really a PROGRESSIVE MUSIC FAN ???
    > Or maybe you are a POP MUSIC FAN (which is not that bad at all....).

Who said you have to be a fan of prog-rock to like DT. Let me guess,
Frederico said? Let's decise for ourselves, yes?

    > Hey, why don't you listen to Bon Jovi or Green Day stuff ???
    > (Arghhh......) ^^^^^^^

Don't mind if I do. Ride cowboy Ride!

In retrospect, this has been a long flame. my only recommendation
for you is to shut up an' quit hashing our opinions with your
oh-so-insightful own. I see alot of stuff go through this page that
I don't like. Take it with a grain of salt and delete the damn
thing. I think I speak for a few of us when I say, "Please go fuck
    yourself."

Oh, yeah, you can't find your wiener. Sorry, dude. Tough night!
