Okay, I'm not going to bitch about someone posting his form for a research
project to the jam. It was long and all, but hey, sometimes there's only
so many ways to round up the necessary information for this type of thing.
But it is a violation of the Ytsejam terms. And the reason? Posts like
this from Mr Chesser (PLEASE don't take that as a flame) will take up FAR
too much space on the jam, and the majority of the members of this list
get nothing out of it. Post your poll guidelines, sure... post your
results, definately. But DON'T respond publicly to reseach requests or

I personally have to say that sometimes I LIKE a foreign accent. Gregoor from Lemur Voice is harder to understand because of his annunciation but I think the quality of the voice is what's important. The words can be clear and well written but if the voice is off key or has a poor tone, it's going to be less than enjoyable (to me). I'm using Gregoor's voice as an example because I think his accent sort of acts like a fingerprint. There are a lot of vocalists that sound very similar to other people... this guy (while reminding me of Sting and John Arch from the first listen on) sounds unique, much in the way that Geoff or JL do. Don't worry about an accent... concentrate on tone and pitch. If you include a lyric sheet with your cd or tape, everything will pan out fine. :)

A good amount of the keyboard parts are in the guitar books for I&W & Awake. Check it out. It even has most keyboard solos and all the parts for The piano-based songs.

I can think of only one "artist" whose intentions have always been to do just that: TAFKAP. Oh sorry, maybe I should drop the acronyms since no one really calls him that. He has named himself a symbol that somehow defies pronunciation, choosing to cumbersomely refer to himself as "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince." After finally breaking away from Warner, he cut loose in the studio and released a three-disc set called "Emancipation," which I really want to hear. He just couldn't comfortably channel his creativity under a bigtime label that refused to release albums at the furious pace he was itching to churn them out at. If ever a year went by without a release from Prince/TAFKAP, it was most likely due to the reins of his label.

It's a showcase of Mike Portnoy's lounge-piano acts from his pre-DT years. He does two Sinatra favorites (including "Love & Marriage," the theme from "Married...With Children"), and "Fly Me To The Moon," a Tony Bennet classic. All this plus two Christmas carols - "We Three Kings" and "Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem." It's even got photos of Mike at the piano in a big red Santa Claus costume.
Remember that guy who screamed really loudly right before "Bombay Vindaloo?" He's on this disc, too.

I heard the disc over the break at a friend's house in Maryland, but haven't received my copy yet. The disc opens and closes with DT (minus LaBrie) messing around in the studio. Those parts could be called The Sherinian & Portnoy Show, with special guests John Petrucci and John Myung. :) Featured performances from the Ronnie Scott's gig are U2's "Red Hill Mining Town," Rush's "Tears," and Metallica's "Damage Inc." with Barney of Napalm Death on vocals.

The real gem of this production is the sweet coughcoughGODcoughAWFULcough rendition of "Silent Night" done by the boys in the studio. Barbershop quartet at its finest. A Christmas carol for the Grinch in all of us. I tell ya, it's one thing to be able to sing scales in perfect intervals or harmonize at will with other instruments in minor or major keys... Some musicians spend their whole lives reaching for such goals, and some never make it at all...
But musicians who can actually sing quarter-tones, turn otherwise beautiful melodies into grating chromatic arrangements, and maintain challenging yet grotesque parallel fourths... Now THAT is a repertoire only Satan himself could top. I became jealous just listening to the skill displayed by the band as they (somewhat like the misunderstood scientist Dr. Frankenstein) twisted a helpless, innocent, peaceful thing into a tortured, ominous death-chant.
Years from now, as my coffin is lowered into the ground, it will not be a lone trumpet off in the distance that bids me a solemn farewell, but "Silent Night" by Dream Theater.
Whew... Good thing the band never sees this stuff...

I'll toss in another recommendation for Our Lady Peace. I've had "Naveed" in my CD changer for several months now (slot number somewhere in the 80s, I think) and I listen to it every week or two weeks. As someone said, it's one of the few 'mallternative' CDs that gets you airdrumming. Really, I'm not sure the mallternative label sticks too well on OLP; they're more straightahead rock than alternacrap.
Superior's singer is Michael Tangermann. He is easily the best prog vocalist I've heard in recent years (KJLB excepted, but I didn't discover him within recent years :)). Accent? Almost negligible. Range? Excellent. Does he 'strain' a lot on the CD, like so many other prog vocalists seem to do (alas)? Not as far as I can tell. I've heard he strains a bit in a live setting but sheesh, so has James at some shows. :) Superior's vocals (and their great songwriting; Chris Merlo was dead-on about Altura being too wacky sometimes, while Superior's songs flow extremely well) set them apart from damn near any other new prog band out there.
I need to call Dream Disc and see what their policies and procedures are. My copy of the demo CD is starting to get a little haggard; I'll retire it with honors. :)

His friend there admits to him that they absolutely hate putting shitheads like PUSA or Bush on the cover, but they can't resist because they sell so many magazines. One more thing...just a few years ago Guitar World did an issue with the 100 most important people in guitar. This list was a little different because it included dead guitarists and Beavis & Butthead. Anyways, if it means anything to you JP was included in this list, as was Mustaine and Friedman. Alex Lifeson however, was not included. Geddy Lee was :)

Ahh, well, you win some, you lose some. I think Altura has alot of potential to be the "Next big thing" in prog. They just need to work on their method a bit. I thought they would've sounded too much like Fates Warning hadn't they done the balls it up with little chunks thing. I still think One Dimension and Alone are my two most favorite prog songs for now. This band plays with emotion, something that's hard to find in bands nowdays. Greetings all! This morning while I was waking up, the local radio station played the original version of Closer To The Heart. I can't remember the last time I'd heard that one. I've been listening to the Tribute disc for about two weeks now, and I have to say that the FW version of this classic is so much better than the original to my ears. Ray Alder's singing and Mark Zonder's drum interpretation of the song put this one above the original to me. Hope I haven't offended any die hard Rush fans; I'd never set out to do that because I do respect Rush a lot. I wouldn't consider myself a big fan; never owned a disc by them (except for a tape copy of Moving Pictures), but I did see them on the T4E tour, which turned out to be a very good show. I guess you might say I am a casual listener to Rush; I am familiar with and like most of the songs that received any airplay. Next topic, foreign singers:

I know I disagree with a lot of my friends on this one, but I enjoy listening to european singers. I think the little differences in pronounciation are interesting, and do not detract from the music at all. I really like the singing on Black Jester's Welcome To The Moonlight Circus, and also both Ivanhoe discs I have. Veni Domine's singing is also quite good. And since I mentioned Veni Domine, I have to include Candlemass' Messiah Marcolin, one of the best! Which leads me to another topic:
Anybody here checked out the European band Zoic? They are comprised of members from Candlemass and the singer from Veni Domine! I've only heard a little bit of it while I was visiting my brother, but it sounded great. Candlemass and Veni Domine fans should check it out alike.
Lastly, any jammers know what happened to the band Imperium? I've haven't heard anything about them, and was wondering if they had another release besides "Too Short A Season," or did they break up? Any info would be great.
