You know, I know absolutely nothing about sax playing, but i was reading
thru a recent Jazz magazine, and the cover story was basically the editors
choosing the 5 most over-rated and and under-rated jazz musicians... One of
them put Kenny G as overrated and said he had 'bastardized' the
above-mentioned technique. Anyone know about this...oh and reply
privately..this isnt a very jam-oriented topic...unless there're lots of
sax players in here:)

I'm typing this from a shitty-ass terminal where I can't cut and
paste, but I thought I'd concur with Stephan's comments about how
sometimes learning a song ruins it. That was very true for me of both
PMU and especially TTT, which I've just recently begun to be able to
enjoy again, now that I've forgotten most of the guitar parts (really...
it sounds stupid but it's true) When I learn the guitar parts to DT
songs, it becomes hard to hear them the same way, because I just can't
hear the way the guitars fit in with the rest of the instruments
anymore. I have vowed never to learn LTL for this reason... I'm afraid
it would ruin my favorite DT song. There are a few exceptions, though.
I actually gained an increased appreciation for Ytsejam and Metropolis
when I started to learn those, because I paid even more attention than
usual to all the individual parts. Has anyone else experienced this
phenomenon?

Yeah, it's something like that. I attended a clinic by trombone
great Bill Watrous a few years ago. Circular breathing was one of
the techniques he taught. It doesn't really seem terribly difficult
in theory, but I never could get it right either (of course, I was on
a brass instrument. I don't know if it's any more easy or difficult
on a woodwind).
Oh yeah, and mad props to Mike for kicking some ass :).

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.
The guy at Rockaway was a real ingrate... they didn't even give me a
free CD or anything. He didn't even thank me, he just said "don't leave,
you need to talk to the police when they get here." I was thinking (but
didn't say) "Yeah, you're welcome too, dingus!" Heheh. I guess it's all
about the principle of the thing, then. Ironically, I was never supposed
to be there. I had stopped there while on the way to do my daily
deposits, to see if they had the Hollow Years single in yet. The
ultimate irony: they didn't. :) Ah well, it comes and goes. I'm not
feeling too bad at all now. they musta done a GREAT job with the
stitching because it's quite set and solid. What a weird Monday!!
About ReLoad. I won't comment on Load; it's been done. I'm rather happy
with ReLoad (and not only because of the subtle DT connection of Carpe
Diem baby) because a lot of the songs have a bit more complexity to
them. The album opens strong with Fuel, which I DEFINTELY like, Memory
Remains is good until that old dork starts chanting, and then there's a
gap of a few lame songs before the good stuff shows up again toward the
end. Low Man's Lyric, Attitude, and Fixxxer make a good finishing
trifecta. However it is not like AJFA so Metallica is not getting any
closer to their more "prog-ish" tendencies. This album cements the new
perception Met has in my mind as "quality rock, but not innovative or
exceptional as pure music".
In other news, I want to thank you all who are asking about trading in
your silvers!! I'll be getting back to you individually to nail down
each batch one by one, but just know that for now, things are looking
good. And I should have enough Silent Man singles to last a while, and
perhaps a few Lie? We can hope. Thanks so much to all of you.
Got a piece of mail from the Portmeister who says he's on tour right
now, so I guess he has his laptop now and can look in on the Jam from

Yeah, I think it was Mike who said it...he explained how to circular breathe pretty well. For a really good example of how it sounds, there is a Wynton Marsalis CD called "Carnaval" where he plays a song for 4:10 or so, seemingly without taking a breath. If you get bored, check it out.

Yeah I know I know... another post from me. I need to do something to take breaks while I plow through 200 backed up e-mails or else I'll go mad. :)
I spotted a thread on alt.music.dreamtheater that was cross posted from all the hell other groups, about selling "autographed concert or band keepsakes"... stuff like drum heads, picks, albums, and so on. Now, I have always felt that the whole reason that stuff was special was because you got the signature yourself, saw the show yourself, you get the idea. What do you all think about this? For some reason I'm having the hardest time accepting that it's "OK" to sell something that was basically GIVEN to you by a musician, though on the other hand my logical mind says that capitalism works and that if it was so wrong, nobody would buy the stuff, and obviously someone does buy it or nobody would be selling it. The floor is open.
I know that I, for one, will NEVER sell my autographed Japanese Awake and promo posters from Japan, and I sold my autographed Dance of Eternity once, but because it was a TDOE, not because it was autographed. In fact that made it harder to let go of, IMHO.

Thanks to this mailing list, I decided to pick up Shadow Gallery's Carved In Stone after hearing people saying how good it was. Well, after a few listens, I have to agree. It's cool. It reminds me of WDaDU-era DT. I love the segues between the tracks, and the last track (it's unlisted on the sleeve) reminds me of Eve, with it's feel. Thanks again for jammers for reccommending this CD!
I've also been trying to find APSoG, with no luck. I've now asked my local store to order it, so hopefully soon...

I've just seen a picture of the tour shirt and I think it looks quite nice - very tasteful. Still looking forward to the 9th...1 week to go!

It seems that his latest offering is based on the life of the murderer Salvador 'Capeman' Agner, who stabbed two young boys to death in Hell's Kitchen in 1959. So there you have it.

Okay, so when the hell *IS* Fates Warning playing Atlanta?
Creative Loafing (the local music/weird stuff rag) says the Fates will be here on December 3rd. Kind of an interesting feat, since the tourdates on Mike Kizer's Fates page say they'll be in Colorado that day. Now I know the guys in FW are some pretty accomplished musicians, but I didn't know they were magicians too.
The Outer Edge people are hopeless. Nobody I've spoken to knows a damn thing. Does *anyone* know when FW will actually be here in Atlanta? And if you know, do you know how to get hold of tickets? Ticketbastard too is pretending ignorance.
This is kind of important -- if the show here is actually on the 3rd, then I need to take off from work early so I can be there for soundcheck, band-meet, and so forth. If it's on the 14th as previously stated, then I don't need to worry since the 14th is on a Sunday.
On an unrelated note, who's familiar with Hotei's previous guitar work? I like his playing on "Merry Axemas", but I don't recall ever seeing the name before. Is his other stuff worth picking up?
