Just a tip for all Jammers out there.
I just picked up the album "legendary tales"
from Italian band "Rhapsody". It is an fascinating
mix of classical music and progressive metal.
I think it is absolutely great!!

    More info on them overhere:

    http://www.world-online.de/limb-music

3 Dec I will be in Den Bosch.
I hope to see some Dutch jammers there.

As a side note to the TSO/Savatage discussion.

I was half-watching a figure skating competition on late night the other
night, and one of the skaters was announced as skating to "Alone You
Breathe" by a band called Sabotage (their spelling, not mine). The music
started, sounded vaguely familiar, the vocals started, sounded VERY
familiar. I went over to check my CD collection, and sure enough, right
there on Handful Of Rain - "Alone You Breathe".

Amazing what you find when you're not looking for it. I kind of wish I'd
been paying more attention, so I could send a letter/e-mail to the promoters
correcting the spelling of the band's name. :)

    Ahoy,

If you didn't catch the first post, here's the second! This past
June, a few of the Houston jammers got together for dinner at Texadelphia
off of Westheimer for an evening of prog rock talk & food. The second one
will be coming up either on December 12th or 13th, a Friday or Saturday
respectively. It will probably be around 7 or 8 o' clock that evening at the
restaurant. If you haven't already emailed me and are interested, do so and
I will keep your email address for when I send out the address and phone
number to those of you going. Bring anybody with you that you want as well.
Hope to see you there - good sailing!

    who the fuck cares?

it's reviews like mr. foy's that i believe keep periodicals like "poets,

please- don't even bother sweating this ape. maybe there's a valid point in

I might have to agree with Mr. Agar on this one guys. But, I think what
happens with a lot of guitarists is that they get "bored" with playing the
stuff that got them so much acclaim in the first place. I can understand
this to some extent (I mean, how different can Yngwie make all of those
neo-classical songs sound?). The most obvious case in point for me is one
Mr. Paul Gilbert. Or even the whole band, Mr. Big. Listen to that first
album! It rocks hard (rides free, hehe) from start to finish (ballads
excluded, of course). But then Paul seemed to get fed up with the whole
ripping thing - much to the disappointment of Racer X fans who saw Mr. Big
as the answer to a lot of guitar-prayers for a band that kicked ass and
took names. Malmsteen also tripped out on his Eclipse album in favor of a
more bluesy style "feeling" kind of approach to soloing.

Why? I dunno. I realize most of these guitarist started out as wide-eyed
fans of the best guitarists of their youth. Most of which were basically
blues players (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, etc). Maybe they wanted to "get
in touch with their roots". Richie Kotzen was another shred-head who could
whip out some beautiful, melodic stuff, and did so on his first couple of
albums. But, then came "Mother's Head Family Reunion". What was it?
Sounded like the soundtrack to Boogie Nights with better guitar. Nuno?
Still a relatively good songwriter and not the worst singer around, but by
the third Extreme album he was already holding back his substantial chops.
WHY?! Maybe they just run out of steam. It's easier to take the abrupt
end of a promising career (i.e. Randy Rhoads, Jason Becker, et al) than to
watch a one die a lingering, boring, embarassing death. =P

I guess whether we like it or not, guitarists do what they wanna do. We
just have to hope that they do what we like for a while, until the next guy
    comes along. [shrug]

Oh well. Just remember when you say your prayers before going to bed at
night to thank God for good prog! :)

P.S. - Jonathan, I thought Angelo's solo album (No Boundaries) was way
better than anything he ever did for Nitro... Now you wanna wonder
whatever happened to good guitarists, let's talk about Jake E. Lee! :P

That's what I think. Now let's get back to jamming.

Whitney Houston and Jermaine Jackson called "Precious Moments". The song
I am looking for is entitled "If you say my eyes are beautiful" If
anyone has this cd or knows someone who does, my boss is willing to pay
top dollar for it. Also if anyone out there knows, is there a mailing
list for Jermaine Jackson?? I can't find it. If anyone can help me I
would greatly appricate it!! Sorry about the non-DT content. Email me
in private for thjis matter. Thanks!!!

            Hi, Neil.

I think that I have a problem. Since I'm in Brazil, I think that I
should send my subscription to the U.K., right? Ok, but last Friday I went
to our post office and they told me that for some reason, they don't send
sterling pounds to the foreign countries.

So, I'd like to know if I could send the money to the US
    headquarter of the DTIFC instead...

Funny you mentioned that... I read the same thing in a local newspaper here in Sao Paulo (that's Brazil, not USA. :) ), talking about these new channels... It's an interesting idea, but they mentioned a thing: the quality of the broadcast would not be as good as in a normal channel, as (from what I understood) they would be broadcasting about 6 digital channels from one analog one (don't ask me how that works. I really don't have a clue.) Anyway, only time will tell what will be out of this.

There's one thing that makes me mad sometimes. Generally, on TV programs (at least here), people who like rock/metal are treated like stupid, full of problems, not to say any other things, animals (in lack of a better description, ya know, my English is not that good. :) ). In spite of that, just about ANY song you hear in TV programs is rock/metal. I can't turn the TV around here without hearing a song from Joe Satriani. They seem to love this guy (I really have no complaints on that, as I like him a lot :) ). Other things I oftenly hear includes Malmsteen, Vai, Metallica, sometimes Maiden... Man, does that pisses me off.

Hehehe... about this, "The Silent Nutcracker" is know around here as "Noite Feliz", what stands for "Happy Night". :) About "Sarajevo 12/24", you heard it when I went to your house bringing Savatage's "Dead Winter Dead". Duh. :) Besides that, many of the songs on TSO I first heard on that movie "Home Alone". :) The most recognizable being "A Mad Russian's Christmas" and "Sarajevo 12/24".

    > Just waiting for my Cynic CD to arrive :-), Roger...

Hehehe, birthday is a good thing... I'm going downtown today to spend some of the earnings of last Thursday. :) (More CD's to account! :) )

    That'd be all for now.

I have seen two of the tour shirts: the blue mid-sleeve one with the penis on the back, and the white one with the front and back cover photo on it. I had a choice between these two and I chose the blue one because it looks like at least *some* actual design work was done on it, however little. I wonder if Storm designed these shirts or not, and if they're the only ones. I have to say that my disappointment with the album cover is magnified on these shirts. My queensryche HitNF shirt is about 50 times cooler than either of these two shirts.

For 25 dollars, I really think they should at least make an attempt at putting something new on the shirt, not just the same graphics loosely strewn about.

On a related note, I saw a BIGASS book of all of storm thorgesen's Floyd work, compiled and explained by himself. It looked pretty cool, if anybody likes floyd they would love this book.

Word is that they'll be showing the video for "Christmas Eve" and performing "Prince of Peace".

Pity we don't get the show here in Australia :(

    Hi everyone.

An interesting thing happened to me today... I was at Rockaway Records in Mesa scanning the used CDs as usual, and when I got in line to buy stuff, ahead of me a guy was robbing the clerk at knifepoint! I didn't really have any idea what to do and I can't fight my way out of a wet paper bag, so instincts and memories of High School wrestling kicked in, and I took the guy down from behind and put him in a sleeper hold. As this happened he managed to stab me in the thigh/side (more of a "big poke", not a slash or tear stab) and then the store personnel beat the shit out of him and called the cops.

Anyway I just got back from getting 20-odd stitches and I'm a bit lightheaded from the anasthesia wearing off. This won't affect my work much, if at all, because although being stabbed in the thigh makes sitting difficult, I can still take care of business. I just thought I'd share it with everyone since naturally I'm totally freaked out right now. In a way it's kinda cool.. when all the drugs wear off and the scar remains, I'll look back and know I may well have saved a kid's life by taking down the robber, and that's pretty darned cool! :) Take care all, and may this never ever happen to you!!

ICE AGE are a 4-piece prog rock/metal band from Long Island. They used to go by the name of MONOLITH (just check the liner notes of DT's "Images and Words"). I've seen them a bunch of times on Long Island and in NYC (anyone remember Prog-Nite at the Rock-n-Roll Cafe on the first Wed. of every month??) and each time was impressed at Josh Pincus (keys and vocals) and Jimmy Pappas (guitars) control over their instruments....great players!! I only wish the drums and bass were more prominent.

I havent heard their latest demo as ICE AGE but I have their '95 demo "Initiation" as MONOLITH and think its great. Three instrumentals and one w/ vocals ("Overload", "Initiation" (vocals), "Spare Chicken Parts", and "The Guardian of Forever" <--beautiful track!!)

Its too bad they had to cancel their appearence at Powermad 'cuz that would have been a great opportunity for them. Hopefully they won't share the same fate as INNER STRENGTH (another great Long Island prog-metal band that disappeared into obscurity........

Check out their web site for plenty of info and sound samples.
