-What label is that QUEEN tribute album on? I am going to order
it from a local store that can get any cd in within a couple of
days for free. I hope it still isn't an import.

-Any word on that classical album from Windham Hill with Petrucci
             and Morse?

-I picked up HELLOWEEN's 'High Live' used for ten bucks. I was a
little dissapointed, but oh well. The 'Live in the UK' album
             is better.
            -New QUEENSRYCHE in March?!! Yes.

Ok, Ray Gillen, ex-Badlands, ex-Sabbath (for about a minute), collaborations
with George Lynch, etc. died from what I understand to be immune system
complications, which is a nice euphemism for something else, with which we
    are all familar....

I am just sitting here listening to the new Nevermore again. Whew.

    This stuff *crushes*

    H'llo,

I haven't even thought of Badlands in about forever, but I had heard/read
somewhere that he died of AIDS-related causes. I believe it was in 1992
    but I'm not sure.

If its the same person (he had pretty long blond hair, TALL (damn

There are a few places in the NY/NJ areas....Roseland usually has some good stuff, as well as Wetlands, Rock n'n' Roll Cafe (the place with the Prog Night), Mothers in Jersey (sometimes), Birch Hill (sometimes), and for cool bands on the Indie scene, there's always Maxwell's in Hoboken....

The best thing to do is to pick up a copy of the Aquarian (formerly the East Coast Rocker) - they always have a huge list of places and events listings.....

I get the same sorts of dreams, except that I'm singing and K. James comes along and rips the mike out of my hand to do it himself.

I chalk it up as hero worship, that I aspire to be great but still need much more practise before I get there. The rude or evil feelings you get are probably just your way of expressing some feelings of insecurity about your talent. Just keep working on it. When I've had a particularly productive rehearsal, I'm "allowed" to sing duets with people in my dreams. Not always KJLB, sometimes Pat Benatar or Annie Lennox.

    Hope this helps.

There is a band called Concrete Blonde who is not together anymore, but they have a few albums which are probably still in print. However, Janette Napoleono (pardon the gross misspelling) has such a low voice I don't know if she counts.

They do sort of dark music, death & vampyres I believe.

I dunno about else where in the world, but in these parts a copy of the official release of Garage Days (any format) is rarer then a DT Australian tour. I have seen it in an auction catalogue, where the minimum bid was $250. I have the origonal Garage Days revisited, it is on vinyl, a 12" picture disc with 3 tracks, 'Creeping Death/Am I Evil ?/Blitzkreig. I have been told by someone in the know that I can get $80 for it at the moment, but I should hang on to it for a while yet.

At the request of Bruce, I thought I would post this funny little (unfortunately true) story to liven things up a bit. In return, I expect to see some other audition nightmare stories.

I'd picked up a copy of _The Gazette_, which is a little metro-area rag focusing on the arts and other issues. Reading the "musicians wanted" ads are always amusing. So, there I was, I think having a sandwich somewhere looking artsy whilst reading the Gazette. I noticed an ad for a singer. I called the number and talked to the fella for a while. Turned out that they were going to boot out their current (male) singer because he had a problem showing up drunk to gigs, deciding at the last minute that the money wasn't good enough, and even occasionally catching the eye of some hot chick and just walking off the stage to go seduce her, leaving the other "musicians" to continue without him.

I can't remember the guy's name, so I'll call him Bob. Bob (36) was the bass player, he knew more than three chords. The lead guitarist (38) we'll call Greg. I talked to Bob on the phone three or four times, trying to arrange a time to audition. We discussed a set list, and I recognized a lot of the stuff as good-ol-boy types of songs (the kind about fast women which wouldn't be appropriate for a femme to sing). We decided that I would sing "What's UP?" by 4 Non Blondes, since that's the only thing I knew all the words to.

Bob gave me the address of Greg's place (which is where they hold rehearsals), somewhere in Yukon. I looked it up on mapquest.com, which printed me out a map of the streets (dirt roads). I did this because the string of instructions was much like this: ok. go down that highway that comes off of 39th expressway, going east, and then when you get to the exit with no sign take that one. Head north, and when you get to the Love's Country store go left. There'll be a fire hydrant there, so you'll know when you get there. Then after the third red light you go down the side street, no I don't know the name of it, you'll see it, and foller that around until you see my silver nissan pickup at the side of the road. No problem.

Well, fellow jammers, let me tell you something about Oklahoma. The cities are just like cities elsewhere, the people are busy and they stay away from farm animals when feeling affectionate. However, there exists a time warp somewhere along the infamous Route 66 where Cro-Magnon man still lives. They know of fire, dawgs and trucks, family values and hard work, and speakers that go to eleven. The audition site was smack in the middle of Rednecktown. I did not know this at the time.

My car decided to overheat as I drove along Route 66. I walked along the road looking for a place to phone. I'm not a supermodel, but I look okay, I thought surely someone would at least slow down for a redhead. After three or four miles I finally found a phone at a place that repaired marine motors. They graciously allowed me to use it, but eyed me suspiciously.

I called my husband, my dad, and the band, in that order. The band dudes said they'd come get me, no problem, but what was I doing on Route 66? I told them I had got a map from the internet. Pregnant pause on their end. They showed up in a dirty pickup filled with rednecks. They hooked up my car to their truck. I showed them my map, and Greg said that he'd never go on the internet because he might have sex and not know it. The ratio of shirts to bare scrawny chests was about 1:2.

So... by this time I was very late, and very embarrassed, and not a little nervous. We drove up to their house. In the yard were several disabled cars (I am not making this up), a flatbed trailer, lots of weeds, and a beautiful Rottweiler. The dog was very friendly. Greg seemed offended that she didn't try to tear off my head.

In the back was another two-story structure; upstairs (be careful of those stairs!) held a pool table and the equipment was arranged around it. The guys had huge Peavey amps cranked up all the way. I had a miniscule monitor across the room, they couldn't turn it up past three or they'd get feedback. I quickly got the idea that these guys were just into loud noxious music. I suppose I should mention the name of their band: The Feel Good Band.

I suggested that they play some stuff. I noticed it sounded weird, and they said they tune 1/2 step off (for some reason or other). Hm, ok, I guess when it's time to sing I'll be used to it and just pitch on them, I thought. After 10 minutes or so it was time.

I couldn't hear myself over their amps. I asked if they could turn it down a little. They said just shout, it'll be okay. I couldn't shout loud enough to hear (my mike was picking up their guitars, ja?). Usually I can sing over a choir with NO mike, be heard at the back of a church, no problem, but couldn't outdo them. If you shout too loud, you lose pitch, which is okay for a ball game but sucks when you're singing. So I started to get a little angry. We started again, and this time I was so mad (on top of the usual nervousness one gets at an audition, plus the car thing) I forgot the words! Ack! I never forget the words! I suggested that they let me stick in a CD I brought (Awake) and why don't I sing along without them playing so they could hear what I sounded like? One of the extra hang-alongs stuck it in, and I put it on LSOAD, which is a good song to test on (lows & highs, sustains, etc). Greg said, Hey we can't play that, what kind of stuff it that? We don't have a keyboard. I said hang on, just let me sing, I don't expect you to be this band, they went to school to learn how to do this, they get endorsements from Mesa Boogie. (Greg riled at that.)

I think it was less than 30 seconds when Greg started noodling around on his guitar, trying to work out a new Doors song. (They had a Johnny Cash songbook and most of the songs were for someone who can sing lower than I -- in other words, a bass.) It was at this point that I gave up entirely. I had maintained a diplomatic attitude, so they couldn't know how angry I was nor how funny I was finding this. Spinal Tap in deep Oklahoma.

I listened to them finish their rehearsal as my dad fixed my disabled car. After they were done, I asked how they were live, where the monitors were on stage and such. Did their singer have trouble hearing himself? In a patient explaning tone of voice, Bob said they set the mikes the same way all the time, and if you want to sing louder you just move the mike closer, and if you want to sing softer you move it farther away, but you didn't change the volume at which you were singing because if you do, the soundboard guy wouldn't know what to do. If you watch TV you'll see that's how the musicians on TV do it, he said. He really thought that's how you do it.

Mentally I gave myself a slap on the forehead. Guess my voice coach got it wrong.

    Hey Wayne and everyone else!

I can assure you that Savatage is NOT death metal and neither are their earlier works thrash metal as another guy said (IMO).... The play power metal of the best kind with some symphonic tendencies.

They're one of my all time favourite bands actually. I have all their

albums and it's a bit difficult to recommend you one to start with.

They're all good, except Fight for the rock.

Now one thing you should know is that they changed singer in 1993. Jon

Oliva was the original singer (he sings on the first 7 albums). The new

singer is Zachary Stevens... I personally like Jon's voice better. It's

kinda gritty and sometimes evil sounding... But very powerful and it

really suits their music. His voice is very emotional as well. I just

love it... I was very disappointed when he stoppped singing... But

Zachary is a great singer as well... Much more melodic sounding.

I can give you the following recommendations: If you want a very powerful album buy: Hall of the mountaing king - A really great album with some amazing guitarwork by Cris Oliva. True power metal all the way throgh.

If you want a very emotional album buy : Streets, a rock opera. This is

my favourite Savatage album. A concept album about a burnt-out rock

star... It's got both the power and the silent moments which are just so

    beautiful.

Another option is: Dead winter dead. A concept album about the war in

Bosnia. It's very powerful and mixes both classical music and power

metal in some songs. This my favourite album with Zachary as a singer.

If you want a bit of everything the buy the new: From the gutter to the

stage, best of Savatage. It's a compilation containing 15 songs from

nearly all their albums. It'll give you a good idea of the band and you

    can hear both singers...

Well i hope you can use my info.

Write me if you'd like to know more.

Ray Gillen died awhile ago of stomach problems related to AIDs. At least that is what I heard. This was a shame. Since he wasn't an alternative loser the press couldn't care less. We may never know the actual cause of his death.

Badlands cds are hard to find these days and may be out of print. Either that or the record company is planning to release something to make money like a greatest hits or something.

Badlands was a great band. I have a boot cd called "One Night In Boston" from around 1990. Basically the first cd plus a Hendrix cover. They sound great.

Sounds cool! I haven't heard of it, but I AM aware of a lot of the original tunes. Of all the covers Metallica has done, I'd say I like the Budgie tunes the best, at least in their original versions. I'd certainly recommend "Budgie" to anyone -- "Nude Disintegrating Parachutist Woman" is worth the price of admission by itself.

I believe Ray died of stomach cancer. There were the obligatory rumors of AIDS. Further, there is one song on Greg Chaisson's (bass player for Badlands) solo album that is sung by Ray. The rest of the album is terrible (too Christian for my tastes) so don't get your hopes up too much. And Jake has released a solo album that's apparently available only in Japan but can be ordered through cdnow for $45 (!).

Omar, On the Japan PPV video, John Myung plays a clean tone electric guitar that is set up on a stand for the chorus parts, and he plays the bass on all the other parts. You might've mistaken that clean tone electric for an acoustic guitar.
