Hey I like this guy, sounds like he's got something here. But you must
remember to sing the whole song next time Tigger. OK?
A wonderful thing is a tigger, a tigger's a wonderful thing. Their tops
are made out of rubber, their bottom's made outta springs. Their bouncy..
Hmm, now what WAS the rest of that ditty?

It's not even close to a full list, but of the ones I own:
1> A Pleasant Shade of Grey
2> Parallels
3> Inside Out
4> No Exit
The 'balls & chunk' contingent will now flame me to heck for putting
NE last, but I prefer the 'smoother' albums. I think 'Jam consensus
was "Parallels" the last time this came up; but that was before APSOG.

I can hear some 'old Genesis' in "Script for a Jester's Tear" and
"Fugazi," as well as part of the b-sides collection "B-Sides Themselves,"
but nowhere else. "Misplaced Childhood" and "Clutching at Straws" sound
more like a melancholy Signals-era Rush to me. Genesis just has much
more weird stuff going on than Marillion does.

If you have the money, get MC first, followed by the compilation "Best of
Both Worlds," which has tracks from all their albums except the latest
one. Of course, if you _really_ like MC, just grab the rest of their
albums and save BoBW for last (and then, only get it if you want to be
a completist.)
Of course, Fish-Era Marillion and Hogarth-Era Marillion (switched
vocalist/lyricists) sound rather different, and all the albums mentioned
before are Fish-era. For Hogy's side, start with "Season's End" (normal
album) or "Brave" (concept album -- tough to get into, but their best
album overall, IMAO).

The closest thing, IMveryHO, is Jewel. Acoustic Guitar instead of piano,
and much less angst, but the same high-quality vocals.
But you're right, Tori's really in a class by herself.

I don't know if you have stuff by these bands, but here we go:
Shadow Gallery (from Carved in Stone):
Don't Ever Cry, Just Remember - not fully acoustic, but it's piano-led,
and the guitars only do chordy stuff in the chorus, and the solo bit
is _flute_, then guitar. There's electric bass throughout, though.
Celtic Princess - instrumental.
Alaska - acoustic guitar, piano, bass, and that flute again.
Ghostship - the "Enchantment" section is all blistering-fast piano.
Bonus Track - classical-style instrumental.
Queensryche:
Silent Lucidity - from Empire (duh)
Someone Else? - from Promised Land
Savatage: (where to start? :-)
lots of Dead Winter Dead has acoustic stuff, but AFAIK, there are no
all-acoustic tracks. Try: Memory, One Child, Xmas Eve, or Not What
You See, and see if any of them are close enough.
same goes for Handful of Rain; try "Alone You Breathe".
same again for Edge of Thorns; "Exit Music" and "Sleep" are acoustic, as
is the first half of "All That I Bleed."
Lots of Hoggarth-era Marillion is acoustic, as are the "Crying For
Help" songs by Arena (the British one), but neither of these is really
a "metal" band, so they might not be what you're looking for.
Hope that helps!

WOW! I have many things to tell you jammers about the Ft. Lauderdale guitar
clinic. Instead of teaching the crowd of ~150 picking and stretching
exercises, JP decided to play "guitar kareoke" with the finished songs. He
played 'Lines in the Sand,' 'Peruvian Skies,' 'Take Away my Pain,' and 'A
New Millenium.' The songs are definitely progressive. :)
'A New Millenium' will shock you guys just like '6:00' did. 'Take Away my
Pain' has an added drum part that gives it a Brazilian flavor. 'Lines' and
'Peruvian' sound great. FII is going to be an amazing album. It has
everything DT has to offer.
JP was nice to all the fans, and he answered many questions. Among the
interesting things he said was that he was happy with Kevin Shirley. He said
DT was lucky to work with such a great producer. And from what I heard, I
agree with JP. FII could be DT's best album from what I've heard.
In a reply to what category music DT plays, JP made an interesting analogy
to listening to DT. He said you can't judge a movie by a two minute clip as
you can't judge the new album by one song.
JP also played some other songs. He played a cover of Prince's 'Purple Rain'
and the two songs he did for the Sega video game. 'Purple Rain' was awesome.
I did not move once throughout the song. The songs from the video game are
INTENSE. They are DT songs compressed into 1.5 minutes with lots of balls
and chunk and shredding.
After the clinic, JP signed autographs and talked to the fans. He seemed
interested in what people were saying. He does not have a big ego at all.
The only bad part about the clinic is that it makes the September 23 seem
even farther away.
Isaac
PS- It was cool meeting some Jammers. Hi E-man. And have you re-subbed Joe?

And we very possibly could. :) The "rumors" about smoking are not "unfounded." Geoff Tate smokes, and smoking wreaks havoc on the human voice. These are FACTS. To say that somehow the almighty Geoff Tate is unaffected by this is to fool oneself.
> Think about it folks, if you were a very very wealthy singer who did not > need to tour anymore, and you knew your voice was messed up from > smoking, would you put yourself through the pain and embarrassment of a > tour? NO. You wouldnt risk the consequences.
How do you know how much money the band has?
Personally, if I were a singer, I just wouldn't smoke. It's STUPID. I will say that again: SINGERS WHO SMOKE ARE STUPID.
> Geoff is an intelligent man who would not hurt himself in such a way.
Well, I see him with a cigarette in his mouth at every public appearance.
> The guy caught a really bad head cold, and had a couple of rough nights.
I'm sure he did. That's too bad.
> Outside of that, every performance has been reviewed as nothing less > than stellar.
Yes, but those reviews are completely subjective. If person A thinks he sounded stellar, person B may think he sounded fine and person C may think he sucked.
Personally, as a trained singer, I think even when he sounds good lately he doesn't sound great. I think he sounded as good as he ever does anymore at the Nissan Pavilion show last month, but I CAN HEAR the effects of the smoke on his voice.
> I love the 'Jam, but I get sick of the fucking criticism around this > place sometimes. This is probably the only place on Earth that takes the > top 10 rock vocalists
HEY! No top 10 lists! :)
> and picks them apart piece by piece on a regular basis.
And singers ask for it. A singer puts more of himself on the line than any other member of the band, and the criticism comes with the territory. If he's been a singer for any decent length of time, he expects it. I've heard bootlegs that have made me want to say "James LaBrie sucks live," but the man has proved me wrong every time I have seen one of their shows. Geoff Tate has not. Inhaling hot smoke has damaged his voice. At his age, there is still a chance it could be turned around, but only if he quits smoking.
> Fuck, if I took all of the vocalist reviews in here as gospel, I > wouldn't think there were any good singers.
But I thought you said most of the reviews of Geoof were "stellar."

Try "Someone Else" off of Queenryche's "Promised Land" CD. Not only will they not believe it's the same band that did Operation Mindcrime, but it will probably move them to tears on the process, as well as make them want to hear more ;)

How about Yes's Wonderous Stories? That is a killer song and it's acoustic. Queensryche also has an acoustic version of "Della Brown" that is pretty good, but the only place I've seen it is on the Building Empires video. Good Luck!
