Lower-voiced singers who are relatively good exist. Check out
Testament. I think, though, that the human voice enjoys higher voiced,
men at least, more. More tennors who sing opera are famous and more
tennors who sing broadway are recognized. I don't think James Hettfield
has a high voice, though and he is the shit.
As for the response to my saying that talent will be popular again,
Mr. Cashman, I believe you are listening to music and talking to your
friends, if I can be so bold as to refer to us as such, as we post. Maybe
you don't listen to it with that sole purpose in mind, but isn't it neat
to share ideas and theories about music? I think deep down you think so,
or you wouldn't have subscribed in the first place. Gentle rebuke, not
    flaming. Be well.

You know, I think some people on this list are forgetting what record
companies are for: Making money for the owners/shareholders/whatever. The
easiest way for a company to make money in the US today is to produce more
of the same, because the general US public WANT more of the same. The same
thing is true in the book publishing industry - the books that make the
most dependable money are the ones that are written by established authors
doing the same thing they've always done. People who's style changes
completely with everything they do don't always make money. Therefore, a
big record company is going to prefer the dependable guy who don't
innovate, or do anything that different from all the other bands that his
    label owns.

Now I'm not saying this is good or anything, but it's the way a free market
economy works - the producers produce more of what they KNOW they can sell,
taking as few chances as are needed to keep going forward.

    Just a reality check...

To those who know who I am, I'm back. This might be too late, but I'd like to comment on a few recent threads. One of the best female bands is called Phantom Blue. (I don't think they've been mentioned yet.) They are from Los Angeles and have about three albums (although only one is on a major label). They are an ass-kicking heavy rock band. Their music is fairly complicated, though it isn't prog. Their most heavily-circulated album, 1993's _Built to Perform, was produced by Max Norman (Megadeth, Ozzy Osbourne, etc.). About the "nineties" line in "Learning to Live:" that is one of the only problems I have with that song. The rest of the whole damn album is timeless, but when they throw an awkward line in like that, they unnecessarily date it. Finally, are there any Queensryche fan club members on here that have that live video that came out? I've been looking for information on it. Thank you and good night.

I've been feeling rather talkative lately...

I recently picked up a bass and even though it's already a done deal, I'd like to know what people think of the Ibanez EX series basses. I picked it up used for $199. It's got pearl right angle triangle inlays, a rosewood fretboard, one p-style and one j-style pickup, and the standard 3 knobs. Any opinions on the line or ideas which particular models this is? I can't find any info on the EX line anywhere.

For those of you into Tiles, the Detroit prog band, the new CD, Fence the Clear, will be out in March or April. Apparently it has been ready for awhile, but got tied up in failed negotiations with Magna Carta(!). They will be playing some Detroit shows to test out the new material under the fake name of Camel Toe in late Feb. or early March, so keep an eye out for them. For those who don't know the band, if you're a fan of Enchant and Rush style prog rock, you will definitely dig these guys. Email me and I'll let you know more. BTW, for anyone who gets their newsletter, yes, that was my review that was posted to the 'Jam reprinted! Cool, huh? :)

If I did, I'd be saving for an IBNS JP100 and a more decent amp. Please! Please! Please! Respond. Be well. Matt B

    Hi everyone,

Just to let some people that might have been looking for me know that I have finally moved to Germany. I had some trouble with my e-mail box filling up but I just wanted to tell people that I haven't written to in a while that I will get back to you very very soon (I hope *grin*).

So take care everyone and I will be in touch from here in Germany. The land of metal. Feb. and March look like great months for shows with most weeks having more than one show per week. Oh how I love Hamburg!

Anyway I am out of here, Tschuess.

Hey, jammers, it's been a while.

My school percussion ensemble received music for Metropolis today. All I can say is that we really have our work cut out for us. There are parts that I can't play on guitar that I have to play on marimba. I also get the bass solo. This is going to be one hell of a semester, and I am soooooooooo pumped up for it!!

Again, if you want to recieve a tape of the performance in the event that we get a good recording, just drop me a line. Due to time limits we had to cut the song down to seven minutes. I hope no one is too dissapointed.

Somebody said that they saw a couple copies of YKTR new? For $25? If so you are the luckiest person in the world as MANY Toriphiles, such as myself, would be willing to do almost anything for this cd new. However, i am willing to wager almost anything that these are boots for 3 main reasons:

    1) This CD was originally released in a cardboard longbox (remember these??)

    2) There are about 4 boots of this cd out there and 2 are exact detail for detail copies with the only discerning markings being the jewel case inserts. These inserts are slightly, and i mean SLIGHTLY, different from the original because the paper is not the same grade and the printing is a bit off center.

    3) And last but not least, this cd gets between $100-$250 USED! Yes it has been seen by a member of a tori mailing list last weekend at a record show for $250 used! I also read that a sealed longbox version sold about a year and a half ago for $500 at some rock memorabilia auction!

Trust me when i say that these are boots as i am 99.99% sure they are. i almost bought one of the exact copies but it was going for $30.00. There are very few record stores that dont know of the value of this album. Even though its a boot, its a great CD!

    cheers-

Yeah, yeah, Chuck Billy rocks. I think his best work was on The Ritual, where he did some nifty harmonizing and wasn't so growly. The whole CD rokz. That's about the only one I REALLY like, but the rest of them are pretty good, more speed-metalish than what I like to listen to.. The acoustic tracks on Live at the Fillmore rule. i hear that braindance has a new cd out, yet i'm unable to find it. i tried the laser's edge, which is where i bought "fear itself", but they're not aware of it. if anyone of you kind folks would happen to know where this disc may be found, i'd greatly appreciate some help, as these guys are amoung my favorite bands. btw, the new cd is titled 'can of worms'.

and for those who don't know, braindance is, well, by their own definition 'progressive new age gothic metal fusion'. i call them amazing. their singer has one of the most incredible voices.. very dark and disturbing, yet he sings, doesn't growl or scream. has an amazing range as well. mix very tight drums and bass with incredible guitar work and atmospheric keys and alot of samples, along with alot of acoustic textures and gothic sound... i guess i should also mention, not that it makes a difference to me but to some it may, that the guitarist is a woman. and imo, she blows away most of the guitarists i've heard. very original style and approach. well, to my ear anyway. they're very progressive, and to my knowledge, unsigned, making the already great production to the album that much more impressive. they're definitely worth checking out. as i said above, the last i knew you could get "fear itself", which is the disc i have, from the laser's edge. email: lasercd@aol.com

well, that's it. again, i'd appreciate any help on locating their new one.

oh, and my addition to the "sucks" debate... the above post is an example of a way to convince someone that a band you like is worth checking out. saying "they kick ass" or "they rule" isn't exactly descriptive... same goes for criticism. think about that before you post. thanks. :)

Actually, Mike's thing is collecting boots of their performances (I think he asked me once what boots I had of them). Hell, he records/tapes a lot of their shows. James used to hate them, but I think he tolerates them now. As far as I know, JP still hates them.

Nope, you won't regret. This is a Swedish techno/country band, and horrible! The only good part with them is that when they were having a gig here in Finland, my friends who had a band called Chainflesh at time (excellent proggy trash like Tourniquet but with the most incredible shouter ever, Anselmo, Cavalera or anyone sounds like a wimpy choirboy compared to him) Anyhow guys just went in and told to bouncer that they were playing there tonight and got in for free...

Now on to something different... I have a tape of a radioshow where DT plays Iron Maiden's Trooper a little bit, and Kevin Moore sings on it. This made me a huge impact, even though I am not a Maiden fan but have they played it elsewhere? Even though I love JLB, I have never heard him sing like KM, and if he sings more on the whole version - if there is one - I want it!!! BTW- Dan if you don't have this you want it, 'cuz they are playing Space in your face by GC...

Wow!!! I can't believe someone brought up the subject of Warrant on the jam and it wasn't me!!! I bought "Belly To Belly" the day it came out and I was not disappointed. Sure, it sounds different. When speaking of selling out, take into consideration the fact that at the time of its release, Warrant has been together for ten years and boasts a new line-up (Bobby Borg on drums and Rick Steir on lead guitar, who also played on "Ultraphobic"). Jani Lane himself has been quoted as saying that it is a difficult line to toe between being a hard rock band from the 80s and being credible in the 90s. I think that if any album sounds too forced it is "Ultraphobic," and I'm not only talking about it's poor production qualities. There were some amazing songs on that album: "Sum Of One," "Crawlspace (one of my fav. Warrant songs), " High" the title-track, and "Stronger Now." The rest seemed to be way too grungy. "Belly To Belly" has less of grunge feel to it and more of a brit-pop feel (ie. Oasis and some Bowie). In all honesty, speaking as a diehard Warrant fan, "Belly 2 Belly" took a little while to grow on me. I liked some of the songs immediatley like "Letter To A Friend," "A.Y.M.," "Vertigo," "All 4 U." But now, I LOVE that album. Even "Feels Good," which I couldn't stand at first, is an album highlight for me. The only song I absolutely can't stand on it is "Coffee House." They should have dropped it, as well as that reggae thing "Nobody Else." Oh, BTW, I caught the new lineup this new year's eve at the Troubador in LA. What an amazing show!! Bobby Borg is an animal. He went to Berklee and it shows (I know, I know...Berklee is no fucking guarantee). And surprisingly , Rick Steir fit in like a glove.
