I figured that this was harmless enough to post, since those of you who are
curious might get a modikim of amusement from my description. Time to get
off the Josta wagon I think.

At 12:11 PM 4/11/97 EDT, Chris White wrote:

    >don't know what *grin* Let me know, and we'll try to set something up :)

Yeah, that's the ticket... I have the Majesty demo CD and have taped it
off. I must say that while I don't mind having the disc for collector's
value (aka "sentiment"), I don't think I'm going to listen to it often. The
vocalist sucks even worse than anyone you can imagine. Saying that Chris
Collins didn't have what it takes (I think that's how they put in in the
FAQ) is a serious example of diplomacy.

However, the music is pretty good. I can xerox the lyrics sheet for ya.
Vital Star in particular is definitely worth a remake. I'd like to hear
LaBrie on it, and to hear the band do another take now that they've learned
    a little discipline.

The lyrics are exceptionally cheesy, alternating with your typical
high-n-mighty loftiness. That they are trying so hard to be like oh, say
Rush or Yes maybe, is what really kills the demo. But... you can hear them
developing their sound. In some places (March of the Tyrant, I think) you
say, wow, what if they'd followed that route? That would have been an
    entirely different band!

I know that I'm making this sound awful. To be fair, it was their first
effort -- I think it was recorded just a few months after they started
practising, which is a hell of a lot better than I've done. To their credit
(except for Chris) they have so much raw potential showing on the songs that
it's surprising they didn't get a sponsor. Everyone except Myung has really
improved; I think Myung has always had the talent from the beginning (the
virtuoso of the group). Petrucci has had to work on it. Portnoy has toned
himself down (age, I think, more than anything).

It's a fascinating study of a group in its infancy. And you know how
infants are (I've had two)... they crap in their pants, drool, and crawl
about, then get a little bigger and say cute things and then BAM! all of a
sudden they're having an intelligent conversation with you! So... Majesty
must have been the drooling stage, and WDADU would have been the
teeth-cutting toddler stage, and then I&W is just so different. All along
you can see the potential and the way they start to draw on it. In this
progression, I guess you could say that Awake is their rowdy teenager angst
    album (TM).

I just hope they don't flatline like Queensryche's latest. God, that SUCKED
    mightily.

SO! Well! Yes! Enough babbling, sorry to go on about it, just got out of
class and picked up my mail (about 45 ytsejams this week, ugh, gotta catch
    up sometime)...

Q: How many Ytsejammers does it take to change a light bulb?

    A: 854:

1 to change the light bulb and to post to the jam that the light bulb has been changed

14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently.

7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs.

27 to point out spelling/grammar errors in posts about changing light bulbs.

53 to flame the spell checkers

56 to write to Skadz complaining about the light bulb discussion and its inappropriateness to the jam.

41 to correct spelling in the spelling/grammar flames.

59 to post that this list is not about light bulbs and to please take this email exchange to alt.lite.bulb

53 to demand that cross posting to alt.grammar, alt.spelling and alt.punctuation about changing light bulbs be stopped.

81 to defend the posting to this list saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts **are** relevant to this mail list.

106 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty.

27 to post URLs where one can see examples of different light bulbs

14 to post that the URLs were posted incorrectly, and to post corrected URLs.

3 to post about links they found from the URLs that are relevant to this list which makes light bulbs relevant to this list.

33 to concatenate all posts to date, then quote them including all headers and footers, and then add "Me Too."

12 to post to the list that they are unsubscribing because they cannot handle the light bulb controversey.

19 to quote the "Me Too's" to say, "Me Three."

4 to suggest that posters request the light bulb FAQ.

1 to propose new alt.change.lite.bulb newsgroup.

    143 votes for alt.lite.bulb.

By the way, for all those who may not know, the PNC Bank thing is the new name for the Garden State Arts Center. I figure maybe some people outside of New Jersey interested in this gig should know just in case.......and lo and behold, you don't have to worry about our fiercesome jughandles, for it is right off the Garden State Parkway, where every lane is the slow lane when you're going 85!

And for all the Joisey bashers out there, let me just remind you of the state slogan (both variations):

Welcome to New Jersey..........now get the fuck out. Welcome to New Jersey..........youse got a fookin' prawblum?!?!

Limited, indeed. Sounds more like a newsgroup naming >errorif there's an undercurrent so biased against two particular groups >:) Screw what they think. If I looked at the world like many a Mindcrime >do :), I'd be missing out on a whole heck of a lot of music.

Agreed. But there's certainly a constituency there who feels that progressive refers to the convergence of classical and jazzier themes with an elaborate rock arrangement. And that aggressive rock or metal doesn't belong under that rubric. That there IS a progressive metal, to be, is quite obvious. But since metal, since the early years of Sabbath, has been seen as somewhat bombastic, perhaps progressive metal DOES have a sense of redundancy about it.

    >> I think the people I'm speaking of come from a progressive ROCK background >> and AREN'T really willing to describe anything METAL as progressive. > >That's their shortsitedness (sp?)... To me it's not whether a band is >progressive or not, but whether the MUSIC is. One can take any genre and >make music in it which is progressive (does that make sense?) It's hard >to put into words, butKeith Emerson comes closest for me.

I understand what you're saying....it sounds like you're talking, primarily, about arrangement ideas. Now, a question: Are we speaking of length? Of number of distinct musical parts? How complex those parts are? How many stylistic switches one makes? I'd argue that all of those go into a meaningful definition of progressive, but a band like Faith No More, who's greatest strength is it's ability to switch up midstream and play in another of different styles. This, I think, is somewhat progressive. And I'm sure a few folks here are gonna wanna hang me in effigy for calling THEM progressive.

    >I was on Usenet when the number of newsgroups could just about fit on >ONE screen! Let's put it this way: I've heard it said that, as a >culture, Usenet doesn't scale very well :) I've learned to take a lot of >the shit on there for just what it is: shit. This is not to say there >isn't some signal amongst the noise.

I'll go for that. I work is research, you know, so I WILL go along with the notion that Usenet isn't a representative sample, if you will. But I also did have a somewhat well-known knock-down drag-out on the old a.m.p with a few folks who were arguing both that Rush isn't progressive and that Rush isn't any good, anyhow, so who gives a shit?

    >> What's Brand X? Progressive FUSION?! > >Sure! Why not? Again, for me, Fusion would refer to the genre(s) while >progressive would refer the structure of the song.

Actually, Fusion is a special case, since it is, by definition, a genre of music that rests at the meeting place of jazz and rock music. AND, essentially, requires a phenomenal amount of technical facility. A band like Weather Report is VERY progressive, but they play a kind of music that's fairly progressive at its root. Brand X just seems a little more fusion-sounding than progressive, as such, to me....and they generally get tagged as "progressive"....probably because of all the projects that the band remembers have done OUTSIDE of Brand X. Go figure....
