what do you think was on DT's mind when they wrote metropolis, how they're gonna
focus on bringing through the story, or how they're gonna show off with the middle
section (no flames required, thank you very much ;)?

My point is, it seems like they don't put as much thought into the lyrics as they
put into the music; the focus of their songs is on the music, not on the message.
yes, the lyrics might be moving and thoughtful, but they're not the most important
    thing about the song...

I remember a quotation saying that DT almost gave up on finding a vocalist when they
got james' audition tape...it doesn't seem to me like they were desperate to get
a vocalist and bring their lyrical message through...

I don't know about these guys. My friend lent me his tape of them and I
thought it was just your average prog band trying to have that DT/Fates
Warning feel. These guys try to hard and the end result is not very
original sounding. That's why I'm a bit wary these days of buying prog
before hearing it. I bought some prog CDs in the past (4 actually) where
    I've been disappointed.

I broke a pair also, sent them in for a replacement, and received a

return, with a note saying, that the 2B's are supposed to be a little

okay, here's a couple of SX reveiws from their web page:
    http://www.fortunecity.com/tinpan/wellerville/3/guybrush.html

    SYMPHONY X "The Damnation Game"
    Inside Out Music
Released back in 1995, with this album Symphony-X started to reveal the
colossal musical potential they possesed. One of the best
characteristics about this band is an incredible songwriting ability to
composite very well arranged songs with memorable melody lines and
refrains of great beauty. Compared to their latest release, also
reviewed in this issue, "The Damnation Game" offers the same clean
sound and excellent musicianship. Michael Romeo's guitars are without a
doubt the driving force for most songs, giving a well-conceived
heaviness and agressiveness. A semblance with a mix between a
progressive Malmsteen, Kansas, latest Savatage and Dream Theater could
be made to describe this very good album. Rusell Allen harmonic vocals
are simply brilliant. Lyrics, with high poetical content, is also an
aspect which has to be remarked. Cuts such as "The Edge Of Forever",
"The Haunting", "Winter's Dream or "Whispers" make one thinking about
Symphony X as one of the metal bands with a highest quality and some of
the most colorful power melodic music which can be found nowadays.
    4 1/2

SYMPHONY X "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy"
    Inside Out Music
This US technical metal band third and latest effort shows great
songwriting, good musicianship all around and some unique sounding
songs. There are excellent tracks like "Sea Of Lies" or "Of Sins And
Shadows" which would fit into the category of technical heavy metal a
la Stratovarius with a progressive touch on keyboards, while others
like the "The Witching Hour" and "Out Of The Ashes" have a pretty deep
neoclassical feel that might remind the listener a bit of Yngwie
Malmsteen, particulary on the chorus lines. The "magnus opus" of this
album is a twenty minutes-long impressive track which gives title to
the CD, featuring great choir arrangements and superb instrumental
guitar parts plenty of variation. Rusell Allen vocals are very solid,
with a really wide range. He's capable of singing with a strong sense
of melody and clean on memorable songs as "The Accolade" (my personal
favourite) or in the beautiful "Candleligth Fantasia" (close to
Savatage's Zack Stevens sometimes) and of sounding rawer and much more
agressive on tracks like "Pharaoh" or "The Eyes Of Medusa" for
instance. Highly recommended for lovers of technical metal and very
    pulished and elaborated works.

Neat to hear all the mixing talk, since I'm about to venture towards that

the drumb by mixing down from 8 to 2 tracks is on (I assume) analog

tracks. Mostly asking since I'm getting the Akai 12-track digital recorder

Definitely. I actually think they're a lot better than Helloween, which used
to be one of my favorites. Kai Hanson's involvement probably has a lot to do
with the similarity. Which two did you get? (I'm guessin' Holy Land and
Angels Cry). Reaching Horizons and Freedom Call are great EPs as well.

As it is a fan club cd there is no 'official release', no I haven't got my
copy and I am pissed off about it and the fact the that us FC members
have not been informed about the delay, for the last two years the winter
edition of the fanzine has arrived before Christmas.
I don't think we can blame the busy period for mail either, yesterday i
received my Fish fanzine from Scotland, which took 6 days as opposed to the
    normal
    7 days.

Both Angra albums were recorded at Kai's studio in Germany and Kai
appears on 'Never Understand' towards the end with a guitar solo.
I agree, when Helloween were great during the 'Keeper' era they ruled
I think that they were almost a 'progressive speed metal' band. When
Kai left the band died and IMO without him they were never the same
band. Angra I think have more talent and potential in them though.

That's not necessarily the case IMO, if you continue to break down the
tracks you can lose sound quality just like you can with analog. Make a
back up copy and try it out. Sometimes you can have luck, other times you
can't. With Digital you will have MUCH better luck with mixing it down,
not to mention you will have better luck fixing something that you doesn't
    sound good. Later, J

    Hey All,
About an hour ago I heard, YNM on WAAF out of Worcester MA. The DJ remarked
after the song that they had just played the new Dream Theater because of
audience request. A few months ago I had been emailing the station a lot and
requesting DT. I even recieved an email from a DJ stating that there was a
lot of new music out there and that they couldn't play everything. After
sending a response, I gave up my campaign. Well I guess some of us were
persistent, because now they are playing DT. Too bad they have to play YNM
instead of BMS, which is much better.
As far as the controversey over the relevance of JLMB. I think the fact that
the references to Kurt Cobain and Shannon Hoon will become dated and
meaningless illustrates the point of the song. People will be turning their
backs on Kurt Cobain and Shannon Hoon for something new. When people are
still listening to JLMB and they have no idea who KC and SH are, the songs
prophecy will have come true. Hopefully DT will endure and bands like
Nirvana and Blind Melon will be forgotten.
    Merry Christmas,
    Mark

Just dropping the usual end-of-year holiday greeting to my friends on the Jam, and a thanks to all of you who have helped to make 1997 a good year for me. As others have said several times, the enrichment gained from being here, learning about other great bands besides DT, and meeting new friends at shows makes it all worthwhile -- even though sometimes the Ytsejam can be pretty crappy. :)

It's.....well, gee, how 'bout that, it's about 6:00 on a Christmas morning. :) Hope 1998 is a great year for all of us, and (mostly for us Americans) I hope Mr. Hankey thr Christmas Poo brings you everything you wanted for Christmas. :)

What, you thought I'd go to bed before 6:00 am? Not on Christmas morning, but then again, I have no life. :)
