I just made a little prog sampler tape for my brother at college and i
though you guys might be interested in hearing some of my opinions. Please
feel free to set me straight about any bogus info or stuff you don't agree
with. Also, all the stuff on here (unless otherwise noted) is very
recommended. If you have any questions I'm here.
for your information, my bro is already a big DT fan and his handle is
AnalogKid if that tells you anything.

well the tape is finished. Here's a track list along with my personal
comments that are sure to make reading this more enjoyable. You might want
to print this out if possible for future reference.
Side one:
Extreme: Everything Under the Sun 21:39
yep that's right it's the "More Than Words" guys. surprisingly, III sides
is a pretty cool album. This song is by far the highlight though. This
song kicks sooooo much butt that i figured i'd use up half of one side just
so you could hear it. All four members of the band sing, so be ready for
some neato vocal harmonies, and they use a real piano, a real string
section, and a real horn section.
Enchant: Open Eyes 7:34
I'm very impressed with these guys. probably tied for my favorite of the
Magna Carta bands with Shadow Gallery. Their drummer is almost as wicked
as
MP and their guitarist is really funky.
Superior: Why? 9:21
These guys absolutely rule. Aptly named "Piano Butt-Prog" by yours truly,
they have been described as what would happen if Pantera hired Yanni. This
song gives a pretty good scope of the different types of music they play.
Also, this would get my vote as one the songs MTV should play on the grind.
Try tapping your foot to this stuff! I'd love to see the confused looks
on those people's faces. Superior also features fellow jammer and all
around nice guy Bernd Basmer on guitars. Although not quite as fast or
proficient as the likes of JP, he can write a mean song. They are quite
possibly my second favorite band, although after DT I try not to have
"places"
Fates Warning: Monument 6:12
I don't think you ever heard these guys so here's their "signature" song
that everyone associates fatez with. Kinda like PMU with DT except that
this is actually one of FW's better songs. They've been around a long time
and have mellowed out quite a bit, as this song demonstrates.
Marillion: Warm, Wet Circles 4:18
I haven't heard much of Marillion, but what I have heard has been awesome.
Very mellow stuff, and the vox sound a lot like Phil Collins. They've been
around forever, and toured with DT a couple times I think.
Veni Domine: The Chronicle of the Seven Seals (Excerpt) 2:14
It's a 20 minute song, and I'm not really impressed with it. It has its
moments, but the reason I threw it on is because this guy's voice is
uncannily similar to the lead singer of a band we all know and love. I'll
let you figure it out.
Well that's the end of side one, clocking in at 51:18. How I managed that
on a 100 minute tape is beyond me.
Side Two:
Dream Theater: Only a Matter of Time 6:36
Kevin Moore's finest lyrical effort ever. I should probably send you a
copy of the lyrics. Very cool. The bad part is that the lyrics are sung by
Charlie Dominici. He is actually a darn good singer, but just don't
compare him to KJ. You should really buy this album.
Lemur Voice: Deep Inside 9:29
The lyrics are cool. Trust me. Don't even try to figure out what the words
are though, or you might hurt yourself. LV features jammer Marcel Coenen
and he is a mean guitarist. He has a tendency towards pinch harmonics, so
I could listen to him all day. The whole disc is really good and can be
ordered from the same place that I got my SG and WM trib from (do you even
listen to those anymore? Cause i could probably find a place for 'em if you
wanted to send them back).
Jason Becker: End of the Beginning 11:42
It is a little longer than it should be, but the mere fact that this song
was recorded is a miracle. JB has ALS (The same thing Stephen Hawking has)
so by the time he wrote this he was well beyond the point of being able to
play it. He just put it into his computer and had his buddies play it for
him. A lot of people say that they cried and stuff when they heard it, but
I don't really see where they're coming from. I just think it's a really
nifty song.
Altura: Alone 10:45
These guys are in the middle of the pack among the Magna Carta bands. They
have tons of potential, but sometimes I feel like they're just trying too
hard. Don't get me wrong though, this song kicks my butt all over the
place.
Angra: Holy Land 6:23
Angra is a brazilian band, so that seems to add an extra element into their
songs, especially this one. I like to call their style "Happy speed
metal." The singer is really good, although on this track he sounds like a
girl. This song doesn't showcase any of their many talents, but it's still
my fave song on the album. I think of it as just a fun song.
Al DiMeola: Splendido Sundance 4:52
I'll just let you decide on this one, but keep in mind that he's doing all
that crazy stuff on an accoustic! incredible.
Galactic Cowboys: I'm Not Amused (excerpt) 1:46
These guys are ok, and I hear that their other albums are better than the
one I have. This song is actually pretty cool, but that's all the room I
had on the tape so you hear the cow noise, a chorus, and half of a
harmonica solo.

so that makes the grand total 1 hour, 42 minutes, and 51 seconds on a 100
minute tape. I should go into editing.

not at all, in fact, i would say this is the furthest album they've done
from even flowing all in the same vein. as opposed to being outside looking
in on one thing, the approach to this was more being inside looking out at
EVERYTHING, and no one direction was taken.. i guess that's the whole
concept and flowing theme if any. nonetheless, a great album :)

I agree 100000000%!! The guy does something to a lyric which few people
can do: he gets inside of it, harnesses the emotion, and let's it rip or
let's it flow, depending on the context. His voice can turn on a dime,
giving a song a whole different character than what one might anticipate.
Anyone that is lucky enough to take voice lessons from him would be
leading a truly charmed existence.

Van Halen debate going on.
as for Gary Cherone being booted, news to me.
as for Van Halen being this band for party songs only, if you look at
the Post-David Lee Roth era, is that true? songs like "Right Now", "Mine All
Mine", "Don't Tell Me (What Love's Got to Do)" and other songs would seem to
contradict this point.
and, finally, as for musical taste, it's just that, taste. some like
it, some don't.

To the person who wanted me to explain my position on bootlegs..here goes.
True, people do buy the bands studio albums first. No one in their right
mind would pay 20-30 bucks for a bootleg before getting their studio version
but say, someone goes out and buys Mind Control, wouldn't they be more
likely to buy their next album especially if they liked the bootleg. I'm not
saying it never steals the money out of artists mouths because some people
may hate the boots they have and not buy their next. Don't feel I'm being an
asshole about this because I'm trying to explain my point of view clearly
and have no problem doing so with anyone. If you have any other ?'s, feel
free to ask.
About Warrior Soul, everyone has a right to their opinion and I am trying to
get some sound samples up on my page so people don't have to worry about
liking or disliking Warrior Soul. I didn't mean to sound like your opinion
is invalid or anything because everyones opinion is important to me as long
as its not through flaming (which you didn't so I have no problem explaining
myself). WS might sound like LA Guns to some- I think they don't that much
but like they always say, opinions are just that, opinions.

Hey Jeremy! I don't want to seem like an idiot, but what did you mean by the "crumble" part of that statement? Frank is one of my favorites, but I never got to see him in concert. I do own all 6 "You Can't Do That..." sets, and I never heard Scott screw up much on those, or for that matter, on any of the boots I've heard with him playing.

or it could also be the noise from television. i don't know how to explain this technically, but you know the sound on boots of MTV Unplugged (queensryche, for example)? there's kind of a background noise involved, and that's what i hear when KevMo's samples are playing...

The main thing (IMO) about studying in USA is that a person can reach a degree sooner than in his/her home country. It's easier... At least to get a degree. I don't know about Master degree, but a girl who was studying in USA(from my county) said something like this: It's easier to get a degree in the States... So...
As far about grunge and other stuff(musical directions)... My first rock band that I listened to was G'N'R, followed by Motley Crue, Poison and such... I never listened to Kiss... :))))) Then the Nirvana was introduced(I was 15 years old), and I started with grunge, which I like quite a lot, especially Peral Jam. Parallely(sorry for spelling) I was listening to Metallica, and after about 1/2 a year started with Iron Maiden... Not to mention that I also listen to classics... I prefer A. Vivaldi, although he's from Baroque era.! :) Now for about 3 years(4 maybe) DT is my NUMERO UNO band... So anyone that's flaming others because they listen to grunge is IMO not very mature, and they should be asked if they aren't becoming sort of musical rasists... You can flame me if you like, but I dare to speak and shall...

I highly recommend Expose for any serious prog fan. They even do some roundtable reviews which is 4 reviewers on one album title. Progression has more pictures than Expose, and manages to review more prog metal (Angra, Altura..) Both are b/w.

i can tell you that you won't see echolyn live....as the five piece we all know and love. whether "echolyn" will tour or not is uncertain at this time. ray, brett and paul may in fact "dig echolyn from the grave" without tom and chris (who has refused to play with echolyn..and if you'd hear finneus gauge (and you will in may) you'd know why.) lemur voice is playing in europe. i spoke to marcel yestrerday, and there's a chance of a nice prog tour coming to europe soon (featuing a few magna carta bands, lemur voice included).
shadow gallery lives 2 hours from me, so if they pkay, they better play locally.
