quite a while a go, you wrote about Mozart...

RTB produced several of Queen's albums.
that could be where you heard/saw the name.
among other places.
I'm sure he did other bands, but can't tell you what they are.
(well, I *could* tell you, but then I'd have to kill you... =)

hey, it came up on irc that i found this ytsejam now! logo, kind of in the
vein of netscape, but didnt resemble it in any way... so i went into paint
shop pro, and whipped up our own little "ytsejam now!" logo to link to the
official homepage (http://www.rsabbs.com/dt) and put it up for all to see,
its on my main homepage, which is
http://www.inlink.com/~ripzero
and if you dont have a graphic browser but you can see graphics on your comp
and want to take a look, just email me and i'll attach it and send it to
you. i think it looks good, i'm real happy with how it came out, hope you
all dig, and if you want to use it (i hope you do:) then i just ask ya
please use this html tag to do it:
<a href="http://www.rsabbs.com/dt"><img
src="http://www.inlink.com/~ripzero/images/yjnow.gif" border=0 alt="Ytsejam
NOW!"></a>
that way you dont even have to upload the image into your own web directory,
just hatchet it off mine. i'd love some comments if ya check it out :)

As far as I'm concerned, so be it. I have a lot of musical likes/dislikes
that fly in the face of what this list believes: I don't like Rush,
Marillion, or Yes. I only like one Queensryche album (O:m). I like Dream
Theater because they are a metal band that's doing something that catches
my attention. They stand out from the crowd.
I realize that having opinions like these are bound to make me unpopular
with some people here. While I haven't yet encountered a pure flame-fest, I
know I probably will (probably right after I post this. :)). But frankly, I
don't much care. I'm not too thin-skinned to let people bother me.
To many of the problems on this list come from too much posturing and
attitude. People saying "I don't want to repond here, but....." and then
responding. Too many verbal cockfights, nobody's ever willing to just let a
counter-productive thread lie.
It reminds me of a communications course I took in college: one day, the
professor paired us off, and had us face one another with a line drawn on
the floor between us. The object was for each person to get the other one
over to the other side of the line. Naturally, most of the people started
physically pulling of the other person to try and yank them over. After a
couple of minutes, the professor stopped us and told us the best solution
to the problem: for each person to voluntarily step over the line. No
conflict, no violence, everyone succeeds. That's what needs to happen here
more often, but too many people are afraid to stop pulling.
Sorry to ramble, but maybe it'll help. (well...)

Actually, I'm sure that he produced more, but I know he produced at
least the first three albums by The Cars (The Cars, Candy-O, and
Panarama). After that, Rik Ocasek started doing most of their mixing
and production work.

Hey guys, isn't it so cool when you're wearing some DT stuff and then
someone else, a complete stranger brings up to you that he's another DT
fan? Well, a couple weeks ago I was at Blockbuster Video and an employee
noticed that I was either wearing a DT hat or shirt (I forgot already). I
just thought it was so cool. And he said that he's another ytsejammer, so
I'm just sayiing hi Ian (I think that's your name).
Has this happened to anyone else on the jam, just wearing DT stuff and then
some complete stragner start a conversation with you just because you're
wearing some DT stuff?
Heath Augustover
p.s. I'm also saying hi to a dude that I saw walking around Nassau
Community College the very first day of classes in the fall semester with a
ytsecon shirt on. I saw you wearing it, I was just too far away to say hi
to you. :)

Here is an idea. Let's go with Peter Collins who produces Rush. He is very
creative as you can see with the complexity of Rush's newer stuff. They
just keep getting better. I would love to see what he can do with DT. Just

We all have opinions; here's mine.
I think that when you state your opinion and get a reply, you don't have
to repeatedly say "You didn't get my point" and start calling other
people dicks. If you run into someone contradicting you, don't throw a
flame. You should debate, IMO. I think it's good for the digest when
we disagree and have an intelligent conversation, especially when it's
about Dream Theater. :) I think we should just try to get our points
across the best we can and go back and forth as much as we want -- as
long as we're adding something relative to Dream Theater discussion.
(author descends from soap box)
I have two cents on the I&W/Awake concept. DT obviously progressed; the
nice thing about progression is that you can go in any direction and bet
the house that your not going backwards. I think Awake sounds choppy,
but I love it. It's angry and takes sharp turns, takes you from
serenity to a fitful wrath. It's the fine art of moodwise madness. One
part that I used to find annoying, but now find charming in a
in-love-with-a-serial-killer sort of way is the abrupt key change from
the bridge to the chorus in Innocence Faded. It's the same thing with
Erotomania, where they play the 10/8 riff and make the 4th measure 9/8.
Of course, there are examples of this on I&W, but that has less of a
madness quality and more of a beautiful/intelligent quality to me,
probably because it's not as dark.
On another note, I need some help. I love the music of passionate
progressive bands, but relatively few are signed to major labels or get
airplay. Bands such as Dream Theater, Rush, Queensryche, Yes, et cetera
stir me in a way that most mainstream music cannot. I get an
unexplainable sensation whether listening to "Take The Time", "Tears",
or "Screaming In Digital". If you know what I'm talking about, please
e-mail me the names of some little-known, but accessible
bands/artists/albums that make you feel the same way. I've heard of
Spock's Beard on the list, and I'll be checking them out. Something has
to pacify me through the DT hiatus.

songs. A few weak ones like my own "Metcockolis I" came out, but then it

Yes, I have some very strong thoughts on smoking and singing. Anyone
that wants to be a vocalist (in *ANY* style of music) and is stupid
enough to smoke cigarettes (as I have been) ought to be prepared to face
the fact that the quality of the voice will suffer tremendously. Those
of you that have heard what I recorded with my band Polio Dog in the
summer of 1995 and what I've recorded with Nine Miles in the winter of
1997 might notice a change in my voice. God knows I've noticed. I find
it hard to sing the PDog stuff anymore. I've lost some range, and I've
lost some power.
Add to all that the fact that I have never had the first day of formal
voice training. Not only am I screwing around with my instrument, but
I've never learned how to use it properly, and I'm probably hurting it in
two ways. I have over time learned how to control my voice somewhat.
There was a time where I wouldn't be able to speak out loud for a day or
two after performing. I realized how *bad* that was, and tried to change
my style of singing so that I actually sing, rather than screaming pitches.
But, to get back to my initial point, smoking is dumb, and smoking and
attempting to maintain a good singing voice is even dumber.

I made the written point that I'll be the last to tell someone what to listen to, and I defend anyone's right (you've seen posts from me proving so) to like whatever they want and dislike whatever they want. I took this flame war off the jam without even posting my own flame. I took his shit and brought it to private e mail. I posted to the jam because I know some sick individuals find me amusing, and I wanted them to know that they were welcome to get my input on the situation. >have fun. i'm sorry i ever considered that someone (well, ok, one >person) might have a clue about what i'm talking about. So am I, because when I can make sense of everything else I read, (which includes everything from classic literature to ebonic bullshit) if you say I had no clue what you were talking about it's because it wasn't in english, or because you're grasping at straws and arguing in circles. I made every attempt to be civil.

I don't want anyone to unsubscribe. >know he had put you (Chris) on the defensive and that a general name >calling match got thrown in the works. NO. I will accept NO blame for the name calling match. I was perfectly civil in my post. He went off. > What the hell is wring with >letting people state their opinions and get the hell on with your >lives? Nobody cares what anyone else thinks. If I didn't care what he thought, I wouldn't have responded. I didn't tell him to give up his opinion. I stated my reasoned disagreement. "What the hell is wrong" with me stating my opinion and getting the hell on with my life? It's because you have to walk on god damn egg shells around here so no one will complain. Now I know the stress Bafu was going through a few months ago. Listen... if you guys want me off the jam, for any reason, let me know and I'm gone. It's that simple. I don't think I did anything wrong here. I took plenty of time, didn't respond immediately, and asked him to be cool. I even offered the e mail handshake of peace. There is absolutely nothing more I could have done, except not disagree, which would seem to me to be a rule no one should have to live up to. If anyone wants to do me and the jam a favor I ask THIS of you: If you want to discuss this or any of my recent NDTC posts with me, to tell me I'm right, wrong, arrogant, amusing, or just plain good lookin', PLEASE respond to me in email. NOT through the jam. This is where I end this particular episode of the ytse soap opera (since I'm seeming to be the director of this episode). Please, don't post anything about this post or the recent issue that's meant to make me mad or to make me unsubscribe. Flames belong in private e mail. I will repeat my readiness to unsubscribe if that's what you want. Just don't make me waste anymore bandwidth.
