It sounds pretty good, I'll give you that, but they cannot write good
lyrics. They tell instead of showing. Bad sign. For example, in "Sea of
Lies", they use the beautifully penned lines, "Good and evil - lust
primeval" Good and evil? Of course it's good and evil! Why don't they
show us? (grumble...) Make no mistake, I enjoyed a few tracks ("The
Accolade" and "Pharaoh" -- bot had vivid imagery without saying, "Hey,
this is good and evil we're talking about!" or some other rubbish... ^_^

What got me was when they actually used the phrase "power and majesty" in
a song. Weak! (as Cartman would say) Show me! The song's like 28
minutes long (don't have the actual disc with me -- lost it temporarily at
a friend's place) -- they have time to show me! I don't need the Cliff's
Notes at the end! (growl, grumble)

    >My only objection is the lead singer - the band IMHO might just as well
    >do without him.

Now, the beginning of the title track kicked my butt when I realized all
those parts were him. Cool beans. I just wished he had something
    interesting to sing. (sigh)

    Sorry, no NDTC here.

What's the going opinion on Questions by Treasure Land ?

I'd heard a bit about these guys and decided to order them from Laser's
Edge. I was initially a bit dissapointed on first hearing them (after
reading one particular review which totally raved of them), but after
all, it is a debut effort, so considering that the album is actually
    quite good.

Some great, heavy arrangements which show influences from Symphony X and
some of OFB. The guitarist, Jonas Hornquist, absolutely rips and even
though drumming is usually my forte, he was easily the real point of
interest and seems to be the driving force behind the band. With better
production, (and a new lead singer PLEASE !), these guys could really
    turn some heads.

    Other opinions....?

    Luke.

Hey, was driving in the car this evening, and what should I hear on 92.3
KSJO? Nothing but our old friend, Pull Me Under! Not to mention that I
heard it a few days ago too. Then, a few hours later on I switch to
another station (92.7 in Santa Cruz) and hear the familiar opening of You
Not Me! Not bad for one night.

Looks like Da Boys are getting some more airplay round these parts.

I know it's just me (not you :), but when I listen to YNM, JP's intro, I
hear Prince's intro to When Doves Cry :)

I heard the beginning of BMS behind a commercial on local radio (no talk
about DT going commercial, ok? :). And on a station that only recently
began playing YNM (so I've been told).

Any plans for Hartford pre-show festivities? E-mail is fine.

Hey, all you freaky 'jammers! On our recent trip to Fort Worth, TX, my
husband and I had the occasion to build a "snowgirl" that we called
Vanessa, and this parody just came from that experience. Hope to make it
on the FAQ or something. :)

    The Wintery Skies
(With many apologies to Mr. Petrucci)

    There, there she sits
I swear, the wind'll topple that poor thing
Wait, I see the snow fall
Don't breathe on the snowgirl lest she
    Fall onto the ground

    Under the wintery skies
    "Vanessa" regretfully waits
Two large Brazil nuts for her eyes
    Acorn mouth and carrot nose
    No big surprise
    Windblown and tall
    She's gonna fall
If we don't shore up her foundation
    Poor "Vanessa"

    Hey, I hope she lasts
We're taking our time with this as we form the snow
    Shame, she's not to blame
    She's the snowgirl we created
    In Vanessa's name

    Under the wintery skies
    "Vanessa" regretfully waits
Two large Brazil nuts for her eyes
    Acorn mouth and carrot nose
    No big surprise
    Windblown and tall
    She's gonna fall
If we don't shore up her foundation
    Poor "Vanessa"

    The temp's above
    Freezing today
    She toppled over
    Soon she'll melt away

    Under the wintery skies
    "Vanessa" regretfully waits
Two large Brazil nuts for her eyes
    Acorn mouth and carrot nose
    No big surprise
    Windblown and tall
    She's gonna fall
If we don't shore up her foundation

Yesterday I heard YNM here on 107.3 Brasil 200 FM (for you Sao Paulo 'jammers out there) on Backstage and the DJ said "now we just heard the best of '97" (it was kinda a special edition of Backstage). Other bands that were played that I remember: Deicide, Six Feet Under, Napalm Death.

It makes me wonder if it was really a "best of" edition. :-)

Oh, just forgot to mention that the other day (again, Sao Paulo 'jammers) I was listening to 89.1, 89 FM, and during a radio commercial I started hearing a song that was somewhat familiar. Guess what? "New Millennium". It played for almost 1.5 minute. That *was* cool. If only the f*ck*ng DJ mentioned the band that was playing in the background... :-((

1995 was the year I decided NOT to re-subscribe to the DTIFC... because there was an Official DUTCH Dream Theater fanclub ! I had been a member of the DTIFC for about a year and a half, but I didn't see the point of being a member of two DT fanclubs. You can probably imagine me being a little pissed off, when I found out only the DTIFC members were getting the '96 xmas CD... So, I am really glad the members of all the official fanclubs are getting this year's CD... Helped me plug Theater Of Dreams (the Dutch DT fanclub) a bit too :-) Every time I come across a Dutch DT fan, I tell them about the Dutch fanclub *and* the xmas CD.

I could've switched back to the DTIFC, just for the xmas CD, but didn't even consider it. Looking back, I'm glad I didn't... Every Dutch Jammer should be a member of Theater Of Dreams :-) You can find subscription info on :

On the thread about seeing DT merchanise:

I was at Ear X-tacy in Louisville, KY today (which usually has a lame selection of prog) and was surprised to see that they had finally moved DT from the "pop/rock" section to the "heavy metal" section. In addition they had several FII's (including a Japanese-version import, a promo-copy [yes, they were selling it for less then the REAL ones] and a Hollow Years Single import. For those interested, the Japanese FII was $30.99 and the HY-single was $10.99. I can maybe pick something up if anyone's interested. I was also surprised to see that they had almost every Savatage CD (except TWoM), but there was no TSO in sight.

They did have a used copy of Divine Regale's "Ocean Mind" for $5.99. I snapped that up and am really happy with it. Its as good as the reviews that have already been posted. They also had Iced Earth, but I had to pass. Can someone please give me more info on them? Specifically, what are their lyrics and vocals like? Private mail is fine. Thanks.

Okay, I've got to object here. I think Russell Allen's got one of the strongest and most charismatic voices in prog metal today. He reminds me quite a bit of Ronnie James Dio at times, tone-wise, but sings with a style all his own.

    Check out "Pharaoh" from DWOT:

"I am God, I am king of the land/The hour of judgement is at hand/Winds of revenges sweep through the sand/The mighty Pharaoh lives again!"

    Shivers, every time.

Or "Sea of Lies" from the same disc:

"Through into an eternal abyss I fall/Silent screams through paper walls/I pray someday the sun will shine on me again..."

More shivers. I tell you Allen is an essential part of the band. I can't imagine "The Accolade" or "Eyes of Medusa" without vocals.

True, I haven't picked up "The Damnation Game" yet, so I don't know what he sounded like on that disc, but as far as I'm concerned he's got a part in my "top vocalists" list.

    Cheers, Phil
