I'm one of the people in the camp that thinks this line is a little out of
place. I think it does tend to make the song a little "periodic".
I don't think that's a problem though, after seeing the Fix for '96 shows.
The way the band changed arrangements, added bits, moved things around and
such, showed that they are not afraid to do what's needed to keep the older
material from stagnating. I believe that if they're still touring when 2000
rolls around (of course they will, I know, I know... :)), they'll do what
they think best fits. Personally, I'd change the line, but then, I didn't
write it, so there's no emotional involvement.

re: cover versions
I prefer bands to do cover songs in their own style, irregardless of how
close or how far from the original it gets. For example: If DT and FW were
to both cover the same Rush song, I'd expect the DT version to be heavier
than the original because DT is a heavier band. In the same vein, I think
the FW version would be much closer to the original because the
styles/sounds are much closer.
Simple really: Heavy bands do heavy versions, blues bands do blues versions,
reggae bands......It's much more fun to see how a song fits within a band's
framework than the other way around, only because songs are generally much
more malleable than bands are.

Here is my new weekly posting about how to get the most
(or least if you don't like us) out of the ytsejam. This will
be coming out weekly (hopefully) at least for a while since we are
quickly gaining subscribers since school is now back in session.
I may post it less often after a while, but for now, it will be

To get on to the Dream Theater Mailing List:

For the subject of the message put:

replace Your Name with your real name (eg: Ryan Skadberg).
You should recieve a confirmation letter in the your
mailbox within 24 hours. If you do not, mail

There are many files kept by the mailing list server.
The biggest group are old issues of the jam. It is
archived since 1275. If you are looking for an issue
earlier than that, please mail ytsejam-owner@ax.com and
I will see what I can do. There are also other files
kept on the server. These include Mike Bahr CD Updates,
The "UnOfficial" Dream Theater SongBook and some others.
Any time I add something I usually send a post to the
jam so everyone knows about it. To get a list of the
files available from the server:

For the subject of the message put:

This will send you a list of all the files available from
the server. To retrieve one of these files:

In place of filename, put the name of the file you

Basic Rules:
There are some basic rules to the jam which make everyone's
reading alot more pleasant. Please try and follow them as
closely as possible. I will send out warnings to people
who blatantly disobey these. You get one warning, a second
offense will get your jam priviledges taken away.
1. Do not post just for the sake of posting. There is already
a lot of valid traffic on this list, we don't need unnecessary
posts which are a waste of everyone's time. The basic rule
you should all try to follow is to think before you post.
2. No Top Ten (Five, Twenty, Thirty, etc) lists. These lists
are a waste. They take up alot of bandwidth and fill up
everyone's mailbox much faster than they would like it filled
up. If you want to know everyone's top somethings, please ask
for ALL responses to be mailed directly to you. This has been
done with the end results posted to the jam and it was very very
nice.
3. Do not start / participate in / complain about long off-topic
discussions. These have gotten WAY out of hand in the past.
If one starts, I will post once saying to stop and take it to
private email, anyone continuing the discussion will
recieve a warning. These include such topics as God, NIN, Blind
Melon, bands selling out, etc.
4. Private E-Mail is a wonderful thing. Use it when you think it
may be more useful than posting to the jam.
5. Last, but not least, this is YOUR ytsejam. I am around,
and I do administrative work, but I do not say what can/cannot
be talked about (most of the time) or moderate in any real way.
I am the Ytsejam Administrator more than Moderator. Don't complain
if the jam seems to be going downhill, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
Basically, that is all the basic info. As always, if you have any
problems feel free to mail me. I get ALOT of mail on a daily basis,
so it sometimes takes me a while to get back to you, but 99% of the
time, I will get back to you eventually.

This is a message only directed to Ken Watters and Chris Oats. As far as the header goes, my CMOS was off in date and time. As for the note, yes I WAS serious about what I talked about. For some reason, ( all of a sudden ) I just remembered that James sang for CONEY HATCH back in the early 80's. This generates a couple of questions: 1.) Does anyone remember this? 2.) Does anyone HAVE any of it? 3.) Does anyone have any opinions on how it sounds? (is it worth looking for?)
They recorded 2 excellent and 1 average albums for Polygram in the the early 80's. JLB did NOT sing on any of them. The lead main vocalist was Carl Dixon with Andy Curran chipping in with some unusual vocals on a couple of trax. The band was managed by Ray Daniels/SRO

I'm not going to go too far into addressing this here, but I am quite sure that my response to his letter addressed only things that he said in his letter, not what my psychic friends told me to talk about. I don't know what everyone is thinking... only what they say. If I call you an asshole, it's because that's what I see you to be. That's what your letter (which whether you meant it to or not, spewed only condemnations and insults at a guy who is in no situation to deal with them) made you, as far as I'm concerned. If that's because you're incapable of expressing yourself in text, then perhaps I will recant. I don't decide if you're an asshole. You do. It is every jammer's right to flame when need be. And I never write without thinking (often without spell checking, yes). I will note that I had a good bunch of reponses to my posts by people who felt exactly the same as I do about what you said, and the moral integrity of someone who would make the statements you made in front of the entire jam (Erik included).
Having said that, I will silently debate over whether or not to reply to the rubbish Mr. Oates sent to me personally, or if I should wait and see if an eventual intelligent response comes my way.

"This band sucks" posts: this is a pretty open forum, and no-one should ever be flamed for posting -reasoned-, -thoughtful- opinions on a band. Merely saying a band sucks, though, without giving some reasons, could be grounds for some flamage. --But that's not what happened this last time; the chap who hated Marillion included some commentary as to why. Personally I'd have given them more time to grow on me and maybe listened to the whole album before damning it and their entire catalog and career into the nether hells, but.....
Band recommendations: I still recommend Superior's 'behind' as the best CD I heard during 1996. It's now available from Dream Disc in the US for less than $15, I understand. Please see www.crl.com/~vanyel/coolstuf.html#superior for the current info on where and how to get this most-excellent CD.
My Top 5 or so for 1996: +++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1) Superior, behind 2) Type O Negative, October Rust 3) Tool, Aenima 4) Lemur Voice, Insights 5) (lotsa ties) Rush T4E, Altura's Mercy, KoRn's Life is Peachy, TSO's Xmas CD, King's X's Ear Candy, and some others. I excepted the DT Xmas CD 'cause, well, it's an EP. :)
Here's hoping for two separate DT CDs released simultaneously this year, so they can be Numbers 1 and 2 on this list next January. :)
P.S.: Anyone know if Mike P. has an instructional drumming video coming out soon? I thought I heard a rumour about this. I mentioned it mostly as a joke to the proprietor of Atlanta Pro Percussion and he said "Whew, wish there was; there'd be a LOT of interest in it!" :)

I've never heard any prog. stuff with a female vocalist, but here's some good metal with a woman ahead:
The 3rd and the mortal. Norwegian band - hard to get in the states? - that are heavily influented by goth and folk music. They have two albums out that I know of - "Tears laid in earth" and "Painting on glass" - on Voices of Wonder. This is not a metal singer, it's a folk singer. She sing light and beautiful over a slow and heavy background. This is heavy, but it's also a little to much goth for me... I think... I've had their records for a year and I still don't know if it's just "good" or if it's "very good".
Mothers Finest, "Black radio won't play this record". MF started in the 70's playing R&B - soulfunk, slowed down during the 80's and finally popped up with a metal record in... I think it was -92. This thing GROOVES! A black female singer over a background that's made of extreme "funk-o-metal". I heard them live -93 and man, that was a trip! Wyzard - yes, he is called that (and I understand why) - on the bass is a true basshero, making incredible chops live, and their sound is heavy on the record and heavier still live. This is very good.
Othervise, the discussion of why women can/can't sing metal can be held endlessly... I think they can. Listen to MF if you doubt it.

Yes, I finally got the first Shadow Gallery and Magellan albums!
You can tell on the SG album that they were very under developed, I think the addition of Gary Wehrkamp on keys and Kevin Soffera on drums really helped them on their second (Carved in Stone).
The Magellan album (Hour of Restoration) kicks ASS! I think it's as good or better then the first. The only thing that I don't necessarily like about it, is that it has a couple of 2 minute songs....that sound lost, like they were with something or just added for the fun of it.
Check out Michelle Young for a female prog artist. She has her own CD out: Song of the Siren and also performs with Glass Hammer.

Hi All,
I'm a new member of this group, and I have to say that I like what I read. It's so hard to find decent music nowadays, that global help is highly appreciated. I'm a DT fan since someone told me to listen to I&W. (Of Course, I didn't keep this knowledge all to myself. I even 'opened a guys eyes' who was/is? a Alan Parsons/Barry Manilow fan by letting him listen to Space-Dye Vest ;you have to start careful! A week later he bought Awake, and he LOVES IT.)
I was VERY pleased reading that QR has a new album coming out.
DT INFLUENCE? One of the bands I really love (from way back) is SAGA. (Listen to SAGA and Silent Knight). Does anybody know if the guys from DT ever named this band as one of their influences? They have that simultaneous guitar/keyboard battles which you here often in DT, and their songs have a lot of mood changes.
