Regarding Chris Ptacek's post in digest 2178..

    >>I have to say i don't believe that was him on the solo.

Well, I know it wasn't Bryan Adams himself, he really only plays the rhythm
guitar, but I was saying it was his guitarist. He does have a separate lead
guitarist in the band. If he actually had a guest guitarist playing it for
the video and the cd itself, I don't know. Never really thought of that.
But either way, his guitarist is quite good.

You were saying about Michael Jackson and stuff not playing his solos... I
believe Jennifer Batten was the guitarist for him for quite a long time.

    Take care :)

Yeah, that's where I have seen it before (other than the used copy
for about $5 I should've gotten from a used store a few years back).
I might check and see if they can order it. I did check out VD's web
site a while back. Good fir info on the band, from what I remember.
Also, I know Rad Rockers carries it (forgot the URL), but if I
remember correctly, I think it was at import prices (a tad mroe than
I want to pay at them moment).

I have heard a lot about the band, Galactic Cowboys. I have never heard
them, and I am wondering where to start as far as purchasing CDs. Which
one would be best for a die hard DT/FW fan (myself) to listen to first?

Thanks to people on the Jam, I have really gotten into Fates Warning
(Parallels and Inside Out just blew me away). I am hoping you guys and
gals can come through for me once again.

    Thanks in advance.

Z-rock rules!!! I was listening to them in Portland, Orygun way back in 89
until they went off the air in 92. That about ruined my day. That was
were I first heard Pull me under; and since then, I've bought every album
on release date. I intend to buy the new one the very hour it's released.

Thanks to all the comments about Madame X... I had no idea Sebastian Bach
was in that. I really remembered it as an all female band, but then again,
maybe it was just a local act. All I know for sure is that the drummer was
Roxy Petrucci who later made it in Vixen. That's cool to know about Seb
    though, thanks :)

And yeah, technically Z-Rock is off the air here too... it was on 102.7
here, and that station still plays rock but it is called The Bear now. But
I guess I still confuse it with Z-Rock cause they played about the same
stuff near the end. And, I think it's the same DJs as on Detroit's Z-Rock.
It's too bad though... Z-Rock was cool as hell! At least for a while...
hell, that's the ONLY station on which I'd ever heard PMU, UaGM, and Lie!

Noticed Ytse-Ed ask what Savatage cd to get next... my suggestion, get Edge
Of Thorns. Personally, that's one of my favorites (Streets being my fav).
I still prefer Zak to Jon, but yes, I do see what everyone means about Jon
being a more emotional singer. I also have Gutter Ballet (I don't have the
stuff before that) but I'm not too into that one. So, personally, I'd
recommend EOT next. Then, Gutter Ballet I suppose. And as for the stuff
before, I can't comment cause I don't have it. Check out the Savatage page
at http://www.winternet.com/~savaweb/savatage.html. There are sound samples
there from most of the albums..

Well, I'm sorry to hear that Ben's leaving the jam :( I'm really going to
miss his posts and stuff... I enjoyed reading them. Well, hope he's still
    on IRC on occasion..

Well, this is my 3rd post in a few days, I guess I'll have to go back into
hiding soon :) Take care, all :)

I think I'm gonna get flamed here, but I gotta say what I feel. I saw Yngwie a few months ago and I have to say I was very disappointed. I've admired his playing since I bought the LP Steeler back in 1983 (Hot On Your Heels kicks ass!) Sure he plays really fast, but having a chance to watch him close he barely is touching the strings; he's just got his amp up so high that any hyper-active person could've sounded like a virtuoso. --------------------------------

You're a nice guy Ben and I wish you'd stay around, but if you're gonna go then go. Or maybe we're supposed to feel guilty because we're not providing you with enough entertainment.

    Hi 'jammers!

Some remarkable results of the "best of 96" poll of a weekly metal radio show here in France:

Best band: Angra Best album: Angra - Holy Land Hope for the future: Superior !!!

Apparently some people in France have a good taste in music! So I've chosen the right place to study. :)

Last week I've been to a very special concert: The German metal band Rage played their complete album "Lingua Mortis" live together with a classical orchestra. Imagine the band with 30 classical musicians on stage in front of 2000 screaming metal fans! It was great! So anybody interested in an interesting mix of metal and classic, check out the album "Lingua Mortis" by Rage & The Symphonic Orchestra Prague !

    Yup, you're probably right...

Here in the UK, the "nations main pop/rock radio station" BBC Radio One has held a couple of "favourite songs of ALL TIME" polls, I think five years apart. Bearing in mind that this is a "fave songs of ALL TIME" poll you'd expect more that just about 5 songs of the 100 to match between the polls, wouldn't you? I don't know which ones they were, but I really don't give a shit if a poll such as this can change 95% of its content within five years... very sad...

Even when you try to exclude the influence of fashion, it will always cast its shadow...

OK, so the bidding goes on... it started as throat cancer, now someone suspects it was AIDS. I believe that it was kept quiet at the time which would tend to suggest that there is some sort of stigma attached to whatever he died of. Does anyone know FOR SURE what brought down one of the greatest rock/blues singers?

I saw Badlands twice on their last UK tour, just when Ray had rejoined in an attempt to halt the flood of refunds on tickets for the tour. This must've been about 6 months before Ray's death. It sends a chill down my spine to think that he was so cool, sang so well & looked so well, but then he just seemed to have dropped dead of some "mystery illness"...

Wherever you are Ray, you sang your bollocks off to the UK despite your illness & troubles with Jake... I'll never forget those gigs... RIP...

Hey Ytse-Ed and everyone else who might be interested!

Glad you found the Streets disc. It's my favourite Savatage album as well. A true masterpiece. Your next buy has to be either "Gutter ballet" or "Hall of the mountain king". "Gutter ballet" has a good mix of both power and awesome ballads. "Hall of the mountain king" is true power all the way through and has some amazing guitarwork by Criss. They're both "must buys". After those you should buy "Sirens" or "The dungeons are calling". If you're lucky you can find them both together on a cd. Then buy "power of the night" (all these cd's has Jon Oliva on vocals by the way) Basically: If you find any of these cd's then buy them at once, you won't regret it. They're all great! A small warning: If you find "Fight for the rock" then listen to it before you buy it... or you will get a nasty surprise. It is the weakest Savatage album. It has a totally commercial and not at all powerful sound. But it's fun to listen to it sometimes... (especially my favourite song on that album "day after day")

They've also released a live cd. It has a great sound that captures all their power (...and then some). You can get it as a japanese import. The title is "Final Bell: A tribute to Christopher Michael Oliva" I think that it has been released in the US as well but under the title "Ghost in the ruins: A tribute to....." It contains songs right up till the streets album (unfortunately none from that album). Buy it and just listen to Jon's vocals...amazing... and Criss's guitarwork... a classic live release

Anyway if you want more info write me in private...

Lok, guys. It's just about as en vogue to dis Molnsteen for his shredding as it is to dis alternative musiic because it's trendy. I happen to enjoy Malnsteen when I'm in the mood for him. Granted he hasn't evolved at all like JP has since Awake. If you want a guitarist who shreds with little attention to melody, look at Kirk Hammett. Yes, he was my first idol and, yes he wrote the Fade to Black and Unforgiven solows, but is any other solow of his really melodically beautiful? OK, I forgot One. I think some things that Malnsteen writes are beautiful. I also think he did do a good job on Wayward Son. The pentatonic runs were very well-thought-out. Granted, when he shifted to his trade-mark phrtgian domenant it was a little too much to handle, but the rest, I thought, was good. Just had to defend the man who, though a son-of-a-bitch, got me wanting to know what sweep-picking was and got me into bach-and-roll and all of its off-shoots. Be well. Matt B

Since the X Band thing won't die, here's another one. While brousing through the usual crap selection of CD's at Wal-Mart the other night I ran across a band called "RedneX." The Cd title was "Sex and Violins." No I didn't buy it and doubt that I'll be sorry about that decision.

I agree that those weird parts screw up the groove of the songs and I wish they would just blow those parts away. But also, I do not agree that their songwriting is 'horrible'. Those parts are horrible, and I think they are just going out of their way to try to accentuate theit technical ability without looking at how it fits. That's not the way to approach it for sure. But aside from these parts, the rest of the music IMO is very well written and fun to listen to. 'Alternate Lines' for example has a killer groove and an awesome instrumental break in the middle. A little tweaking and they could be an amazing band.

A thought on TSO: is this just one of the best albums ever or what?

About Savatage: Who saw them in concert with Alex Skolnick also playing with his band 'Exhibit A'? They were the best opening act I have seen, and I heard they were trying to release an album some time. Anyone heard anything about them?

I Mother Earth: I saw them open for DT in Milwaukee a while ago, but IMO, they sounded really bad. Maybe it was just their live sound, but they sounded like average alternative stuff. They didn;t seem to get much of a reception from the DT crowd either. But a lot of you on here seem to dig their album, so maybe i should check out their studio sound - I might be missing out on something.

    Thanks for listening, Rob Campbell
