Gee, I thought the 'Jam had "progressed" to the point where we didn't need
to put "IMO" after every sentence. Listen, Andy, I don't like Megadeth.
Get over it. I've stated my opinions about Megadeth and other bands
before, and people have gotten irate like yourself and felt the need to
defend their favorite bands. Fine. Just because I don't like Megadeth
    doesn't mean I don't respect them. They're fantastic players. I think
it's great that the drummer's dad is a jazz cat. But, I'm entitled to my
opinion. As for my substance abuse comments, I'm sorry if you took them
the wrong way. They weren't meant to offend. I don't smoke or drink,
don't feel the need to, and so I can't relate, sympathize, or empathize
with Mr. Mustaine and company. If you still feel the need to vent
anger or flame me, please e-mail me privately, because the 'Jam doesn't
    need it.

    Konban Wa,

    1) DON'T MISS STEVE MORSE. For those of you who have seen this tour,
    was there a Morse/ LaRue/ Romaine/ Rudess/ Morgenstein jam at every
    show, or just at Tramps?

    2) I welcome my new Mr. So & So grandchild CMerlo into the fold. I'm
still the only person in the solar system with their rockin' first album
Paraphernalia, Ah HA HA HA HA HA!!!
    (Haven't forgotten ya, Rick. . .)

    3) Hobson the Traveller is beyond kuul.

    4) Note that Mr. So & So's lyrics are far darker than the music itself.
. .in fact, the lyrics on Paraphernalia are so damn depressing and
suicidal that I wondered if the reason there wasn't any new material
from them was because they killed themselves. (Seriously.)

    5) I was told by Bob Wolf (of Prog Rock Nite) at least 8 months ago that
Mr. So & So had completed a third album, but there is still no sign of
    it.

    6) Rick, thanks for recommending Enchant! (He told me they sounded like
    Mr. So & So! :) )

    7) Where in the NYC area can I get Spock's Beard material????? (I have
The Light. . .Muy Exceletante, Chicos!)

    8) Will Spock's Beard ever play in the damn Northeast already???????

    9) Any word on future Shadow Gallery recordings or performances?

    10) Butafuoco!!!

    Party on,

    DJ Kuul A

Guess what? My post has Dream Theater content this time. (As if
    anybody's reading it anyway.)
I just discovered that a girl who lives across the hall from me
likes Dream Theater. Some friend of hers introduced them to her, and I
told her all about them (she had never heard of them before). She's
borrowing my copy of _Images and Words_. The only bad thing is that
"Space-dye Vest" was her favortie song on _Awake_.
Anybody in North America who saw _Jeopardy!_ tonight (Monday) knows
how Ayn Rand's name is pronounced, thanks to Robin Quivers. I always like
her, but now I like her even more. Too bad she lost in Final Jeopardy.

    Well, well.... settle down Bevis.

Actually there is no official work or progress in getting the Savatage
Streets Rock Opera released. The band (Jon, Johnny Lee, and Paul O'Neill)
want to do this, but it is still a low priority since they have so
much going on at the moment. If it does hoppen most likely it will be
released in Europe and not in the US. (Just my guess)

Sorry to post this here but I don't know where to start so I thought
this may be the best way.

I am going to New York and D.C. for a conference in end of June and for
an Arizonian, I have never been to anywhere except CA. So if anyone
from NY or DC can give me some input on basically anything, that will
    help me out a lot.
I have questions like where is the best area to stay in NY (I will be
there for a week) so that I may also do the tourist thing? (the
conference is in DC, I just thought I might as well go see the big Apple
while I am in the east coast.)
In DC the conference is held at the Omni Shoreham Hotel, if anyone has
any idea where this is at can someone please tell me? Is this the best
Hotel to stay at where it is convenient to do the sight seeing of the
    capitol, etc?
I think this is enough for now, if anyone can help me it will be greatly
    appreciated. Thanks!!

I hope it's enthusiastic on a DT list. Would be kind of sad if the people here didn't like it.

Double standard? I guess I'll get the flame police out again, but BULLSHIT. To clarify-- because I like DT a lot regardless of what some person drools, I will buy their albums. Because I am lukewarm on Fates, 25 or 30 drooling reviews will turn me off. The double standard you are referring to is called "preference".. the act of human beings liking one thing more than another. I'm sure you're acquainted with it. >considered a self-fulfilling fantasy.....Didn't happen for me, didn't >happen for a bunch of the list..... Of course not. Most Ryche fans here like Ryche from their old days, ie, when they sounded like Dream Theater. I would expect people here to not like Hear In The Now Frontier as it represents Queensryche going away from the music that most people here consider front and centre-- if not metal, than at least prog metal. So to me, it was self-fulfilling :). Sorry to ruin your logic though. >Basically, the whole point of this diatribe is that whoever wrote that >self-fulfilling BS owes the list an apology of sorts.....on the grounds As someone else already said, there is a predisposition on this group to like Fates Warning. Same would go for Enchant, Lemur Voice, Shadow Gallery, Megallan, Cairo, Ivanhoe, Kaos Moon and far too many bands for me to remember. You can ask for an apology for that but I'm not sure who you're expecting it from. I wrote that "BS" and it's not forthcoming from me :). >c) and gordon....it's FATES, not FATE'S And Partha, a proper name is capitalized. See we can all nitpick but it's disrespectful and doesn't get us anywhere. Still it's your call..

-- And Pat, for the last time -- >Sorry for the waste of bandwidth. If you were sorry you'd have emailed me instead of spamming to the list. You may be right and you may be wrong, but don't apologize for something as you're doing it, it's hypocritical. For somebody who likes to sling the mud yourself I find your "disdain" amusing, but not believable.

-- Chris -- >> > I like Dream Theater enough not to care either way. But in a >> >borderline case like Fate's it often makes the difference. > I'm sorry to hear that. I would hope you could take the lead with >your own tastes, and not follow blindly what others say. When I haven't heard a band, I have to depend partially on what others say. The Gilbratar Encyclopedia of Progressive Rock contains hundreds of bands, am I supposed to buy something by all of them so I can take the lead with my own tastes? And I do have three Fates Warning albums. However back to my original point <what point? -- very funny> when you talk about a band to someone who is considering them (like me) you are acting as a representative of the band. If you make a bad recommendation (ie a weak or non-representative album) or act abrasively you probably won't convince someone to try the music. I think you can draw your own conclusions for the rest of my train of thought. >> > I do not claim to be mature by nature or in practice. > Again, you do make this claim when you act on your right to call >something like "The giant middle finger" so immature so many times. No, I do not. Is it possible for an alocholic to recognize somebody else's alcoholism? Is it possible for a liar to tell when somebody else is lying and call them on it? In any event this is being blown out of proportion. I called him a name because I dislike him personally. It's not a routine thing for me. If you have never called anyone who you disliked a name before, I hereby declare my immaturity. Otherwise you will have to retract your attack or you are being a hypocrite. >> >If somebody says that Alder can't sing it is no more disrespectful than >> >having ANY OTHER OPINION on ANY OTHER ISSUE. > Wrong. What is he doing on the album? Even if you don't like the >sound of his voice, or the way he does it, you CAN NOT argue that he's not >singing, unless you invoke your Milli Vanilli Amendment. I don't think "can't sing" was meant to say he was physically unable to sing, just that he was unable to perform it with a minimum level of proficiency. I don't agree with that view, but I will allow someone else to hold it and defend that person. Don't you Americans have a first amendment about Free Speech? (Or is the 3rd or 5th??) I thought that extended to ideas and opinions and expression as well. Maybe I'm incorrect. > Mike is an intelligent guy. He knows EXACTLY what to expect when >he posts. Further, I think it's ridiculous to try and say that making fun Ok.. if Mike is that intelligent, *I* didn't know that. I figured he was more like me, nice on ideas but rough on delivery :). (at least when I'm in a bad mood). In that case, yes, he was out of line. BTW ever notice how many more End-of-jams you can get when you make 90 line posts? It's a good thing I don't do this often. Hi all

The new Tiamat album 'A Deeper Kind Of Slumber' was released yesterday. I went to my local CD dealer, slapped my money on the counter, he slapped the CD into my hand and off I went. No searching through 5 malls for me. Having first steadied my nerves with a couple of post-work beers, it was off to the pit to give this little beauty a couple of spins (parts of this review will assume that you are familiar with some of Tiamat's other stuff).

Although I've only had the album in my possesion for about 18 hours, I've listened to it about 6 times, and to say that I am hooked, not to say totally fascinated would be an understatement. But first a warning: don't expect a second 'Wild Honey'. Tiamat *is* Johan Edlund, and the heavier influences that used to come from Johnny Hagel are almost totally absent on this album. So, what's this album like? Can any of you remember when Pink Floyd were a new band doing new things? Really old stuff when Sid Barrett was still with them or just after Dave Gilmore joined - well this album has a lot of the atmosphere of the old Floyd music. Wierd spaced-out things happen all the time, acoustic guitars suddenly get replaced by distorted electric ones, keyboards drift in and out, birds twitter in the background (greetings from Granchester Meadows). Ideal music to have a little smoke to (but we all gave that up years ago though, didn't we children?). But this isn't everything - disco and (dare I say it) techno rhythms are also in there, elements of bands like Joy Division, Sisters Of Mercy and Heaven 17 can clearly be heard mixed in with cellos, violins, sitars and oboes, with Johan's dark, sad, almost threatening vocals floating above everything. This is a most impressive album that is extremely moody and atmospheric, and is another step away from what Tiamat started as. There is no going back for this band. Very progressive (as in moving on) but not progressive metal. I'm sure that this will be one of my top 5 albums for this year, even if Dream Theater manage to get 'Godot' out by the end of the year. Extra tip: listen to this album on headphones.

    Drummer/Rush joke #2361:

How many drummers does it take to change a light bulb?

Nine. One to change the damn thing and eight to discuss how Neil Peart would have done it better.

stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Tiamat - A Deeper Kind Of Slumber (what else did you expect?)

Yes. I think their first record label, Pagan Records, pressed up only half a dozen copies of "Paraphernalia", some record store clerk (Specs?) nabbed a copy out of curiosity, was bored with it and sold it to CD Solution for $5, and Mr. Silverman stumbled across it for a whopping $7.95. Quite a find, if I do say so myself. I'm surprised this gem was never mentioned to me back in the day, recalling another Silverman recommendation from the days at U.Miami, that being T-Ride. These great recommendations are too few and far between.

I heard they now have a deal with Dorian Records, which is run (?) by one of those Marillion guys...or something like that. I'd expect a new record any day now. Unless they have similar troubles as those of the DT boys. Who knows.

    >6) Rick, thanks for recommending Enchant! (He told me they sounded like >Mr. So & So! :) )

Ahh. Glad I could return the favor. We should do this more often. Now go pick up Angra "Holy Land". It's dandy.

I'd save myself the hassle and just order straight from Radiant Records. That's where I got both of mine.

    >10) Butafuoco!!!

    Straight up!
