Geoff Tate smokes cigarettes!! This could be a big reason why he has lost it. I noticed his vocal decline started around the early Mindcrime years. I don't think that its age though ( look at Halford, he will go sharp or flat here and there but man, he can still WAIL ! )

Ray Alder still smokes but I think he is far better now than he was 6 years ago??? ( strange )

ok, i've had enough.
i make a post, chris responds to my post. chris's response to my post is completely unrelated to my main point: quality. chris accuses me of insulting people. chris then insults me by proclaiming to the 'jam that what i want from the band is the exact opposite of everything i said in my post. i reply to this ignorant and insulting post. chris gets pissed. i think it's funny, he sends me private email in which he continues to fail to understand and flames me more. since this was private email, i figure fine, he has declared war. so i send him private email. chris then posts to the jam calling me a dick and offering to send people my response to his flame.
my solution? i don't care. have him send it to you. make sure you read the parts i quoted, as well.
i personally don't care anymore. if anyone wants to read what i sent to chris, fine, knock yourself out. if anyone wants to flame me for it, that's fine to. do your worst.
and you know what? i'm sick of this crap.

Of course, they warned me (I was on vocal music scholarship) that many rock vocalists had to have callouses removed from their vocal chords because of this. I (in an extremely diplomatic way) told them I wanted to continue rock singing & my scholarship, so they told me to beware of screaming that forces through the throat. I know each of the vocalists that you mentioned had vocal training far beyond my humble travels, so I'll bet they are aware of the same things I mentioned. There could be many other factors: smoking, so many performances in a row, etc. Just my $0.02 (BTW, I abandoned my school days for a stint in the USMC, which practically ruined my vocal music voice, & then graduated in EE. First and foremost, I received e-mail from someone recently asking me for the phone number to call for DT's vocalist auditions. I asked him why he thinks DT would possibly be auditioning vocalists, and he said a friend of his has already auditioned for JP. Someone tell me what to tell this guy, so that he believes (as I assume) that JLB is still very much a member of DT.
Next, I just got Spock's two new albums in the mail today: "The Official Live Bootleg" and "Beware of Darkness" (the follow up to "The Light." Clever, huh? :) GO GET THIS STUFF!!!!! It's outstanding. You've already heard a great deal about these guys on this list. If you want more info, feel free to e-mail me, and I will rave about them at length. My alma mater, Molloy College in Rockville Centre, NY has a degree program in Music Therapy. I'm not totally clear on what they learn, but I know it has to do with using music as a therapeutic tool for people such as hospital patients and the elderly. Try looking into that. BERND! Why dontcha get that Robert Kohlmeyer to record it with your guys help. Goodness, your album is one of the best and most well-produced sounding albums I've heard in ages. Paul O'Neill could have done no better, imo. You can actually pick each individual instrument out of the mix without a conflict from the others. Amazing... (Another plug for Bernd!)

Please don't say anything to the company about them being stupid for holding up the process (even though I think they are, too) I recommend that we be as professional and responsible as we can about this. Calling them names may be the fly in your ointment.

Hrm.... I've come to notice that people have lost the right to proclaim their own opinion on this place. It's real sad. Unless it's proportionate to what the majority of the jam likes, this person is hammered into submission. I agreed with most everything he'd said, too. Except the Magna Carta thing. I'd hate to see Dream Theater get any heavier than they already are. And I'd like some more prominant keyboards in the mix. I'm not a great fan of the distorted hammonds and all that, bit if DT wants to go that route I'm not going to bitch anymore about it. I still really like Images and Words, but I don't expect them to go back to that. I just hope they don't leave it all behind. A band still needs to cling to it's roots every once in awhile.
Anyway, I hate to see people unsubscribe no matter how much anyone else on the jam hates their guts. I'm not sure that Damon Fabrario <sp?> is still here but I can't blame him for leaving. He was at a bad point in his life and Barfu felt like taking him down a notch lower. I know he had put you (Chris) on the defensive and that a general name calling match got thrown in the works. What the hell is wring with letting people state their opinions and get the hell on with your lives? Nobody cares what anyone else thinks. If we start acting that way then we all might as well follow the alternative trend-mongers and go to every Lollapalooza concert. I don't want to see this happen here. We're better folks than that. At least I've always come to this conclusion, don't make me come to another, please

Well, in Geoff's case i think its because he smokes... I am pretty sure i read that in an article sometime ago. If this is not true, please tell me because i am not positive.

Hi all!
I just wanted to let you know, that I heard that DT's finished up writing yet another song *musically* (finished it up yesterday). I got this news from a *very* reliable source. As to how long it is, I forgot to ask. No name was given it as there's no lyrics *yet* but if I hear something before anyone else, I'll post it.
I also asked if there's any plans for an instrumental on this one and was told they like to plan those out for every-other-album.
