Sorry to bring TON back up on the jam, but I have no where else to go. If
anyone has October Rust and a program to make sound files, I need a wav
of the part on "Be My Druidess" that says "I'll do anything to make you
come". I'l make it myself but I can only make wavs off CD and I only have
    OR on tape. thanks

For the most part, I agree with this guy. I&W is a lot smoother to me as
well. This is one of my gripes about Power of Omens (hi Dave.) They are
awsome musicians, but the transitions happen very abruptly and frequently.
I think certain time should be spent on a certain riff or groove. I mean,
anyway, how are you gonna keep coming up with new material if all of it
goes into 30-second segments of one song? I do enjoy awake, mainly Silent
Man, SDV, IF, and Erotomania, but the quality has gone down a bit. If you
listen to the rhythm guitar, there ar a lot more one note type rifs, that
is, no chordal stuff like I&W. I like the more Rush-influenced stuff.
Despite all this, though, William, isn't 15% of a Jam a little much? Just
chastizing gently, not flaming. Be well.
    Anxiously awaiting,
    Matt B

    Heya folks-

I am in this class at school called "research methods in psychology."
The course requires a major research paper on a topic that interests me. I
was thinking about doing something relating to music since I love music so
    damn much.

One possible idea is the effects of certain kinds of music on people and
possible physiological reactions to the music. Then there's a topic of the
effect of music while studying. If anybody has any other ideas that
they think would work, please email me as I have to come up with a topic
within a week. Thanks a lot.

they're not going back to I&W anywhere i can see, its covered ground, its
why skid row doesnt make albums full of high vocals and love songs, they rip
your balls off now, dt is growing and evolving, i&w was a half a decade ago,
i cant wait for the new album. i dont really enjoy comparing music, and
overanalyzing, i just throw it on and look for whats good in it, theres
usually quite a bit, especially in DT.. theres no judge of quality. there
is no quality. no syle, no rules; only interpretation.

i also add the possibility that a point missed in every instance is a point
not well displayed. jam on :)

Well, David Prater (I&W & ACOS) also did the most recent Night Ranger album,
the one without Jack Blades (although now he's rejoined them). So DT
doesn't have to stick with prog producers. It's not a bad album either. And
yes, the drums are triggered on it.

Personally, I'd love to see Michael Wagner do the album.

Wait - *I* have now fallen prey to the incredible catching, spreading,

Repeat after me, "Dick Dick Dick." Soon it will just be another syllable

    Hey Jammerz -

While we all sit and stew about the continued absence of a new Dream
Theater disc, I was hoping one of you could help me out. I apologize that
this does not deal with Dream Theater, but I am DESPERATELY searching for
Cliff Burton's last Metallica gig from Stockholm on CD (the entire 90 minute
show, preferably). I can't remember exactly the date of the gig, but it was
on the "Master Of Puppets" tour, and it was his final gig before his tragic
death. I have the show on tape, and I think it was taken from a vinyl
source, but I need it on CD. The show was KILLER! Anyway, sorry for wasting
DT space, but if anyone can help, or knows somebody that can help, please
E-Mail me privately with prices or details. Thanx, Jammerz! Rock on...

Today I was listening to a Queensryche boot of the PL tour,
and I was struck by how much Geoff Tate's voice had declined
over the years. This was made especially clear because also on
this tape was included (thanks, Chuck) some material from the Warning
tour (or pre tour - he mentions "forthcoming lp") and while the sound
quality of the latter boot paled in comparison to the former, Tate's voice
was hitting all the highs. I actually booed at the cassette deck in my car
when he (on the PL tape) copped out of the "Take Hold of the Flame"
screech and left it alone. My belabored (or belaboured) point of this is a
simple question: Why does the range of the rock vocalist (I also submit
Bruce Dickinson - listen to boots from 80-83) decline so with age? I understand
it could be a combination of factors which have been mentioned in the past
such as overuse (Bruce sang about 400 dates on the World Slavery Tour),
bad habits, and the challenge of performing in front of amplified musicians, but
I wonder if it could also be genetics. I notice Pavorotti has lost some range,
but he is WAY out of shape, and damn old. Apples and Oranges, most likely.
To link this to the marginal DTC I advertised, I wonder whether this same
phenomenon will befall James LB. It may be too soon to tell, but he is
near the age of Tate and Dickinson, though I doubt he has performed the
sheer number of dates they have. I also wonder why the vocalist can't
be "turned up" so to speak in order that he need not sing so loudly. Is it a
matter of hearing oneself in the mix? You can tell I am not a musician by
these layman-like questions and observations, but when some vocalists
decline, and others do not (Halford, for example), I, like the lyrics to an
    obscure
Flotsam and Jetsam tune, wonder why I wonder why why why. Ok. Good night.

Let he who is not a dick cast the first....well, nevermind.

    > Do you realize what a cash cow you're missing here? With the
resurgence of bands like Van Halen, Metallica, Queensryche, Motley Crue,
Megadeth, etc. the genre of heavy metal is steadily gaining ground on
alternative pop music. Another big genre is that of progressive rock which
is spearheaded by bands such as Rush and Dream Theater. These bands have
sold millions upon millions of albums worldwide and they all keep their fans
in stitches waiting for new releases. Being as technically proficient as
they are, and now that their songs are getting heavier, Dream Theater could
very well be THE BAND that launches metal back into popular status. If you
don't put them in the studio soon, they're probably going to give up on your
company and take their music elsewhere. Can you imagine how stupid
East/West would look if Dream Theater went to another label and sold 10
million copies? People would say,"Well, how come they couldn't do this with
East/West Records? Same band. East West MUST be an inferior company."
    > Do you really want people saying that. That could be the end of

Hey all! Long time since I've posted on this list, but I just wanted to put
in a good word or 2 for this album. I just got it a couple of days ago, and I
think I've listened to it about a zillion times already. This album is simply
*incredible*! The instrumentals (Mozart & Madness, Christmas Eve) kick some
major ass, and the little "Ode To Joy" piece, Memory, is just *too* cool! The
end of Not What You See, with all the layered vocals, sends chills up my spine
everytime I hear it. It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard!
I remember around Christmas, someone on the list said that you should only
get DWD if you're really into classical music. I would have to disagree with
this statement. While I don't hate classical (my dad listens to a lot of Mozart
and Beethoven), it's not exactly the type of stuff I normally listen to, and
as I've already said, I love DWD. I think that most fans of DT's music would
    really appreciate this album.
So in summary, if you don't already have this album, what the hell are you
waiting for man?! Go get it now! You won't be disappointed.

I can't help but AGREE with you... :) I was at Impulse a few weeks ago (yes,
same Impulse that does the mail order stuff) and they said "Here, you'll
like this, this is REALLY like old Queensryche stuff". And, yes, it was. A
little TOO much! They had "QR chords", "QR changes", and even a false Geoff
Tate! However, it just sounded TOO false...left a bad taste in my mouth... :P

(Which, of course, I will need some Veryfine Fruit Punch to rinse my mouth
    out with... *grin*)

Whew, yourself! Do you have a personal vendetta against Chris because he
    doesn't agree with you???

*Madelaine attacks Billy-boy with a nit comb...

Ooh! Look, everyone!! Gather round!! I found that William has CLAY FEET!!! Ooh!

Sorry, but I do get rather offended when people turn a rather interesting
debate to an attack on personal character. What you did was really uncalled for.

    On the DTC homefront...
Do we have any game programmers out there?? Because we could all work
together and make a DT game, sort of like the Queensryche "Promised Land" CD
    rom! :) Here, I've got Kai's Bryce to make neat Myst-esque landscapes...all
we need is to kidnap the band for a week and make live video clips to
embed... And then we could include the new album as Disc 2! Hmm.. "Dream
Theater: The Search for Reasonably-Priced Studio Time!"

    *grin*

Someone suggested this and actually thought he would have to don
a flame-proof suit for even the thought. Man, if you have ever listened
to Blind Guardian, for which he is the producer, at least lately, you
would see that your idea is quite a valid one. Sure, many have complained
about AJFA's "wide" bass tone, etc, but I think this would be a very
interesting, though unlikely, choice for producer. Listen to Imaginations
