Judging from the Birch Hill turnout, I am going to assume that a lot of you
guys are in the NYC area. Can you tell me where you guys go for live music
(metal, rock, etc...). Eons ago, I went to L'amours in Brooklyn at least once
a week and got my fill of metal. Back then, bands like Anthrax, White Lion,
Badlands, Savatage, Manowar and bands of that stature would play there
regularly. Now that it's gone, I'm totally at a loss for where to go for
live music. Just wondering....thanks.

It a little bit of laziness, and a little bit of convenience. Personally, I
have no desire to type out the full title of "TOWHTSTS" every time I want to
discuss it. :) OTOH (On The Other Hand), I once saw someone use "SOC" as an
abbreviation for 6:00, so I do think it can be taken too far.
And why the hell is "abbreviation" such a long word anyway?

I don't know about an instructional video, but he is featured in a book
series called "Drum Lessons with the Greats 2." It features Tim
Alexander (Primus), Johnathon Moffett, Will Kennedy (Yellow Jackets),
Chris Parker, Mike Portnoy, and NIEL PEART. It also comes with two CD's
full of examples. I'm not a drummer, but I've listened through the
Portnoy section, and it's very interesting. His topics include: Odd
Approaches to 4/4, 5/4 time, Seven, 9/8, and Odd Approaches to Odd
Time. I'm sure much could be learned by studying the other guys'
lessons as well. I would urge any drummers to look around for it, as
well as other players interested in learning a bit.

hatch is a hard one to find, at least for me since i have checked on
both the east and west coasts for it but to no avail. also, does anyone
remember the name of the album/group that portnoy did the drums for (i
think prior to IMAGES & WORDS). im sure he only did one track on this
album and i think it had a black cover with red lettering. ive heard
the material so i know im not dreaming here but i cant remember the name
to save my life.

Thought i would throw this out here and see if it is worth my time
pursuing...if it hasnt been dont before, i have about 3 or 4 pictures
somewhere of the Dream Theater in Carmel, CA or wherever the hell it is.
This is, as most of you know, where Howard Portnoy, Mike's dad, came up
with the name for the band. I traveled there a few years back to this
"holy land" of sorts to check it out for myself. If there is sufficient
jam interest, i will scan these in and mail them to whoever wants em.
Let me know what you guys think and i will do the work.

Just came back from a trip to the beach (after all, it's summer
around here :) ), and couldn't wish that to you before, so, everyone
have a nadz rocking new year!
I'll just be on for this week, cause saturday night I'm boarding
to USA... :)
Taking a look at the last jams (no, I'll not read all that
stuff), I got into a Marillion thread... I heard one of them albums in a
store these days (I had never heard them before. Hmmm, in fact I had,
but didn't know it was them), and didn't like at all. It's just my
opinion. I'd say, too slow, they lack distorted guitars :). And, nmost
of all, the guy at the store said the album was cool, and I always take
that as a negative point to the band (usually when you ask "Do you have
any Dream Theater?" in a shop here they reply "Do I have WHAT?" :) ).

Yeah, I know, everyone is a complainer, but the Dream Theater is in Monterey, CA. Been there, sat it in, watched Pink Floyd's The Wall...way cool! Rocky Horror, too. Not sure if it is still open, haven't lived there in a while.

For those of you interested in old Metallica stuff, I ran across an album called "The Metallic-Era" that is a compilation of all the cover songs Metallica has done/does by the original groups. Hence you get Diamond Head's version of "Am I Evil?" and Blitzkrieg's version of "Blitzkrieg" among others, notably the original Garage Days set which is about the only way to get those songs unless you were smart enough to but the Garage Days album way back when. Anyway, check this out (if you can find it - cdnow doesn't have it BTW) if you want to hear some interesting early 80s metal.

As for Trans-Siberian Orchestra- I went out yesterday and couldn't find it ANYWHERE around here. I went to the mall, to Record Town, to Tape World, to Strawberry's, to Rockit Records, to Coconuts and to Newbury Comics (then in desperation to Lechemere. Hahaha.). No one had it. Damnit damnit damnit. Three places said that they had just sent back their Christmas stuff the day before, everyone else was sold out and wouldn't be getting any more in. So... if some kind soul out there (and I know there are hundreds here) knows where to get one, and would get me one, I would gladly pay for the CD and the postage. Or, if you have TSO and are willing to sell it, I would pay $10.00 for the CD and the postage. Now, could someone please post the track list from TSO? Thanks, fellow jammers.

Yes, that is most likly Derek Sherinian .... Al Pitrelli and Derek are good friends (played with Alice Cooper together, and also with their fun band Ethyl Mertz). This isn't the only time names were screwed up on the DWD Liner notes. My nome was spelled "Nathan Purdee" not even close to "Nathan Bradley".

The turn of the century happens on 2001, just for your information. :-) You know, the first century began with year 1, so the 21st must begin with year 2001.
It doesn't answer the question though. I've often wondered why people write lyrics that are actual only for some time. Dream Theater, good for them, have been able to avoid it for the most part, but "Learning To Live" is an exception.

I don't know about this, mike is very open to admitting that he REALLY loves tightening the heads of his snares way up there, i have a 14 X 6 inch snare and have it cranked into that range much like ACOS, theres alot of crack in it and its got the same ring when i hit it, I've only played on a piccolo once and can imagine that if it was cranked like mike likes it, it would probably choke. also i think from an interview i read he said that the reason he recorded the snare like that on ACOS was because David Prater talked him into using that triggered snare sound on images and words and that that is what he really wanted the snare on IaW to sound like. But it is very possible to get that sound out of a bigger drum, possibly more likely than a piccolo.

Hi all, requesting your responses (you can keep whatever flames you may be inclined to send).
I have been reading a lot recommendations from various people on the list for Savatage (hence the header) and did some looking on the web. They are listed under Death Metal at Yahoo. Is this right? I try not to pigeonhole music into categories, nor do I avoid stuff just because of a category, but Death Metal is one that I am not really interested in delving into (although, I do own Testament's The Ritual; they, too, are listed under Death Metal, but they didn't strike me as being anything like GWAR and others). Could I get some more in-depth opinions on Savatage from you guys (or girls, as the case may be); not just 'THEY RULE' or 'If you like DT, you will LOVE these guys.' As I said, I looked on the web and even found what looks like an excellent page - http://www.winternet.com/~savaweb/savatage.html (actually, I think I saw a post to group by Savaweb; am I right?) and looked through some of the lyrics and none of them seemed particularly...I don't want to say Satanic, because I know that that is not necessarily what Death Metal is about; they didn't seem to me to be anything that I might not hear on a Queensryche or DT or FW album. One other thing; what about the vocals? I hate it when the singer just growls the whole time; can they really sing? Thanks to all.

Sorry if that last header was misleading (Savatage - minimal DT content). I had meant to put in _something_ about DT and did not. Sorry. On to the DT stuff.
I have been a fan since '93 or so. A friend hooked me on FW in '92 and then told me I should buy I&W about a year later. I did, without listening to it and am very glad I did. I now have all of the official releases, including the Lie and Silent Man singles (are there any other singles that I don't know about?). I am not really into bootlegs, but might be interested in getting the entire Uncovered gig, if I could find it at a decent price (boots are just too darned expensive and money is tight these days) and that is just as good in the sound department as ACOS.
Anyhow, that is pretty much it. Sorry if I am wasting bandwidth, but I thought I would give a little background, instead of just being the mystery guy who posts occasionally. And if you ever see this sig -
