    Hello everyone,

My name is Charoenkwan, I'm doing a 2 minute 3D animation project (thesis
project) on SGI with Pink Floyd topic. It's an animation of Pink Floyd. I
would like to have some help from you guys, could you please answer the
questions and send it back to me, thank you very much.

    1. Do you know Pink Floyd?

    2. How did you come to know Pink Floyd?

    3. How would you discribe their music?

    4. Can you name the members of Pink Floyd?

    5. What is it about Pink Floyd that you like?

Yeah, Vince - I feel your pain. Not only was the top 100 list filled
with players that, well, shouldn't be there (IMO), but Nigel Tufnel made
the list. He's not even a real person! I love Spinal Tap as much as
anyone, but come on....And this "list" nearly took up the entire magazine so
there were almost no articles! I won't mention transcriptions because
their transcriptions fall into one of three categories: 1. Anyone with a
basic knowledge of 5 or 6 chords can approximate it without the sheet
music, 2. The transcription was printed in another guitar magazine a
few years ago, or 3. The name of the song is "Erotomania" :) (Category
3 songs don't appear very often)

I, too, noticed the lack of DTC in the 2/97 issue, but was also pleased
to see the inclusion of Frank Zappa (it's cool to like him now, isn't
it? Must be...) and Dickey Betts, and surprised to see John Fogerty and
Neil Young. BTW, the title was "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,"
which explains why players of lesser technical ability (read: who
couldn't play their way out of a paper bag) were included ahead of some
others (read: J.P.) who seemingly should have made the cut. I didn't
notice Shawn Lane's name in there, either.

But there was a huge picture of Daniel Johns on page 14. so it's all ok
    ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Yes, PF is one of my all-time favorite bands. David Gilmour is my favorite
    guitarist.

    >2. How did you come to know Pink Floyd?

I believe I was introduced to PF by listening to the local classic rock
    station in the mid-80's.

    >3. How would you discribe their music?

Hard to pinpoint, it is so many things. A lot of people start with
psychodelic, but I find it more soothing than anything else (Meddle, Wish
You Were Here and Animals, in particular). Gilmour's guitar playing is so
expressive; no one else even comes close to putting the same feeling that he
    can into his songs.

    >4. Can you name the members of Pink Floyd?

    David Gilmour - guitar
    Roger Waters - bass
    Richard Wright - ketboards
    Nick Mason - drums
and Syd Barrett - founding member and guitarist, only with the band for 2
    albums.

Ah, you forget. If Jethro Tull has released anything in the last five years, Metallica may be in trouble. :)

The Grammies are a load of shit. No one that votes for them knows anything about music. Examples:

One year, Metallica was up for a Grammy - I believe it was for the Black album. Everyone expected them to win. Jethro Tull won for some 5-year-old piece of garbage. JETHRO TULL! METAL?

The next year, I think, Anthrax was up for the metal award for Persistence Of Time. IMHO, the best album of their career. What beat them? Metallica's *single* of Stone Cold Crazy - a cover song!

And, who can forget Milli Vanilli getting Best New Artist?

The Grammies are shit, and I pay them no heed.

This, too, is upsetting. I share your pain.

Yup. GW, Guitar, and the rest of the lot used to stand for something. They used to feature talented guitarists who were changing rock guitar for the better. Now, I suppose, they cover what they cover because they feel it helps their sales. It's bullshit, just like the Grammies.

Popular culture, these days, seems to be in a mood to reward mediocrity, and insult talent. Fuck 'em. We know what's good, and we know what we like. Don't watch the Grammies, and don't buy the guitar mags unless they have something to offer. I have bought two guitar magazines in the last year. (I forget which titles.) They were the ones with Rush and EVH on the cover. I'll support the magazines that at least make an effort to reward talent. However, if I see another Nirvana or PUSA transcription listed on the cover, I might puke.

Not that I dislike those bands. (Well, I *do* dislike Nirvana, but that's not my point.) Anyone that needs tablature to learn how to play that stuff doesn't deserve to own a guitar. And anyone that wastes time transcribing that crap when they could be busy with the new VH material, or something equally challenging, should never get another transcription published again.

Boy, did I go off on a rant there. Sorry.

Yeah. I remember the name of the band and the name of the song. I can't think of how the song goes now (how fickle rock radio is), but I remember that I liked it.

    > As far as Bryan Adams and whether or not his career is still intact:

Who really cares what station he get airtime on? Extreme's "More Than Words" and Mr. Big's "To Be With You" were on every station in the world a few years ago. Does that make them bad songs? Nope. Popular != Bad. Bryan Adams has released some pansy-ass shit lately, but for my money he's still a great singer and songwriter. I saw him live about 4 years ago at the Brendan Byrne in NJ. It was him and his band in t-shirts and jeans, some combo amps, a drumset, a couple of keyboards, and a few white lights. The antithesis of your typical Metallica stage show. And it was one of the best concerts I've seen. He didn't need gadgets or gimmicks to make the music work. It spoke for itself. Besides, he's Canadian. We all know that the world's best musicians come from either the Great White North or Long Island. :)

    Yet I rant again.

    > know how they broadcast a couple of hours of their new M2 network > during the afternoon (and nighttime too, I think)? Over the holidays > I saw, on the M2 show, the video for Rush's Half the World. The VJ

That's incredible! I always miss the good stuff! While I was home, though, I did manage to catch that live video for VH's "Unchained." Ahh, when the M stood for Music...

    ----

OK, just a couple of other comments. First, I have fixed up some minor changes to the FAQ. If you get a chance, please look it over again, and see if everything appears kosher. Specifically, I fixed some links and some e-mail addresses, fixed that part where I confused "The Mirror" and "Voices" (duh! brain fart!), updated the Mike Bahr section, and a couple of other little things. If you get the chance, I'd love to know what you think.

And, finally, some thoughts about Altura. I don't like them at all. They annoy me. Here's why:

They are extremely talented musicians, but their songwriting is just horrible. They have some really great melodies, hooks, choruses, etc. But just as they develop a song into a really killer groove, they go and balls it up with these little chunks of notes with no apparent rhythm or melody. They totally detract from the song. Technically great, but so devoid of feeling. I'm probably going to wind up selling this disc at some point.

Man, I have to calm down.

Picked up the Lost In The Sky boot at Second Coming Records before break. Good CD. First bootleg I've ever owned, so I bought it with trepidation. I now have TLF on CD, finally. What are the names of the instrumentals on the CD, by the way... I know about Mission Impossible, and Eve, and Puppies On Acid. WHat is the one after TLF (different than the one on LiT.)? Any other instrumental info would be appreciated. Thanks Mike Burstin for telling me abotu Second COming... cool place. The only bad thing about the CD is the sound on the last part of Only A Matter of Time (OaMoT) and PMU. Otherwise a really, really good boot!

LOL, I went to Guitar Center and read through the list of the "100 Best Guitarists..."... Frankly, I find it insulting when there's so many guitarists better than me out there (that AREN'T listed), and yet (whether this is my enormous "Ptacek fool" ego speaking or not) I have to consider myself a better player than MANY of the guitarists listed. I wish they'd give in and start giving credit to the people that deserve it. Since when has Billy Corgan been an innovator? By 1990 there has already been well over 100 people that have had a greater impact on the music and more particularly the GUITAR PLAYING world, as that's the focus of the magazine. To not give at LEAST Petrucci a nomination in the Prog section is just amazing. In the 90's he's already redefined the genre, and I suspect that within the next generation he will far overshadow Alex Lifeson and the likes. That's just my prediction... he's a player that's still getting better and better, while I find Lifeson's playing to change very little.

I want to address this too. I merely made MENTION of the fan club once and I got a letter from Neil. And my subsequent questions were answered promptly. Don't dog the guy... he's definately there to help out with things of DTIFC nature.

An a side note, Neil, if you have a document you can send to the list with subscription information, I think it's been a while since we've last seen it. I'd like to get around to subscribing now that I have income. Many people have asked recently "how do I get on the list?". I think it's on topic and probably a good idea to post it if you're up to it.

Trust me. :) The Christmas CD alone should be evidence enough that if awesome exclusive stuff is ever gonna come out of Long Island Musician Central, it's gonna come to those who joined the IFC. I know the people in charge of it now, and it's getting properly handled from now on, has been for several months actually.

I have lived in vancouver, BC, for 3/4 of my life and Adams is a joke. He worked at a store here and supposedly was a total dickhead, needless to say he was "let go" hehe. He isn't anything special, he was cool before all this shit went on, like his new song, "All I want" well not THAT new but the guy talks about not wearing all these fancy clothes and yet, there he is in the video probably wearing some weird designer shit. Adams can go live in the States.

-The Tea Party - my favorite (next to rush) of the canadian -bands. These guys are good! Kind of a led zeppelin-ish -sound, except with a baritone singer. On their latest cd -"Edges to Twilight" (which is available in the states) the -band (a three man band) uses something like 35 instruments -over 12 tracks. They get into all this middle eastern stuff. -VERY GOOD!@ Tea Party is really good, it's more like the Doors meet Zepplin though. The sing sounds EXACTLY like Morrison, the resemblance is uncanny. -The Tragically Hip - I'm not too into them, but these guys -are the Pearl Jam of Canada (in terms of fanfare, not music). -Their music is pretty good, kind of mellow, laid-back. Their -singer goes on some crazy spoken words that are really -intense. Day for Night is pretty good, i don't really like -their new one. Anyone who is Canadian knows these guys and probably likes them, even rappers but I couldn't even compare them to Pearl Jam in fanfare. The Hip is also getting to be pretty big in the US too, still playing theatres though. I don't think a band like that or for that matter, very few other bands, will get to be playing the really big venues. I remember that Guitar World Top 100, that was a fucking joke. Ok, Let's name some guitarists who were left out, JP was, that was a joke, what about Dave Murray and Adrian Smith? Fuck, their the masters of twin harmonies, I'm not even sure KK Downing and Glen Tipton made it in. I THINK Zakk Wylde made it in, not to sure about that, If Rhoads was still alive, he'd be listed as number 1, which I tend to question why Cobain was even in there, same with Criss Olivia or Dan Spitz (ex-Anthrax). Those guitar magazines are all a joke now anyways, I really can't stand them anymore, they're interested in glorifying guitar players and that's it.

And I think > we really are not DTish. ... not a flame... just a note. :) Well, I've never said it was you who said.. :) Ok, I've heard it from a lot of people that's why I bought Behind. Even Metal Hammer wrote in the Hungarian issue that the last track (can't remember the title) is a song like Space Dye Vest (hey, I didn't find any similarity in any songs so don't flame me). Anyway they (MH) didn't like the album and wrote that it's German power metal (I remember it was progressive metal.. am I right?) :) So finally I didn't understand either why they compare Superior to DT when they believe it's power metal...??? Have you played DT covers ever on stage? Our band plays PMU, AD, UAGM, Metropolis, WFS, CiAW, A Mind Beside Itself, Scarred, ACOS and I think these are very faithful to the originals (well, our singer is not a JLB, but I think his voice is ok). The only problem is the foreign accent, IMHO. I would like to ask jammers from the States how they find the singer's accent from Lemur Voice or Superior? Is it disturbing or provoking a smile? I know they do a very good job but I think they can't have a pronunciation like a singer born in the right place... Maybe we should import a singer from Canada. ;)) Bye, Peter ------------------------------------------------------ | I have too much blood in my beer circulation. ;) | ------------------------------------------------------
