    Hi all

here are another couple of totally subjective reviews of stuff that I have just
    bought for your delectation.

SYMPHONY X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy

When I bought 'The Damnation Game', I was knocked out by these guys, so I was
understandably interested to see how they had developed on this album. The
answer for me is simple: they haven't (or hardly). The blazing guitar solos from
Michael Romeo are still there, the Kevin Moore-like solos by Michael Pinnella
ditto, flashy neo-classical passages, good heavy riffs, very solid musicianship,
it's all there, but it's almost exactly the same as the last album. Some of the
guitar work in fact tends to get a bit wanky, sort of 'listen to how fast and
complex I can play'. Listening to these sort of solos, I can fully understand
Bernd Basmer's view that a solo should be an integral part of a song/track, and
should not stick out like a sore thumb (hope you don't mind me quoting you,
Bernd). The singer has got a bit better, especially on the title track, but
he's still wearing those too-tight trousers that seem to be all the rage with
prog bands. A good album, but these guys are going to have to do something
different next time if they want me to buy any more stuff. Flame away.

THE 3RD AND THE MORTAL - In This Room

How come there are so many really innovative bands that come from Scandinavian
countries? Is it something they put in the water, or what? Each album this band
puts out represents a logical development of the last one, but also a departure
from what they did in the past - real progressive music. Music is possibly not
the right word, perhaps tone paintings or acoustic images would be more correct.
The dark, gloomy gothic metal origins of this band can still be heard on this
album, but it's sometimes hard to work out what instruments are being played.
Sometimes it's almost like looking at an Impressionist painting - they give
you a vague idea of what's there, they tease you, and leave the fine details up
to you. Extensive use is made of tapes, special effects, loops and, of course,
Ann-Mari Edvardsen's amazing voice - sometimes she sounds like Maria Callas, and
a few seconds later she is screaching away like Bjork on acid having an orgasm.
If you liked 'Painting On Glass', check this out. Very atmospheric. Weird,
weirder, weirdest. And no, you can't dance to it.

I'll be posting the receipe for the Ytse petition cocktail as soon as I come up
    with something sufficiently disgusting.

    stay safe and happy listening

    Hi all

one point slipped my mind when I was writing my review of the album 'Divine
Wings Of Tragedy' by Symphony X. Has anybody else noticed that the main
opening riff of the title track sounds a hell of a lot like 'Mars' from the
Planets Suite by Gustav Holst. I mean the bit from 1 minute 40 (when they stop
their Beach Boys impression) to about 2 minutes 45. Very difficult not to hear
    it, I think.

Thanks for posting the reviews, Neil. It's good to hear people's insight.

    >SYMPHONY X - The Divine Wings Of Tragedy

I was hesitant in buying this album, one because of the price, and two
because of the Yngwie comparison. At least a good friend of mine thought
that the first album (self-titled) was just an average Yngwie metal band.
The other albums must be different. I'll buy this album anyways just
because I heard so much about them.

Did anybody buy the German import? How much cheaper is it than the Japanese
    version?

I have recently bought some neo-classical albums like Ayreon where it sounds
fresh, not something rehashed. I liked a couple of songs on Artension that
were taped for me. The keyboardist has chops and smokes. The fast double
    drumming can get irritating though.

    Walter.

I just remembered most of the conversation when Derek mentioned QR..

Derek is up there talking about something, and someone mentions
Queensryche... He goes on for a minute, then pauses and says "By the way,
did anyone get their new CD?"

Almost immediately, the room is filled with boos and hisses and people
screaming "It sucks!" and other comments. All the while, Derek is finding
interesting things to look at on the ceiling, looking around quickly so he
doesn't have to personally comment on what *he* thinks, but conveying the
idea fairly well without saying a word.

Eventually, he looks back down and attempts to change the subject: "So,
did the Rams move here? Is it the St Louis Rams now?"

Some people start cheering, then from the back of the room:

    "They suck too!"

    :)

As far as the Ytse-Asshole page, there are at least 2 things wrong. First
of all, I get the list in ACK mode, so I have no idea what Digest # a
message is from, so scratch that part. Also, there should be no anonymity!
It's too easy to anonymously call someone an asshole. But to attach your
name to that accusation not only takes more balls, but usually constitutes
a legitimate reason. Plus, if you are accused of being an asshole, you
should have the right to know who your accusers are, and to defend yourself.

I want to appologize for a delay in the next shipment of shirts. There
are currently 3 orders waiting to be shipped out, those are:

    Randall Braun
    Andreas Berger
    Joshua Rasiel

I hope to get this cleared up and get the shirts out as soon as possible,
hopefully before the end of the week. I just wanted to let you guys know
that I haven't forgotten about you.

As soon as I get these taken care of, there should be another update on
the way. In the meantime, anyone interested in getting a Ytsejam shirt
for themselves and get the (accurate except for the # of shirts sold)
    information at:

It's funny you mention this. Because I was in a magazine store with my
cousin about two weeks ago and we saw a cover with Manson on it and he
told me the rumor. I didn't believe it at first (I still don't) but it
would be so cool if Josh Saviano actually is Marylin Manson.

I'm just getting caught up on the jams, so pardon my lateness with
this. Regarding all the talk about story albums, I have one to add to
the list that most of you have probably never heard of:

    Resurrection Band: Lament

This is a christian metal band that's been around for 25 years now. They
have about 20 albums and "Lament" is their latest release. Its the story
of a young man's journey through life and the problems, decisions, and
solutions he encounters. Its really very good, check it out.

I have tested them with the Real Player 3.0 (free) version and they all
work fine. Try downloading the latest release, there is a link right above
    the sound clips.

Quoth 2424... A note: in this album cover there is the vbaddress of
Stratovarius official web-page. It is http://www.netlife.fi/Stratovarius.

Reply...I tried this URL, as written, and it didn't work (at least in
Netscape). It appears to be case-sensitive (no phlames), as the following
    did work:

    http://www.netlife.fi/stratovarius/

There is also an unofficial homepage at:

    http://www.dra.nl/~jooft/stratovarius/

with links, including a Jens Johansson Homepage:

    http://www.panix.com/~jens/

I've been intrigued by what I've read on Stratovarius/Jens Johansson. Any
recommendations on which CD to start with??? Email direct if you want, or
post here, as others may be interested as well.
