Here's a simple 12-step program guaranteed to entrance you and stimulate
    cognitive activity..

(start by putting APSoG into your disc player - press play)

***Step One: listen to the thunder and the eerie guitar/keyboard theme...
note the theme for later reference.

***Step Two: is this NIN? what's with the timbre of the "verse" vocals? The
keyboard textures dominate here, and there are some cool background piano
    parts..

***Step Three: here we go! There's a nice chunky guitar riff to start this
section.. check out the little bass fill from 1:09 to 1:12.. interesting
change at 1:36 - turn up your stereos; what is the little girl saying at 1:46
    and 1:57 (and 3:09 and 3:21)?

***Step Four: intriguing arpeggiated chords begin this section.. the music
behind the vocals is rich with layers/textures - pay attention to it!
keyboards, great bass melodies, minimalistic cymbal poetry from Zonder, etc..
then suddenly - BAM! gotta love odd-time progmetal riffs!! The drums sound
fantastic.. Kevin's part is subtle here, but cool.

***Step Five: What AMAZING drumwork to begin step five!! I like the "space"
behind the vocals to begin the verse - very effective.. "let nothing bleed
into nothing" - these are interesting lyrics.. 2:15 shows Kevin in "Space Dye
Vest" mode, at least in terms of emotion. The connective drum part at 3:06
rules, followed by a cool thumping guitar riff - the drums don't let up!
Listen to the keyboard quickly pan left->right on each note.. that final
    chord hurts!!

***Step Six: great effect achieved by the opening guitar bends - this could be
a movie score.. I KNOW that bass riff is in 5/4! =) Very quiet samples at
    3:29, 3:36, 3:42, 3:47 - what's being said?!?! I love the keyboard sound in
the following part (behind the vocals). Cool key change at 4:26.. Here's the
first guitar solo - very understated - nice final triplet tho.. I like the
vocal "soliloquy".. what's that? the opening them, I believe, in the keyboard
(I think, this is only my 2nd listen) to close this section..

***Step Seven: Kevin comes in with that pulsing piano in the background,
behind another restatement of that opening theme on electric guitar.. that
piano background gives this a very "hectic" feeling.. Another cool odd-time
guitar/bass riff. Wow, vocals over this bizarre riff - this section will
require repeated listens to digest the rhythms... "let nothing bleed into
nothing" - there it is again! I love that line.. check out the bass at 2:43..

more cool keyboard textures at 3:38.. there's another sample here! I can make
out "I want you to do me a favor... <garbled something>... Just shoot me!
Shoot me!" 3:48 -> is this Lie by DT?

***Step Eight: Here's that cool rambling keyboard/piano background again -
it's very disconcerting.. some chanting/cheering in the background too -
what's the significance? Listen to the intensity build up to 0:48.. another
complex guitar/bass riff over some changing piano parts - requires digestion!
I love the way the guitar doubles the piano starting at 2:00..

***Step Nine: What's this? Major chords? Acoustic guitar ballad from Fates?
I love the line "writing letters in my head". Very poignant. The fretless
bass *really* works here - great idea! sort of blue murder-esque.. Ah,
distortion at 2:48.. A very tasteful solo, with the requisite harmony guitar
section.. A nice song - this could stand alone as a single..

***Step Ten: Pulsing lines from Kevin's keys usher this one in.. That harsh
key sound repeating on the offbeat - can't you just see a red warning light
flashing somewhere?.. this is merely a "connector" to..

***Step Eleven: A cool 7/4 (or 4/4 + 3/4) guitar riff (nice dissonant harmony
by Kevin), more great Zonder work.. time change - 9 beats to a phrase here..
Another time change! Zonder is really playing here! This entire section will
take some serious listening to sort out, rhythmically.. I *love* double cymbal
    crashes (2:44).. this part rocks!

***Step Twelve: Interesting introduction - clean guitar with a repeated-note
(w/ octave drop) theme.. Another cool keyboard sound from Kevin here - it
really adds a feeling of "depth" to the mix here.. Very emotional singing in
low register.. That PHAT bass starts up another 5/4 riff! Cool guitar
accompaniment - he staggers the power chords all over the beat here - reminds
me of the riff near the beginning of UaGM the way he toys with the rhythm..
that guitar note at 5:30 - chilling.. 5:35 brings back the opening clean
guitar theme.. note how each lyric phrase here ends positively, coinciding
with a nice sweet major chord - I like! the fading theme and the rain make a
    nice ending..

    then..........RRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!
    !!!

You have been rudely jolted out of introspection mode..

If you made it this far I applaud you. Comments are welcome. If you've got
an hour to spare, give my 12-step program a try - you may never be the same..

    cheers,
    -Neil.

On my first date we went to see "Crossroads". My priorities have always
been in order. Vai was phemon in the flick. The "classical" piece
Macchio plays to beat Vai was Vai. The blues riffs in the head-cutting
sequence and the rest of the movie were played by Ry Cooder. I'm
actually surprised Vai hasn't done more acting, he has as many facial
expressions as Jim Carrey if not more. To Macchio's credit he practiced
quite a bit to, at least to the untrained eye, look like he was actually
playing. Even to this guitarist he did a pretty good job with the
positioning. Some actors don't even bother. I spent every free moment of
the next six months surgically attached to my guitar. The fingers payed
    the price.

    Always constant, accurate and intense!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Later days.

    Hola Jammanoids,

Okay, am I like the _only_ one on the list that doesn't think the
new Fates disc is the greatest thing since PB&J? Not to say I don't like
it, cause I do, but so far I just don't think it's 'all that and a bag of
    chips'...

Here's my first impressions on it... where are the balls and
chunk? I mean, I keep hearing that such and such track is so incredible,
and I listen and I just don't get it. I _have_ been listening to the
thing non-stop since yesterday trying to get into it, but I'm not picking
up on very many 'hooks'. Course, I wasn't that fond of Parallels when I
first got it, but now I really get into that disc.

I guess the moral of this story is that you should read Dr. Mosh's
Fates' Listening Guide before you try to get into this band. If you
should ever find yourself becoming fond of the stuff, you'll never look
back, but it takes a while to sink in.

I'm gonna keep giving APSoG play in the ol' car CD player to and
from work, but if it doesn't start clicking good enough in the next day or
so I'm gonna just hafta pull out some other discs... Parallels comes to
mind, or I've always been partial to Chasing Time... I think 'Circles'
has got to be one of my favorite Fates songs right up there with 'Point of
    View'.

                                                            DrX

P.S. Oh hell, APSoG is in my car... guess I'll just pop the Beastie's
out of the changer and replace it with Parallels.

P.P.S. Now don't all you Fates fans start flaming me... I bought the
thing on release day... I've given it about 5 listens... it's growing on
me... I do like it, and I haven't listened to HitnF since I got APSoG...
:) I just don't know that it's ever going to impact me to the point
that the other Fates discs I have do.

the vox. Funny thing is, most parents complain that their children's
music is too heavy. My mom, on the other hand, thinks that much of my
music is "too folky" (Tori Amos, Duncan Sheik and Thanks to Gravity are
performers that I like alongside DT, Fates, QR, Rush, Yes) Oh well, can't

    Hi

Can someone please enlighten me about Queensryche? I really don't see why
they should be mentioned in the same sentence as DT.

First let me say this - I was 12 when their first ep came out, and I loved
it. Still do. I also loved and still love Warning & Rage for Order. After
that, they lost me. Mindcrime was ok - in fact I was crazy about it when it
came out, and I saw them open for Metallica that year('89) and thought they
kicked ass. Now, though, 8 years later, I don't care if I ever hear it
again. Then Empire, then Promised Land, then this new one - all crap.

    What am I missing?

I warn you - you're going to have a tough time justifying the likes of 'Jet
City Woman' & 'All I Want' - yeccch!

Thanks for your help in this,

    Chip

Just to make all you who took FOREVER in finding the Fates' CD -->

I found it at the first store I looked in (Hastings in Norman, OK). They
had 1 copy, despite having advertised their new release!
How can any store order just one copy of ANY new CD?!?!

Oh well, I listened to it while going for a little nightime drive in the
country. Pretty good listening experience. I was kind of expecting a
little more persistent heaviness and rock to it, but I still like it
after 1 listen. Very much different than any other Fates, or any other
    band for that matter.

What's up with that bell at the end of the song? Is it like a dream
ending and the alarm clock woke us up? Just curious of your comments.

    Later,
    Jon

P.S. - 40 RESPONSES in the top ten CD list of all time!! Great job
everyone. I'll take more requests through this weekend, but after
Sunday, I'm all done accepting lists, and will compile the overall list,
posting the tops on my home page, with a link to the ENTIRE ranking file.
    CHEERS and happy CD listening!

You know, I was in the mood to play Quake today. I started up the game
with the second Mission Pak to try to defeat the demented minds of Rogue
Software, and completely forgot that a.) APSoG was in my CD-ROM drive, and
b.) Quake plays CD audio from any music CD in the CD-ROM drive.

The music is almost perfect! Somehow I ended up will all the dark tracks
for the levels, and the softer stuff was played between levels. You know,
maybe Fates Warning should talk to id Software and do the soundtrack for
    Quake 2...

    >Oooooohhhhhhhh, you're in for a treat. Coolest thing I've ever been a part of!
    >The solos are amazing, too - each guy takes one on his instrument, and they
    >prove that KISS is much more than just good marketing.
Actually, the only really impressive solo is Ace's. He and Paul
are the two who make the most difference (I think). Gene's "solo" is just
his fake blood routine. It gets old after awhile. It's nice to see that
another Dream Theater fan admits to liking Kiss, but I wouldn't call it
"the coolest thing I've ever been a part of" (and I haven't been a part of
    many cool things, either).

    >Not too wierd, I saw the Eagles and (i doubt you'll believe this) Pink
    >Floyd with my Dad (my first concert... Alot of the ones I have gone to
    >since have paled in comparison...).
I think it's kind of funny that one of my favorite artists (until
fairly recently), Kiss, influenced one of my father's favorite artists,
Garth Brooks, when Brooks was a teenager. Kind of ironic. My father would
never go to a concert with me though. My mother and I are much closer in
    interests.

Since when was this a Dream Theater and Fates Warning list? And do
you want to be the one to screen all of the "applicants" and current list
members who have less than three Fates Warning albums?

Did anybody else notice that Metal Blade misspelled "Dream Theater"
in the advertisements for the new Fates Warning CD? They shouldn't be
making errors of that kind. Maybe Sam Goody and Musicland have excuses,
    but not Metal Blade.

Waiting to be kicked off the list because I only own _Chasing Time_,

Someone asked if Genesis had a new lead singer?

    The answer is...YES!!!

The guy's name is Ray Wilson. According to Paperlate,(Genesis' version of
Ytsejam) they are currently working on their next album.

    Hope this helps!

No, it's relevant. I'm exaggerating to make a point. My point is
that I don't believe that most people who want really complex, changing
music are going to listen to punk... not because they're unwilling to open
their minds and listen to a different form of music, but because to many of
them, it is experience that leads them to developing a taste for the more
obscure and complex. When the point was made, some days ago, that "Don't
Speak" is a song that can stump someone that can play everything that JP
plays in his sleep, I found the concept to be memorably ridiculous. I don't
base technical difficulty on what I like and don't like, so let me cut you
off before you or anyone else attempts to take that stance. I judge it from
understanding technique. My understanding leads me to believe that the
tempo and number of chord changes per measure in a song like "Don't Speak"
shouldn't pose a problem to someone who can flawlessly play TTT or UGM,
rhythms and leads. It's possible that you can focus only on guitar soloing
and be unable to handle chord changes, but then there's no way you'll play
    most DT rhythms well.
Your intentions in your post that I refer to are what is irrelevant.
I'm not telling you that you DON'T know someone that can play everything
that JP plays, but CAN NOT play Don't Speak. I'm merely addressing a point
before it can be brought up (i.e. "Well, some punk is harder to play than
prog metal. What about Rip's friend that can play all of Petrucci's stuff
    but can't play Don't Speak?").
I disagree with the belief that people who dislike certain kinds of
music are closed minded. I have listened to a lot of rap, and been exposed
to a great deal of country music. These genres rarely appeal to me in any
way, shape or form. Punk is similar, with a few exceptions. Every now and
then I hear a cool punk song (and I dig something about the tone of the No
Doubt chick's voice, though I could care less what she is saying, and am not
entertained by the overall musicality). I think that the amount of money
I've invested in the 400+ cds that i own speaks something of an open mind.
There aren't that many DT albums or Prog Metal albums of similar content.
Just because I dislike punk, doesn't mean that I'm cutting myself off. I
never signed any document saying that I will never hear something someday
that I'll like. The day just hasn't come where I've come into contact with
a lot of punk, rap, or country music that I find to be enjoyable. I have an
open mind... I just don't feel that I should have to compromise my tastes,
and listen to things that I don't enjoy, just to maintain that status. I do
    not follow that path.

    >you can view this post as a thrown gauntlet, but in all, thats how i viewed
    >the aforequoted.

I apologize if I've offended you. It's simply something that stuck
out in my mind, and was a useful point to bring up in support of my
contention. The goal was not to smite you, but rather to bolster my own
point. It's good debate technique to presuppose that someone will take
issue with what you say, and thus, to cover all your bases before you speak.
That's all I was trying to do.
