I just recently got 2 Angra cds about a month ago. To me they dont sound like DT at all but sound more similar to Helloween. Anyone else think Angra is closer to Helloween then DT. I'm not talking about newer Helloween but Keeper era.

So who all is going to the Jaxx DT show Jan 3?

And also right before he takes his breath before the = note, =3E=3E he touches his tongue?? I find this style very unorthodox. =3E =3EWell, I'm not sure about touching the tongue, but his tongue sticks out =3Ewhen holding notes because that is the =22correct=22 way to sing - i.e. =3Esinging with an open throat cavity. As a point of reference, Billy =3ECorgan of Smashing Pumpkins sings with a closed throat cavity almost all =3Eof the time. =3E =2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A=2A== 2A

I was just thinking about this the other night, and I was gonna say that too. I play a variety of brass instruments, and when I play a really loud/high note, I've learned to open my throat up, like a lot of brass players do (and maybe other instruments too, for all I know). Anyway, with a 60 pound hunk of metal (in my case) stuck to your face, your tongue doesn't stick out, but your throat swells up, as well as a lot of your head, and you look like some sort of screaming bright red frog man. It's attractive. I tried it the other night on the way home, with nothing attached to my face, and my tongue stuck out. I guess expanding your throat pulls you lips and cheeks back if they're not stuck in place by a mouthpiece. It was kind of cool to find that. Anyway, as far as why he touches his tongue, maybe he just likes how his fingers taste? =2Agrin=2A Or maybe it's some sort of habit he's developed. You know, some teacher in the past telling him to touch his tounge to make sure his throat was expanded properly, and it just stuck. Who knows?

    Hello Prog family:

Well, I'm sure everybody has heard and is really excited about the 'Liquid Tension Project' coming out soon with Petrucci/Portnoy/Rudess/Levin.

There's also a new Magna Carta CD called 'Impact' that will be released soon. This project was conceived by Trent and Wayne Gardner from Magellan. There playing is throughout the CD in addition to the following players. The songs are structured and arranged very well. Its not 100% done yet.

Vocals: James LaBrie (Dream Theater) Matt Bradley (Chaos Theory) D.C. Cooper (Royal Hunt)

    Keyboards: Matt Guillory (Chaos Theory)

    Guitar: John Petrucci (Dream Theater)

    Bass: Billy Sheehan (Mr. Big)

    Drums: Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons/BLS)

Very scarry stuff!!! Terry Bozzio is phenominal!!! Well, everybody is!!! Another Must Have CD in addition to Liquid Tension Project!!

Chaos Theory's new material is coming along really well. Off course they'll have a new name when the CD is released. You guys are gonna go apeshit.

Shredders!!! (Brian Wherry, Chris P, etc)

Paul Gilbert has a new CD!!!! Its released on Atlantic. Its called 'King of Clubs'. I haven't heard it yet. I was told its 1/2 Racer X and 1/2 Beatlesque. I want to get this really bad. Anyone hear it yet?

More stuff to look forward to!! '98 is gonna be a great year for Prog.

Be Safe & Merry Christmas, --james--

and on another note....so there i was happily munching away on my burger in burger king, and after the requisite cheesy christmas tune, i hear this beat that sounds ridiculously familiar. peter gabriel's "i have the touch" was sounding over the grilling of the burgers. it was pretty fascinating. i also noted it was a longer version (?!?!)

I have actually broken a set of these sticks... but I didn't take them up on their offer to replace them. They sound horrible, and they send shockwaves all through your arms. I'd either play with straight plastic (which sound like shit, but they are pretty tough and don't screw up your equipment) or Promark 5Bs. I'd rather buy a case of Promarks than those Eastons again. Leave them for the poseur drummer. :)

    >(gripe) >Vinyl or album....coke or soda.....Q-tip or cotton swab.....Kleenex or >tissue.......WHO FRIGGING GIVES A S**T ?!?!?!?!? CD's rule!! PERIOD!

Aside from the first one which doesn't involve a brand name, the one who frigging gives a hoot (smirk) is the company that has a lot invested in a product name, and don't want to see it become a generic and therefore lose their product's visibility and distinctiveness in the marketplace. For example: If everyone (everyone here defined mostly to involve the press and publication areas) called a tissue a "kleenex" and that mis-use was not stopped, then eventually all manufacturers of facial tissue could have a legal precedent for calling their tissues "kleenex" on the box and then the Kimberly-Clark corporation would no longer be the only "Kleenex" on the market, and consumers (who really do often buy things because of brand name) would not know which "Kleenex" was the original (cause consumers are dumb) and Kimberly-Clark would lose much revenue becaue fo this.

And, no. This is not a paranoid ranting, but based on legal precedent. Did you know that "Corn Flake" used to be a brand name owned by Kellogg?

And now, to answer the "why the hell do you know this?" -- I've done some reading of writing magazines and books and such, and this is a _big_ issue in the writer's worls. About half the ads in a writing magazine are from different companies telling writers how to do generics and trademark names correctly.

And I won't say anything else about this on the jam. If you wanna reply, reply to me personally!

    Glen,

    >Charlie, >If you know as much about recording as you think you do,you'll know that in >the mix down process the drums are usually mixed down from their original >tracks to two stereo tracks.

Where did you hear this? Do you speak from experience? Also, how many tracks were you and your band using? If you mixed down, I'll assume you were using no more than 8 tracks, and you mixed down to give the rest of the band a few tracks for guitars and vocals. I'll also assume that this method was not used because it was the best way to do things, but because it was the only way to record the acoustic drums on an 8 track recording without only placing two mikes in the room, and hitting record. Mixing the drums down to two tracks reduces the sound quality of the drums and the rest of the recording. This just goes to prove my point, where I said that acoustic drums are hard to record in a "cheap"/"small" recording studio. I have recorded in a "good" 24 track studio by the way, and my drum tracks were not mixed down to two tracks. Once again, as far as I know, this method is used when you run out of tracks, and is not the preferred method. Also, if you think that stacking tracks on an 8 track is as good as using a 24 track studio, you are sadly mistaken.

    Charlie

Around 25 minutes long, continuation of original "Metropolis", yes it has a point. Why would a DT song be 25 minutes of wanking? EVERY Dream Theater song has a long and complex point :) >PS In #3392, when Vince said "peace love and good happiness stuff" was >that Steve Vai?

Just a slight correction here. I believe the original poster was asking about the difference between the English and German releases of LATM... And, as someone responded, there is no difference in the tracklist. However, there is a difference between the Japanese version and the european versions.. The japanese version has "Another Day" while the European versions have "Surrounded". BTW, if you really need to own this version of "Another Day" you can get it off the Lie UK Import CD Single.

    >At least the wooden drumsticks >will dent first, before you break a cymbal. (BUY VIC FIRTH, THEY LAST >FOREVER!!)

It also makes a huge difference from which wood your drumsticks are made of.I found that out the hard(and expensive)way. You see, I use three different stick sizes.5b´s for prog,3a´s for power metal and 5a´s for jazz and fusion.I went to my local drumstore to buy some drumsticks and figured I should buy many pairs this time because I always run out of them.So I bought a pair of 3a´s(made from hickory) and 5 pairs of 5b´s(made from oak).I broke ALL pairs of 5b´s in one month while i´m still using the same pair of 3a´s.They´ve lasted for 2 months now...And considering that power metal really requires lot of power to play while prog doesn´t you can probably guess which wood is better.

On to another subject. This goes to all the finnish jammers out there. if you like jazz and classical music, you should check out Trio Töykeät:Sisu-album.It kicks ass!

So I bought a pair of 3a=B4s(made from hickory) and 5 pairs of 5b=B4s(made from oak).I broke ALL pairs of 5b=B4s in one=20 month while i=B4m still using the same pair of 3a=B4s.They=B4ve lasted for 2= =20 months now...And considering that power metal really requires lot of=20 power to play while prog doesn=B4t you can probably guess which wood is=20 better.

**I can understand your pain. It sucks when you spend so much money for drumsticks and they don't last. I have played with many brands: Promark, decent..IMHO break way too fast HotSticks, decent, they break quick Vic Firth, IMHO, the best! My friend knows Vic personally. That's not the reason why I buy them. I buy them because they are worth every penny I put into them. I got a pair about 3 years ago..I just broke them last week! Zildjian: These are by far the worst the I have ever used. Ludwig: These are right up there as the worst that I have ever used. =20 I also use Hotrods a lot. I think that MP uses these (or equivelent) on TAMP. The sound is similar to what I get when I use these. I have 2 different sizes. These unfortunately don't last long (for me) and basically, IMO, are used stictly for sound, not durability. I use: 5B for Prog. 7A for jazz/fusion/big band 2B for thrash/Hardcore 5A for practice
