Hey group!!! After the crappy day I just had, I have
to share some good news. I found a used Echolyn
cd that I can sell. It is: As The World. It is an
excellent cd. The music kicks serious butt!!!
If you want it, e-mail ME at gsrockr@en.com.
I would like to get $7.00 for it.
About the BH pictures. They have been put on
a web site. You can see some of the jammers
that came from far and near to see DT at the
Birch Hill rock club at the following site:
    http://www.cais.com/jjens/bh/
If you are in the pictures, but not identified or
mis-identified, e-mail ME and tell me what picture
you are in and WHO you are. Back to the jam...

Maybe those in the know can clear this up. What was it that Buddy
Holly did to innovate guitar playing. I'm srious here. I don't care
for '50s rock at all so I haven't payed attention to it. I am a
novice guitar player, but Holly never came to mind as someone I should
         study. Help me here!

According to a media web page I saw, Zrock was discontinued nationwide at
the end of the year by ABC, who bought the network some time ago and
decided there was no longer a market for metal :( Some stations, such as
WHZT here in Champaign, switched formats a little early (to classic
rock). Personally, I think Zrock was at its peak about 4 years ago..
ever since then they've played so much mainstream music that it kind of
    lost its uniqueness.

    About Z-Rock,

First, it was where I first heard DT. I had actually read about this
cool new band called Dream Theater on the NMS, and their single being
PMU. Well, I recognized the title when I heard the song, and sure
enough, by the time it was over I knew I liked the band. Z-Rock went
on to play most of the songs on IAW as singles or on request shows..
    pretty cool.

About Z-Rock. I think there have been local versions, but the
nationwide version is/was based out of Dallas, TX.. that's where all
the DJs are. They apparently were able to open up new affiliates in
medium to large radio markets at low cost, and didn't mind losing them.
They started up one in College Station, TX in 1994 on a brand new
frequency for the area, then the station switched formats about a year
later. Z-Rock has been on AM, FM (mostly), and even shortwave (!)
around 1992 on WRNO out of New Orleans.

I've also seen them on the decline around Texas. They haven't had
an affiliate in Dallas or Houston for a few years. I believe the
Austin one switched formats sometime last year. The only remnant I
know of is in College Station, where a local AOR/classic rock station
picked them up to relay them on weekend nights (and other various
times, but daytime they have their own DJs/programming). What sucks
is that they succumbed to the alternative bug and play that crap all
the time. Hard rock is barely in their schedule anymore. So I don't
consider it a big loss that they're probably on their way down the
    tubes.

    Ken

P.S. You can see the latest Z-Rock 1000 posted on that College Station
radio station's website. Its callsign is KTSR.. you can probably
do a search and browse your way to it.

    Hi All ....

A few months back, a few of us in the Boston area (only 4) got
together to meet and have lunch a day. It was cool meeting new
jammers and its always good to see old ones, so I was thinking about
extending the invitation a little more. So, if anyone in the Boston
area thinks they might be interested, let me know. We are currently
aiming for Saturday, Jan 25th. I would say since we are calling this
a lunch we are gonna plan for noonish (I should be able to get rid of
my hangover by then). And since there is a good concentration of
people in the Kenmore Square area, we are thinking that would probably
be the best place to have it.

So, if you would like to come, please email me. Any
suggestions about where to eat are welcome. There is a Pizzeria Unos
right in Kenmore Square, so that may be the ideal place, but Newbury
Street is not too far away, so there are definately some choices.

OK, enough from me. Hope to hear from all you locals soon.

    Later!

I guess GW might have done better if they had put "Top 100 Most
*Influential* Guitarists", but the media is noted for using vague tag
lines as a hook to sell you something that you might not otherwise buy.

Yes, GW reached their intended goal. Maybe they ought to reconsider the
    intent.

    ------------------------------

Influenced yes, but in what way? :) ONE musician influenced by John
Petrucci - an accomplished, formally trained musician with a great
respect for the art form - is worth at least four times as much as HALF
of the musicians influenced by the late Mr. Cobain. The actual math
invloved is beyond the scope of this document and is left as an exercise
    for the reader :)

I believe George Carlin said something like "if you think the average
person is stupid, just remember that half the people in the world are
    even more stupid than that"

I agree with Ben. The list has really gone downhill lately. Granted, at
least there haven't been any stupid debates the last couple of weeks
resulting in about 15 new jams a day.

Anyway, I've been on here for about 2 and a half years now (god, I feel
old), and at one time I was one of the most frequent posters, but now I
can't even remember when I last posted. Why? Because the jam sucks now!
I guess part of it is also that there hasn't been much to be excited about
lately for anyone outside of the NYC area, seeing as back when the Jam was
so good, Awake had just come out and the band was touring.

Part of it seems to be the influx of new Internet users the last couple of
years. It seemed like a while ago we had far more musicians on the list,
and far more talk about music instead of just talk about other bands, and
there was far more information I found useful and interesting.

Damn, you all suck. :) Anyway, I may unsubscribe until the end of school
seeing as I just don't have the time to read all this mail. Or at least
until DT releases their new album and there's some more interesting stuff
    to read.

this goes to craig wuthrich and anyone else interested in dt keys music:

i'm back in business. my encore is up and running! which means my kevin
moore-approved transcription of "wait for sleep" is ready to be sent.

craig- i need the address you want it to go to.

anyone else, email me for more info.

for those doubtful of the veridity of the transcription, as i said, kevin
moore himself saw it, and about 30 or so other ytsejammers approved too, when
    they picked it up.

    now for business:

    re: y kant tori read
in case this hasn't been covered, you can get any one of the various bootleg
copies at most import music shops. easy to find. mine also has some live
stuff from her 92 tour, and "song for eric" the tune kevin moore covered.

as for finding an original, good fucking luck. her label only made a few
thousand then, and have long been out of print. there's about 7 or 8 versions
of the album now, and they're all boots. but hey- you get the album, why
    complain?

to ripzero, in search of old prince:
i have a boot from 86 that is pretty interesting. if interested email me

    rick audet:
nice job pulling out the musician's paper article. wow. used to read that
ages ago..funny shit. and i'm sure i'm into petrucci's "detailed strumming".
what the fuck is that supposed to mean? does he look good while strumming.
does he do it like a renaissance artist would, with panache? i'm sure one of
the sicker-minded jammers can answer it (whoever that was with the "bafu on
the rubber doll with the 'to grandma's or bust' sticker or whatver" is a good
    example), though.

    ok. enough shit. peace out.

and this id all attributed to the BIG_WIG record executives who decide whats
hot for the general public, this is the reason why so many people list Kurt
Cocaine as an influence cause at one point that was all you saw or heard on
EMPTYV and the radio, people were never given the chance to hear what other
people were doing with instruments(Other than power chords and things of that
nature) if it was the record companies deciding that people wouldnt be able

    Here we go again!

About Marillion: I have a couple of videos of them in concert from 1983 and
87 and I think both of them are really good. Very Prog though and not heavy
at all. If you're looking for prog music with Metal influences then
Marillion may not be your kind of band. But if you enjoy classic prog along
the lines of Hackett era Genesis then I would recommend them.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    >I thought DT encouraged bootlegs?

Not at all! Mike Portnoy doesn't mind them and if you check Mike Bahr's list
of paid CD's you usually see Mike P with three spots taken. The rest of the
band is not happy with them.

This happens. I bought a used Freddie Mercury CD for $9 and then I see the
same one on the Queen list and it's being sold for $225!!!! I wish I wasn't
such a big Queen fan or I'd sell that bad boy. But I can't bring myself to it.

I have the Bootleg of YKTR and it sounds like a regular disc to me, that's
why I wasn't sure if it was a boot or legit. It also has some bonus trax
    which are:

    1. Ode to The Banana King (part one)
    2. Song For Eric
    3. Happy Phantom (live)
    4. Ring My Bell
    5. The Happy Worker
    6. Workers

Rod Evans was the original singer and YES! Ian IS the singer on DP's latest

and also.. like me.. it was easy to be influenced by cobain..cuz his
music was so simple.. id love for my guitar playing to be influenced by
JP, but since hes such a virtuoso..then id have to practically do some
stuff similar to him... then that way is much harder..while Kurt's stuff
was SO easy than anyone could pick it up in a week..therefore spawning

I personnaly don't know if there are
complete Mike Portnoy drum transcriptions books of an specific album,
and if you find out that such threasures do really exist, please let
me know. What I do know is that Mike recently released his first
instructional video.....WOW, that must be incredible. If the odd times
cause you problems (9/8, or most commonly used by Mike, 11/8), you can
ask for some one to lend you the John Petrucci's Guitar transcriptions
to AWAKE and IAW. These books do exist, and in each phrase of each
song, the time in which it is played by the guys is specified, so you
can just apply them to your drumming. However, there ARE some drum
transcriptions I've seen for MP grooves "available": the only problem
is that they just show you the basic battern of the song, but maybe
you'll find it useful. The first one I know appears in an article of
Modern Drummer Magazine, on the December 93 issue, on page 48,
article named: Mike Portnoy, off the record, IAW. Here you'll find the
basic rythm patterns for PMU, TTT, Surrounded, and UAGMoon. The second
one I know appears on the Sabian 1995 Newsbeat Catalog, on page 20,
where Mike's personal transcription to the 6:00 basic splash groove
