Um , can I add a big NOT here? The best thing I've found in learning
the keyboard parts fromt he tab books is that they give you the chord
at the top. During some of the bridges and stuff like on Another Day
where the keyboard mimics the guitar it's helpful, but it's nothing
I'd spend the money on to learn the key parts. The only solos I've
found that are transcribed are the ones where John and Kev where
soloing together. (The only one offa the top of my head right now is
Take the Time). Anyway, you can learn Space Dyed Vest and Wait For
Sleep very roughly and there are a slight and varied few keyboard
parts in there arranged for guitar, but unless you know what you're
doing, you're just gonna get real frustrated this way (as I have
often enough). Heheh, I have learned alot since I bought these two
theory books, though. I actuall know how to form a dominant seventh
chord =D Funny thing is, I've been playing them all this time and never
realized it. Nice sounding thing's they are...
Anyway, don't want to see you blow $50 if you're not gonna use it
(Even though the books are very collectable. :)

Sorry, dude, all our ears aren't in our fingers. Just because people
can't play like Vai (Not you Bafu) or Jonny P. doesn't mean they
can't write enjoyable music. Heheh... As much as a hate to admit
it, I regret throwing away my old Nirvana tapes. I've realized that
all of us griping about these "telentless" bands is no better then
the spawn of these phallic cannibals griping that our "talented"
bands are just showing off and crap. It's all bull. Music's music,
whatever it is. If you like it, praise it, If you don't like it,
discuss it. If you think you can compare apples to oranges and
eliminate all the laws of nature so you can try to prove a pathetic
point, just shut the hell up, you can't do it, and nobody cares.
Adams and Nirvana have nothing in common except they write (or wrote)
music that some people have/had/will enjoy listening to for years to
come. If you don't like it, you'll have to deal with it. You're
feeble voice is enough to blow down the straw hut, let alone the
brick house. Not even by the hairs on you're chinny chin chin...
I'm rambling. :) Where'd I put that Creedence Clearwater CD?
Hopefully my last post, I gotta gripe about something...

I believe I may have been misread or misunderstood. I know for a fact that I never said I dislike simple guitar. Frankly, I enjoy simple guitar work sometimes. I did try to make a point that I see no reason for having transcriptions of this stuff in the guitar magazines. *ANYONE* that needs tablature to figure out how to play "Smells Like Teen Spirit" does not deserve to own a guitar. I consider myself a fairly talented bassist, and a not-half-bad beginning guitarist. Hand me a guitar, set up the distortion and whatever else you wackos use for me, and I can play the whole song from memory. That does not mean it's bad. But it definitely falls in the feel portion of the "feel---technique" spectrum. I can understand having a Petrucci solo tabbed out. But Nirvana? Come on.
I also said that I don't like Nirvana's music. I don't. Not because it's simple, it just doesn't appeal to me. I can't relate to a millionaire bitching about life. Presidents of the USA I like. It's happy. Silly at times. One might say whimsical. It's kinda the same reason I got into Anthrax before Metallica. They seemed to be having more fun.
Simple guitar can sometimes be used very effectively. Take the later Rush material. Alex doesn't wail or shred often. He chooses his chords carefully and plays sparsely, to effect the mood he desires.

I hope you're right. Just one more comment on this. A simple song does not imply that the performers lack talent. My example - "Surrounded."

I concur. She's one of my favorite vocalists, and NOT because of the way she wiggles on the Piano bench (although she does it well), but because I think she has a great voice.

Funny you should bring this up. I was at a CD store today and got a used copy of YKTR of only 8.99! It's called Y Kant Tori Read and other rarities. It was released in 1994 by a label called Pacific Recording Company. I can't be 100% sure it's NOT a bootleg. But from the way the music sounds I would say it is legit. If anyone has a definite answer please let me know.
There's been a lot of talk about TNT lately. If anyone is interested in dubs of their stuff I had a friend drop off SEVEN TNT cd's tonight, going all the way back to their first EP which has a bunch of non-english songs to the new compilation. I also got a live video from Japan in 1989; it's a factory Japanese video in HiFi stereo and is :50 long. If anyone is interested in dubs of any of these let me know QUICK because I'll only have these here for a few days then my friend's taking them back, the RAT BASTARD! (just kidding about the Rat bastard thing).

Well, there really is a big difference between Nirvana and Bryan Adams. His music is a lot more melodic, and the guitar work is a LOT better than Nirvana. His lead guitarist is actually very good. Like an example, his song "Have You Ever Loved A Woman" (I think that's the name.. ) has that Spanish guitar solo in it that is quite impressive! I'm sorry, but Kurt Cobain could NEVER have done something like that.
Sure, there are guitarists out there a lot better than Bryan Adams, etc. (like John Petrucci, Jason Becker, etc.), and he'll never be better than them, but you really can't compare him with Kurt Cobain. I mean his stuff really was just the same chords over and over. If you heard one song, you heard them all. So, I really don't think Chris's post was contradictive in any way. If you don't like Bryan Adams and stuff, that's ok. :) But there is a huge difference between him and Nirvana.
However, I have to agree that it will be great when we can turn on the radio and hear bands like Dream Theater, etc. instead of the mostly no talent stuff out there today. I remember when Z-Rock came out here in Detroit, back in 91.. that's where I heard DT for the first time. They were cool then. Now all they really play is stuff like Smashing Pumpkins even Green Day! On occasion I'll hear Nugent or something good like that, but the majority is a bunch of crap! And I really hope that it will go back to the way it was, when it was worth listening to.

Last year was released here the Brazilian version of "Guitar Player", and, till now, they're still giving more atention to really good guitarists. Yeah, some of the articles are just translated from the american edition, but, I think, that when something crappy is out there they're putting articles about brazilian players (pretty good stuff, indeed). And the best: they don't give any transcriptions of "About a Girl" on the "Nirvana MTV Unplugged", hehehe Not to say about the lessons, almost everything written by brazilian guys. It was funny to see Angra's Kiko Loureiro teaching A pentatonics, but that's ok. (that was one of the first things I learned at the guitar school). Talking bout Guitar World, I think it was 95 when I saw a listing of the "100 guitarist that more contributed to the Guitar World in the last 20 years" or something like that. It was kinda revolting to see Sonic Youth's players getting the 8th position, while Satch got 14th. I can't say nuthing bout Petrucci, cause at that time I didn't even know what DT stood for. :) But, at least, Eddie Van Halen was the 1st, with Vai in the 2nd and Hendrix in the 3rd (not sure about Vai's and Hendrix's place, maybe it was vice-versa). BTW, I have a 1990 Guitar Player (with The Smith's Johnny Marr on the cover) that has a pretty interesting DT article, with a "interview" with Petrucci and Myung. Lotsa good stuff there. I'll think about putting it in my page (in English, I just gave up translating everything just to put it there :) ).

I just got back from Angra's first Japan tour:Day 2. They're OWESOME. Here's my live report of this show.
IMP Hall (the venue) was filled with metal kids.(Sold Out show---I think 1,400+ kids were there.) Angra's fans are mainly the same with the fans of Helloween,Gamma Ray,Blind Guardian,etc...so called German Metal--in Japan,or maybe I should use the words Prog-Metal on this list. Anyway,the show started.... "Crossing" was aired with tape...And bands came to the stage,and played "Nothing To Say". High-Quality Sound! The bands were very tight. You know,every each person of this band are talented. The song "Z.I.T.O." followed "Nothing To Say". Very high speed melodic speed metal song,I like this! Then,"Streets Of Tomorrow" was the first song from their first album aired today. Fans were not ready for this song,so the response from fans became a bit small.Mmmm..... The middle section of this show was tribal part from 'Holy Land' album. The middle part of 'Holy Land' album was dull to me on CD,but it was intense on LIVE. "Holy Land","The Shaman" and "Carolina The 4th" was really great part of this set. After that they played songs like, "Time","Silence And Distance" "Evil Warning". Everybody got crazy on "Evil Warning"--the first single in Japan. --Encore--- Andre's vocal was very nice on "Reaching Horizon" (Acoustic version). He's really great guy. His vocal was a bit faked sometimes,but mainly he's nice. The 2nd encore part was finished with "Queen Of The Night" (You know this was a bonus track for Japanese version,so I didn't expect to hear this song.). But they forgot something!!!!!!! The most important song for ANGRA! Yes!!! The 3rd Encore started with "Unfinished Alleglo" on tape. We waited this song--the song made Angra gold prize band---it's "Carry On"! Every kids on floor sang every part of this song from verse to chorus. Owesome. Diffinetely the high-light of this show was this song. The last song aired today was "Painkiller". It seems they'll tour South America and Europe this year. So if you missed their show,you better see them live on their next tour.

Well, well... Ray Gillen was a recent topic on the Black Sabbath Mailing List and nowadays here. It really looks like he died of AIDS. I have a copy of the Sun Red Sun΄s only CD. Only 4 of the 8 songs of that CD was sung by him. Sun Red Sun style remembers the beggining of Anthrax :)

Mark Boals sang some songs on the last Yngwie Malmsteen΄s CD (Inspiration) An excellent album for Dream Theater΄s fans... I think Malmsteen has the same musical taste than Petrucci. Malmsteen plays " In The Dead Of Night", " Gates Of Babylon", "Carry On Wayward Son" and others...
