I understand where you're coming from. I think Itchy gets a bit
defensive when people dislike Marillion (to the point of sounding very
caustic) but he's actually a really cool guy. It's sort of like someone
(Syrinx?) writing and insulting Ray Alder's voice... I get angry. If you
don't like it, and just state your case as such, you shouldn't be put down
for it. I personally have tried to listen to Marillion and have failed to
enjoy it really. I only have Brave, and supposedly their earlier stuff is
a lot better, but to me, Brave is like a valium. I've spent over 10 hours
of dedicated listening to the album, but I can't get into it. That means
it's great background music for a party or whatever, because it won't take
away from a conversation, but it won't keep me interested if I'm listening
    to it specifically.

Too add my $.07, I'd say to buy a set of D'Addario 9's and buy a
56 guage for the bottom. That's what John Petrucci does. I use 10's and
a low 62 double wound guitar string at the bottom, because I want my
strings tight. I prefer GHS Nickel Rockers in this setting, but if you're
    going to use 9's I wouldn't recommend anything but D'Addario on a 7
string. Why? Because I know that works perfectly, and all of my friends
who own 7 strings always come back to that setup eventually, or do like me
and block off the Trem for the big as 10's.

    > You should buy Jim Matheos' solo cd (not to be confused with
    > Mr. SubtleRage's work by the same title) "First Impressions."

That's as close to liking Fates Warning as Subtlerage will ever
get... Andy: you WILL like this album. Very Hedges-esque at times.

I'd also recommend Passion, Grace and Fire by John McLaughlin, Al
DiMeola, and Paco DeLucia as some cool music. ANYTHING by Al DiMeola is
going to have some groundbreaking acoustic pickwork somewhere along the
    line.

For fans of moving instrumental acoustic music, check out Michael
Hedges _Aerial Boundaries_, _Oracle_, or _Breakfast in the Field_, and
check out Billy McLaughlin's _Fingerdance_. Great work. Also, feel free
to pick up a couple of those various artists cds from Narada, Windham
Hill, etc, with titles like "The Art of Fingerstyle Guitar" etc. That's
always a cool way to find some new leads to follow to some great new cds.

Nope. No one does. I have this basically made for me through
GHS. I order bulk sets of 10's and have em throw in the 62.

Look should never be an element in the choice of a guitar. It should be playability and sound. In my opinion, the Universe is superior in both of these realms, as well as look. That's personal preference, to a point. Regardless, you're better off paying $899 for a NEW RG7 than you are paying $1500 for a Universe (unless it's one of the rare older Universes, like the swirl or the new Black and Chrome UV that's not out yet).

There are two correct pronounciations for this brand. "Eye Buh Nez" or "I Been Had". The correct pronounciation depends fully on which store you purchased the guitar at. --

I would agree with this. In fact, I bought it just so I could have all of those songs on one CD for the car - I really could have cared less about the "unreleased" stuff. Getting "Quietus" by itself was worth the price of admission, although it's hard to have a Fates best of without "Nothing Left To Say"...

A drummer I used to play with made this statement about Ray circa No Exit - Symmetry: "He uses his voice like some kind of wild instrument in the music, rather than like a normal singer"

I've always agreed with that statement. Maybe that's why I didn't like Parallels and Inside Out as much - he sings more conventionally on those two, IMNSHO.

I agree - ignore the fact that the CD is divided into 12 parts. It only works in the context of the whole...

    > >Take care, and please, DISCUSS!

Well, all right. You twisted my arm! :)

Having been a Fates fan since Spectre, I've enjoyed seeing the band change over the years, and they've produced some superior music. I recommend the band to anyone who will take the time to listen.

I think that the order that you get cds plays a part in which one you like better. I ended up getting Parallels first (thanks to the late 103.1 The Underground's regularly playing the song "Eye To Eye"). I didn't buy any other Fates cds until I found DT... Then I ended up getting all the Fates cds. Spectre is a great cd, but Parallels was first (sorta like your first love). I would probably say that I would like Spectre better if I had heard that cd first. Who knows...

Just saw Fates last night. Very cool show. Opened with PSOG, the entire thing. Very cool. Kevin Moore is touring with Fates and is basically playing all of Frank Aresti's parts. Next was Monument, as well as a various songs off of Parallels. Did a VERY cool rendition of 11th Hour.

Overall a good Fates show. Not great since they didn't go any further back than Parallels at all. I was bummed about that.. Really wanted to hear stuff from ATG and No Exit. Oh well.. Good to see they haven't given up though..

That's not Kevin Moore, it's Ed Roth (I think). > > Overall a good Fates show. Not great since they didn't go any further back > than Parallels at all. I was bummed about that.. Really wanted to hear > stuff from ATG and No Exit. Oh well.. Good to see they haven't given up > though..

In '94, they played Guardian. That was amazing. I'm not sure the older material would sound right with keys instead of guitar, so I'm glad I caught them back then. Life in Still Water and Monument sounded all right in Cleveland, apart from the keyboard solos (which may have been OK, but I couldn't tell because they were too quiet) but Eleventh Hour sounded kind of weird. It still rocked my world because Ray is the best singer on earth, but I wonder if the lack of guitar might make an even bigger difference if they tried to play things from, say, symmetry on back.

I've tried the RG-7 and Universe, and there really is no comparison. If you really want it that badly, spend the extra money on the Uni.

btw, I don't recall which guitar mag it was, but in the new gear section of that mag they had a section on Ibanez' expansion of the 7-string line. Besides the RG series, there are two more 7-string models going into production: 1. a jazz-guitar model ($1500-2000) of the likes that George Benson and Pat Metheny are currently using, and 2. An acoustic (!!!!!) model, priced at about $1200.
