Jammerz-
Remember when Mike Bahr mentioned that the new album would be nothing like we
think it will? Well, combine that comment with the proposed 60-minute album
(leaving some extra space) and what do you get...? DT multimedia.. think
about it..

Yes, to a degree. I prefer Celestion 85's or 90's, personally, but only
Celestions - I didn't like the Sheffields.
As far as cabs go, my main one is actually a Peavey Butcher 4-12 from
1986, with 85 watt Celestions. My other guitarist just bought a Boogie
Recto 4-12, with 90 watt Celestions, and it sounds great. As far as the
price, if we didn't have an endorsement, he wouldn't have bought it,
because they are expensive - but not much more than Marshalls, and the
Boogies are built like tanks.
I Like the VHT stuff I've heard, as far as heads go (I use a rack system
myself), and the Boogie Dual Rectifier. Soldanos sound pretty good, too.

I like both the VooDu and the Chameleon, with the VooDu getting the edge
because of the tubes. I personally use a Marshall JMP - 1 Midi preamp, a
Rocktron Pro - Q, an Alesis Quadraverb, and a Tube Works MosValve power
amp. I may be getting a Boogie 2:90 power amp soon, depending on how it
changes the tone.
I haven't found a head I like as well as my rack, but the Pro Q makes
the big difference.
Try everything, buy what you like, and you'll buy something different in
a year - that how guitarists are!
And that's my opinion on the subject.

Oooooohhhhhhhh, you're in for a treat. Coolest thing I've ever been a part of!
The solos are amazing, too - each guy takes one on his instrument, and they
prove that KISS is much more than just good marketing.

There you have it, folks. Call the SWAT teams. Rip has finally gone
postal! No offense to any Ytsejammers employed by the US postal service

Weren't CDs around $30 when they first appeared circa early 83-84? Then
again, I didn't buy into the whole CD concept till two years ago :)

ok, I'll bite. IMO, Awake tears Inside Out's head off and shits down its
neck :)
An aside: My take on cia9itg is the guys have been able to take an
already complex enough song and show how straightforward it was to apply
the elements of industrial, alternative, whatever to it. They pretty
much capture the essence of the whole scene in one song! Nothing against
the genres, there are some great tunes coming out. It's just most of the
stuff sounds like something I'd heard before, only now there are better
effects processors to run it through.
I'm must laugh, though, when I hear comparisons of Awake to Images &
Words. I mean, come on, CIAW is so fucking heavy. That solo section in
the middle? Hello? James' voice? Help me... John's bass on Scarred? See
ya... John's guitar SOUND just seems to get meaner and meaner, as if
that's a good thing :) I'd like to Ibanez make a guitar for JP that
resembles a dragon's mouth and with the ability for flames to shoot of
out it, at the command of a foot pedal, perhaps.
Oh yeah, I think I&W is a great disc...
Matter of fact, I think I'm gonna head down to Strawberries right now
and pick up Awake!!! :)
<sometime later>
Ok, here's what I found out after my little lunchtime excursion into
excessive extension of credit:
-> The cute brunette still works there.
-> They DON'T HAVE the new Fates in yet. Guess what, I'm actually able
to wait.
-> They DO HAVE plenty of stuff I hear people say is hard to find such
as:
---> A dozen or so Savatage
---> Marillion's Brave and Six of One
---> Awake (well, 1 less :), ACOS, I&W
---> Loads of Steve Morse
---> Plenty of Fates' Warning
-> Strawberries is in fact not going out of business.
-> The cute brunette still works there :)
This is all from memory. I'll bring a list of groups to check stock on.
Ok, here's what I picked up (in case someone decides to cover my life
story :):
Dream Theater - Awake (14.99)
Steve Morse - High Tension Wires (tough call, but this one was only
11.99)
McCoy Tyner - Jazz Classics (7.99)
Roland Kirk - Jazz Masters 27 (12.99)
Jude Cole - A View From 3rd Street (gotta get the obligatory cuddle
disc :)
I have a question for the ytseGurus. On the protective plastic sheathing
of the Awake disc, there's a label which says:

Were there other, commercially released, versions of Awake? Is this disc

QR did change, sure it isn't OM, but I feel that it is still good.
I feel FW has changed on every album. If you listen to every FW album in
succession there are many changes. I mean the first album to me sounds
like Iron Maiden. And on their new one they have taken prog and technical
and all that jazz to a whole new level. I just have this need to get out
of work and go home and listen to APSOG again... I guess the new Dokken
which I also bought yesterday will just have to wait a few weeks or
months to get some airplay...
I just wonder when Mike Bahr's Precious Things arrives, what will happen...

Well, like seemingly most of the list, I picked up "A Pleasant Shade of
Grey" yesterday. I've only listened to it once, so I haven't really fully
absorbed the record, but, at first listen, I'll say this: I like "Parallels"
and "Inside Out" better. I know, I'm poppy -- not progressive or whatever.
I'd peg it, at the moment, about where "No Exit" is, a cut below the last
two albums. It's still a good one, don't get me wrong, and subject to
revision in either direction. But while everyone here is absolutely raving
about the CD, I'm sitting here, thinking it's about average for a Fates
Warning disc.
Ah well, I'm always the weird one...
Five Gratuitous CD's:

1. Fates Warning: A Pleasant Shade of Grey
2. The Offspring: Ixnay on the Hombre
3. Metallica: Ride The Lightning
4. Rush: Hold Your Fire

You know the jam has suddenly turned into total brainwash. After I finish

there's little chance of that cuz not yet in Panama, and they never have
Fatez stuff here.... I guess I'll have to order it. Kinda makes me want to

I agree totally that people should make other boots besides Dream Theater- I
love hearing Dream Theater boots- no doubt but my vote goes for a Savatage
or Queensryche one. Think about it- I'd love to hear early Savatage demos
that were never released, Zach Stevens doing old 'Tage songs, and rare live
stuff and for Queensryche, anything from them would work. Although, firstly,
I'd like to see someone make a Savatage disc.

Okay sorry if I am repeating this story but too good not to mention again.
Supposedly (about 84% sure) Derek was asked to tour with YES as Rick Wakeman
quit two days before the start of their European tour. They wanted to catch
Derek before DT went back to the states but missed him, still they pleaded
with him, but he said he was flattered but his obligation to DT obviously
takes precedent. Pretty damn funny I thought. Take the time.

I have to disagree with Mike Bahr when he says that the
two bands are, in essence, the same band, with the major
difference being lyrical content. In my opinion, DT is waay
more wank-y than Fates. Fates are much more focused, and
much less flashy. It is very rare that Fates go off on a
blow-out section where everyone is whaling, where DT does
this quite often. Don't get me wrong, I like DT
but Fates hits a spot within me that DT could never ever come
close to. I just don't hear such a similarity. Sorry.
Pat, I got to Best Buy at about 10:45am, and there were several
copies still there. Well, at least two or three.

Hello,
I got this really cool new album, it's got some great keyboard
stuff on it and some really intense rhythms. I think you've heard of the
band: INXS. hehe... The next person who posts a review of APSoG without
properly marking it in the subject is going to force me to subject the
jam to an INXS album review. Six days till the new Cheap Trick!!!! One
month until Prunella Scales! Woo-hoo!
Oh, and D-Man, I know there's more than one CD store in B-town,
you're just not looking hard enough. I'm sure Pure Pop would have the new
Fates, right next to the Nitzer Ebb and Sinead albums... :)
Yes Swifty, the new Shining will be cool. But better than
Kubrick's? That's going to be a tough one. May I remind you of Mr.
Stephen King's past directorial work: Maximum Overdrive. Not exactly high
quality... On a related note, does anyone know when Night Flier is due
for release? Or is this gonna be straight to video?
Add the Moody Blues to the extended list of the concerts I will
be attending this summer. I'll be the 22 year old guy in the Megadeth
t-shirt sitting with his 58 year old dad. No, I'm not kidding. We go
every year. It's odd when you share a taste in music with someone
thirty-five years your senior. It's even more odd when he's your
father...

Count me in on this one. Two things are bred into my blood as a New
Englander of Canadian descent: love the Red Sox, love the Habs. All that
and I have to live in the New York metropolitan area... :P I practically
cried when the Habs didn't make the playoffs last year. A truly sad
sight. But I think those three goals in the first period the other night
were even more sad...
Sorry to add some non-Fates content, but I only own Parallels and
I have never been able to listen to the whole thing. Those triggered
drums are painful to my ears. Flame and die...
