            Hi all!!

I have a favor to ask of anyone who can provide it. I wanted to
get a copy of the video for Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" for Melissa for
Valentine's day. The one with all the animation that was borrowed (I
think) from Gundam. Anyone got it? I'd be willing to compensate you in any
    reasonable way...

Also, on the CD front, the first few Precious Things should be
squeaking out within the next 10 to 15 days or so.

    Take it easy all!!

    Regarding a DT Tribute:

As someone has said, this has been tried before quite unsuccessfully.
HOWEVER, this may actually get pulled off because an actual, real-life,
honest-to-god studio has been donated. This is the key, and any
efforts to pull this off should be centered around getting people
together in Arizona. Past efforts have sizzled and died because
there was no way to get the instruments recorded or people together.

So a tip to those organizing this (sorry, I'm no musician and will be
content to just watch from the sidelines, unless of course you'd be
interested in a mediocre clarinet player) - forget asking for volunteers
for instruments. Half of the people volunteering probably won't be able
to make it to Arizona at all. I think you would have much better luck
asking one and only one question:

    Can you come to Arizona?

If you can, then great: come on down and play whatever the hell you
want. Now I don't know many details about the studio that is being
volunteered. Do you need to pay for the amount of time you use it?
Or is this your own personal stuff that people can come and use at
any time? If it is the latter, then this venture has REAL potential.

Over the next year, we could put out a call to arms that any and all
ytse-musicians plan a trip to Arizona. Bring your instruments and
record whatever track of whatever song you want to perform. As we
go along, you could send announcements to the ytsejam like, "WE NEED
DRUMS FOR TTT!!!" to let people know what songs are short one or
two tracks. I imagine there will be a few songs that everyone will
want to perform on, and you'd have no trouble getting parts recorded.
But the ytsejam list could be used to flesh out those songs that
    aren't quite complete.

After a year or so (or whatever amount of time you'd want to allot
to make this happen, but I think you'd need at least a year), then you
simply mix the best tracks of each song. Yes, there's a chance that
some people might not get any of their performances into the final
cut. But hey, you're not doing this for your own glory, but for the
love of Dream Theater. I should still think this would be a blast to
do no matter how it turned out.

If this setup isn't possible (ie, the studio time is limited due to cost
restraints or due to the studio-owner's reluctance to have tons of
strangers stay at his house throughout the year), then plan B would be to
set one date for everyone to get together. As someone mentioned, this
would be a great opportunity for a YtseConIV. Once everyone's there you
simply determine what songs you'll be able to record based on what people
can play with whatever instrument they brought. I imagine that far fewer
songs would get recorded in this plan, but it would certainly be alot
    of fun. ;)

Make no mistake: Setting this up is going to be a HUGE venture, and I
wish everyone involved the best of luck. But history is against you,
and you need to decide how you're going to handle this. Making the
wrong decision, or putting the decision off too long, will doom it to
    failure.

    Jim

    I'm _there_, dudes (and dudettes!)

The band won't mind... these are covers, after all. Though we'd better not have any grandiose marketing plans for it.

I'm going to bring along a DAT of the internet Tori Amos tribute, and force everyone to listen to it, so we will know what NOT to do.

I can do the basslines for Pull Me Under, Take The Time, The Silent Man, most of Scarred (I'll pick up the rest as we go) and most of Metropolis (including that obscene tapping part). I'm not a bad sling at the guitar either, so I'll give it a whack. If I'm _healthy_ I can sing. In tune, even!! :) Also, I vote we do the Electric Silent Man.

Hey Jammers....If you haven't heard by now, there is a petition to help roll DT along in the studio. All of this is done in the hopes that the recording process gets sped up, so we, the ever-so-vocal and die-hard fans (probably the most loyal fans in the history of music...except for Beatlemania and Deadheads :) can have some brand spanking new music from our beloved DT. All you have to do is go to http://www.prognosis.com/petition and fill out the petition form, or get the printout form which you can fill out in ink, and mail in to a designated address. I think real signatures may have more impact than electronic media. Anyhow, for the benefit of all music and DT lovers out there, please visit the site, and fill out the petition.

    Hey all!!

I live in Phoenix and play bass, so I'd be more than happy to play bass parts on anything, really. I'm sure that Metropolis might have to be recorded at different times during the year (say, like, now, and then the solo about a few months/years from now when I can actually play it ;) What happened to The Mirror/Lie? I've got a 5stg, what about you gittar players (7stgs, anyone?)!?!?!?!! Ooops, did I say anything? Umm, Ytsejam could use some work, too ;) I think that Pull Me Under would be a good one to start with. Hector, where is your studio?

If you all are talking about making it a double CD why not instead of covering more DT songs get some of the guys and "chicks" participating some exposure. I am not contributing but I like the idea and I think if the contributors have a band that fits the "style" and they have original material than this would be a great opportunity for good exposure. Just either see if Hector wouldn't mind donating the studio for ONE song from the bands or if they have their own recording of CD QUALITY already or can produce it. Then take that and make another CD to distribute with the tribute. This would be great exposure and we can all agree that we NEED more progressive bands like DT, QR, and the rest. We all know they are out there but the record companies don't see a big "MTV" following so they don't give a shit. With this Idea it is possible to get some good bands some "props". If there is a huge need for a engineer though i doubt there will be I have some limited engineering experience mostly live sound though, but I would be more than happy to help.

I have a question about the petition:

I don't know, but Mike Bahr explained the situation as changes in the personell at Eastwest. So what would a petition do? I don't think it would speed up anything. This isn't the same situation with the ACOS EP. First off, the management and the band WANT this LP to come out. With ACOS, the record company didn't really care if it came out or not. So if anybody can shed some light and tell me the usefulness of this particular petition, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
