"Kings of Sleep" is the only Hamm CD I have :( (well, except for Vai's
P&W, but that doesn't really count). This disc gets regular rotation in
my CD player. Some of the songs are a bit lame songwriting-wise, but the
bass playing throughout is top-notch. And every time I listen to him
play Bach's "Prelude in C", I'm tempted to just give up playing bass
altogether. If you're a fan of any of Stu's work (and Working Man is not
a fair representation - he's much better than that), pick up anything you
can find by him. He has three or four solo CD's out, all on Relativity
from what I understand (back when they were good).

BTW, I saw a rap album in the store the other day released by
    Relativity. I cried.

[snip] I agree 100% with everything Rage had to say. I describe them as "Yes meets Type O". Arranging is awesome. Lots of great hooks and melodies - and female voice harmonies (yum) - are mixed just right with prog elements. And they use the coolest samples I've ever heard (yes, cooler than DT's :). On this one album, they use samples from Ren & Stimpy, Star Wars, Reservoir Dogs, and other things. It's cool as hell. When I got this disc, the only thing that could chase it out of the CD player and keep it out was Spock's Beard.

Alright, alright, how exactly did Kurt Cobain die? Did he overdose on drugs of some sort or did he shoot himself? Did Malmsteen call him one day and begin playing 32nd notes over the phone?

Has "Scenes From A Memory" begun shipping yet?

Well I heard an interesting song last night. It started with a riff played by Petrucci at that clinic last June. Turns out it's called "Stairway To Heaven," and now that I've heard it in it's entirety, I can now say I'm a changed man. Sort of. When Petrucci did that to give an example of what he heard "every day" while working in a guitar store, everyone burst into laughter, and I had to sort of sit there and assume it was from something famous that everyone hated. Or loved. But now it all makes sense.

The song that came on after that, next on the album I guess, started with a heavy drumbeat which I recognized as being sampled in about 49 different rap songs. Who'd have thought Led Zeppelin would one day influence the creation of dozens of rhymed threats. Then when the guitar came in I wondered what exactly Motley Crue was listening to when they thought up "Hooligan's Holiday." Those Zeppelin guys must be pretty popular...

Even more bizarro was when I was listening to a tape of Steve Morse's "Picture This," which happens to be the only piece of music I own by that icon and what is arguably one of the most beautiful pieces of music around. Anyway, when it ended I turned on the radio, and was blown away when I heard an extremely similar piece, I mean a Sonic Twin, on a jazz station (KPLU Tacoma-Seattle). A guitarist by the name of Martin Taylor was playing a piece from his album "Artistry." Anyone heard of this fellow? Is he another biggie that I've just never heard/heard of?

So I guess our outlook has gone from "but there may not be one" to "Superior!!!"

Anyone looking for a break from sweep-picking and finger-numbing scale practicing, check out the Stray Cats "Best Of The Stray Cats." My first Stray Cats album, and I'm impressed. Brian Setzer has some pretty cool trix up his sleeve. And best of all, it's FUN music. :)

The one thing missing from DT (j/k).

Maybe it's just me but could this girl be referring to what was popularly considered "heavy metal" in the 80s and early 90s? You know, all that glam stuff. Not that all glam is bad, though. I love Judas Priest, VH, Kiss, and the Scorpions. :)

the jam doesnt suck any less. people's opinions about it do. these threads are the same gooey threads that were going on a year ago, and you can either have fun with them, read them, respond to them, get involved with them, or you can sit back and say "this sucks" i think after two years you may just be getting tired of this place, but i really dont see how it sucks. i been here probably a year now and i still love reading and posting to jams just as much as i did when i first got on, theres 800 some people out there to hear your voice. being someone who talks to ben a lot, something i have noticed, and this is just a perception of mine, is that he's getting more involved socially at his school, he's just getting away from the net a lot, and thats probably what really resulted in him getting off the jam. thats not a bad thing at all, its just led him to want off tha jam. when you stop reading posts, you stop following with the people, the inside jokes, everything else, you start thinking it sucks. the jam still rules imo, nah nah :P

Hi everyone. I am finally back at school:( amidst jams o'plenty. It was great seeing everyone at BH and I need to voice my request for BH boots. I didn't read all of the jams from vacation so I am sure I missed something. If someone could let me know the info it would be muchly appreciated. I am sure there were plenty of spoilers so I won't go on but I do have two things I want to mention. First of all, great fucking show, as always. Secondly (is that a real word?), I didn't think the sound quality was nearly as good as last year. Especially since they had new material, it would have been a lot nicer had it been mixed better. I didn't hear much of Derek although I was dead in front of him, he has a nice smile:) Okay, two more things, sorry. On the subject of Derek, his girlfriend or her friend needed to keep their hands off of Mallet's ass. It is reserved. And the two biker type people pushing at the front of the stage area needed a body check, they were real jerks. It sounds like I have a lot of complaints but I actually had the time of my life that night. I am assuming so did a lot of you guys! Well, that is about it for now, if someone could let me know about the boots I will be a happy camper. Thanks!

    Hi everyone,

First I'd like to thank to person who posted about the Fates Warning news. Great, that's one of the main reasons why I'm on this list : latest news on my favourite bands.

Speaking of favourite bands : I bought a CD by a band called Darkstar. I guess most people don't know them, so I'd like to introduce them to you. Darkstar is a project (I believe, can anyone correct me on this ?) which features Dan Rock (former guitarist of Psychotic Waltz, never hear anything about them on this list, they rule !), Siggi Blasey on keys, Martin Iordanidis on bass and Oliver Werner. Apart from Dan Rock, I don't know any of the other 3 guys, can anyone tell me in which bands they play ?

Darkstar is instrumental (yes, instrumental), but their music is hard to describe, but I'll try. It's kind of ambient, mixed with metal. I guess you could call it Pink Floyd meets Metallica. If you like the unique style of Psychotic Waltz, you'll surely love this album.

    See ya,

    Aurora

Anyone else noticed that Shrapnel are releasing CDs, not just by guitar virtuoses, but also by progbands (Artension and Mayadome, etc.). Are Pete Morticelli and Mike Varney trying to spread thelosses or what? :)
