its not a magic eye thing. you also have to remember magic eye pictures are
repetitive, its so your eyes cross and still mend the same images together
and think you're looking at the same part, but really are looking at two
different parts of it. there IS something hidden however, and what it is
i'm not sure.. i dont think its the guy on the cover personally, it's
interesting to look at though, its a very faint image.

    Hi to all France jammers,

We will do 2 gigs in France this weekend, at saturday we will play in a

    Hello,
G3 tour dates are now up at http://www.g3tour.com/g3_tour.html
The tour is kicking off in Camden instead of Hartford. I think maybe I'll
get opening night tix... Oh, the line-up:

    Robert Fripp
    Kenny Wayne Shepherd
    Steve Vai
God... oops, I mean Joe Satriani

Somehow I don't think those jams at the end will be half as cool with
Kenny instead of Eric. Oh, well! I'll suffer...
And as far as I know all tickets for the PNC Bank Arts Center go
on sale May 3. Bracelets on May 1. No immediate pay day around there for
    me. Darn...

If I may be so bold as to break into the middle of all the Fates ranting - THIS SUCKS. Although, if I had to venture a guess, I'd say the brains behind the band is really the guitarist, Jorgi Tanna (is that his name?) Still, I think Alex Lifeson summed it up best - Edwin's voice has a certain degree of 'menace'. He's certainly one of the more versatile voices out there.

Any cab with decent speakers will sound good. There is some evidence to support that some of the new Mesa cabs (not the old ones with the metal grill) are more well designed to spread sound evenly. They have a slight slant to them that no other cab I've seen has (and I'm not talking about slant-top cabs... I know what those are). But you will get a great sound out of anything with good speakers. What to look for speaker-wise: Celestion Greenbacks (25 Watt speakers) sound good, but if you play loud consistantly, (that is, if you play live shows, and don't mic your cabs, but make them do all of the work) you might want something stronger. In this case I'd go with Celestion Vintage 30's if you can afford them (I am told that these are actually 60 watt speakers). Recenly I've heard great things from Peavey Sheffield speakers, as in the 5150 cabs. Worth checking out. When buying speakers (not cabs) you get what you pay for. When buying cabs, you get the name you pay for. > From: "Dan McCormack" <dmc@dreamt.org> > Subject: open-minded?

    > most of the Jammers are usually quick to dismiss punk as 'that crap' You have to understand... most people that like listening to shredding guitars, soaring melodies, complex drumming, and intricate odd time signatures/polyrhythms are going to gravitate away from punk. I really wil not entertain any arguments about how complex "Punk Band X" is, or how "Jimmybob can play all of Petrucci's stuff in his sleep, but he can't play Don't Speak, because that's the most diverse and intense chord workout known to man." It's cool to listen to whatever hits your ear in a positive way, whether that's rap, country, punk, or metal. I think, however, that some people have sticks up their asses when it comes to "This album sucks". That's a natural response, and slang for "I don't like it"... not saying "There is no redeemimng quality that any human being can find in this music". I don't want to live in a society where I HAVE to give a complex review of everything I dislike, just to have the permission not to like it. The only time this is an issue, is when an artist is just scraping by. You can really hurt someone financially by telling their entire fan base that they suck. All that's required to avoid this is to tag in "But don't take my word for it... make up your own mind" or something to that effect. Sadly, there are many followers out there who will not listen to something if someone they respect says it sucks.

    > Why is open-mindedness reserved for technically challenging music? It isn't, and never has been.

    > Why is music that doesn't take God (or John Petrucci, = > same difference :) to play automatically crap? No one has made this case. I think you're exaggerating your point.

On your question about guitar eq. I don't actually prefer just a head and a cab to get that great crunch sound. I prefer a combo of a good tube- driven effects processor with good power amp. Both guitarists in my band use this kind of setup. One guy has a Digitech 2101 as a preamp and a Mesa Boogie power amp (I'm not sure of the model number, cuz he just got it, but it is a tube power amp). He can get some great crunch out of that setup. Every time I have plugged into a straight into a Marshall amp I have been severely disappointed. I'm sure a Marshall would sound great with some extra toys to tweak it, but I've never gotten close to my ultimate sound straight into a Marshall. This same guitarist used to have a Boogie .22 caliber amp with the eq circuit on it, and that little fucker sounded great until it got dropped and broke all the tubes inside. One of those would probably be a lot better if you are tight on money. You have to make sure they have the eq on there, because some models don't. The .22 is basically a practice amp, so it has a speaker on it, but it sounds much better when you hook it up to a cab. Some other good effects processors besides the 2101 are the VuduValve and the Chameleon. The VuduValve smokes! Anyway, hope I helped you out.

I hate to admit it, but I've never heard any Fates stuff. I do, however, have every intention of picking up some of their CDs when I'm not so strapped for cash (mortgage payments suck ;). In the past, the consensus has seemed to be that one should start with Parallels. My question is, is that still true? Or has APSoG surpassed that album as the definitive first-time CD?

    Thanks for any insight...

Several times I've heard people say this about the new Queensryche CD: "If a band puts out the same kind of stuff every album, I would get bored...I'm glad that my favorite bands are progressing into new sounds and styles" (or some paraphrased version of that).

My question is, why isn't anybody out there bitching and moaning about the new Fates Warning? I mean, my god, they're still playing complex progressive shit. Some people have even compared it to I&W, which is <gasp> almost 5 years old! When are they gonna do something NEW?

My take on this is that a lot of people, no matter what they say, are pretty much reluctant to accepting change.

The difference in QR's case is that their change, as a lot of people see it (including myself), is not one of improvement - almost a REgression. Now remember, this is only the opinion of a number of people here and not a consensus.....

Fates Warning has changed, but not lately...I heard a small amount of Fates stuff pre-Symmetry, and it didn't do anything for me. I think its safe to say that they changed a LOT with PS - and that's when I began to enjoy them a LOT.

I definitely would not recommend APSoG as the first listen to Fates......I would go with the general consensus of getting Parallels first......APSoG is more of a concept-type thingy, and it may turn off a lot of people if that's what they hear first....

Here's another example - I enjoyed the old Metallica stuff (RtL, Kill 'Em All) when I was younger....then they "change"d a bit when And Justice came out.....but I definitely liked it better - it seemed more "musical" in a sense...the sound was different, but it was more "mature" it seemed to me (hard to explain). The music seemed more complex, more along the proggy side in a way. This was a change that *I* liked, but a lot of die-hard Metallica fans hated......

The basic point is....it seems that a lot of people here enjoy change that is toward the more complex and musical. Fates has done that with this album by incorporating all of this musically into one piece (hard to call it a song)....

When the change goes toward the more "basic", i.e., no shredding solos, or just plain lack of emotional impact that a lot of us are used to with some bands (including QR for me), then that's where the "This album sucks", "They're selling out" type comments come in........

hope this explains *something, even if its just the fact that I'm a know-nothing blowhard....
