    Hi all Ytse-jammers!

Just wanted to say that I saw J.P guitar clinic in Stockholm, Sweden
last night. He played some stuff from the upcomming album. It was just
awesome! I can tell you.... its going to be worth to wait for the new
album! He said that they were going into the studio in the beginning of
May and the album will be out in September(hopefully).

    Cheers..

    Anders

This is something I used to post to the Jam every once in a while for new Fates listeners and potential Fates listeners.

    ************************************** * The Fates Warning Listening Guide * * by Dr. Mosh * * drkhoe@gmsnet.com * **************************************

So you've just bought Parallels by Fates Warning since you've heard all those guys on the mailing list and newsgroups talk about Fates Warning. You've never actually heard any Fates but you listen to plenty of Dream Theater and Rush.

You rush home to hear the CD, put it on, hit the play button, you don't hear anything too exciting, you think, it'll get better! You listen to the whole album and on the whole you weren't too impressed. You think to yourself, "Those guys are all smoking something if they think this is good stuff". So you opt to sell it or give it to a friend since it wasn't that great.

Ah, my dear friend, perhaps you haven't given it a chance!

Welcome to the Listening Guide. This guide will hopefully get you on your way to becoming one of the few but dedicated Fates Warning fans.

Let's start off by answering a few questions.

    1. Is Fates Warning like Dream Theater?

Yes and no. They definitely have their own progressive style. Some of the textures of their songs are the same but Fates Warning is generally thought of to be a darker more brooding band, sometimes bordering on depressive.

    2. What album should I start with if I listen to a lot of Dream Theater with lots of time changes and such?

For those who love the cutting edge progressive, get the new album, A Pleasant Shade of Gray with Kevin Moore on keyboards. Perfect Symmetry is a good substitute which also has Kevin Moore on keys.

    3. What are their earlier albums like?

Night on Brocken is more of a Maidenish type sound while Spectre Within they begin to break into the new mold. Spectre Within and Awaken the Guardian are more towards metal with progressive tendencies.

    4. Why the change from Awaken the Guardian to No Exit?

They replaced singer John Arch with Ray Alder and thus their style began to change. The change from No Exit to Parallels is because of Mark Zonder adding his influence to the music.

    5. So how come I don't like Parallels?

In my opinion, Parallels is one of the greatest CD's made by any band. It's not the in your face time changes that are astounding, but as one person put it, it's a musician's music. The way the instruments blend and contrast, the way the songs are arranged, the very minor key changes.

    6. Which album is the most progressive?

Many have argued this question but a large percentage will tell you Perfect Symmetry is, but with A Pleasant Shade of Gray released, this is most definitely the most progressive album out by any band in existence.

    Some facts:

    * The current members are: Jim Matheos - Guitar Joey Vera - Bass Ray Alder - Vocals Mark Zonders - Drums Kevin Moore plays keys on APSoG and PS

    * The albums: Night on Brocken Spectre Within Awaken the Guardian No Exit Perfect Symmetry Parallels Inside Out Chasing Time A Pleasant Shade of Gray

    * Current record label: Metal Blade * Where they hail from: New Haven, CT

Interesting thought. The brand new Obituary CD has about 40 minutes of music on it (as usual), but three (3!) full-length videos on it, and a bunch of other cool shit (tour pictures, home-video footage, etc).

No, I'm not kidding. We go every year. It's odd when you share a taste in music with someone thirty-five years your senior. It's even more odd when he's your father..."

Not too wierd, I saw the Eagles and (i doubt you'll believe this) Pink Floyd with my Dad (my first concert... Alot of the ones I have gone to since have paled in comparison...). Nothing too crazy about sharing musical tastes with someone 35 years older, or your father. Now I think it was a trip if your dad listened to DT, damn that would be cool, since then he might pay your way to go see them in the East (I'm from the left coast, the best coast!)

    OK...more thoughts.

Am I the only one who doesn't think this song is just ONE SONG? It just seems like a concept album to me. I would've considereed it one song had there only been one track on the CD.

I just love pt. 1!!! First time I heard it, I got chills after hearing Ray's voice. Thought he sounded very "religious." Can't explain it. But the opening vocals by Ray conveyed something very heavenly.

Pts. 6 and 12 will probably be my favs after listening to it many more times.

Also, based on the packaging, I know view the songs as "gray" when I hear the songs. I don't know. Just dark and gloomy. If this was the purpose of fates, then they were successful. Another thing I loved about this CD is that it just sounded original. When I bought QR's HITNF, none of it sounded original. Now of course I lvoe that album. But for APSOG, it just sonded like something I had never heard before. And that's what I expect from a new CD.

Don't know what else to say...it just kicks ass!

True. It's just too bad that most prog fans don't give it a chance and = find out why some people like it before dissing it. This CD kicks ass!! It was even worth driving around for what seemed like hours, checking four stores to see if they had it. I like the fact that they used more keyboards than they have in the past, but Mr. Moore made some parts sound a little too much like DT. But this might be the best change FW has made between albums in years. I can even forgive the fact that there was some crappy malternitive-type, overly-compressed distortion effect on Ray's voice in part two. Hello? I don't see Trent Reznor's name on this CD anywhere, do you? Someone help me try to comprehend this - how can one be all psycho over DT, but either not like FW or think they're "just OK?" I think we should make it a requirement that a potential subscriber own at least three FW albums before they're allowed on this list.

It's a damn shame so many people are having problems finding APSoG. We must stop Metal Blade from promoting bands like the Goo-Goo Dolls and make them put more effort into Fates, who were probably their first cash cow anyway. Do I smell petition potential? Debbie Seeger DSeeger@juno.com

i find the last comment irrelevant. (when dont i?:) i posted the original post you're retorting in it, and my intentions were in no way to draw people to listen to the music, or arise arguements over it. it was simply to get people to open their teeny little prog minds up and realize the band at least has talent. it was not brought onto the floor to be argued over, and not in the least to be antagonized. i'd at least prefer you entertain the arguement as opposed to mocking it. you can view this post as a thrown gauntlet, but in all, thats how i viewed the aforequoted. ~Rip
