I want to try a little musical experiment. I'm all you musicians have had
this problem: you get really bad-ass riff that you can't stop playing, but
you can't go anywhere with it. It's just THE RIFF.

Well, I have that problem right now, and I wanted to see if this wonderful
thing called the internet could help me.

Here's my plan: anybody interested just send me an email to
ernie@pananet.com , and I'll send you .wav of that riff, and then if you
can think of a riff to add to it, email it to me. Any takers? I think this
could bring some pretty interesting results:)

    later,
    Ernie

Actually, I think it's fair to say that most of us appreciate the large majority of Dream Theater's lyrics, and that the music wouldn't be nearly as moving with different lyrics.

    > (except our lost member, kevin > moore, may his soul rest to peace...)

He's not dead. He just left the band.

Yes, there are, and I agree with you (see the .sig). However, this is the Dream Theater mailing list. You know, the NMS would just *love* you.

    > TWO:there r few people who live in such places(let's say, like israel) > who can't get even one fucking cd of our dear DT,and i'm not even > trying to talk about bootlegs... so whom ever who got bootlegs and an > mp3 program can PLEASE put them in some kind of a site and PLEASE do > some of us a favore!!!! thanx in advance!!!!

Um, chill? There are plenty of jammers who would be kind enough to engage in a trade with someone that asked politely. You catch more boots with honey.

(And I didn't even flame the stupid sonofa...)

Yeah, that's the gist of it. But it goes a little deeper than that. To hear FG tell it, Renfro not only violated their rights, but punished them for trying to stand up for themselves. Basically, when FG called Renfro on the violation, he un-invited them. Pretty nasty business, if you ask me.

I think if I go to ProgDay 98, it will only be if he apologizes to FG on the web, lets them headline, and basically repents for "being a dick"(tm).

In other news, I am happy to report that the paperwork is all done and signed, and I am now the proud owner of a brand-spankin'-new Master of Science degree from the University of Vermont. Later this month, I will be a first-semester Ph.D. student at the College of William and Mary. No more New England winters. :)

Oh, yeah, and the FAQ will have a new home by September 1st. I'll let you all know when that happens.

I don't have it, but a friend does (I talked him into buying it when he said he couldn't afford it ;-) ). It's a great CD (two CDs, actually). There's only one Def Leppard song, so I guess it's the US version. BTW, that song is nothing like the jpower ballads they were known for in the 80's, it's old school speed metal. Pretty cool. There's some really cool tracks from Samson, Maiden, Witchfynder General, Diamondhead....great CD!!

Well, I dunno. Awake is full of less blatant examples of the concept of "awakeness." For example: "6:00 and the siren kicks in from a dream..." signifying someone waking up. That's Kev's. Also, aren't the samples in SDV supposed to be representative of someone awake late at night, flipping through channels on the TV?

Just something to remember. <JP is trying to take over, though.> :)

    maybe they're...leppard spots.

Various thoughts to share, culled from recent 'Jams:

Rogerio Brito wrote: >Why do we seem to love to hear our preferred songs on the radio >instead hearing it from our CD player? The CD player has better sound >quality... Or do we feel amazed to know that lots of people are hearing to >*that particular song* at the same time we are? :-) IMHO, it's more of a 'thrill of the chase' kind of mentality. We know we want to hear the song, but hearing it at random played on the radio is somehow more fun that knowing it is available at the push of a button. There's no 'exploration' (changing stations) and no 'discovery' (hearing it being played without doing it yourself). I presume it is a common enough mindset - after all, they have a 'Random' button on CD players, right?

omeraron@netvision.net.il blessed us with his opinion: >i thought that you allready figured out >that DT can't write lyrics, only music!( Strong words for this crew, but opinions are like a$$holes - everyone has one! My view: he's so far off base he's no longer in the same dimension. ACOS: Portnoy, Metropolis: Petrucci, etc. Moore was/is good, but he's not the only one who can write!

    >YTSE-SURVEY INT'L II - FINAL RESULTS Ouch! My score compared to the 'Jam: 3 in the top 10, the rest are below #25 (3 made it to the 'Singles' column). Hmmm - very interesting!

1-Does anyone have the complete Chopin etude that appeared in a few Guitar World magazines (in the JP section)? I searched in the GW archives but I found nothing. It must be an old issue. :(

2- How many instructional videos has JP released?

3- Is there any video by Portnoy available? Can I download it somewhere in the .avi/.mov format? Are there transcriptions of the exercises?

    Help.

Just got my copy of the new Atomic Opera direct from Frank Hart. Thanks for the info, Dan! It's a great album! Half the band is gone however. Both Jonathan Marshall and Jonas Velasco are not on it. Jonas co-wrote one tune with Frank. Kemper Crabb is in the band now, playing mandolin. It's great to have a follow up to "For Madmen Only".

Wait, is he even talking about bootlegs or not? Jeez, the time you have to wait for a whole boot to play through MP3, I could walk to..."let's say, like Israel" and beat your ass, and come back and quote every DT lyric that KevMo didn't help write. Well, we have come to the close of another Ytse-Survey Int'l. It was a lot of fun, and once again, a big thanks to all who participated. We ended up with 164 participants, destroying our goal by 14. 23 contributions came in during the big 'LAST 2 DAYS' push. Good job, y'all.

Here are the final Ytse-Survey International II results: (sorry for the ungodly length of this post -- let the flaming begin)

Number of participants: 164 Number of different bands/artists mentioned: 372

    YTSE-SURVEY INTERNATIONAL II CHAMPION: RUSH

    Rank) Band/Artist (votes) ------------------------- 1) RUSH (95) 2) Queensryche (87) 3) Fates Warning (64) 4) Savatage (57) 5) Metallica (42) 6) Angra (35) Megadeth 8) Steve Vai (34) 9) Iron Maiden (33) 10) Yes (30)

Not only did Rush win the competition, they destroyed it. They take the survey with a whopping 95 votes, 8 votes over defending champion Queensryche, who themselves broke their own original record. The biggest two improvements over the last two days of eligibility were Angra, who jumped clear up into a tie for 6th place with Megadeth, and King's X, whose 7 votes over the last two days (where were YOU guys?) earned them a spot on the 'Honorable Mention' list with 20 votes.

Congratulations to Rush and all of the other bands who made the list. The Top 10 is listed above; here now is the rest of the rankings from #11 and so on:
