    hi ytsejammers

i just got several items this morning in the mail from Synphonic ...
if you havent heard of it, it is a mail order place carrying over 3000
    progressive titles!!!

    i got :

            FM _Black_Noise_ (Canada)
            Spock's Beard _Beware_Of_Darkness (US)
            Anglagard _Hybris_ (Sweden)
            Par Lindh Project _Gothic_Impressions_ (Sweden)
            Midian _Soul_Inside_ (Italy)

            and Pendragon _The_Jewel_

im listening to FM right now because i read in Rush's Signals liner notes
that the electronic violinist on "Losing It" was from FM ... there is definitelyan electric violin but i think it might be someone else (maybe they changed
    line ups between '84 and '94 ??)

the Midian disk is supposed to be like DT with a violin i think ...

this FM disk totatlly kicks ass!!@!!!!!!!

man i dont want to go to class because i'll have to stop listening!

anyways ... any of you jammers that live in Toledo, OH and can get WXUT 88.3FM
the campus station, be sure to listen to my show on saturday 8-10pm!!!!!!!!

    thanks

Actually, I've been using the same 4-12 cabinet with Celestion G12K -
85's in it for eleven years now - and I don't exactly play quietly!
Celestions from the late seventies had a rep for not holding up, but all
of the ones form the eighties are OK, as far as I know. I would NEVER
    recommend 25 w speakers in a high power environment (i.e. > 50w) ,
because you're just asking to blow them...

EV's are too clean, anyway. :)

Someone in the last jam said that the new Fatez made excellent music
    for Quake-ing. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure you're right!

This reminded me of something that happened a few weeks ago. I had
been listening to Eric Johnson's "Venus Isle" in my cd-rom drive and
forgot that it was in the drive when I started playing Quake.
You know, there is something REALLY sick and twisted about listening
to Song For Lynette while ripping shamblers in half with the super
    nail gun. :)

Also, someone said that they listen to Duncan Sheik. I think his
"Barely Breathing" song is excellent. I haven't really heard much
more of the album. How is the rest of the album?

wow. that sucked. how'd my post show up thrice. after i serve my 2 minute roughing minor, i promise i'll come out hard and forecheck better.

speaking of new albums, anyone else noticing the hendrix albums being re-released? if you get a shot, pick one of them up. they're really nice. my "electric ladyland" is quite impressively done.

before i head off, i thought i'd leave a little trivia in your heads.

can anyone tell me what the following bands have in common: -van halen -heart -bela fleck and the flecktones

    peace out.

I find it acceptable yet odd that it took a lot of you time for Fates in general to sink in. I can see how that is possible, but I just must be weird because I got into them right away on the first listen of their stuff, which is rare for a new group for me. Believe it or not I bought Fates originally only because I saw their name in the thank yous for all DTs albums. I figured they had to be good. I then bought all their albums (except I still can't find No Exit or Awaken the Guardian - I feel so deprived) within the time period of a couple months. That's a lot to digest. I'm just saying in this post that it's strange how they are one of the few bands I got into right away when that is not typical for Fates. I must be weird or something.

They weren't too happy with Frank when he left. I don't know all the details though. Joe on the other hand didn't want to leave, but he couldn't support his family while staying in the band. Which is why everyone should buy all their albums so they'll get rich and he can come back and they can hit us with the Joe&Joey twin bass attack from hell.

Ben Mink (the electric violinist in question) basically has had two jobs concurrently in the past 20 or so years. One is as a session guy, doing stuff like Signals, and maybe some FM stuff. His other, more prominent job, however, is playing strings and piano and whatever else he can get his hands on for k.d. lang.

    No, I don't know why I know that. :)

Hello Dreamers, Maybe this is something interessting or new to some of you. I did an interview with JP and MP during their short new-music-trip to europe and John told me they have actually written Metropolis Pt II but it's 25 minutes long. In his words: Maybe we overdid it. By the way, Mike told me, his wife will give birth to his first child in May. She lets him pick the name and if it's a girl he likes to call her Melody. If it's a boy his name will be Maximum Lennon Portnoy ---> Max

I would die to have one of the european shows on tape, but I have nothing to trade, I think. If somebody can help me, please mail me.

I have heard a track called "Freak" from the new one... as will anyone else who has the latest issue of Metal Hammer...

Fuckin' great track with Bruce showing he has learnt how to sing again... If ya wanna hear Maiden circa "Piece Of Mind" with a nineties fuck-hard edge to it, then Bruce's new on looks like being a stormer... & the track I heard wasn't one of the Adrian Smith ones either, so there must be even better to come on the album...

Today the cd-salesman pointed out "Threshold" for me, the album Extinct Instinct. It's heavy, but very nice. I don't know much yet about the band. They're English, and one of the guitar players is also the producer, which you can hear. Keyboard work is awesome too. Give it a listen.

Well, I guess I'm going to have to repeatedly go back and enjoy the brunette at Strawberries until the disc arrives. Or I could go and do something logical like pick it up at Tower. Whadya know, there is a positive side to the disc not being in stock after all :)

In the mean time, Steve Morse's "High Tension Wires" is passing the time quite nicely. I wanted to thank whoever mentioned it, uh, 400 or so jams ago :) I remember several mentioning it and it came in handy when deciding between the many Morse discs there, not that I'd be disappointed with any of them; but it's nice to start near the top :)

To those of you into Steve Morse and especially HTW, I'd highly recommened "Stand Up." Some very similar sounds. Chris P might even find the country rock parts bearable :) Oh yeah, Eric Johnson jams with him on a song or two...

I hear something that very resembles part of a Steely Dan song (off Katy Lied?) on "Looking Back" starting around 2:05. Anyone else hear this?

And for the bonus question, can anyone (without searching the web :) name one of the two fairly well-known guitarists that appear on Katy Lied besides the regulars (i.e. NOT Skunk Baxter)?

I just recieved an advanced copy of the new Bruce Dickinson album due June 3rd and Adrian Smith helped write the tunes and it rules and I love it and I keep saying "and" and if Mr. Newberry would like to email me and ask questions about it, that would be cool.

Boy am I pissed. I went to three malls and about 8 different stores, and couldn't find a copy of APSoG! I go into the HMV in one mall and ask if they have it, and they go "Not at this location, I doubt it, I've never heard of 'em". I go into another HMV at a different mall, and it was the first store that actually had anything at all by FW (it seems in the last year everything by Fates has disappeared from all the stores near me!!!). So I asked them if they have it, told the bitch it came out on Tuesday, and she goes "No, it's been delayed until the 29th, but we have a couple on order".

What the fuck is this? Does anyone else know if the release date is the 29th in Canada? I think they're just fucking incompetent idiots (no offense to Bafu). I'm so sick of places that carry no prog. Some of these stores didn't even have any DT in stock for god's sake. I still have to go fucking downtown to the big fucking stores on Yonge St. to find anything in this city. Jeez, I thought we were supposed to be more accepting of things that aren't mainstream here in Canada. There's room for all walks of life here, EXCEPT prog listeners!

I did find it interesting that when I asked the chick at that one place that is getting copies of the album, she didn't go "Fates Who?" and I didn't need to repeat the name of the band or the album title! Woohoo! She was still a stupid ugly bitch though. :)

Oh, I did get the new Queensryche, and a couple of songs were really bad, as I expected, but there are a couple of good songs (my favourite after a few listens is definately "You"). But I do think the album is a regression from their previous albums, and it certainly won't be getting rotation in my CD player the way all their other albums are.

I can understand them writing 3 or 4 songs like this (I would love that), but filling up an entire album with them? What the fuck's up with that? A couple of the songs (Get a Life, etc.) are just terrible. After all the reviews I've read here, it was a little better than I expected. Still sounds like grunge though, I hear a lot of Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Pearl Jam in some of the songs. Fuck. I can't believe I'm actually mentioning those bands in the same breath as Queensryche.

Anyway, the point of this message is: ***FUCK!***

    :)

did you ever think, hey, dream theater was nice enough to use a sound byte from Conan O'Brien's show in one of their songs (scarred), maybe if he knew about it (which he most likely doesn't), he'd get them to play on his show. that would be pretty friggin' cool. topic #2: i was home this weekend for spring break, and was brousing through my dad's cd's, somehow he had a Bad English cd. remember them, they had john waite, and neil schon and jonathan cain from Journey, they had that song "when i see you smile". anyway, i was reading the liner notes and their drummer was Dean Castronovo!!! Ozzy's freakin' drummer! that's pretty funny. that's a funny looking resume: Bad English, Ozzy Osbourne.
